7:00 am
15 degrees warmer than normal. shower and thunderstorm tomorrow. going to get cold by sunday. >> okay. see you then. i'm ken rosato. >> thank you for starting your mowi good morning, america. a massive storm hits the heart heartland. six tornadoes destroying homes downing power lines and in on a major airport as passengers face violent turbulence. >> we had some severe turbulence. an aircraft had to divert due to injuries of some personnel on board. >> flash floods and rescues in arkansas and more storms on the way. also this morning a political firestorm erupting overnight over donald trump's
7:01 am
says should happen to women if it were illegal. >> the answer is that there has to be some form of punishment. >> for the woman? >> yeah. >> candidates on both sides of the aisle now attacking. trump backing down and john kasich right here in the studio live. first grader poison plot. three young girls accused of trying to target their classmate. what they tried to put in a student's lunch and how officials stopped it just in time. the picture causing outrage around the world. a man posing with a hijacker midflight who claimed he had explosives. new video of the moment they took the photo and what the flight crew did when all this was happening. and we do say good morning, america. we have that new video from inside that hijacked plane. picture everyone is showing around the world as well getting a lot of reaction right now. what the man at the center of it
7:02 am
>> remember the flight crew getting a picture with the suspect there. also the political firestorm erupting over donald trump's comments about abortion and what he said should happen to women if it's illegal. governor john kasich standing by live. he'll take robin's questions in just a moment but first we want to get to that massive storm sweeping across the country, the heartland hit with reported tornadoes, hail and flash flooding in the south. ginger is standing by but abc's phillip mena is in tulsa, oklahoma, to lead us off. hey, phillip. >> reporter: good morning, david. church members tell local media they were inside praying when the storm hit as bricks were flying off the building and they were huddled together praying as the roof above them was ripped clean off. overnight, tornado sirens blasting an eerie warning in oklahoma. where tornadoes were captured on camera touching down in the tulsa area. >> this is crazy. tulsa is getting hit. >> reporter: this twister coming
7:03 am
international airport. >> oh, my gosh. look. you're right. >> that's it right there. >> oh, my stars. >> yeah, she's on the ground. >> she's forming. >> reporter: watch as this looming dark cloud spirals into a funnel shape over a tulsa neighborhood in this time lapse video. >> we got a tornado on the ground. there's going to be damage. we're watching the debris fly up into the cloud. >> reporter: 5,000 went without power after electrical lines were destroyed. these housing developments completely blown over. this church wrecked in the twister's wake. and in arkansas, more severe weather wreaking havoc where heavy rains gave way to flash flooding on the ground forcing rescue crews to save three commuters from rushing waters and turbulence in the skies. >> we had some severe turbulence. an aircraft had to divert due to injuries of some personnel on board. >> reporter: american eagle pilots making an emergency
7:04 am
became two bumpy injuring two workers. >> i look over and the drink cart goes up in midair and drops on top of the male flight attendant. attendants were taken to the hospital but they are doing okay this morning. and here in tulsa, seven people were hospitalized but thankfully no one was killed. david. >> all right, phillip mena, thanks so much. right over to ginger at the wall. we have severe weather right now. >> at this hour tornado watch in parts of mississippi and louisiana, these storms will move through and the cold front is slow moving so it's going to have plenty of time to destabilize the atmosphere again this afternoon and evening, almost in the same exact area looking for anywhere from western kentucky down through western tennessee, memphis included. birmingham to jackson, mississippi and the elevated risk area. not only will you have the severe weather potential with tornadoes and hail but remember the flash flooding that happened in little rock you're just seeing, that is still in place. flood watches from georgia back to parts of texas.
7:05 am
rain that comes very quickly in the next 24 hour, something to look for and i'll have a whole lot more coming up. david and robin. >> we are sure you will. thank you. the race for the white house, john kasich is standing by to talk to us live here in the studio. all eyes, of course, on wisconsin, the next state to vote and what could be a critical turning point. donald trump trailing ted cruz in a new poll there and bernie sanders and hillary clinton in a very tight race, as well. abc's cecilia vega is here with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. wisconsin is the state to win right now. but the trouble for donald trump extends far beyond that new poll. this morning his comments on abortion have him caught in the crosshairs of a major firestorm and even the biggest anti-abortion groups say he is wrong. they are the comments sparking backlash from inside his own party and beyond. >> i am against -- i am pro-life, yes. >> reporter: donald trump in an msnbc forum asked if abortion becomes illegal, should women who have the procedure be punished?
7:06 am
>> the answer is that there has to be some form of punishment did for the woman? >> yeah, there has to be some form. >> ten years -- >> that, i don't know. >> why not? you have positions on everything else. >> it's a complicated position. >> reporter: is the man who gets her pregnant responsible? >> i would say no. >> reporter: the outcry instant from anti-abortion groups to his republican rivals who oppose abortion rights. >> it's difficult enough situation and to try to punish somebody. >> being pro-life is not only about defending the unborn children it's also about defending the mothers, defending the women who have the incredible gift of bringing life into the world. >> reporter: to his rivals across the aisle. >> what he said today is just among the most outrageous and dangerous statements that i've heard anybody running for president say in a really long time. >> to punish a woman for having an abortion is beyond comprehension. >> reporter: but then a
7:07 am
after those controversial remarks. the republican front-runner reversing himself saying in a statement -- "the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman." the woman is a victim in this case. challenger ted cruz firing off overnight on "jimmy kimmel." >> if i were in my car and getting ready to reverse and saw donald in the backup camera, i'm not confident which pedal i'd push. [ applause ] >> reporter: well, it didn't take long. hillary clinton is already turning these comments into a fund-raising tactic sending an e-mail to supporters saying, quote, donald trump wants to punish women for making our own health care decisions, even though he reversed his position, his opponents are not backing away from this one, robin. the big question is will this hurt him? he is already seeing his popularity with women slip. >> all right, cecilia, well, republican presidential candidate john kasich is joining us now live here in the studio.
7:08 am
when you're running for president. thank you very much for taking the time to be here. >> pie pleasure. >> you just recently released a statement this morning and in part you said the past 24 hours revealed in the clearest way yet that donald trump is not prepared to be president. why? >> i mean, first of all, his comments on abortion. i knew he'd reverse them right after he said them when he left the studio. secondly, i mean he talked about using nuclear weapons in europe. he talked about abolishing nato. he said his supreme court justice would investigate hillary's e-mails, that would be one of the reasons why they would be picked. he even said that we should get rid of the geneva convention so that, you know, the geneva convention guides the way we treat people on the battlefield. it's like a panoply of mistakes and outrageous statements. with donald it's a stream of consciousness but, robin, we're dealing in such a serious time with the problem of global
7:09 am
home very poor economic growth, meme feeling as though they've got no future. you can't operate like this. you are going to be president of the united states. people around the world must be having a field day and you know what donald ought to be happy about, jon stewart isn't running "the daily show"? people have often talked about that. in the past you've been asked is he fit to be commander in keefe and hesitated to respond but because of all that was said yesterday -- >> i've inform said fit. i will use the word unfit when there's no coming back. i don't believe donald trump is going to be the nominee and this underscores his problem. this is why i stay in the race. look, people say why does he stay in the race? what am i supposed to get out and leave it to these guys? you know, cruz is out there saying we ought to start patrolling muslim neighborhoods. i mean, do you think we're going to get intelligence information from the must limg community when we are targeting them and isolating them?
7:10 am
record or things that are coming out of donald's mouth that are just basically irresponsible. he mentioned riots at the convention, so, look, i have two 16-year-old daughters and at the end of the day i will have to explain to them if i'm not the nominee who i'm supporting and why. >> and you in getting that nomination nomination, a contested convention which is why donald trump said there would be riots, if there was a contested convention. what is your path? how can you become the gop nominee. >> ted cruz i have to get about 90% of the delegates going forward which he's not going to get. trump would have to have nearly 60% which he's never coming close to. now in new york and pennsylvania, once we get beyond wisconsin i'll get -- pick some delegates up there and i will begin to roll up delegates. i will have momentum going into the convention and, robin, the reason is i have a record of economic growth, national security experience and results. and at some point they'll think
7:11 am
would be a good president and let me tell you one other thing, i'd beat hillary clinton in every national poll in the country. even here in new york, donald trump trails her by 20 points. i trail her by 5 in new york. i mean that's unbelievable. so i'm going to be able to compete all across the political map and i just going to get to the convention. >> i know you want to talk about what your world view is. you stated what donald trump had said and included nato is, quote, obsolete. what is your world view to keep america safe. >> we're going to destroy isis along with our friends in europe and with us being the leader but then beyond that, nato needs to be transformed into an organization that does intelligence gathering and policing. it appears over in europe as though they're just dysfunctional, bureaucracy, political correctness, it's not working. the president of the united states needs to take lemons and turn it into lemonade by leading and getting these countries to realize that civilization is at stake.
7:12 am
robin. you know the way these islamists would feel about you as a woman being on television, this would be the most outrageous thing that they could see, so it is civilization versus a group of people who are intent on destroying us and what we represent. so we're going to have to move expeditiously, good intelligence, human intelligence and here at home joint terrorism task forces with fbi homeland security, state and local law enforcement who have the tools and resources to protect us. that is what we need to be doing. >> you have been very clear from the get-go what your plan is for that and other issues. again, thank you for being here in new york and i can't let you go. you're eating pizza with a fork? >> look, robin, look, look, the pizza came scald be hot, okay. and so i use a little fork. you know what my wife who is on spring break with my daughters said, i'm proud of you. you finally learned how to use a utensil properly but i mean --
7:13 am
had the hot sausage. it was fantastic. but here's what i've learned. i came to new york. there were like 100 press people there. get ready, john, because i'll be spending a lot of time in new york. >> new yorkers eat their pizza a certain way, just saying, not just new yorkers but around the world. >> listen, i was eating pizza before that reporter was even born so -- >> i'll let you get that line back. >> one last thing, i want to say something about the people at abc. robin, for six months they gave you a chance to get your health back. >> yes. >> for six months they never replaced your seat. i don't think -- if it would have taken a year they would have kept it open. a lot of organizations would run over people who got sick. you know what, a salute to abc, the management for saying that robin roberts and her ability to recover and get on her feet is critical. that's an example to the rest of the country about how we treat people. we have to treat them like they're in our own family. >> that's very kind of you to say.
7:14 am
>> thank you for coming here. >> you're welcome. thank you. >> i appreciate that. david. >> all right, robin. thanks very much. more on the race for the white house this morning. abc's matthew dowd has been listening in on the conversation with governor kasich. as you know, donald trump has said a lot of things in the campaign along the way. critics pouncing every single time saying this will be the thing that hurts donald trump but was this different? >> well, when you run a seat of the pants campaign sometimes the pants wear thin and you get exposed and in the course of this, i think donald trump -- it's a cumulative effect, david and this is another thing, a big thick i think, a big problematic thing in the course of what happened yesterday that it's a cumulative effect that weighs him down. the other part, we are in a moment now where we are approaching april. we're getting close to the vepg and people are getting really serious about who they want to see as president. so as you make mistakes later in a campaign, it has a much more profound effect. >> in the middle of a primary and heard governor kasich with robin. you have a lot of people
7:15 am
against hillary clinton. you heard her there. in cecilia's piece, the immediate tweet after donald trump just when you thought it couldn't get worse, horrific and telling, hillary clinton tweeted. was this a gift for the clinton camp? >> oh, it was a gift wrapped with a bow and everything sparkles all over it. it was perfect for them. i mean, donald trump already has a problem for the general election. if you look at the voters who haven't participated in primaries he is viewed very unfavorably especially by women. so for hillary clinton if she's the democratic nominee, obviously she's still got a race with bernie sanders in the course of this. if she is this is one more example where all she has to use is donald trump's own words in a commercial that will really harm him. >> all right, matt dowd with us, we appreciate your insight. over to you, robin. now to a terror plot stopped just in time. authorities saying they stopped a, quote, imminent attack in france. arresting a suspect with an arsenal of explosives and guns. abc's alex marquardt is in paris
7:16 am
good morning, alex. >> reporter: good morning, robin. that's right. had all the makings of another paris-style attack. the authorities saying they stopped the plot in its final stages and reports from brussels there are raids ongoing connected to the man at the center of it all. it was here that reda kriket, a 34-year-old frenchman was planning what authorities now say was an imminent attack on french soil. when the police raided the apartment which kriket rented under a fake name and fade for in cash they found an arsenal that the paris prosecutor found unprecedented. five ak-47 rifles, 7 handguns, tatp, the explosive used in both the paris and brussels isis attacks. detonators, acid and thousands of ball bearings. now kriket has been charged with preparing an attack and participating in a terror group. he's not believed to have been
7:17 am
at least four others linked to kriket have been detained in holland and belgium in the past few days. kriket's ties to terror were well known. he was sentenced in absentia last year for being part of a network recruiting jihadists to fight in syria, which he did himself. sentenced with him the paris attacks' ringleader, abdelhamid abaaoud. and we've just learned minutes ago that there is a second suspect at large connected to the brussels attacks. there was the man in the hat at the airport and now a second man seen on surveillance camera at the metro station that was attacked. those two, the most wanted men in europe. back to you. >> all right, alex, thanks so much. back to ginger now. the wind here in the northeast again today? >> yeah, really windy. the gusts up to 60 miles per hour. that's why we have boston in a wind advisory back to buffalo,

i figured if his bomb was real i'd have nothing to lose anyway so i took a chance to get a closer look at it. i reckoned it was more likely to be fake. i thought, if he blows us all up, it won't matter anyway. online there's a heated debate, some calling it the best photo ever taken but others condemn innes saying he risked lives so he could boast to pals. >> he should not be celebrated for capturing a great photo. he should be condemned for interfering with a hostage situation. >> reporter: ben's mom pauline who met him at the airport summed it up succinctly saying it was stupid. moms know best. while seriously there are real questions being raised right now about the conduct of those crew members on that egyptair flight, but in the end the good news, of course, everyone was safe. >> that is good news. robin and david. >> mom did not look happy. >> no, she did not. we turn to elementary school students who officials say were
7:34 am
of their own classmates and they are in the first grade. abc's gio benitez is here with the details and what the superintendent is now saying. >> good morning. we're talking about 7 and 7-year-old kids allegedly planning a murder. a plot to kill a student just as young. now, watch closely because this may just spark a conversation within your own home. this morning, three little kids allegedly involved in one big plot. first grade students at this anchorage charter school suspended after allegedly plotting to poison and kill a fellow student. school officials say they found out about the morbid alleged plan only after another classmate overheard the students talking about it. >> we're grateful that we had students come forward and share their concern. >> reporter: according to police, the young girls planned to put silica gel preservation packets from their lunchtime food bags into another student's lunch. the students believing the packets were poisonous. they are marked with do not consume warnings.
7:35 am

7:36 am
don't want to tattletale, this time it worked. >> save lives. >> see something, speak up. >> gio, thank you. the latest twist in that alabama governor scandal. a top aide resigning following allegations of an affair. the governor denying it. as calls for him to leave office continue to grow. abc's steve osunsami has the latest. >> reporter: this morning the alleged girlfriend of the once very married alabama governor is making it even harder for his critics to believe him when he keeps saying this. >> i want everyone to know, though, that i have never had a physical affair with mrs. mason. >> reporter: his top political adviser, rebekah mason resigned wednesday. she's the woman many believe is on the other end of the recorded phone sex that's humiliating the governor. >> you kiss me i love that. you know i do love that. >> reporter: the recording heard round become was made in 2014 before the governor's divorce but was released just last week.

we can hear the roar from inside. welcome back. that is soccer superstar tim howard. he's just kicking it even though he's a goalie. >> literally and figuratively. >> yes in times square. coming up we're learning ten things you do not know about tim. ten things. >> ten things. >> i want to know every one of them. he is one of the nicest guys. we'll get to that. first to our new series, it's called "what your kids don't want you to know" and t.j. holmes is back. yesterday we saw him talking with a group of tween girls about what they have on their phones and then their parents this morning we see what happens when he brings them all together for a very candid conversation, right, teej. >> let me be honest. we contacted a lot of families about doing this with us and many of them said no way when they found out what we really wanted them to do. this can be a difficult conversation in private. in front of camera, to way. you saw me sit with the kids and parents separately.
8:14 am
i bring them together and all is revealed and in particular we talk about instagram, we talk about this calculator app where you can hide content and also talk about some messaging apps. all right, so now i just want to you sit back and watch what happens. give me, give me your cell phones. >> okay. >> oh, no. >> there it is, it's a calculator. it looks like a calculator but now i want you to type in your code on this calculator. and what pops up is a file that says secret in that calculator. what you're seeing here, nothing too terrible. >> no. >> but what it's still revealing is that something you two did not know about. i guess your face tells me a lot. >> what? >> you're not posting anything inappropriate, are you? >> what do you -- you can see my instagram, mom. >> that calculator is something you hide and you have to have a secret message to go through it.
8:15 am
calculator. >> because i don't want to see -- if like people go on my camera roll i don't want them to see weird pictures. >> did you tell mom? >> no. >> parents, do you keep an eye on your kids' instagram accounts? do you keep an eye on them. >> ho. >> shout out how many instagram followers you have? >> 509. >> oh! >> 588. >> 594. >> 1,083. >> what? >> 708 i think. >> i'm in shock. like a thousand? and she's -- no. and then i just found out it's private and she has a thousand. >> you follow it. >> i don't even know a thousand people. >> you follow it. >> well, of course i do. that's one. >> cammy, i have to point something out. are you tam with the askfm app. have you looked through her -- >> we've discussed. >> i have to show you something. this is not people she's having conversations with but this is what the app allows, essentially strangers to come and seek your child out and start sending -- are you going to be okay?
8:16 am
but this is just an example of some things people were sending her. >> yes, i did know about that one. would i like to see that app completely taken off the phone? yeah, absolutely. >> now you think on your child's phone you want to take away or you just want to monitor a little better at this point. >> monitor and be more aware. >> i mean how can we keep up with all these apps? every day there's a new app that's being invented. >> my problem has been that i've had blinders on to it. didn't know about it. so now it's my responsibility to speed up and learn and participate. >> bella, honey, why are you upset? what's going on. >> i just feel like i looked at my mom and she was getting like teary-eyed so i thought that she like didn't trust me anymore. >> i don't think that's the case. i don't have to speak for your -- come on, bella, bella, bella. honey, honey, honey. she's the sweetest little thing and hate to see her upset. >> emotional. she gets emotional.
8:17 am
let me go home. let me go home. >> all right. let me clear this up for some folks. lara, you were asking -- everybody has been asking this calculator app, what are we talking about here? there are a lot of apps out there that look just like a calculator but you can hide content. the confusing part there's another one called calculator plus that acts like a regular calculator so cao to make that distinction. you hear the kids referring it all these calculator this or that but they're ghost apps that look and function like something normal but you can hide content that a lot of parents don't know about and i want you to know the follow-up, all these parents here, they've reached out since we've done this. this was a month or so ago and made changes and they say it's actually brought their families closer together and this was the biggest part of the story. we weren't expecting, you know we're going to reveal. this app, that app. this was more so about families and what happens when you're not talking. >> right. >> we saw trust break down and not having the conversation so thank those families so much and
8:18 am
actually the sister of a "gma" producer that helped us put all this together. so i can't thank them enough. >> important conversation. t.j., thank you. we'll continue it right now with our parenting expert, ericka souter of mom.me. how do we balance it? i worry about it all the time. i got a 14-year-old and 11-year-old right in the zone. >> right. >> there is a big -- there's like a fine line between trusting them and caring for their safety. >> that's the pl dollar question that faces a lot of parents that we speak to. teen, you want them to develop a sense of individuality and independence but also know they're at a stage where they can still make disastrous decisions. 30% of teens admit they sent nude pictures of themselves to their friends. 30%. so you have to weigh their right to privacy with your responsibility to protect them. guess which one is more important? >> yeah. >> protection. no question. >> you talk to some parents and experts. they say that there is no such thing as privacy. you're the parent. you're the child. end of discussion.
8:19 am
amongst my friends and i'm sure all of our viewers over there. do you ask your kids for their code? do you look through their phone? what do you recommend. >> there are rules that will help. number one discuss what is appropriate and inappropriate and don't just do it with photos. also talk about texts. you know that they want to flirt with their friends. you understand that but there has to be boundaries. they cannot just send anything because, you know, these decisions can haunt them the rest of their lives. limb their phone time. you know, a lot of these texts and these photos are sent late at night. no reason for your teenager to be texting. >> a good tip. somebody gave me and it's a hard-and-fast rule. no phones at night when you're ready for bed you hand over the phone. >> stock them in the kitchen or family room and monitor your kids' phone activity. don't hide it. don't pretend you're not doing it. this is a part of the right and privilege of having a phone. you'll check for not just what they're doing but their friends are doing.
8:20 am
text i forgot to check his phone. lew check it for me. i felt uncomfortable because i thought i'm not his parent. when i asked him he handed it over. he didn't bat an eye. we went through it together because that is he a part of the contract he had with his parents and it was a part of the system from the get-go. >> there are rule. >> what happens if your child cops to you with something they had received from a friend that is inappropriate. i mean what do you do? it's not your child but something was sent to your child if that's when you have a real talk and sit down with them and it may be embarrassing but tell them the consequences, a lot of states this is considered pornography that he can get in trouble for having it. the person can get in trouble for sending it and real-life examples of kids whose lives have been ruined. >> we found in t.j.'s piece talking about it, there's so much social pressure on these kids to be followed on social media. all those kids knew how many followers they had to the number. and there's pressure to post things that is going to get you attention?
8:21 am
>> she's 11 years old. it's a private account. >> people following them. you have to set consequences for your kids. if they break the rules, take away the phone or cancel the texting plan. you know, let them know you're serious about protecting them. >> lead by example too but how you use it. >> we've often said children want boundaryies. they actually do. they act like they don't. >> that little girl -- >> i couldn't believe that and, again, okay, mom, you trust me so why are you questioning me and the mom is saying i trust you so why do you have this thing that hides things? you just got to talk about it. >> thank you so much. ericka souter, thank you so much. such an important topic and we've got more on it coming up. right now we are going to get outside to ginger. >> i'm right behind you, lara. hey, lara, we have to get into the serious situation.
