beginning with dave evans at the democratic debate in brooklyn. >> i think this debate and tuesday night's vote, they're so important. of nine last primaries, bernie sanders has won eight of them. if he's able to pull off an upset in hillary clinton's adoptive home state, that could possibly change everything. >> if you're both screaming at each other, the viewers won't be able to hear either of you. >> reporter: this feisty debate was interesting from the get-go. bernie sanders hit first. questioning not hillary clinton's qualifications, but her judgment. >> but i do question her judgment. i question her judgment which voted for the war in iraq, the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of this country. >> reporter: clinton has spent the last 10 days blasting sanders for questioning her qualifications. >> i've been called a lot of things in my life. that was a first. >> reporter: clinton went on to rip sanders, saying by questioning her judgment, he

have a couple quick stops in the city, then to a day of fundraising in california. bernie sanders will spend the next couple of days actually out of the country as an invited guest at the vatican. reporting live now in brooklyn navy yard, david novarro, e -- dave evans, channel 7 eyewitness news. from the brooklyn navy yard with the democrats to manhattan where the republican candidates gathered for a gala tonight. protesters greeting the candidates outside, some managing their way inside and got arrested. as eyewitness news reporter josh einiger tweeted out, josh is in midtown with that part of our coverage. >> they've stacked up all these barricades at 42nd. the things have quieted down on the sidewalk. but it was a much different scene a couple hours ago. what this event lacked in fireworks, they sure existed out here on the sidewalk. by our count, more than a dozen arrests tonight.

of the theater district to grand central terminal, to the lobby of the grand hyatt, site of tonight's gop gala, anti-trump protesters were arrested with pride. this hotel happens to be trump's first development from back in 1980. >> who the hell wants to talk about politics all the time, right? >> reporter: tonight he spent a long time reciting his resume before a hometown crowd, reminiscing about deals he's made. he didn't directly attack either of his primary rivals. instead, one of his sharpest jabs at mayor de blasio. >> it's an amazing city. we have to be careful. our mayor has to be careful because he can blow it very quickly if he keeps going the way he's going, not doing good. we better be careful, mr. mayor. >> reporter: in next week's new york primary he's way ahead of his next rival, john kasich of ohio, who today scored an endorsement from governor george pataki.

week. we are live in midtown tonight, josh einiger, eyewitness news. counting down to primary day on tuesday, channel 7 is your source for everything you need to know. stay with us on tv and online for updates with the candidates an now some breaking news in new jersey right now. firefighters on the scene of a large fire. this is in jersey city. started in a vacant house and spread to four other nearby homes. three of the homes were vacant. that's the good news. at this point no word on injuries or what sparked this fire. fire now under control. 10 people have been displaced. we have new details in a horrific crash involving an army humvee on the new jersey turnpike. the vehicle with four soldiers inside flipping over. all of them inside in serious condition. jim dolan at the hospital in new brunswick. >> witnesses say the front right

flying off at 60, 65 miles per hour on the turnpike, and that 7,000-pound humvee flipped over, landing essentially on top of the four soldiers trapped inside. >> reporter: when the front right wheel came flying off the army reserve humvee, the driver lost control. it flipped over right there in the southbound lanes of the turnpike, trapping all four soldiers inside and instantly severing the leg of one female soldier. in eyewitness still photos, you can see one soldier's legs dangling from the wreckage but he couldn't get out. >> we're going to need some fire apparatus. emts are coming northbound. they're going to be standing by. >> a military humvee, and there were three soldiers trapped. >> it looked real bad but i didn't see any major injuries. there was blood in the truck.

queens and headed south on the turnpike. the humvee was traveling with another vehicle and reservists from that truck tried to help before medics arrived. traffic was stopped for the rescue and backed up the turnpike for miles as two of the soldiers were taken away by medevac choppers. >> the humvee has been used by 1989. it was first used in panama. it's scheduled to be replaced by something called the joint light combat tactical vehicle but there will be humvees in circulation in the army, in use in the army for many years to come. reporting live, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a deadly motorcycle accident in new jersey. it happened on the northbound side of route 21 in clifton this afternoon. the identity of the biker who died has not been released. a refrigerator was seen on the

but it's unclear if it was involved in the accident. all northbound lanes were shut down. the road is back open though tonight. meanwhile the highway to the lincoln tunnel is back open tonight after this wild scene. newscopter7 was over a car completely engulfed in flames on route 495 eastbound in union city. new jersey transit says the car had rear ended one of its buses which had no passengers on it. three people in the car were hurt. crews in new jersey tonight working late in to the night to restore power or at least try to to several buildings in downtown newark. pse&g says the power outage sparked by a manhole fire earlier today. rutgers, newark were forced to cancel some classes. pse&g claims the problem should be fixed by tomorrow morning. a serial armed robber strikes again, targeting more businesses on long island. nassau county police are searching for a man who's held up 10 businesses at knifepoint

last night he targeted a dunkin' donuts in hewlett. there will be no retrial for peter liang, the former cop convicted of manslaughter. a judge in brooklyn this afternoon upholding liang's conviction after defense attorneys claimed juror misconduct. liang faces up to 15 years in prison but might also get probation. the fdny says burning incense is what sparked a fire that killed two toddlers in the bronx. the siblings, just 2 and a half and 18 months old were left alone in the apartment when the flames went up yesterday. new surveillance video shows the girl's mother across the street at a laundromat. police say she thought someone was watching her children. so far she has not been charged. new at 11:00, next at 11:00, packages stolen right in front of people's doors. it's caught on camera. wait till you hear where the loot was found.

people's door steps in crown heights, brooklyn. watch as he slaps open a garbage bag and stuffs several boxes inside. but it's too much to carry, so he steals a cart to lug the load. >> he's done it before. it's not new. >> reporter: tamicka linton-jones is one of many victims. she assumed her package was lost in the mail, not stolen. >> it was a video for the kids. i ordered it a couple days ago. there was a delay. i thought it was the post office. i didn't think anybody would be stealing from the building. >> reporter: the neighborhood patrol pieced this all together. the first quality paper goods store was robbed at the corner of kingston and crown tuesday afternoon. the owner e-mailed a photo to the group about 20 minutes later. a volunteer spotted the man they believe got away and followed him home. >> we saw him shuffling in to an apartment. and he left all the packages out in the lobby. >> reporter: police arrived and recovered those packages which

but officers did not make an arrest. residents believe the same man is responsible for the rash of missing packages in the area and are using this criminal shopping spree as a lesson learned. >> your packages aren't safe here. and i think people are feeling the squeeze and some people are resorting to the easy pickings. >> reporter: some say they'll use a po box or make sure someone is home when deliveries arrive. in crown heights, brooklyn, carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. a nanny charged in the brutal stabbing deaths of two children on the upper west side rejecting a plea deal. yoselyn ortega was offered 15 years in prison for each of the two murders which would run consecutively. prosecutors are asking for life without parole for ortega. she's accused of killing a 6-year-old and her 2-year-old brother in 2012. at least nine people confirmed dead tonight in japan,

6.5 magnitude quake rattling southern japan. dozens of homes and buildings collapsed. roads buckled. hardest hit time, the island of kyushu. they're searching for trapped residents. just frightening. cell phone video capturing one of the after shocks from the quake. a serious of aftershocks already in japan. there will be likely more in the coming week. fortunately no tsunami risk. new at 11:00, a scary ordeal for rock guitarist dave navarro several stories. navarro sharing this photo of the ordeal on instagram. he was stuck in the elevator for more than an hour while on his way to do a radio interview. he says it felt like the elevator plunged about 10 stories before it got stuck. firefighters arrived and rescued them.

staff shortages for the longer security lines at airports across the country. the problem, a record number of travelers and additional security measures but no tsa officers added to cope with all that. passengers are angry as well as airports and airlines. they're ticked too. american airlines says nearly 6800 passengers missed flights in one week at five airports it serves because of these long lines. going to get worse they say. lee goldberg joining us. a little chilly out there right now. >> that's the thing. a tease in the afternoon, feels great, then you need the coat. it's classic spring weather going forward. as we go through time, get rid of some of the chill at night. today was day 2 of at least a six-day dry stretch. the empire state building in blue, white, orange in honor of the 50th anniversary new york city landmarks law. 66 for humidity. the air has really been super dry. the barometer on the rise.

almost right on target. now we're going to go above normal which we will for the upcoming weekend. we gain two minutes of daylight on a beautiful sunny friday coming up which has a chilly start. frosty in a few suburbs. then in the afternoon we'll tack on a couple more degrees, probably in the low to mid 60s tomorrow afternoon. spectacular spring weekend. 70 in reach by sunday. warmer on monday. only shot at a shower comes early tuesday and that's not a guarantee. frost advisories interior new jersey. also orange and putnam county. hudson valley and fairfield county. places like high bridge and somerville will start dropping in to the 30s after midnight. 40 degrees in islip. 43 in belmar. sunshine across the board tomorrow, easy forecast. 62 at 4:00. and in to the upper 50s during nice. this is a satellite and radar. no clouds there. dominant weather feature, this high pressure over eastern east coast. there is a low offshore right here. and it's making for some gusty

maybe a few patchy clouds. otherwise, we really have a shield that's fending off any storms from the south and from the west. that's the good news. the flipside is remember, getting our wind flow from the north and east for the most part, so cooler air is coming in. our warmup is very gradual. eventually these winds will turn around and we'll get access to some of the 70s over the middle of the country and ohio valley. but that's not till late in the weekend and in to monday as well. so for the time being, just have to monitor this storm offshore for a little extra breeze along the coast. maybe a couple patchy clouds. otherwise mild, beautiful, high and dry as we go in to the upcoming weekend. remember a chill in the morning. temperatures get in the low and middle 60s but only 50s along the coast. chill and 30s. 44 in the city. couple degrees milder tomorrow afternoon. sunny. very pleasant. 50s at the coast. then tomorrow night, 44 degrees. so just a touch milder but we're still seeing 30s in many suburbs

in tonight's health alert, a warning about some acid reflux medications. a study has linked long-term use of pump inhibitors to chronic kidney disease. the risk of 28% higher than those taking other types. one large theater chain is thinking about testing out smart phone-friendly auditoriums. the head of amc tells variety that asking a 22-year-old to turn off their phone is like asking them to cut off their arm at the elbow. but he says text-friendly auditoriums will be pursued if there's a way to insure all guests enjoy the movie.
