begin with josh einiger where sanders is holding his last big new york event. >> good evening. it's one of the most breathtaking views in the whole city and tonight it will be the backdrop for bernie sanders in the next hour or two in a sunset rally. his last major rally before the polls open and the workers finally have their say. >> reporter: in the shadow of glossy high rises that signal the white hot real estate market, bernie sanders has chosen this spot for his closing arguments for new yorkers. for those waiting in the heat, it's a message long overdue. >> i think it's in a perfect spot because it speaks in the dichotomy of really rich and really poor. >> people who can barely afford to live in this city are giving their hard earned money to his campaign. that speaks to the kind of politician he is. >> reporter: sanders spent this last day before the primary,

as federal prosecutors reveal what officers are allegedly doing for people who are allegedly paying them. eyewitness news reporter n.j. burkett is in lower manhattan with the story. >> it begins with a man arrested for bribery. federal prosecutors called that man an arms dealer for the community. he was arraigned and has just been released. i want to show you the scene outside federal court just a few minutes ago. he's a 44-year-old man from pomona, new york. his name is shaya lichtenstein. charged with bribing to get pistol permits for up to 150 people which of course are difficult, if not impossible in this city to get. >> reporter: prosecutors say it started when he contacted internal affairs.

on bribery charges. sergeant michael villanueva. it's all part of the u.s. justice department's investigation in to police corruption in south brooklyn where officers are suspected of providing favors and other considerations to local businessmen in exchange for gifts, trips, and cash. five nypd commanders have already been transferred and that has put others on the radar. lichtenstein is accused of paying thousands of dollars to expedite the permits which are impossible to get. one man known as license holder one had four automobile accidents, 10 moving violations, an arrest for perjury, and four domestic violence complaints, one in which he was accused of threatening to kill someone. end quote.

court, lichtenstein has been released on half a million dollars bail. he's married with three children and had no criminal history till now. it's the first arrest in this widening investigation, but based on the court papers i've read tonight, it's not likely to be the last. live tonight in federal court in downtown lower manhattan, n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> quite a story. a brave deli owner back at work today despite being shot twice during a violent robbery last night in brooklyn. saeed was behind the register at his store in east new york, staring down the barrel of a gun. one of the suspects came to grab the cash, saeed grabbed the gun. he was shot but able to chase one of the suspects. a $2500 reward being offered to help catch the two robbers. a woman is recovering tonight after she was hit in the head by falling trucks debris in midtown manhattan. newscopter7 was over the scene this afternoon.

the death toll tonight rising to 350 in that devastating weekend earthquake in ecuador. the 7.8 magnitude quake flattening an area popular with tourists along the country's pacific coast. rescue workers from several countries now trying to help find survivors. among the dead, a man who used to live in patchogue in long island and his wife. here's long island reporter kristin thorne. >> it's unbelievable. unbelievable that's happened to my family. >> reporter: sergio says his cousin anibal was working on building a house in ecuador saturday night when the ground below him cracked and split open. >> opened up and he's sinking in the hole. >> reporter: he and his wife hung to the ground.

when a wall fell on top of them and killed them. >> reporter: they're among the more than 350 people killed in the 7.8 magnitude quake. the family can't believe the pictures they're seeing of the destruction. >> we're having difficulty even calling because the internet is up and down and up and down. >> so far away, you can do nothing, just sit and watch. >> reporter: the family decided they wanted to help instead. they're arranging to send much needed supplies to ecuador like bandages, food and clothing. >> people are suffering, not just our family. i believe our family is suffering the same as us. and now they need our help. we have a chance to do something, we would do it. >> out of this tragedy we're trying to make something positive in the memory of our cousin. >> if you'd like information about donation drop-off locations, head to our website, abc7ny and look for this story

kristin thorne, channel 7 eyewitness news. with mosquito season right around the corner, new york city officials want to make sure residents are protected from the zika virus. mayor de blasio today announced a three-year, five-borough plan to combat the virus. it includes expanded human testing and a care management program for women. the mayor introduced the planned to during a tour of the health department's public health lab. >> the lab is a crucial part of our effort to deal with the zika crisis and to be prepared to stop zika from harming new yorkers. and a lot of the most important work will happen right here in this building. >> meanwhile in washington the pressure is on senate republicans who vote on president obama's request for $1.9 billion in funding to combat zika. it's a 10. that was the weekend. that was today.

there are those who say we cannot defeat a corrupt political system and fix a rigged economy. but i believe we need to lift our vision above the obstacles in place and look to the american horizon. to a nation where every child can not only dream of going to college, but attend one. where quality healthcare will be a birthright of every citizen. where a good job is not a wish, but a reality. where women receive equal pay and a living wage is paid to all. an america where after a lifetime of labor, there is time for rest and grandchildren. a nation that defends our people and our values, but no longer carries so much of that burden alone.

we started off the show today, babylon, 77. down to 64. it's a big split across new york city where you have 60s in brooklyn, staten island, and queens and it's in the 70s in the bronx and upper manhattan. still 80 in andover, new jersey. poughkeepsie coming in at 8 a. dry everywhere. with all the dryness and a gusty wind coming back tomorrow, still warm near 70 degrees. there's a fire weather watch for pretty much the entire area tomorrow afternoon and evening. sunshine this evening, 71. light wind overnight. wind picks up tomorrow, early clouds. sprinkle at worst. it's a gusty breeze and cooler tomorrow, only around 70. there are the clouds already trying to spill in. there's a backdoor cold front snaking its way through eastern new england. even snow in eastern canada. we're in the warm side of the front but some of the area coming in for new england will cool us off tomorrow.
