less than seven hours till the polls open for the new york primary. the stakes are enormous for the candidates who want to be president. first, a tragic story. a fire ripping through a home and killing a woman who lives there. good evening at 11:00, i'm bill ritter. >> i'm liz cho. sade is off tonight. that fire tonight destroyed a home and a life and injured eight firefighters. eyewitness news reporter lucy yang is in prospect lefferts garden with the developing details. >> firefighters believe the blaze began somewhere on the second floor of this one family house behind me. it moved so quickly. we're told there was no way to save the poor victim trapped upstairs.

screams for the woman to climb out the window. her son pleaded for her to escape. >> he's like my mom is still in there, my mom is still in there. >> reporter: but it wasn't that easy. >> she's a heavy set woman so she doesn't move that well. >> i don't think she was capable of climbing out of the window. that's the real tragedy here. the house can be replaced but his mother cannot. >> reporter: the two-alarm fire erupted at fenimore street in prospect lefferts. the older woman lived here with her grown son. 100 firefighters valiantly to keep the flames from consuming neighboring homes but no second chance for the victim trapped upstairs. >> was faced with heavy fire condition on the second floor in to the third floor or attic. hour and 40 minutes. >> reporter: the 911 call came in around 6:00 tonight. officials report the first truck arrived within two minutes but the flames had already gotten

>> real thick. flames were pouring out of the top floor of the building. just pouring out. >> we're told the mother was once an active member of the block association. firefighters will be watching this house overnight for any possible hotspots. this as the fire marshals try to determine what started the blaze. live in brooklyn, lucy yang for channel 7 eyewitness news. from brooklyn we go to westchester county. another developing story as we take a live look at yonkers where detectives are investigating a suspicious death inside an apartment. police are releasing few details at this hour. detectives expect to be on the scene throughout the night. new at 11:00, the man who police say sparked a lockdown has been caught tonight. 24-year-old john pierre filcher was picked up.

spotted with a gun last night . the incident forced students to remain indoors for hours while police searched the campus. the final push for the candidates who want to be the next president ahead of new york's primary. we start with the democrats. latest national poll shows hillary clinton and bernie sanders neck and neck, but in new york, clinton is way ahead in the polls. a big win means uber bad news for sanders. maybe that explains why clinton did eight campaign stops today and tonight. eyewitness news reporter josh einiger in long island city, queens, where tonight sanders spoke. in a normal election year by the time they get to new york in the primary season, the candidates barely even have to come here. their nominations. but this is no normal year and tonight each candidate, hillary clinton and bernie sanders were barnstorming the city looking for every last vote. >> the next president of the

>> cruz is just a catastrophe. he didn't even get 50% of his own stake. he was well below 50%. and he doesn't represent what we need. >> reporter: trump stuck to his familiar themes. he talked about building a border wall, complained about unfair treatment by the gop, and the voting system had been rigged. meanwhile, staff turmoil within his campaign continues. the latest change, trump's campaign field director abruptly designed tonight. trump did make one cringe inducing gaff referring to the 9/11 attacks as 7-eleven. meanwhile, john kasich structured for last minute votes in schenectady. kasich, who remains far behind in the delegate race, is hoping for a strong second place finish in new york tomorrow. he continues to court would-be delegates just in case there's an open national convention. ted cruz is polling behind kasich in new york spent the day

cruz has had trouble making any traction here in new york, especially after he made those snarky remarks about, quote, new york values. meanwhile, there is some worry tonight among new york election officials especially here in the city that some new yorkers will try to vote tomorrow only to be told they're not registered. the rules are strict ask unforgiving. only registered republicans and registered democrats can vote tomorrow. there are 3.2 million new yorkers with no affiliation, that's greater than the number of registered republicans. the deadline to register with a party, six months ago, october 9th. first time voters had to register with a party last month, march 25th. today a lawsuit filed in long island on behalf of voters who missed the deadline in october mptz >> a third of the people that are registered to vote are what's called blank, which means they're not registered with either party, so a third of the registered voters are essentially in new york disenfranchised at this moment because we have a closed primary. >> they'll be back in court

to drop in the growing nypd corruption scandal. >> reporter: alex lichtenstein left federal court today after posting half a million dollars bond and did not say a word about the bribery charges against him. >> no comment. >> reporter: a week ago lichtenstein was recorded by a hidden microphone appearing to offer a police officer up to $6,000 for every gun carry permit the officer helped him obtain. lichtenstein represented several wealthy businessmen in an orthodox community in south brooklyn. lichtenstein is heard at one point saying i'm not bribing you and the police officer replies, i'm not an -- and here used an expletive. of course you're bribing me. let's be frank and honest here. lichtenstein didn't respond to that. >> no justice, no peace. no corrupt police. >> reporter: today at police headquarters a small group of activists protested the scandal that's ensnared people in the nypd as high up as commander. five commanders have been

on the tape lichtenstein brags about using his connections in the department to help him get at least 150 handgun permits and paying corrupt cops thousands of dollars for each permit. one man who got a permit had been involved in four motor vehicle accidents with 10 moving violations, an arrest for forgery, and four domestic violence complaints, including one where he was accused of threatening to kill someone. in the end it appears lichtenstein tried to bribe the wrong cop, a good cop who went to internal affairs and that led to the investigation. jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. sentencing day tomorrow for former new york cop peter liang convicted of manslaughter in the shooting death of akai gurley. liang's gun discharging in a stairwell, killing the unarmed gurley last year. a judge will decide how much time if any he spends in prison. prosecutor says he should not be

a tragic beginning for u.n. ambassador samantha powers' trip to cameroon. a jeep killing a young boy who darted on the road. the driver didn't have enough time to react. powers meeting with the boy's parents afterwards. as it happened, abc was in camaroon doing a story about powers when the accident happened. police are asking for the public's help looking for pickpockets targeting shoppers. a suspect in a blue coat toumpting to steal -- attempting to steal a woman's purse. he was escorted by security. one suspect distracted the victim while a male suspect stole her purse. she won four emmys and in the process won so many millions of hearts. playing the lovable mother on everybody loves raymond. doris roberts died at the age of 90.

all these years, her family said tonight. roberts also starred on a host of other tv shows and films. four deaths are now linked to the dangerous flooding in texas. authorities say two of those deaths after a driver ignored barricades and then tried to drive under a highway. emergency crews have made hundreds of rescues so far. look at that. the governor says more than half of texas remains under flood warnings tonight. >> just so devastating. amazing. >> it's up to 20 inches of rain in spots there. >> that's incredible. >> it's the flip side of what we had. we're stuck in a weather pattern that's amazing and goes on and on and then getting drenched over and over again. it will break up. right now just a very stagnant weather pattern. outside we go right now. it's a milder night than we've seen in a while.
