>> opening day for the yankees fell victim to the rain and the cold. the home opener delayed until tomorrow when it would just be down right cold out there. meteorologist lee goldberg is outside of our studios with much more on the cold tonight ahead. >> turns out the lion was in april. april showers are one thing. but april snowshowers and wind, thunder, hail, we've had it all. now it's a raw rain. we've just had a wind shift. winds are picking up and the temperatures are about to drop again. wait till you see what happens as we go through the evening hours. the temperatures really plummet. another one from poughkeepsie that was just tweeted in. 4 to 5 inches of snow in poughkeepsie. unbelievable. we started out with that day near 80. that was thursday last week. we've just continued to plummet and now way below average with a couple days of snow across the area. the winter weather advisories will go down as we go through the early evening hours but the freeze warnings will stay up. we may have those for the next two nights, a freeze warning for coastal connecticut, lower westchester, new york city, new

central and southern new jersey. low ceilings, fog, airport delays, gusty wind. now down to 39 degrees and it feels like freezing. our numbers down to 33 in white plains. we're in the 20s in newburg and monticello. in april in the afternoon. back edge of the rain getting close. mixing over with some snow showers across parts of connecticut. this rain will roll offshore in a couple hours. temperatures will continue to drop. you see how much of the rain is offshore by 8:00 or 9:00. we're already freezing or below, up to the north and west. we'll clear out tonight and the winds will crank and those 20s will feel like teens tomorrow morning. in fact, even some single digit wind chills well north and west. this is fierce cold air for the beginning of april. here's what you need to know. rain and snow showers will wind down this evening. make sure you're bundled up. cold north wind will strengthen. near record cold tomorrow. record low is 21. we're not far away. wake-up wind chills in the teens and single digits. doesn't just last tomorrow. we'll let you know when it tries to warm up in the 7-day

meanwhile, it's blustery and nasty outside. >> a workout for your arm. more gun troubles tonight for new york city schools. for the third time in three weeks, a gun has been found on campus. this time it was a loaded gun. we've just learned three students are tonight in custody. it happened at ps169. this is on east 88th street in manhattan. what in the world is going on? mallory hoff with the latest. she's on campus. >> that's the very question we're asking right now. we do know a loaded gun found here on campus. three students now in custody. a lot of questions are being asked. take a look at this. this is ps169. this is 110 east 88th street on the upper east side. most importantly here, no injuries. police are investigating. this is a school with k through 12 students. here's what we know. a 13-year-old was reported to have been menacing students with a gun. school officials located that 13-year-old. he didn't have the weapon on him. they found the weapon in the pocket of a 15-year-old student

box of ammunition in the custody of a 14-year-old. the education department put out a statement saying in part, this incident is deeply alarming. we're working closely with the nypd as they investigate this extremely disturbing report. nothing is more important than the safety of all students and staff and there is zero tolerance for weapons of any kind. the president of the union for school security officers, gregory floyd, spoke with us about this situation. >> ironically, the guns being found are not in scanning schools. they're being found in nonscanning schools. which means the need for scanning is there. >> still unclear right now how this student got ahold of this loaded gun to begin with and why they would have brought it to school. live in the upper east side, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. disturbing video. we're seeing it for the first

autism punched at school. school worker has pleaded guilty to hitting the student. the tape of the assault has been released. and the parents have filed a lawsuit. eyewitness reporter lucy yang. >> this $5.5 million lawsuit will center heavily on the surveillance video, which we're going to show you, so you can judge for yourself. it does show a paraprofessional striking an autistic student in the lunch room. >> reporter: annatole is 15 years old. the nightmare is far from over. >> my son now, even when we pass by any school, he runs away from me. he's afraid of the school building now since what happened to him. >> reporter: it was august 2014 inside ps225 in brighton beach. we're told the young autistic student, who has the mental capacity of a

worker with disabled children should know how to respond in nonviolent, non-confrontational ways. we're live in downtown brooklyn tonight. lucy yang for channel 7 eyewitness news. murder charges against a teenager in westchester county accused of killing a student at iona college. 18-year-old brandon lawrence shot and killed early this sunday morning. happened in lincoln park in new rochelle. police say he was hit by a bullet, intended for somebody else. lawrence found bleeding on the ground, on the park's baseball field. they tried to save him but police say it was simply too late. >> i love my son. i loved him dearly. and he was killed so senselessly. senselessly. he was at the wrong place at the wrong time. >> 19-year-old stevenson desires charged with second degree murder. a couple was killed on long

driver slammed in to their truck. 67-year-old william kear and his 66-year-old wife joanne were pronounced dead at the hospital. they were making a left turn in ronkonkoma when their pickup truck was struck. glinka has been charged with dui while being treated for injuries at the hospital. he was speeding while running a red light and collided with the victim's car. the de blasio administration is reporting a sharp drop in violent crime numbers. city says there was a 21% drop in murders and a 14% drop in shootings in the first three months of the year. gun arrests were just over 13%. >> there's no question that this progress is further evidence of the extraordinary capacity of the nypd and the strategies that are being used effectively. >> they went on to say for the 1st quarter of 2016, new york city had the fewest murders and
