and good afternoon, everyone. i'm diana williams. david novarro is off today. >> and i'm shirleen shirleen al -- shirleen allicot. >> primary results from wisconsin, once again, shaking up the race with republican ted cruz, trouncing donald trump, 45% to 35%. and bernie sanders beating out hillary clinton, 53 to 47%. >> those results now put new york into play. ted cruz heads to the bronx this afternoon. donald trump will make a stop on long island, holding a campaign event. at grumond studios in bethpage. >> reporter: good morning. good afternoon to everyone. we've already seen a number of people already arriving to grumman studios to get their place in line, to get access inside for the rally. we are here in what is being called the free speech zone. this is a one-quarter mile stretch of south oyster bay

but later this afternoon, it will be shut down. this will be the area where demonstrators either, in support of trump or against him, will be allowed to gather. now, as for trump, we are now hearing that he is holding a high-level meeting at this hour, at trump towers, discussing his campaign. we are hearing that he has brought in an expert on delegates. clearly, his loss in wisconsin last night was not good for his campaign. his supporters are hoping to raise his spirits at the rally here tonight. >> reporter: up to 12,000 people are expected for the donald trump rally on long island tonight. eyewitness news exclusively obtained this graphic, which shows the setup for the event, inside grumman studios in bethpage. trump will be on center stage. ted cruz and bernie sanders are still relishing their big wins last night in wisconsin. cruz is holding a meet and greet at a restaurant in the

sanders will hold a rally in philadelphia tonight. the clinton campaign is also busy today, the former new york senator was in philly this morning, speaking to the afl- cio. here in the bronx this morning, at a rally to support clinton, latino members gathered at the courthouse to say clinton is the right choice for latino new yorkers in the primary on april 19th. he will be back in brooklyn tomorrow for a town hall event with veterans. here, you're taking a live look back here in bethpage. you see again this free speech zone. the barricades all set up, ready to go. the trump rally, officially set to begin at 7:00 tonight. fuplan on attending, you should know, no bags are allowed, everyone will be passing through metal detectors.

the hicksville-bethpage area around 7:00 tonight, you should expect extensive traffic delays. we're live in bethpage, kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, kristin. and remember to make eyewitness news your home leading up to the primary. follow us on twitter and on facebook, as we follow the candidates. frightening moments on long island when a school bus erupted in flames, moments after the children ran off. this video shows the empty bus, near lakewood avenue in merric this morning. you can see thick, black smoke, rising from the bus that is fully engulfed in flames. authorities say when the bus stopped at the light, all the kids got off. no one was hurt. the fire appeared to start in the engine. new at noon, parents on alert, and a search is under way for a possible predator who tried to lure a 12-year-old girl. that girl said he she was walking home from school on van court avenue in osnick. when a man approached her he

marcus solis is live with more. >> reporter: van portland avenue, the girl working her way down the hill. when the attempted luring took place monday afternoon. it was 4:30. the girl, as you said, was on her way home from school, after an after-school activity, at dormer high school not far from here. the vehicle she described is a white van. the driver told the girl taher mother had been involved in a car accident. and that she needed to come with him so he could give her a ride. the girl was immediately suspicious. because, well, her mother doesn't drive. and when she approached the vehicle, the driver made a u- turn and took off. the girl got home, went to her mother and they both went to the police station to report it. and the 12-year-old got kudos because of the way she handled that situation. >> she actually handled it great. you know, the maturity level that she expressed was unbelievable. it was great she came in. she was composed. she remembered specific things about the van.

>> reporter: and police posting this on their social media page, hoping to turn to into a lesson for parents to talk to their children about the dangers. they believe this is not part of any pattern reported in the area. nevertheless, police are stepping up patrols in this area and also by the school from which the girls were walking. we're live in ossinning, marcus marcus solis. we're learning about a story in west manhattan. a portion of the west side highway will be closed as crews check the structure of a retaining wall. the problem is 125th street and it is impacting northbound lanes. work is going to start at 8:00 tonight. and is going to run through 7:00 tomorrow morning. the northbound lanes will remain closed during the work. as you may recall, a major

collapsed near third street. that caused major detours for several months. the city council's transportation committee is set to vote later today on a new set of rules for pedestrian plazas in the five boroughs. the changes could limit where costume characters, the naked painted ladies and bus ticket sellers could operate. the push for change follows an uptick in complaints about aggressive panhandling in times square. they will vote tomorrow. yukon lady huskies are champions again, win their fourth consecutive college title. they rolled over syracuse last night. it was perhaps most memorable for three seniors who were part of each title team. morgan and breanna getting a whole lot of praise for last flight's win. >> i keep saying unbelievable is a word to describe it. but i don't know what other word you could use.

a murder mystery has students on edge at the texas campus in austin. the body of female students was found at a creek. this morning, detectives fanned out across the campus to search for clues. the university president is calling the murder a tragedy and said the school is doing everything possible to ensure the students and staff are safe. >> our home has been violated. >> so far, the victim has not been identified. investigators say they expect the murder investigation to be

sometime. gawker has filed a moge, asking for a new trial in the hulk hogan sex tape case. the media giant also requested that damages awarded to hogan be thrown out or drastically reduced hogan, whose real name is terry valeta, sued gawker for posting a video of him having sex with someone not his wife. hogan won. owen labree has brought in a new lawyer. he said the previous defense team failed to challenge the charge of luring a minor for the purposes of sex by computer. they said went on to say there was information from social media accounts that could have challenged the credibility of the case. >> attorneys make mistakes.

high, thin cirrus clouds for the afternoon. and we got really nice weather. that's some cirrus there. that looks good. that's a sign of severe weather. we have a temperature of 44 degrees. a little southerly wind coming in now. that's key because slowly, winds will bring in warmer air. may not feel like it on the south, facing coast. but it will. pressure is at 3037, falling a little bit. yesterday's high was 33. normal is 58. so we were 50 degrees cooler than normal. we'll be a little warmer today. and the sun sets at 7:26. and that will be pretty. temperatures rise. but rain will be come in tomorrow. cooler, breezy wind for the mets home opener. it will be sunny. when the first pitch is thrown. we've got a cold shot on saturday. maybe snowflakes and rain on saturday. 42 in teterboro, over in la guardia. 43, 29, white plains.

i tell you what, newberg, just cloudy. new clouds at 25. got a little wind speed here out of the south. mostly coming up here. will make the southeastern shores maybe not feel too much colder. because the water temperature is 46. and the air is in the low 40s. so it's not going to feel all that much colder with the wind coming up from the south. this front comes in tomorrow. and ahead of that front. more of that southerly wind comes up. that picks up the moisture and the warmth. so you'll see this afternoon, we'll get to about 46 around the park. 50 around morristown. clouds start to increase tonight. the first rain that really gets going here is going to be after the morning commute. and that will be showers out ahead of the front itself. the front starts to get here at 2:00 to 3:00 in the afternoon. notice the red spots? that can be an embedded thunderstorm going by. cloud-to-ground lightning. and downpours of rain. and i think we're looking at the order of about a half inch to inch of rain around. even as we go into friday night.

a tv news crew comes to a rescue. a police chase ends ends with an officer saving a life and teenage mutant ninja turtles, spotted at the yankees game. just some of the stories that began and caught our

amy and val cater, a husband- and-wife storm chasing team for an oklahoma tv station, were at the scene of a fire when they spotted a man in trouble. jason was using something to stop the flames when he got trapped. that's when the casters yelled for him to run to their vehicle. he was not hurt. he even returned to has job, helping firefighters hours later. just incredible. a dramatic scene caught here on a police dashboard camera in no -- missouri. an officer tried to pull over a man for a traffic violation. the man sped up, lost control and rolled his vehicle into the grassy area. the driver who had been thrown from the car was found in cardiac arrest. the officer, doing cpr immediately saved his life. it is unclear if the man was trying to flee or if he suffered a medical emergency. tray traded their pizza and

hot dogs at yankees stadium. two ninja turtles showed up behind home plate. the fans won a contest by john oliver, to look like riffraff in the luxury seats. it's the response to the team, saying fans can no longer print tickets at home and the team's c.o.o., saying people who buy resale tickets may never have sat in a premium location. >> the seats for them was 25 cents. and you had the great master sitting there, donnatelo and mikel angelo. >> my -- michael michaelangelo. >> and my take away from that is if we dress like that, we might get those seats, too right? >> you might. amazon is expanding its same-day delivery service in new jersey. plainfield, trenton, princeton and jersey city. it is also expanding in 11 other u.s.

to new york. donald trump and ted cruz are holding rallies in our area later today. up to 12,000 people are expected at trump's rally in bethpage. and protestors will be there as well. the rallies come after cruz and democrat bernie sanders had big wins in the wisconsin primary. the search is on for a possible predator in westchester county. police say someone tried to lure a 12-year-old girl in a van upon, by saying her mom was in an accident. the girl was on her way home from school and waved off a man. she told the mother, who called police. and hello again. i'm shirleen allicot. >> and i'm diana williams in for david novarro. new, a protest planned for this afternoon. outside of pet pups. a pet store in paramas. and animal lovers were upset, after the pet store owners was accused of keeping injured puppies in a van outside the store. but the owner claims the puppies were injured when the

>> they are live outside that store in paramis. toni? >> reporter: yes, and at this point, as we speak, there are no charges filed as we speak. the prosecutor's office is still investigating. now, we want to show you the pictures that police took of the puppies that were housed in that van. this was sunday night. two patrol officers heard the 67 dogs whining inside the van. they opened the door and found the dogs. they say there was a strong smell of urine and feces. several were housed, two to four to a cage. they also said the van was about 35 degrees inside. there was a space heater that was not working. the dogs were taken to ordel animal hospital to be checked out. a spokesman said four of the dogs had to be quarantined because they were sick. they are all now in the custody of animal control, while this is being investigated. the owner, vincent losacko, recently had his middlesex store shut down over 267 charges with his paramis store

what he told you us today. -- told us today. >> to answer the question, they were in a customized van that was fully insulated and heated. the temperature wasn't taken until the door was open for who knows how long? the police report that they looked in the van. the van has no windows. to see the puppies in the van, you have to expose all of the puppies. you have to open all of that sliding door. and let the cold air in and the air out. >> reporter: one man showed up when he saw the camera and the pet store owner and spoke his peace. >> this guy left these dogs out overnight. it's disgusting. this guy has got four places like this. and every single one of them, there are allegations of neglect. and bad animals being sold. animals with kennel coughs and it's just disgusting.

eyewitness news, we'll talk to the owner who says he has a right to run a business. and says he has a quality business. he also has a store at emerson university. the mayor showed up out here today. we got a chance to talk to him on camera. you'll hear what he has to say about how he's monitoring that story. that's coming up also later on, on eyewitness news. for live here in paramus, toni yates. new at noon, a rally was held on the steps of city hall, to push for the passage of a new bill that will push wrongful conviction. they are demanding the new york state legislature take action on resolution, 979. it requires police interrogations to be fully reported and will help end false confessions and misidentifications. members of the central park 5, the men falsely convicted of raping a central park jogger in 1989 were also on hand to honor the bill.

involved eyewitness misidentification. an additional 14 involve false confessions. there are simple, readily- available reforms that we could implement today, that would prevent these kinds of miscarriages of justice. >> the city council will hold a meeting on the legislation later today. uber drivers are facing off today on the proposed ban on ride-sharing. they are opposing the ordinance that would drive uber out of not only the airport, but also the train station. this ordinance would require that every driver pay $1500 annually, in order to continue working in newark. connecticut hopes that north carolina's loss is their gain, when it comes to major businesses. state lawmakers are ordering charlotte. because they recently blocked

bankbank of america has already voiced its approval of the law. it was sent just hours after pay pal announced it would not bring 400 jobs to charlotte. turning now to the latest in the alabama governor scandal. state lawmakers there are trying to move to impeach robert bentley, who is accused of having an affair with a top aide. but the governor is fighting back. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: calls for alabama's governor to step down are coming from friends who were in the >> we're never tried to impeach a governor. but the process starts today. >> reporter: lawmakers on both sides was aisle have filed this resolution. it accuses him of firing his top law enforcement officer, based in part upon his discovery of the inappropriate relationship between governor bentley and his political adviser. >> he truly loves the people of this state. he'll step down. he'll relieve us of this pressure and this burden that he's placed on us.

embarrassing the governor are conversations between bentley and his alleged girlfriend. they came to light last month, after he fired his law enforcement secretary. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: none of the recordings sound like the traditional christian values bentley celebrates. he's been apologizing ever since. >> have i made mistakes? yes, i have. and i admit those. >> i point no fingers at anybody else. i make no excuses. >> i am just apologizing to her. and to my family and to the state of alabama. >> reporter: but now, critics are pointing to campaign finance records that show he spent more than $1700 of voter money on disposable cell phones. fire the law enforcement director, who alleges the government hid the affair. said bentley didn't like e- mail, preferred texts, and would change phones often. the governor denies any coverup.

driver suffered minor injuries when his car collided with a light rail train in newark. it happened just before 6:30 this morning on south franklin avenue, near bridgebrook park. none of the people on board the train including the light rail operator was hurt. the train rail was briefly suspended but back on track this afternoon. a touching moment for a little girl. 5-year-old lizzy myers from ohio got her wish to see pope francis. it was part of what her family calls their visual bucket list. her parents made that list to show lizzy some of the wonders of the world before she loses her sight completely. abc's elizabeth hur has more. >> the family said this all started with a visit to their local observatory, to look at the moon and the stars. that's where they met a reporter who shared lizzy's story. and then offers to help the family started pouring in,

possible. >> reporter: lizzy myers waves and smiles, hoping to catch pope francis's attention, as he drives by. at first, like so many others, the little one is just glad to have caught a glimpse of the holy father. then this. >> you're awe struck. i mean, not just to be with the pope. >> he blessed elizabeth's eyes. he asked that we pray for him and said that he will be praying for us. >> it's something they will treasure more than ever. perhaps when she understands the gravity of this blessing. >> there will come a time when we will have to tell her. i dread that day. but right now, we just don't feel that it's necessary for her to know. i think it will hold her back. >> reporter: lizzy doesn't know it yet, but she's slowly going blind because of a rare genetic disease. >> rome was the place. pope because we're catholic. and also because of lizzy's interest in art and big things.

to meet the pope. so with a visual bucket list on hand, the myers flew to home, hoping for a miracle. and once their story made the news, they said their prayers were answered. >> what pope francis has done for her, if there is any chance for a miracle, it will be there. >> reporter: lizzy is already suffering from hearing loss and wears hearing aids. her family said they went to rome, hoping for some amazing memories. and now they say they will continue to pray for that miracle. i'm elizabeth hur for channel 7, eyewitness news. >> quite a story. >> yeah. >> hug yourself after that. it's just -- >> yeah. >> real emotional. >> that's a toughy. this afternoon, we've got some sunshine. and it a little on the chilly side. make sure, there's got to be a little on the cold side. we will warm up, however. but the result of our getting warmer? we get rain. there you go. that's spring time for you. there you go. a little wispy cirrus clouds.

we're going to be looking at that southerly wind coming up. this front comes tote west. gets to us. detroit, getting in later on. cincinnati, down towards st. louis. the front comes eastward to us. you see clouds increase overnight tonight. rain starts tomorrow around 11:00. we get through the morning commute. there's a line here. going to be a pop-up shower or thunderstorm. this latest shows it being a little bit weaker. but there will still be a shower into friday night and then early friday. up to the north here might be a wet snowflake in the catskills and maybe a little sprinkle. you see by afternoon, the sun is going to be out. that's good news for friday. we got a little baseball gaming on -- game going on with the mets. rainfall guidance. about a half inch to three- quarters inch overnight thursday into friday. breezy this afternoon. 46. temperatures rising overnight. we'll be at 43. then tomorrow, breezy and milder. it will be raining midday, into the afternoon. and into the nighttime.
