wait till you see their pa tragic news tonight in the bronx. two toddlers, one in critical condition moments ago, dying. victims of a fast moving fire in an apartment building. a tragic night tonight at 11:00. i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm shirleen allicot in for sade baderinwa. 10 people were hurt including three firefighters, but those two children passing away. it started tonight in the clearmont section. >> carolina leid on the scene with the latest on those little kids who have died. carolina. >> we just confirmed that information about 30 seconds ago that the two children died. they were taken to the hospital in critical condition but we just learned that they died from their injuries. as you can see right now, there are police officers and fire investigators inside their

information they need to figure out what exactly went wrong. >> i got a couple kicks at the door, after that, i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: devon jackson and his friend could hear people, some young children begging to be rescued from the blaze. the third floor of 1368 webster avenue was so dark they couldn't see and couldn't breathe. >> i went upstairs to go see if there was anybody in the hallway or anybody who needed help. we heard kids crying but it was so black, we couldn't breathe. >> reporter: firefighters rescued two young children around 6:30 wednesday evening. their injuries, critical. eight adults were also taken to nearby hospitals from the butler houses. many given oxygen as they were wheeled away on stretchers. >> as soon as the apartment doors open, the firefighters saw

>> reporter: this is how coffee asiad chased down one of the men he says tried to rob him. dramatic video, considering the man who got hit then punched suffered only minor injuries. >> if i was asleep i'd be dead by now. >> reporter: in the darkened parking lot, three men wielding hammers approached the van as asiad sat inside. one demanded money. >> i turned around to see what happens, the minute i turn my head, the spanish guy shatters my driver's side window. >> reporter: he started his van, at first trying to get away, but he hit two suspectess against this wall. then he saw the third suspect running off in that direction and that's when the surveillance video picks up. he drove at him and hit him, slapping him against the wall. then he got out and starting kicking the suspect who was still down on the ground. >> you coming at me with a

cause somebody serious harm. >> reporter: later the suspect got up, but not for very long, as asiad knocked him down with a single punch. soon another suspect was on the ground. asiad punches one, kicks the other, and eventually made both men take their pants off so they couldn't run. >> it's the only way i could think of subduing them. >> two young guys, or three, decided to rob somebody and they picked the wrong guy. absolutely. >> reporter: asiad uses his van for work so he's out of a job for a while. did he worry he'd cause more serious injuries by running down the suspect? >> at that point i didn't care. because of what he just tried to do, i didn't care. >> reporter: in paterson, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. nearly 40,000 verizon workers walking off their jobs. tough for customers but workers getting a show of support from the democratic presidential candidates. both bernie sanders and hillary clinton visiting picket lines today in new york city.
