and it's still causing disruptions in the area right now. >> we're talking 58th street between 6th and 7th avenue. it's all closed as it has been for hours. kemberly richardson is there with the latest. >> witnesses tell me roughly three and a half hours before all of this, there were red flags that there was a problem. take a look at 58th street again between 6th and 7th avenues. it's still a mess. tonight roughly 350 customers and 14 buildings do not have water. as officials with the department of environmental protection try and pinpoint exactly what happened. >> i never go and get nothing while i'm on the job. they stopped, let me go get a coffee real quick. >> reporter: it's a good thing jonathan did. seconds later, this happened in the exact spot where he had been sitting in a cement truck. cell phone video captured the

that suddenly erupted on 58th street. several hours later jonathan took a look at couldn't believe how close he came to seriously getting hurt. he's telling his story only to eyewitness news. >> the asphalt cracked and all the smoke was coming out like crazy. it was like everything was going to fall down. like it was going to be a huge sinkhole. >> reporter: officials say around 9:40 this morning there was a leak in a water main here below 58th street between 6th and 7th avenues. the water spilled on to a steam pipe underground and in two separate spots around the corner from each other, the chain reaction caused vapors. witnesses say at least seven stories high to shoot up in the air. >> there was a huge cloud of white smoke and then i got like a waxy substance on my glasses. and it was like pretty hard to clean off. i got it all over my coat. >> reporter: it all happened right as construction crews were beginning a job here on 58th street. several workers told me there were red flags much earlier this

they say specifically at this building with the red park sign. this man didn't want to show his face. tried to put his car in the garage. >> they told me i couldn't park over there because they have water problems. >> reporter: water problems at 6:00 in the morning, roughly three and a half hours before this happened. then at 7:30, crews were about to start pouring cement. >> they stopped us. it's simple because it's too much steam. >> too much steam in the cellar and subcellar of that structure. they were ordered to evacuate the building. crews were out here taking samples which will be tested at the lab. the concern now is asbestos. the road was damaged out here. it buckled there. no telling how long that will take to be fixed as well as the pipes underneath 58th street. another thing, no one was hurt out here.

kemberly richardson. eyewitness news. big delays right now on the new jersey turnpike. all this because of emergency repairs. two lanes closed on the southbound eastern spur of the turnpike near exit 15x. traffic backed up to the tolls to enter the turnpike. a search is underway tonight for the person who shot and killed a rutgers newark student and wounded his roommate. police say 21-year-old shani patel's body was found inside his central avenue apartment in newark last night. patel's roommate, a 23-year-old rutgers graduate, was also wounded. investigators believe the shooting may be drug-related. a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest. investigators are on the scene of a suspicious fire that destroyed a home in rocklin county. flames broke out on the second floor of a home in hill crest this morning. the homeowner and her adult son were inside the house at the time. they told firefighters they heard an explosion. the homeowner is okay but her

crime scene still here as they try to figure out who did this and how. >> reporter: crime scene detectives spent all day collecting evidence of the brazen crime, a burglary at a bank that netted the suspects tons of cash from the safe and jewelry and valuables from safety deposit boxes. >> this is a new one i've heard of. the only way they can figure out how to do it is if they scouted and surveyed before they actually did it. >> reporter: it happened in this orthodox jewish neighborhood sometime between when the bank branch closed for the sabbath friday afternoon and when it reopened for business this morning. cops say arriving employees discovered $280,000 in cash was missing. police later found a chain link fence that had been cut, providing access to a ladder and a rooftop hatch that led in to the bank. >> i never heard of anybody robbing a bank going through the roof. usually they go in there guns blazing. >> what if they came during the day with guns? there might be a shooting. >> fortunately that was not the

nasa tonight said it stabilized its kepler space craft after it went in to emergency mode last week. engineers trying to figure out exactly what went wrong some 75 million miles away. that's a difficult thing to do. nasa says they want to confirm the space craft is healthy enough to continue its observations. since 2009 kepler has detected 5,000 planets beyond the milky way solar system. for the first time in more than a hundred years, the number of wild tigers roaming earth has gone up. in the latest global census, groups and governments counting nearly 3900 tigers, 700 more than were counted in 2010.

our area who have faced big challenges in their life. they're about to perform at radio city music hall tonight. the garden of dreams foundation hosting its annual talent show. advice for the big night comes from a big broadway star. here's amy freeze. >> i remember the very first time i performed and being so scared that not a lot of sound came out but the second time more came out, and the third time more came out. >> reporter: renee, who stars as angelica in the broadway hit "hamilton" was invited to the garden of dreams talent show rehearsal. she gave feedback to all the performers from duets, the subtle, even the star struck. >> that was beautiful. >> oh, my god. i'm such a huge fan. for her to say that was just great, so amazing. >> that was awesome. >> reporter: what an intimate setting to get tips from someone who's been where they dream of

a heartfelt thank you from loved ones to the first responders who jumped in to action when a plane crashed in a long island neighborhood. now two survivors are recovering in the hospital. eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is live in bayport with more. >> we just caught up with a group of those first responders here at the bayport fire department. yes, this pilot and passenger were very lucky that their plane just happened to go down in a neighborhood filled with police officers, volunteer firefighters, and nurses. >> their legs were entangled in the shaft of the steering column and half of the engine compartment.

scene as first responders and even neighbors rushed to help pilot scott clifford and his passenger michael. >> i'm glad that they're going to be okay. we prayed for them all night and their families and i hope they're going to get through their recovery with this. >> reporter: it was around 7:00 last night when the small plane crashed in this neighborhood in bayport. clifford and rome had just left the bayport aerodome to head back to orange county where they reside. the plane's engine suddenly lost power. resident joseph walsh says his kids were front lawn when they saw the plane go down. they ran inside to get walsh, a volunteer firefighter. walsh grabbed this nearby garden hose and started spraying. >> everybody was yelling don't use water because there was electrical lines down. but if we didn't put the fire out, we weren't going to get to the guys. >> reporter: clifford and rome are recovering at stony brook university hospital.

we'd like to extend our deepest gratitude to the good samaritans in the bayport community as well as the first responders for their heroic efforts in helping rescue scott and michael. >> usually when you have a rescue or something like this, typically it's one person doing a very big job. every single one of these people had an intricate part as a team that provided the best outcome for the patient. >> authorities have also said that there also was a lot of heroism on the part of the pilot, scott clifford, that he was able to land this plane in this neighborhood missing houses, people on the ground. he only clipped a few trees and a utility pole. we're live in bayport, kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> just incredible. one large commuter railroad in our area about to install new audio and visual surveillance. they'll be listening.
