away the progress we have made. >> next primary vote is in wisconsin on april 5th where republican voters may have problems with what trump said about abortion. that primary is april 19th. as you know, hillary clinton is not the only presidential candidate visiting new york today. ohio's republican governor john kasich headed to geno's pizza in howard beach. during his late lunch kasich addressed the issue of profiling muslims, saying he agrees with nypd commissioner bill bratton. >> targeting neighborhoods based on some sort of a religious labeling is only going to inhibit our ability to have cooperation between those who represent the civilized world battling against those group of murderers that i think are limited in number. >> in case you're wondering how did he eat his pizza?

used his hands for the remaining two slices. in brooklyn nearly 100 people left homeless after a ferocious fire swept through several buildings in bushwick. the apartments were rent regulated and tonight the people who lived there are worried about finding a new place live. eyewitness news reporter tim fleischer tweeted video of the damage today. he's in bushwick tonight. >> the devastation of this fire, let me show you, is more than just the burned out shell of these five buildings. the people who lived here lost everything. >> reporter: if the apartments in these buildings weren't destroyed by fire, they were heavily damaged, leaving fernando roldan with little to salvage. >> they had to break down the roof among the second floor so i had a lot of water on my property. >> reporter: in these buildings, city officials say 40 rent regulated apartments were homes. >> we lost everything and we're going to a shelter or a hotel for now.

between 5 three-story buildings, this raging inferno went from three alarms. from this video shot from a drone overhead, you can see the damage. the fire spread quickly not because of the wind, but because of the way the buildings were built. >> i think more what's caused the fire spread tonight is the construction of these buildings. they're attached for eight buildings and that's what happens. >> reporter: as arson and explosion detectives begin their task of finding the cause, city buildings inspectors try to determine which buildings should be torn down and which could be saved. for the families, they've lost >> baby food. they need clothes. they need resources. and working with a number of organizations, we're going to try to establish a charity for them. >> reporter: the red cross is meeting with displaced residents, getting them immediate shelter, food, and clothing, and helping them with longer term needs.

home he can afford. >> if it's not affordable, we end up in the streets again. we definitely do need affordable housing. >> the fdny is also receiving reports that on the roof of one of the buildings, there were two very large coops with several hundred pigeons. their fate is unknown. tim fleischer, channel 7 eyewitness news. there's now a federal monitor who will oversee the reform of the newark police department. the appointment of a monitor follows a 2014 report by the doj that found rampant problems within the police department, including unconstitutional searches, use of force, and theft by officers. officers will now undergo new training. and the city will issue dashboard cameras for patrol cars. officers will also soon wear body cameras and a citizens review board will investigate complaints filed against the department. >> this was something over our head and we didn't look at it as an albatross, as a problem. we looked at it as an

begin to make our police department better, more efficient, stronger, more trusting. and more effective. >> former state attorney general peter harvey is the federal monitor who will oversee the reforms but they won't begin until a federal judge approves them. a blast in bayonne today that rocked the industrial part of the city. the sudden explosion injured utility company workers and police officers. eyewitness news reporter toni yates has details on those hurt and what caused the blast. she's in bayonne tonight. >> this intersection where the blast occurred is still closed off to traffic. you can see down the street, it's not a road that gets a lot of traffic up and down it anyway. you do see the fire house there. traffic in this area has not been disrupted. they're still working to repair the damage while the five people who were onsite, who were injured, will all be okay. >> reporter: newscopter7 capturing images of the hole

a blast that blew out around a new pse&g gas line. they were testing air pressure, something routinely done. >> it was pressurized air in the line at the time, and the pressurized air, once it was released, it expelled all the dirt from the construction hole. >> reporter: nevins says the blast was a temporary cap that blew off under too much air pressure. he says those types of caps are replaced with permanent ones that are welded on to the line before the gas is pumped in. the blast injured three workers of hackensack. two bayonne police officers were directing traffic when the cap blew. check out their car being towed away. it's covered in dirt. >> construction workers that were injured, one is in serious but stable condition. the other is in stable both officers at the scene at the time of the explosion were

>> and at the end of the day that's very good news about those three workers and those two police officers. osha is investigating this accident. live in bayonne, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. friends and family remembered the life of former new york city fire commissioner nicholas capeta today. a private memorial service was named at a children's center named after him. he is credited with helping rebuild the department after the 9/11 attacks. >> after hurricane katrina, nick sent a group of firefighters to new orleans to help the city in its recovery efforts. he remembered the outpouring of support that new york city had received after 9/11. >> he died last thursday at the age of 83 after a battle with cancer. the indian point nuclear power plant will remain shut down while faulty bolts are replaced. an inspection of one reactor found about 220 stainless steel

degraded they needed to be replaced. the company running it said it poses no issue to safety. cuomo has been asking the federal government to reject an extension of indian point's operating license. egypt has formally asked cypress to execute the man who faces preliminary charges including hijacking, illegal possession of explosives, kidnapping. a judge ordered mustaffa to remain in custody for eight days. a belgian official says a laptop found near the hideout of the brussels suspects contained images of the prime minister's home and office. the official added there's absolutely no indication that prime minister charles michele was in any danger.

for at least one suspect in the attacks. we're learning more tonight about a new york man injured in the airport attack in brussels. jalo lives in harlem. he was leaving the belgian capital visiting his girlfriend. he was leaving when the bomb went off. he has serious burns. two delta workers helped him celebrate his 48th birthday. they got him a cake with an american flag on it. republicans on capitol hill may be refusing to meet with mayor garland, but democrats are lining up to meet the supreme court nominee including kirsten gillibrand. gillibrand sat down with him today. democrats are using every opportunity to make a case for a hearing to be held for garland. republicans are refusing to act on his nomination. >> i think he's someone who is

he used his remarks to urge people not to give in to the temptation to strike out against those who don't look or pray like they do. a massive sinkhole causes evacuations and problems with utilities. authorities of six homes in a nearby trailer park near tampa are evacuated as a precaution. the hole, 60 feet wide. believed to be around 35 deep, full of muddy water. it's cutting off a road, it's affected the sewer, the water, power lines. fortunately no one was hurt. >> that's a big hole. >> that's no pothole on the west side. >> part of soil susceptible to that. >> you know why i've told you this before, if you cut florida in half, it looks like swiss cheese. i learned that once. >> you haven't forgotten it, have you? well. sun and high clouds through the evening. temperatures just stabilize with a milder southerly breeze that starts to come in. tomorrow is more of a filtered sun and the wind starts to get gusty again. this time it's a warmer breeze. we're in the mid and upper 60s during the afternoon hours. there's our high offshore. it's skipped a little farther to the south and east. here are the south winds coming in. also complimenting that are the winds out ahead of the next front moving in. it's not all that organized. the first showers we see are really tomorrow evening. the daylight hours are fine. this front does have a gulf connection here and there are a couple downpours that may sneak in to the area friday morning. we're not talking about washout time periods. a couple of rounds of showers, maybe even a rumble of thunder. i'll get you that timing in just a moment. as we go through this evening, clear to partly cloudy skies. tomorrow, patchy clouds early. see how you go from at times mostly cloudy to at times partly cloudy but overall a dry day. mild breeze. temperatures feel great in the afternoon hours.

no charges will be filed against two minneapolis police officers in the deadly shooting of a black man. prosecutors say 24-year-old jamar clark was shot last november while attempting to gain control of one of the officers' guns. the officers they say were in danger of being shot themselves. investigators say the decision not to press charges was also based on witness accounts. clark also kept putting his hands in his pockets and refused police orders to show his hands. canada's largest city is mourning its infamous former mayor. funeral services were held in toronto for rob ford who died last week at the age of 46 after battling an aggressive form of cancer. his 10-year-old daughter spoke to mourners saying her dad is the mayor of heaven now. his term was marred by revelations of drinking problems and smoking crack.

h a warning tonight for parents about a possible predator who's tried to lure two young girls. the 10-year-old girls on long island say a stranger tried to convince them to get in to his car. >> the girls managed to escape. this happened late monday afternoon in wantagh. >> n.j. burkett is in mineola with the story. >> county police headquarters as you know here in mineola where detectives are using the word troubling to describe this case, and not just because the driver drove up alongside the girls, but because at one point he got out of the car. the girls took off and they're fine, but patrols in the neighborhood are being stepped up.

the idea that there's so many people out there. >> reporter: wantagh residents are watching their kids a little closer tonight after two girls were walking together, a short distance from their school late monday afternoon when they say a young man in a black car with dark windows pulled up alongside them. the girls told detectives the man called out to them, come on, girls, follow me. then drove up toward the next intersection, did a u-turn, and doubled back. the girls say that's when the man got out of his car and started shouting why are you running away from me? come with me. the girls did the right thing. they kept on running. >> they went right home. they reported to their parents. and the parents called the police. >> reporter: the girls were not physically hurt and detectives say there's no reason to doubt their story. >> it's troubling. we know that. and that's why we are on high alert right now. we're really making it one of our top priorities today and

>> reporter: neighbors who have noticed the increased patrol say it's reassuring but the incident is unnerving. >> constantly people jogging, walking, running around here. so the fact that something like that goes on around here is a little scary. >> the man was driving a black four-door car with dark rims and dark windows. the suspect described as caucasian, roughly 5'8", late 20s, wearing a black t-shirt and jeans. police tell me this does not appear to fit any particular kind of pattern. as we've been saying, anyone with information that could help them solve this case is urged to call the nassau county police. n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. new at 5:00, police make an arrest in the stabbing and robbery of a livery cab driver in yonkers. 62-year-old pedro estrada is charged with robbery and assault. police say he was riding in a cab when he attacked the driver, severing an artery. when he ran to the hospital for

stole the cab. he was hospitalized in critical condition but is expected to recover. police in new jersey are searching for two suspects tonight in a terrifying home invasion that targeted an elderly woman. police say the two men broke in to a home in ewing township overnight. the 92-year-old homeowner was startled awake as the suspects ordered her to hand over her money. the man beat the woman, tied her up with appliance cords and dragged her to the basement. a neighbor discovered the victim badly beaten. >> bleeding on the brain, numerous fractures and possibly a broken rib. >> i couldn't believe it. nothing like this ever happened before in a neighborhood. >> police call this case their top priority. the woman is recovering in the hospital tonight. another violent crime, this one in manhattan. police are searching for a man and woman wanted for a home invasion in east harlem. we have a look at the suspects. the pair knocked on a man's door and claimed to be conducting a survey.

beat the man unconscious, took jewelry, cash, and electronics from the apartment. that man is expected to be okay. in connecticut a car crashed in to the front of a ups store. little rock police posted this photo on instagram. you can see the store on main avenue badly damaged. the good news is nobody was hurt. police are investigating what led up to the crash. shocking video of young children terrorizing subway passengers in philadelphia. this video went viral. kids as young as 7 years old seen hitting and spitting on stunned riders. now we hear from the parents of the children. they talked with our sister station wpvi. >> ashamed because i would never thought they would do something like that. >> reporter: the parents of the children involved in this shocking video posted on social media by a rider are shocked and

>> it gets me angry, you know, and i was angry at my kids. i'm still angry at my kids for acting like that. >> reporter: except the police say a woman with four boys and a girl hopped on the septa train on march 24th and got off. police released the video unblurred hoping someone would recognize them to get the kids professional help. >> we want to get them help. this is not a case where at 6 a.m. some day we're going to be busting down a door and dragging them out in little handcuffs. it's just not going to happen. we want to get help for them. >> reporter: police did visit the two families involved in the videos. both say some of the kids are being treated for attention deficit disorder. the father of the 11 and 7-year-old boys and an 8-year-old girl blames the person videotaping them for egging them on. >> they don't put that on the news when he's calling the kids monkey. that's racist. >> reporter: he says he's not surprised with some of the foul language the kids were using. >> they're not kids with silver spoons. all they hear is curse words

new at 5:00, the nypd released surveillance images tonight for a pair of serial burglars. the two have pulled off 19 burglars in brooklyn all since february. police say the suspects break in to homes during overnight hours. they've stolen everything from credit cards to a lexus. more states and cities like new york are banning non-essential travel to north carolina because of the new law banning anti-discrimination measures. they say the law allows discrimination against transgender people and other groups. yesterday the state's attorney general said he won't defend the law and now the governor who

warm in to the upper 60s if not 70. the next several hours generally in the upper 40s and holding steady. there will be clouds that work in tonight. it's a little breezy early on. the wind is picking up at sunrise. wind gusts could be over 35, 40 miles per hour tomorrow. this time it's a warmer wind. i don't think we're talking damaging winds although i wouldn't be shocked to see a wind advisory across the area. sun will mix with clouds, filtered sky. more clouds later in the day. high should be in the upper 60s, obviously cooler along south facing shores. watch this futurecast and we'll take you right in to the rain on friday. as we go through tomorrow morning, upper 40s, low 50s as the launching pad. not bad for the final day of march. clouds in and out. at times it could look overcast. with the warm breezes i think 70 should be a lock away from the coast. near 70 in the city. closer to upper 50s and lower 60s on south facing shores. you'll need the umbrella after 8:00 or 9:00 tomorrow night. you won't during the daylight hours. they're widely scattered

probably a little more widespread after midnight. in to your morning commute there could be a downpour off to the north and west and later in the commute, maybe even some more widespread downpours or a rumble of thunder. an early departure on friday. you're better off to beat some of the heavier showers. they'll leave the scene by late morning, allowing clouds to thin, and lower if not middle 70s in reach if we can get some brightening. that can spark a late day shower or thunderstorm on friday. book end showers on friday. air quality is good tomorrow. uv index at a 5. pollen count moderate to high. looking at the 7-day, very mild temperatures the next couple days. friday is a little bumpy but the middle of the day could actually have a little sun. saturday is about 60. this front may stall offshore leaving us with at least extra cloud cover but you might need the umbrella at times saturday as well. sunday it's all about a big drop in temperature. 45 feels like 30s. gusty winds. and in the morning, there might be a rain or snow shower. here's the deal with monday. and opening day, yankee stadium. i've tweaked this forecast a little bit.
