wait till you see their pa tragic news tonight in the bronx. two toddlers, one in critical condition moments ago, dying. victims of a fast moving fire in an apartment building. a tragic night tonight at 11:00. i'm bill ritter. >> and i'm shirleen allicot in for sade baderinwa. 10 people were hurt including three firefighters, but those two children passing away. it started tonight in the clearmont section. >> carolina leid on the scene with the latest on those little kids who have died. carolina. >> we just confirmed that information about 30 seconds ago that the two children died. they were taken to the hospital in critical condition but we just learned that they died from their injuries. as you can see right now, there are police officers and fire investigators inside their

information they need to figure out what exactly went wrong. >> i got a couple kicks at the door, after that, i couldn't breathe. >> reporter: devon jackson and his friend could hear people, some young children begging to be rescued from the blaze. the third floor of 1368 webster avenue was so dark they couldn't see and couldn't breathe. >> i went upstairs to go see if there was anybody in the hallway or anybody who needed help. we heard kids crying but it was so black, we couldn't breathe. >> reporter: firefighters rescued two young children around 6:30 wednesday evening. their injuries, critical. eight adults were also taken to nearby hospitals from the butler houses. many given oxygen as they were wheeled away on stretchers. >> as soon as the apartment doors open, the firefighters saw

heavy smoke condition in the apartment, possibly in the living room area, maybe two couches were on fire. >> reporter: neighbors stared at busted windows and blackened walls, picturing the nightmare the victims suffered as they were trapped inside this building with no way to get out. >> i seen the firemen bringing the kids out and they were burnt all over their body. two kids. >> they were burned? >> yes. burned very bad. very bad. >> hope for the best. hope and pray that they make it. >> obviously heartbreaking for so many neighbors that did their very best to try to help these two children. we have learned from a witness and now from police that the children's mother was across the street at the laundromat while this fire was going on. as i mentioned, fire investigators are still here trying to piece together what exactly happened. carolina leid, channel 7

another raucous donald trump rally, this one in pittsburgh where protesters clashed with supporters. police say there were some minor injuries including to cops. trump will be back in our area tomorrow for a suffolk county republican committee fundraiser. a source tonight confirms to abc news that the state's attorney in florida has decided not to prosecute trump's campaign manager for a brush up with a reporter. john kasich will also start his day tomorrow on long island at a town hall in jericho and tomorrow's daily news front endorsement. the editorial board saying his maturity and pragmatism shine especially in contrast to trump. we're also hearing marco rubio's name again tonight in a live c nn town hall, ted cruz said he's looking at possible running mates and rubio would be

blasio's fundraising and inauguration are at the center of the investigation. a hearing will continue in brooklyn tomorrow to determine if the conviction of peter liang will be tossed out. the hearing began today with a judge cross examining a juror who failed to reveal his father had a criminal record. liang was found guilty of fatally shooting akai gurley back in 2013. his attorneys now want a new trial. >> i think this is a juror who wasn't honest. i think this is a juror who has an anti-police bias, a strong one, and who shouldn't have been on this jury. >> liang was supposed to be sentenced tomorrow. his sentencing now postponed until tuesday. we have new information tonight in a slashing in midtown manhattan. three suspects now in custody. but the victim they say is not cooperating with this investigation. 16-year-old boy slashed on his chest this afternoon, happened

he was taken to bellevue in stable condition. cops now questioning the three suspects. new at 11:00, how did a 200-pound concrete slab end up in a parking lot in queens. imagine you're in charge of trying to find the answer to that. did the chunk break off the vanwick expressway? the concrete was found near the expressway. no damage to the parking lot but officials have closed the area till the slab can be removed. police in long island cracking down on speeding drivers today near the scene of a crash that killed a young mother. for more than four hours today, officers issued 39 summonses to drivers in east islip, most of them for speeding. that's where a car jumped a curb yesterday, killing a 25-year-old, skye brunetti moments after she put her son on his school bus. the driver has not been charged. a prolific armed robber strikes again. a man has held up nine businesses at knifepoint since march 1st.

last night at valley stream. workers at carvel say the suspect was armed with a 6-inch knife. a man who has been missing has been found, his body pulled from the river today. 34-year-old javier horta disappeared while out with friends march 25th. he worked as an assistant at the new york public library. he's also the father of a 3-year-old girl. the medical examiner trying to determine his cause of death. robbers in new jersey picking the wrong die to rip off. the would-be victim refusing to play that role and attacks his would-be robbers. tonight he talks only with eyewitness news about this wild ordeal. >> plus, an aggressive fly-by. that's what this was. caught on camera, two russian jets come dangerously close to a u.s. warship. >> will this warmup continue? meteorologist lee goldberg, you

i'm meteorologist lee goldberg in the weather center. the pattern has turned drier but not warmer. freeze warnings much of hudson valley, connecticut. your wake-up weather, mostly clear. 30s. you'll need the spring jacket out the door at 32. i'll tell you when we hit the 70s, less than three minutes away. now to an eyewitness news exclusive. a man in new jersey turns the tables on three suspects trying to rob him. he takes down two suspects on his own and holds them until police arrive. a third suspect is still on the loose. tonight the victim shares details of the attack and what went through his mind when he decided to hit the gas.

>> reporter: this is how coffee asiad chased down one of the men he says tried to rob him. dramatic video, considering the man who got hit then punched suffered only minor injuries. >> if i was asleep i'd be dead by now. >> reporter: in the darkened parking lot, three men wielding hammers approached the van as asiad sat inside. one demanded money. >> i turned around to see what happens, the minute i turn my head, the spanish guy shatters my driver's side window. >> reporter: he started his van, at first trying to get away, but he hit two suspectess against this wall. then he saw the third suspect running off in that direction and that's when the surveillance video picks up. he drove at him and hit him, slapping him against the wall. then he got out and starting kicking the suspect who was still down on the ground. >> you coming at me with a

cause somebody serious harm. >> reporter: later the suspect got up, but not for very long, as asiad knocked him down with a single punch. soon another suspect was on the ground. asiad punches one, kicks the other, and eventually made both men take their pants off so they couldn't run. >> it's the only way i could think of subduing them. >> two young guys, or three, decided to rob somebody and they picked the wrong guy. absolutely. >> reporter: asiad uses his van for work so he's out of a job for a while. did he worry he'd cause more serious injuries by running down the suspect? >> at that point i didn't care. because of what he just tried to do, i didn't care. >> reporter: in paterson, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. nearly 40,000 verizon workers walking off their jobs. tough for customers but workers getting a show of support from the democratic presidential candidates. both bernie sanders and hillary clinton visiting picket lines today in new york city.

jobs offshore and cut benefits. verizon has hired thousands of nonunion workers to replace those on strike. no official protest tonight from the u.s. government after several russian fighter jets flew dangerously close to a u.s. navy destroyer. video shows russian jets coming within 30 feet of the destroyer in the baltic sea. the attack planes got so close, they caused wakes in the water around the ship. the commander of the uss donald cook says the actions were unsafe and unprofessional. >> cooler heads prevailing. speaking of cooler, that's what we have tonight. >> the question is when do we get warmer? >> gradually over the next couple of days. then a nice spike in temperature by the end of the weekend. a little chill in the air. we go outside where we briefly turned to cloudy skies. good news.

temperatures don't drop off too quickly. our temperature at 47 degrees. south wind now around 9 miles per hour managed to reach 58 degrees. didn't feel that warm because the air is so dry. the normal is 60. i think we get very close to that tomorrow. there are your sunrise and sunset times for your thursday. we gained 3 minutes of daylight. weather headlines. we still have the chance of frost tonight and tomorrow night in the suburbs then over the weekend the nights get a little milder. there's lots of sun with a gradual warmup in to the weekend, and then i think we're in the 70s by sunday. really beautiful spring weekend. long overdue. our numbers are still holding in the upper 30s and mid 40s. over to new city, armonk. those freeze warnings for the interior in to tomorrow morning. we'll start the day at 42 in new york city. there's a cool breeze at times. 30s in the suburbs. need the spring jacket. as the afternoon wears on and we approach 60, probably can hold

walking on the sunnyside of the street. there's the clouds. temporary right now. they'll clear out in a few hours. this high in eastern canada is building over the coast. it's pushing this storm away. it's keeping this storm to the west. we're in great shape for a nice dry stretch, longest dry stretch since early march. that high will start to shift offshore over the weekend and get a warmer flow over the southwest. that's when our temperatures can get in to the 70s. probably by sunday, still mid 60s on saturday. numbers tomorrow morning, out the door prepare for a little chill. in the afternoon hours, temperatures get in the mid and upper 50s. tomorrow night we do the same routine. 30s in many suburbs. lower 30s in the city. tack on a couple more degrees on friday afternoon. lower 60s, maybe middle 60s away from the coast and 50s on the shoreline. tomorrow air quality is good. uv index at a 6. that's climbing. and the pollen count, this is going to be a long stretch for allergy sufferers. the grass pollen will spike with

new tonight, a pair of 1st graders on quite a destructive joyride. the 6-year-olds stole a truck and took it for a three-block spin. one of the boys steered while the other pressed the gas pedals. vehicles, mailboxes were damaged or destroyed, including the truck, it was totaled. the boys were not seriously hurt. fortunately nobody else. a brain implant has helped a paralyzed man regain movement in his hand. 24-year-old ian burkehart became paralyzed over most of his body after a diving accident. he can now swipe a credit card or play video games, but only in a lab in ohio while hooked up to a device that interprets his brain signals to stimulate his muscles. >> now it's something that's so fluid, it's kind of like it was before i had my injury where i

two years in a row up against the penguins in the nhl stanley cup playoffs, all starts tonight. round 1, game 1. penguins came in on a roll. this game turns right here. late 1st period, ranger goaltender henrik lundqvist took mark staal's stick to the face. he was able to stay in the game until this. the penguins flipped the puck over the net and just dumb luck, hornquist scores. lundqvist didn't return after the 1st period. sidney crosby takes advantage, beats him on the breakaway. derek stepan did score twice but penguins win 5-2. game 2 saturday. we wait to see about lundqvist's availability for that. the yankees' first road trip of the season continues in toronto. the yankees hope to keep it up against the jays. they did win last night. that's a good sign. yanks down 3-1. start coming back. mark teixeira knocks out his third home run of the season.

a one-run game. but the jays rough up nova for four runs. troy tulowitzki with an rbi single. goins had three hits, couple runs driven in. yanks lose tonight 7-2. michael pineda slips to 1-1. wild game for the mets and marlins at citifield. logan verrett pitched a solid six innings. wilmer flores, first career game at 1st base. flores smacked his first hit of the season. scored his first run of the game. plawecki drives him in. 2-0. 7th inning. in the 8th inning, yoenis cespedes tries to make the play. he's not going to get the ball. everybody's okay here but gives you an idea how bad they wanted to snap this four-game losing streak. here's the next indication. a five-out save for familia. 2-1 mets win with a nine-game road trip up next. now basketball. the end of the season for the nets, already 60 losses. trying to avoid yet another loss with the raptors visiting brooklyn. it's been a rough season.
