trailer was being used or how many children were being cared for. we'll bring you more information as it becomes available. now to the family tragedy on long island. a young mother walking her dog home after she dropped off her child for school. then just like that it was over. the out of control car jumping the curb and killing the woman and the dog. it happened in the suffolk county hamlet of east islip. long island reporter kristin thorne at the scene with our lead story. >> skye brunette-- skye brunetti's family says it happened right here. brunetti's family members can't believe this happened. >> she was the best person you could ever think of. beautiful person and i loved her a lot. >> reporter: skye brunetti's brother says his sister was a

and good soul. >> wonderful mother. did everything for her son. she was always there for her son. she stayed home. she did what she had to do as a parent. it was great. >> reporter: it was skye brunetti's morning routine to take the family dog, walk her son to the bus stop, then return home. but this morning she didn't make it home. police say 50-year-old barbara caton of east islip driving this white chrysler jumped the curb and killed brunetti and her dog. police aren't releasing details on what caused her to veer off union boulevard. the car struck the 25-year-old right in front of her home. caton was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. many of brunetti's friends and family members came to the scene in disbelief. >> she was an amazing person.

more than anything. >> brunetti's brother told me the car was speeding before it hit her. police are not confirming that, just saying they're still investigating the accident. kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. a deadly love triangle in manhattan. tonight a 19-year-old man charged with murdering the father of his girlfriend's child. police say gustavo rodriguez stabbed 22-year-old xavier olivares in the chest. stabbed him several times. investigators say the victim confronted rodriguez while he was walking with his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend near east 95th on morning. >> i feel very bad about what happened. >> the woman flagged down a cab, took olivares to a hospital, that's where he later died. the woman initially told police the stabbing was a random crime but detectives found some surveillance video that contradicted her story. so far though, no charges have been filed against the woman. police in brooklyn now searching for a man they say

in east new york. happened when the girl was on her way to school this morning. police say a man grabbed her arm and exposed himself. when the girl screamed, the suspect ran off. we're hearing tonight exclusively from the mother of a disabled teenager whom police say was molested by a staff member at her school. the victim is just 14 years old but has the mental capacity of a 4-year-old. the victim lives at the christopher school. someone walked in on the staff member, 51-year-old yakubu abdulazeez molesting her this week. the victim's mother spoke to aj ross. >> when she be in the bed sleeping, he comes in the room, he touches her every night. that's really, really wrong and that's what hurt me the most, she probably trusted him. >> abdulazeez charged with having sexual contact with a minor and sexual abuse.

repair the water system in the area. 58th street between 6th and 7th avenues also shut down. a water main broke yesterday. that spilled water on to a steam pipe. repair work slow going because of all the underground utilities. several hundred residents in the area are getting bottled water tonight. now to vote 2016. just one week away from the new york primary. one week from tonight and a new poll out tonight shows presidential frontrunner donald trump and hillary clinton with double digit leads. trump, john kasich, and bernie sanders were stumping across the state today. senator sanders tried to gain ground against mrs. clinton by telling the crowd in syracuse how the pair differed when it comes to fundraising. he said his average campaign donation was $27 while sanders claims clinton raised $25 million from special interest groups. >> does anybody seriously believe that you can be an agent

from the most powerful special interest in this country? >> mrs. clinton skipping the campaign trail and attending a roundtable discussion about equal pay for women. right now republican frontrunner donald trump is holding a rally in rome, new york upstate. came out swinging against senator ted cruz. trump once again stressing the system that allowed cruz to win delegates in colorado he says is rigged. he said it's set up so that crooked politicians, his words, make sure they get someone in office who keeps the status quo. then he went after cruz's character. >> i'm not complaining about the states i won. those are okay. of which i won, 22. and cruz won 10. did you ever hear him say i'm the only ted cruz. lying ted has the bible up here. he is a liar. >> meanwhile john kasich criticized trump and cruz in his rally in new york today. he said their mudslinging is bad for the party and bad for the

kasich said the rhetoric exploits anger, resentment, and turns fear in to hatred and divides americans. how to handle the enormous power of wall street. this is a lightning rod issue between bernie sanders and hillary clinton. wall street is a crucial part of the local economy. sanders favors demolition. clinton tends toward regulation. eyewitness news reporter stacey sager up in the newsroom. the stakes here are enormous financially and politically. >> the stakes are enormously high. for the candidates and for wall street. but most importantly for the economy. there are nuances between hillary clinton and bernie sanders on this. how much it will matter to new york voters remains to be seen. >> reporter: he'd like to break up the big banks. she'd like to make wall street work for main street. what we know here in new york is with one more week till the primary, expect each candidate's

that means hearing the name goldman sachs once again in this bernie sanders ad. sanders challenging hillary again and again to release the transcripts of her paid speeches for the investment bank. >> i will release all of my transcripts. which is not difficult for me to do because there are no transcripts. >> from the clinton campaign, a stronger effort to push back. >> i believe there's a concerted effort to tear me down, attack me, criticize me, and there certainly has been a double standard. >> reporter: experts say hillary must walk a fine line between liberal democrats and most of the wall street establishment who favors her over sanders and over trump. >> the key behind it is the devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.

on regulatory issues such as the glass steagall act. sanders wants to reinstate it, between investment banks, commercial banks, and insurance companies. hillary clinton would continue without them. glass steagall repealed during her husband's administration. in the end, it will all come down to voters. their economic priorities and just how much sweeping change new yorkers really want. >> question is what wins? do new yorkers want a pound of flesh from an industry that provides millions and millions of dollars and taxes and lots of jobs or do they want to say okay, you don't like the banks, we don't like the banks but let's get on with this? >> the latest quinnipiac poll shows hillary clinton maintaining a 13-point lead over bernie sanders in the new york primary but sanders is ahead with young voters. he wants to make public colleges and universities tuition-free with money from attacks on wall street. >> fascinating look at the two candidates' proposal.

new at 6:00, another dramatic building project proposed by new york governor cuomo. this time a long bridge spanning the long island sound for the north shore of nassau county and forking to westchester county and the bronx. who pays for this and what about the environmental impact? eyewitness news reporter n.j. burkett with the story in oyster bay. >> you can't let a pebble stand in the way of a bulldozer. those are the words from the governor of new york who says a bridge across long island sound needs to happen.

he said that before. but he's sounding more and more serious. >> i wasn't for it as a little kid and i'm not for it now as an adult. >> reporter: residents say it's unthinkable. a super highway through oyster bay and a bridge across long island sound to westchester but the governor seems determined to move forward. >> why can't you have a bridge that goes from nassau to westchester or the bronx? >> reporter: in a speech to the association for a better new york, governor cuomo called for a feasibility study to make it happen. the seaford oyster bay expressway was not intended to end in syosset. the expressway would be extended north for a crossing not unlike the chesapeake bay bridge, which stretches for 23 miles. >> you're not going to build anything, especially on long island and everybody says great, that's exactly what i wanted, where i want it. but you can't have a pebble stop a bulldozer either.

in newark and hudson county have audio and video surveillance. the agency's interim executive director said the tools are in place to keep passengers safe. we told you about this yesterday on eyewitness news. several groups have expressed concerns over privacy issues. a brazen bank robbery in brooklyn. detectives now investigating the possibility the borough park heist was an inside job. $300,000 was stolen and as many as 100 safety deposit boxes pried open. the valuables inside just gone. investigators say the thieves cut holes in a chain link fence then climbed a ladder to the roof. they shimmied in to the vault. detectives now interviewing bank employees. stay tuned. a wet start to the day but the sun as you can see finally

got up to 58 officially after a morning low of 45. that 45-degree temperature occurred while it was raining this morning. pretty miserable. normal high is around 60 degrees. 90, your record high set back in 1977. cooler air moves in tonight. there will be a hard freeze in some of the outlying areas, especially well north and west of the city. lots of sun with a gradual warmup as we head in to the weekend. i don't see much in the way of cloud cover until early next week. that would be late monday in to tuesday at the earliest. 59 right now in newark. 57 at laguardia. 54 at white plains. you still have temperatures in the mid 40s on eastern long island by montauk. 46 there. 59 at brick, new jersey. a freeze warning in effect areas well north and west of the city. northwestern new jersey. lower hudson valley. interior southwestern connecticut. if you have any sensitive plants, vegetation outdoors, flowers, they've decided to pot outdoors, might want to bring them in tonight or at least cover them up. you see the clouds still hanging

it will be fun to say. the marlins got to steven matz. he lost his first ever big league regular season game. he went 4-0 before the playoffs. didn't give up more than three runs in any start until last night. he went an inning and 2/3rds, mets lost their third straight game all at home, all against division opponents. yankees were off tonight and off last night. they get back at it on the road in toronto. they haven't played since saturday. masahiro tanaka pitches. this is the first of three games against the jays. nhl stanley cup playoffs face off this week. round 1, game 1 at florida. practice today on long island. the isles reached the playoffs for the third time in four years. had a nice first season in brooklyn. injuries down the stretch but travis hamonic should be ready to roll thursday. both teams finished in the top five in points, top seven in goals, top six in goals. could be a real good series.
