good afternoon, i'm david navarro. and i'm lori stokes. we want to start with the tragedy in the bronx, two children killed in a fire. we have new video now, the mother whose children died was across the street, at the time, at the laundromat and realized what was actually happening when fire trucks pulled up. today we learned incense may be to blame for the fire. >> darla miles is live at the clairmont section with the details. darla? >> reporter: we have learned incense is the cause of this fire and we have video of the mother in the laundromat while her two children were inside of a third floor apartment when this fire started. at this point she has not been charged with a crime. >> it is so sad. they are babies and they can't help themselves and it is like thinking that they was tortured, like burned to death. you hear them crying. no one couldn't get in the house. >> reporter: the 26-year-old mother returns to butler houses thursday morning, hard to walk,

it is the same place where her two little girls died, where candles are burning for their a 2-year-old and an 18-month- old. >> so many other kids that live there and other adults. i don't understand why no one was there. >> reporter: the young mother thought someone else was in the apartment she shares with another family while she spent 45 palestinians in the laundromat across the street. she is seen in this surveillance video obtained by eyewitness news, attending to home. >> i'm thinking it was my house. it was crazy. and still, while all this is going on, she is still in the laundromat. she didn't come across the street yet. >> reporter: the grieving mother came home in the same purple coat she was wearing at the laundromat, the wash and the baby's clothing sadly still

the fire started around 6:30 wednesday evening by incense that was left unattend. >> i mentioned to her about the incense burning because the smell is very strong. but she said that is her religion so i left it at that. >> reporter: this is a live look at the third floor apartment where the fire morning. again investigators believe it was started by incense that was burning unattended. there has been a question as to whether or not there was a apartment. today the fire department is here, passing out smoke detectors and information to make sure residents know that they immediate to have one in case something like this happens. live in the clairmont section of the bronx darla miles channel 7 eyewitness news? the ram town supervisor is in court at this hour. christopher st. lawrence inflated the town's value to get $25 million in municipal

the national action network. thousands showed up last night to his rally in washington square park. hundreds showed up for hillary clinton in the bronx last night but in a few hours, they will be face-to-face. dray? >> reporter: good afternoon dave. the stage is set and there are great expectations for a spirited and lively debate between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. this will be the first time the two will face off since bernie sanders made that bold and earlier claim that clinton was unqualified to be president. tonight's debate between hillary clinton and bernie sanders is a lie stakes one. a recent poll shows clinton with only a 10 point lead over voters. sanders cut the lead in half from a month ago. a bad debate from either side could be very damaging.

sanders was born in brooklyn, clinton was a two term representing new york. she maintains her campaign headquarters in brooklyn and lives just outside the city. and choosing debate in brooklyn was also strategic, because there are close to a million registered democrats in the borough. hillary clinton has no scheduled campaign appearances today. bernie sanders, we understand has just arrived in midtown to make an appearance at the national action network annual convention. from there he will be preparing for tonight's debate which, by the way, will begin at 9:00 dray clark eyewitness news. all the republican candidates will be in new york today, john kasich and donald trump. governor kasich is hosting a town hall and trump will be attending a fundraiser. this evening the two candidates along with ted cruz, will attend a new york state

new at noon, rutgers university has announced that president obama will speak at the school's main commencement ceremony next month. the university is celebrating its 250th anniversary this year. president obama will address more than 12,000 graduate students and 40,000 guests on the new brunswick campus. and a mess in a new jersey neighborhood as a dump truck slams into a utility pole, knocking out electricity. after hitting the pole, the truck jumped the sidewalk, came to a rest in the grass. repairs will take up to 10 hours, no word about injuries or what led up to the crash. new at noon, the family of a man killed by an nypd officer wants to know when they will see justice. this morning khai gurley's family held a rally. they were angry the judge in the case delayed sentencing for officer peter le yang.

>> the system is trying to make it a race issue. it is not a race issue. it is a human issue. a life was taken. an innocent life was taken. >> reporter: le yang is facing up to 15 years in prison. as for vargas he says his biological father did not raise him so he does not consider him close. as for a bias against cops vargas says he is entitled to his own opinions. le yang is set to be sent tensed on tuesday. stephen thank you. and happening right now, workers are rallying in manhattan to fight for a $15 minimum wage. workers are expected to join them. they plan to march to the new york state republican gala, where the gop presidential candidates will last week governor cuomo signed a bill into law that will raise the minimum wage in new york to $15 an hour.

saved his life and he is expected to fully recover. constable al qaedaen chop was shot four times in the back while talking to another constable. the other constable fired back at the shooter as he ran off. clapton was rushed to surgery and after several hours got the thumbs up from doctors. >> four of the bullets are lodged in his body and they found one on the ground ask one in the car. deputy chopton is out of surgery, doing well. >> a motive not known yet and the officers did not get a good look at the shooter. a man is being questioned however, but no arrests have been made. a new sign that some of his nigerian girls kidnapped by boca harm are alife. in it one of the 15 girls says quote we are well.

caught on camera what started as a little leak turned into a major problem. officials at a mississippi school say they heard a little pop and water started gushing through the roof. you can see it started a virtual tidal wave in the hallways. sent the clean up crew running everywhere. the flooding caused considerable damage but fortunately, no one was hurt. this is the result of recent major rains in the south. the school is working around the flood zone and classes are not canceled. two lovers were caught making out so passionately in a bar they didn't even notice the place was being robbed. the love birds were sitting at the bar in billings, montana when a masked man walked in and demanded money. a few seconds later one of the kissing birds looks up and finally realizes what is going on. and cameras from a deep

our top stories this afternoon. a fire in the bronx that killed two toddlers was accidental. fire officials say that fire was sparked by burning incense. no operational smoke alarms were found inside the apartment. interviewing the children's 26- year-old mother, she is believed to have been across the street at a laundromat when the fire started. hillary clinton and bernie sanders bracing for a battle in brock lynn. later tonight the democratic -- brooklyn, later tonight the democratic candidates face off at the brooklyn navy yard. hello again i'm david navarro. >> and i'm lori stokes. we are going to start this half hour with the arrest of a town supervisor. this morning the fbi arrested christopher st. lawrence. >> he is the supervisor for the

to a new minor league baseball stadium. marcus has details. marcus? >> reporter: dave and lori, christopher st. lawrence will appear in federal court this afternoon. this was a complex scheme, which involved hiding public funds used to pay for that baseball stadium, also involved lying about the finances in order to sell $150 million worth of bonds. christopher st. lawrence was arrested this morning. besides being the town supervisor, he is the head of the local development corporation, and the feds say he essentially cooked the books in order to secure bonds to pay for pet projects, and claiming his budget was in the black when it was really in the red. but the heart of this, a $58 million minor league baseball stadium that st. lawrence was a huge proponent of even though voters rejected bonds to pay for construction of providence

part of the bands paid for the building of a commons a 132- unit condo complex. also arrested the former assistant town attorney. the u.s. attorney saying the alleged fraud has hurt a town that was already hurting. >> the town will have to assume more debt, has had to raise taxes to pay for that added debt, will face higher costs of funding in the market and is forced to operate a stadium that is losing money. thereby creating a vicious cycle of hardship imposed on the town and its citizens by the defendant's alleged securities fraud. >> reporter: now the u.s. attorney, the fbi, rather raided town hall in 2013 and the u.s. attorney says 10 days later st. lawrence allegedly, again, lied about some incoming fema money in order to make it

now no custody and facing charges. josh loud ran punched his girlfriend in the head and the 38-year-old woman is seriously injured. ringo starr canceled his show to protest north carolina's new transgender law. he was sorry to disappoint fans but he said he needed to take a stand against what he calls hatred and to spread peace and love. a father, convicted of kidnapping his own son, going to prison despite the plea from the son. yesterday a judge in ohio sentenced 53-year-old bobby hernandez to four years in prison. hernandez pleaded guilty lasted month. he admitted taking his then 5- year-old son julian from his mother in alabama to cleveland, where he created fake identities. julian, now 18, asked the judge not to send his father to prison. >> everyone wants to talk about

lot of good. >> julian was stumbling over his father's deception while applying for college last fall when his social security number kept coming up as invalid. he says he forgives his father. a nun is fighting drunk driving charges in new jersey by claiming he was under the -- she was under the influence of ambien and not alcohol. sister kimberly miller was pulled over last november for driving erratically. officers say her eyes were blood slot and she was unsteady on her feet and a half empty bottle of wine was in her car. detectives discovered sister miller's car smashed into a scene. sister miller said she was shaken by her arrest. >> i was upset, i was in my habit in handcuffs. i'm a nun.

we are back now with a former miss america in trouble with the law. police say the winner from 1989 swindled a department store out of thousands of dollars. abc's lindsey davis has the story. >> reporter: she is a beauty queen turned potential convict. >> mrs. america. >> reporter: the former mrs. america, jennifer susan klein, seen here competing for mrs. world, could serve up to 10 years in prison after allegedly making more than $5000 worth of fraudulent returns. minnesota police say the self- proclaimed beauty and style expert who regularly posts social media photos promoting products spent thousands of dollars on designer clothes at macy's back in november. then about a week later, went to two different macy's locations to return the clothes, and collected a $5500 refund. the problem? a store employee says klein
