navy yard, david novarro, e -- dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. from the brooklyn navy yard with the democrats to manhattan where the republican candidates gathered for a gala tonight. protesters greeting the candidates outside, some managing their way inside and got arrested. as eyewitness news reporter josh einiger tweeted out, josh is in midtown with that part of our coverage. >> they've stacked up all these barricades at 42nd. the things have quieted down on the sidewalk. but it was a much different scene a couple hours ago. what this event lacked in fireworks, they sure existed out here on the sidewalk. by our count, more than a dozen arrests tonight. >> reporter: from the streets of the theater district to grand central terminal, to the lobby of the grand hyatt, site of tonight's gop gala, anti-trump protesters were arrested with pride. this hotel happens to be trump's

people are waking up. >> reporter: maybe it was the bowties and polite conversation, but there were no real attacks from any candidate against any other tonight. the fireworks reserved for outside, and the angry crowd. >> you've got trump who's horrible and cruz who is terrible and kasich who is merely awful. >> tonight the new york post has come out in favor of donald trump, calling him imperfect and amateur-ish at times, but at the same time saying he's an imperfect messenger carrying a vital message reflecting what the post refers to as the best of new york values. trump, kasich, and cruz will be leaving the city tomorrow heading to points upstate as they stump for votes with the new york primary, just next week. we are live in midtown tonight, josh einiger, eyewitness news. counting down to primary day on tuesday, channel 7 is your source for everything you need to know.

for updates with the candidates an now some breaking news in new jersey right now. firefighters on the scene of a large fire. this is in jersey city. started in a vacant house and spread to four other nearby homes. three of the homes were vacant. that's the good news. at this point no word on injuries or what sparked this fire. fire now under control. 10 people have been displaced. we have new details in a horrific crash involving an army humvee on the new jersey turnpike. the vehicle with four soldiers inside flipping over. all of them inside in serious condition. jim dolan at the hospital in new brunswick. >> witnesses say the front right wheel of the vehicle just went flying off at 60, 65 miles per hour on the turnpike, and that 7,000-pound humvee flipped over, landing essentially on top of the four soldiers trapped inside.

right wheel came flying off the army reserve humvee, the driver lost control. it flipped over right there in the southbound lanes of the turnpike, trapping all four soldiers inside and instantly severing the leg of one female soldier. in eyewitness still photos, you can see one soldier's legs dangling from the wreckage but he couldn't get out. >> we're going to need some fire apparatus. emts are coming northbound. they're going to be standing by. >> a military humvee, and there were three soldiers trapped. >> it looked real bad but i didn't see any major injuries. there was blood in the truck. >> reporter: soldiers left for queens and headed south on the turnpike. the humvee was traveling with another vehicle and reservists from that truck tried to help before medics arrived. traffic was stopped for the rescue and backed up the

soldiers were taken away by medevac choppers. >> the humvee has been used by the armory since way back in 1989. it was first used in panama. it's scheduled to be replaced by something called the joint light combat tactical vehicle but there will be humvees in circulation in the army, in use in the army for many years to come. reporting live, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly jersey. it happened on the northbound afternoon. the identity of the biker who died has not been released. a refrigerator was seen on the ground near the crash site. but it's unclear if it was involved in the accident. all northbound lanes were shut down. tonight. meanwhile the highway to the lincoln tunnel is back open

a man stealing packages from people's door steps in crown heights, brooklyn. watch as he slaps open a garbage bag and stuffs several boxes inside. but it's too much to carry, so he steals a cart to lug the load. >> he's done it before. it's not new. >> reporter: tamicka linton-jones is one of many victims. she assumed her package was lost in the mail, not stolen. >> it was a video for the kids. i ordered it a couple days ago. there was a delay. i thought it was the post office. i didn't think anybody would be stealing from the building. >> reporter: the neighborhood patrol pieced this all together. the first quality paper goods store was robbed at the corner of kingston and crown tuesday afternoon. the owner e-mailed a photo to the group about 20 minutes later. a volunteer spotted the man they believe got away and followed him home. >> we saw him shuffling in to an apartment. and he left all the packages out in the lobby. >> reporter: police arrived and
