>> and i'm liz cho. the polls open in 12 hours from now. the stakes are huge for the parties. >> how huge? 291 democratic delegates are at stake in new york. 95 republican delegates are at stake, could prove pivotal in whether the leading candidates nomination. the candidates going where their party's voters are. >> hillary clinton's stops included a rally in midtown by women for hillary. bernie sanders was also in midtown, meeting with striking verizon workers. tonight he'll attend a concert and rally in long island. >> donald trump meeting with members of the national diversity coalition for trump. today he attends a rally in buffalo. ted cruz now in maryland. as for john kasich, also in maryland, after making stops in upstate new york including syracuse. we have two reports tonight. sandra bookman is in midtown

begin with josh einiger where sanders is holding his last big new york event. >> good evening. it's one of the most breathtaking views in the whole city and tonight it will be the backdrop for bernie sanders in the next hour or two in a sunset rally. his last major rally before the polls open and the workers finally have their say. >> reporter: in the shadow of glossy high rises that signal the white hot real estate market, bernie sanders has chosen this spot for his closing arguments for new yorkers. for those waiting in the heat, it's a message long overdue. >> i think it's in a perfect spot because it speaks in the dichotomy of really rich and really poor. >> people who can barely afford to live in this city are giving their hard earned money to his campaign. that speaks to the kind of politician he is. >> reporter: sanders spent this last day before the primary,

with striking verizon workers and visited the twin parks. >> we're here in ground zero. i thank the councilmen and the assemblymen for taking us here. this is the stuff we as a nation have got to work on. >> reporter: hillary clinton had a busy day too, crisscrossing the city as well. she touted the city's diversity, making her final plea to women's groups and gun control groups. >> i never count any chickens before they hatch. we'll see when the polls close. >> reporter: new york is a closed primary, meaning independents can't vote. that could hurt him tomorrow and

clinton's baked in support in her home state. >> back here, this event set to begin around 7:00. it features a variety of celebrities including the actor danny glover. sanders for his part hasicides more than two dozen times he intends to win the state of new york but when the votes come in tomorrow, he'll be in pennsylvania. live in long island city, queens tonight, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. now to the republicans. an attempt tonight by donald trump's campaign to show in this most diverse city of new york that his support comes from more than white people. today at trump tower, a diverse group trying to make the case. did it work? eyewitness news reporter sandra bookman with that part of the coverage in midtown manhattan. >> those folks came from all across the country. you said it. the national diversity coalition for trump. they came here they say to make the point that they are fully in

for america's future. >> thank you, everybody. >> reporter: donald trump today surrounded by religious and ethnic leaders from across the country who showed up at trump tower to give him their stamp of approval. >> we want him to be the next president of the united states. we feel as though not only can and will he make america great again, but we believe he's best for the minority community. >> reporter: the national diversity coalition for trump wants to change the perception that the republican frontrunner's stance on issues like immigration means he has limited appeal to many minority voters, but it's trump's business savvy that's a bigger attraction for many of the coalition members who see him as their best chance to get their share of the american dream. >> we're going to make great trade deals. we're going to have strong borders but people can come in to our country, but they're going to come in legally, and that's what everybody wants. >> we see that he's tough.

and we need a president that will be strong. >> reporter: the next test of trump's political strength, tomorrow's primary here. >> i think we're going to have a big day tomorrow and it's very exciting. i'm looking forward to it. >> of course mr. trump fully expects to come out on top by the end of the primary tomorrow night but he also knows he needs to do well not only here in new york city but across the state if he wants to get much closer to that 1237 delegates he needs to clinch the republican nomination. we're live tonight in midtown, sandra bookman, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> big night for everyone. and a reminder, world news with david muir will have much more on tomorrow's prime including more of the interview with donald trump. if he gets more than 50% in each district he has a chance to get the nomination on the first ballot in cleveland. >> with trump on top of the recent polls, ted cruz is headed to maryland.

cruz says that maryland is a the national election. >> the nation is looking to maryland to decide do we nominate donald trump and hand the election to hillary clinton? or do we unite behind the cruz campaign and beat hillary clinton? >> meanwhile, john kasich is spending some time in new york state tonight. a town hall is about to begin in schenectady. kasich said americans deserve more from our political leaders. >> at the end of the day america has to lead and we can complain all we want about people not doing everything they should. that's kind of what happens with leaders. and we should always demand more, but the world depends on us. >> this was kasich's second event in the syracuse area. the presidential primary is not the only elections in new york state happening tomorrow. there will be two notable special elections. both will fill the seats of two

convicted of corruption. voters will elect to replace republican. and sheldon silver, a democrat. both men were ousted after federal corruption scandals. 6 a.m. they close at 9 p.m. we invite you to stay with eyewitness news, abc7ny for updates and results and reaction throughout tomorrow night. now the other news of the night. we're following breaking news. it affects the commute home. service on the morris and essex line has resumed but there are one-hour delays. new jersey transit train hit a person on the traction near the south orange station. about 100 people were onboard. no one on the train was hurt but there are about one-hour delays this evening. we're going to turn to the widening federal investigation in to corruption. at the nypd, an investigation that includes two of mayor de blasio's contributors. there's action tonight against three more police officials

as federal prosecutors reveal what officers are allegedly doing for people who are allegedly paying them. eyewitness news reporter n.j. burkett is in lower manhattan with the story. >> it begins with a man arrested for bribery. federal prosecutors called that man an arms dealer for the community. he was arraigned and has just been released. i want to show you the scene outside federal court just a few minutes ago. he's a 44-year-old man from pomona, new york. his name is shaya lichtenstein. charged with bribing to get pistol permits for up to 150 people which of course are difficult, if not impossible in this city to get. >> reporter: prosecutors say it started when he contacted internal affairs.

on bribery charges. sergeant michael villanueva. it's all part of the u.s. justice department's investigation in to police corruption in south brooklyn where officers are suspected of providing favors and other considerations to local businessmen in exchange for gifts, trips, and cash. five nypd commanders have already been transferred and that has put others on the radar. lichtenstein is accused of paying thousands of dollars to expedite the permits which are impossible to get. one man known as license holder one had four automobile accidents, 10 moving violations, an arrest for perjury, and four domestic violence complaints, one in which he was accused of threatening to kill someone. end quote.

court, lichtenstein has been released on half a million dollars bail. he's married with three children and had no criminal history till now. it's the first arrest in this widening investigation, but based on the court papers i've read tonight, it's not likely to be the last. live tonight in federal court in downtown lower manhattan, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> quite a story. a brave deli owner back at work today despite being shot twice during a violent robbery last night in brooklyn. saeed was behind the register at his store in east new york, staring down the barrel of a gun. one of the suspects came to grab the cash, saeed grabbed the gun. he was shot but able to chase one of the suspects. a $2500 reward being offered to help catch the two robbers. a woman is recovering tonight after she was hit in the head by falling trucks debris in midtown manhattan. newscopter7 was over the scene this afternoon.

the death toll tonight rising to 350 in that devastating weekend earthquake in ecuador. the 7.8 magnitude quake flattening an area popular with tourists along the country's pacific coast. rescue workers from several countries now trying to help find survivors. among the dead, a man who used to live in patchogue in long island and his wife. here's long island reporter kristin thorne. >> it's unbelievable. unbelievable that's happened to my family. >> reporter: sergio says his cousin anibal was working on building a house in ecuador saturday night when the ground below him cracked and split open. >> opened up and he's sinking in the hole. >> reporter: he and his wife hung to the ground.

when a wall fell on top of them and killed them. >> reporter: they're among the more than 350 people killed in the 7.8 magnitude quake. the family can't believe the pictures they're seeing of the destruction. >> we're having difficulty even calling because the internet is up and down and up and down. >> so far away, you can do nothing, just sit and watch. >> reporter: the family decided they wanted to help instead. they're arranging to send much needed supplies to ecuador like bandages, food and clothing. >> people are suffering, not just our family. i believe our family is suffering the same as us. and now they need our help. we have a chance to do something, we would do it. >> out of this tragedy we're trying to make something positive in the memory of our cousin. >> if you'd like information about donation drop-off locations, head to our website, abc7ny and look for this story

kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. with mosquito season right around the corner, new york city officials want to make sure residents are protected from the zika virus. mayor de blasio today announced a three-year, five-borough plan to combat the virus. it includes expanded human testing and a care management program for women. the mayor introduced the planned to during a tour of the health department's public health lab. >> the lab is a crucial part of our effort to deal with the zika crisis and to be prepared to stop zika from harming new yorkers. and a lot of the most important work will happen right here in this building. >> meanwhile in washington the pressure is on senate republicans who vote on president obama's request for $1.9 billion in funding to combat zika. it's a 10. that was the weekend. that was today.

truly a 10 today. and all weekend long. >> the whole 7-day has been amazing. we have a sprinkle tomorrow morning, that's about it. outside we go this evening where it's been in the upper 70s to around 80. a little bit of rainfall. there's actually a breeze coming out of the south which is knocking the numbers down. we're going to see a pretty good drop in temperature this evening. you'd be surprised you need the spring jacket. it's going to be a gorgeous evening, just gets a little cool-ish. with 20 degrees above average, there are your records. first 80-degree day since september 29th. sixth straight dry day. this is going to be the longest dry stretch since october as we go all the way to thursday. see how the south wind is coming

we started off the show today, babylon, 77. down to 64. it's a big split across new york city where you have 60s in brooklyn, staten island, and queens and it's in the 70s in the bronx and upper manhattan. still 80 in andover, new jersey. poughkeepsie coming in at 8 a. dry everywhere. with all the dryness and a gusty wind coming back tomorrow, still warm near 70 degrees. there's a fire weather watch for pretty much the entire area tomorrow afternoon and evening. sunshine this evening, 71. light wind overnight. wind picks up tomorrow, early clouds. sprinkle at worst. it's a gusty breeze and cooler tomorrow, only around 70. there are the clouds already trying to spill in. there's a backdoor cold front snaking its way through eastern new england. even snow in eastern canada. we're in the warm side of the front but some of the area coming in for new england will cool us off tomorrow.

around 70 degrees so a cooler breeze tomorrow with at worst a little sprinkle. high pressure is over us on beautiful day. day 8 of the dry stretch. and there's a system that won't get here until later thursday night or friday with a couple looking at a short-term futurecast, here we go to tomorrow morning. clouds around. gusty breeze. 65 to 70. only 59 in monticello. more of a spring feel tomorrow. clear to partly cloudy tomorrow. 56. feels more like 60s, early clouds then partly to mostly sunny. breezy, cooler. a chilly night tomorrow night. back to 40 in many suburbs, 30s in the coldest spots. gorgeous day. increasing clouds on thursday. on friday that's when the dry stretch ends but it's not with much. a little light rain should dry out by late day leaving us with a dry friday night. as we go in to saturday, 68 degrees. a nice spring weekend in the mid and upper 60s. another threat of rain on monday. hopefully we can sneak in more significant rain before the month is out.

i think the boston marathon is going to be an emotional event forever. >> and also gets you ready for spring. brings you to summer. a lot of the top americans skipped today's boston marathon after running in the u.s. olympic trials back in february. so today ethiopia rules in boston. 30,000 runners, four waves, clear, no wind.

finished in the 70-degree temperatures later. zachary finished 10th. the first american women finished 9th. won in two hours, 12 minutes, 45 seconds. for the women it was debesa in 2:29:19. both ethiopians winning. it was an off day in the rangers' nhl stanley cup series. took a cup to the hand blocking a shot. hasn't appeared in the series yet with an upper body injury. it's a best of seven series. rangers earned the split in pittsburgh, brought it home for the next two games. while mcdonagh didn't practice today, he's still officially listed as doubtful for the next game. >> did not expect him to skate with the group today but after discussing with our medical

be a good idea for him to get a practice in and we'll see how he responds. the first ever islanders postseason game in brooklyn and successfully late last night. game three for the isles and panthers. brock nelson's pass to thomas hickey from behind the net was perfectly. isles won 4-3. they lead the series two games to one. game four in brooklyn wednesday. there's no telling how big that place was. the nets have hired kenny atkinson to be the next head coach. the knicks' situation not as clear. there was a report phil jackson offered the job to warriors assistant luke walton. walton won 39 games but today jackson on twitter said no one has been offered and no one has turned down the knick job. espn reports the two sides did speak but the thought was walton would stay with the warriors. giants kicker josh brown hit
