was held in an old grumman air hanger. right now we're outside the hangar in front of the f14. donald trump has not held any huge rallies or big events ever since he declared his presidential bid last year but tonight that all changed and rather dramatically. >> reporter: after his loss in wisconsin last night, a homecoming for donald trump. >> first of all, it's great to be home. this is home. it's great to be home. we love new york. >> reporter: a supportive and large crowd somewhere between 8,000 and 10,000, and here trump blasted his closest rival, ted cruz. reminding everyone of what cruz once said in a debate about new york. >> i've got this guy standing over there, looking at me, talking about new york values with scorn on his face, with hatred, with hatred of new york. >> reporter: the latest polling shows donald trump with a commanding lead in new york. he's already looking ahead to

>> by the way, i will beat hillary so badly in the general election. >> reporter: there were only two minor protests inside with two arrests. just before the rally a man in a red, white, and blue cowboy hat was taken out. and 20 minutes in to his speech, the crowd chanted, pointing to a couple protesters. they were also escorted out. >> don't hurt the person. don't hurt the person. >> reporter: this crowd was loud and many spoke of anger, disappointment, us against them. >> the politicians promised us things and they didn't do what they promised and this is how this man has risen to where he is today. it's a lot of frustration. >> i just think he's great. we should definitely build that wall. they need to take back the country honestly. >> reporter: trump wrapped up with a plea to vote april 19th, and he closed on a familiar line. >> we are going to win, win, win. we're going to make america great again. i love you. >> and looking ahead there is

and april 19th. the next primary is the new york primary. we're going to see a lot of all these candidates, both republicans and democrats over the next 12 days in new york state. on the republican side, looking ahead, donald trump will have to win 57% of all future delegates. it's a little bit tougher for ted cruz. he has to win 80% of all those delegates. dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. while there were cheers inside the rally, it was a different scene outside. hundreds of protesters lined the streets both for and against trump. eyewitness news reporter josh einiger is there with that part of our coverage. >> when they hit that magic number of 11,000, the capacity inside the venue where trump was speaking, a lot of supporters were turned away. they left the old grumman campus only to encounter a pen full of anti-trump protesters. the police had to scramble and

sides could yell at each other for hours. >> reporter: it might have been unseasonably cold tonight, but along oyster bay road, the tempers were hot and a dueling rally separated at one point by horses and police in riot gear. >> he's making americans afraid of muslims. he's making americans afraid of mexicans. and he degrades women. >> their suggestion is that somehow this president, potential president, is a racist, donald j. trump is not a racist. >> he calls cruz lying ted and nasty guy, he comes off as a bully and i think there's so many people that want to support him but they get turned off temperament. >> reporter: several hundred protesters squared off outside grumman studios tonight, and amid ugly chants and signs and insults hurled both ways -- >> there's a lot of anger here. >> reporter: there was at least some room for stop. robert epstein is a high school student from westchester. for a kid that wants to study

>> i think there's a lot we can learn about the current political divide from experiencing it. special. >> a lot of people are interested in this election more than any other year. i think it's really getting people engaged. >> reporter: engaged and mostly civil. there seemed to be at least one cop for every protester. and despite a few hairy moments, nassau's police commissioner called the night success when it came to keeping the peace. >> we don't have political positions and we're just here to protect both sides and provide for the safety and security and make sure it's a safe event. >> it was safe. there were no arrests. at least not out here. and for all that shouting, each side did seem to agree. at one point they all spontaneously started chanting usa, usa. live in bethpage, long island tonight, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. meanwhile, a chilly reception today for trump's republican challenger, ted cruz.

endear himself to new yorkers by lampooning so-called new york values. ted cruz shouted at today at a restaurant in the bronx. it happened after the bronx lighthouse prep academy canceled its bigger event with cruz. it claimed the senator from texas is racist, homophobic, and misogynous. >> his values don't reflect on us as a school. if ted cruz doesn't want us or mostly from immigrant backgrounds in this country, then we don't want him inside our school. >> so he didn't go. cruz tonight attending private fundraising events in new york city. he'll continue his campaigning in new york city with an event in brooklyn. ohio governor john kasich will also be there campaigning in brooklyn and park slope at vfw. on the democratic side, hillary clinton is launching an all-out effort to win votes in her home state. clinton will be campaigning tomorrow in new york city. on friday she'll head to buffalo and rochester.

the city for events on saturday, possibly sunday. today she was campaigning in pennsylvania. ahead of that state's primary on april 26th. her opponent bernie sanders also campaigning today in pennsylvania, holding an event tonight in philadelphia. he's got more stops scheduled in that city tomorrow. friday the brooklyn native will travel here to new york city. he'll appear on the view which appears here on channel 7. we invite you to stay with eyewitness news and abc news as new york becomes, for the first time since 1976, relevant to the presidential primary elections. candidates visiting here now like never before, even taking out local political ads for the first time in memory. get it all at abc7ny. new at 11:00, a teenager in stable condition tonight after being stabbed at a subway station in brooklyn. police say the victim was stabbed in the torso at the mezzanine in bed-stuy. it's not clear what the motive was. there are no arrests.

brooklyn tonight for two people shot while just looking out their window. stray bullets flew in to the second floor apartment this week, hitting a woman right above her eye and grazed a man on top of his head. eyewitness news reporter jim dolan is in east flatbush where a vigil was held tonight. >> she was inside her home. she was cooking lunch for her grandson when 61-year-old loreth pierre heard arguing. it hit her friend first. it hit her square in the forehead. now this neighborhood calling out all those involved in gun violence. >> you're murderers. you're shooters, right? >> reporter: they're angry that a grandmother, 61-year-old lorita pierre, sitting in her own home, was hit with a stray

>> she was doing her grandma duties up there in the kitchen. she knew she was in her house. there was no reason for her to feel unsafe. for something like this to happen, it's going to change her outlook on >> we've got to hold each other accountable for the behavior that's going on out here. it don't take nothing to take a life. >> reporter: tonight some members of the community came to pray for mrs. pierre, but more than that. >> we do that to reach out to those involved in that lifestyle and don't think there's a way out because it's popular to be violent. >> reporter: ms. pierre was struck her right eye. she will survive though. she may lose some eyesight. >> we have so many problems here. access to the gun, quick use of the gun, can't even aim the gun. everything went so wrong. >> i have a number of emotions right now. some of it is anger. some of it is i'm thankful for

students at one of the largest colleges in the u.s. are on edge tonight as police investigate a possible murder mystery. the body of a woman in her 20s was found at the bottom of a creek yesterday at the university of texas in austin. police have not released the victim's name nor would confirm that she was a student at the college, but classmates say she was a well known dance student. police are conducting extra patrols and warning students not to walk alone. meanwhile, police on long island are trying to figure out who would steal a wheelchair from a disabled boy. the wheelchair was stolen from outside a home in holbrook. kathleen bermelia said her 10-year-old son cody who suffers from several disorders including cerebral palsy needs the chair to get around. >> the only way i can think about it and not be sad is that somebody needed it maybe more than we did. maybe it was somebody homeless who needed to sell it for money

have somewhere to sleep at night. >> this is what the wheelchair looks like. the family is hoping insurance covers the cost of a new one. crimestoppers is offering up to $5,000 for information leading to an arrest. a 4-hour flight ending where it started after a passenger plane is forced to return to hawaii because there wasn't enough fuel. the united flight was nearly halfway to san francisco. that means it was over nothing but pacific ocean. when the crew announced the fuel emergency. the plane with 264 passengers onboard was flown back to honolulu. >> we were predicting we were going to have stronger tailwinds and now we have stronger headwinds. >> we know to an extent what the winds will be but that's a long stretch of water and there are no weather stations out there. >> united said the flight experienced what they call overburn. the plane used more fuel than expected because of strong headwinds. tomorrow the full new york city council is expected to vote

end of central part, midtown. central park south. looks nice tonight. why still have partly to mostly cloudy skies. 46. we told you how temperatures would flat line and rise later at night. we've reached a high of 48 degrees today. that's 10 degrees above average. by sunset the heavy rain is actually moving out. you have spotty showers tomorrow morning, especially over long island. and the heavier rain and thunder, that's from late morning to 5:00 in the evening. we're seeing the heavy rain move out however we'll get an inch of standing water. mainly dry for the mets opener. the weekend is problematic because we have rain, period of wet snow showers, accumulation not out of the question in a few localized spots, then windy, blustery and cold. speaking of mid 40s, that's where we are now.

actually rising to near 50 by morning. it's mostly cloudy in new york city, right be a spritz, but definitely spotty drizzle or showers. it's getting steadier late morning in to the midday through 4:00. i think after 5:00 it starts to taper. i don't have showers posted at 7:00, but there will be lingering showers and the wind will also be gusty out of the south. right now it's just clouds. there's the steady showers right here. might be looking at that and saying that's pretty far away. what we'll have to watch out for on radar is a ribbon of showers that forms overnight and goes to long island and connecticut by dawn. look how that forms by 7 a.m. showers over connecticut, long island. back in to new york city and jersey shore and parts of westchester. it's getting more widespread and steadier late morning, peaking around 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. then trying to make a quick exit during the morning commute. then we'll start to dry out patchy showers later on tonight. cloudy and windy.

this is a bizarre story. a woman argued with her doctor before she got hernia surgery, expected he'd have not nice things to say about her, so she hid a recording device in her hair during the operation and was stunned by what it captured. ester said the staff in the hospital in houston, texas laughed as they made disparaging remarks about her body and attitude all while she was unconscious on the table. she found one comment to be racially charged that referenced the movie precious. >> it was meet precious as though i was this fat black woman. >> hospital sent easter a letter saying it had alerted staff to be mindful of comments at all times. she's now thinking about filing a lawsuit. in tonight's health alert, a potential link between sugary drinks, bad carbs, and cancer.
