well. a judge ruled he will serve no jail time for that. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: an uproar inside and outside this brooklyn, new york, courthouse today, after it was determined this former new york city police officer, who shot and killed an innocent black man in 2014, wouldn't spend a single day behind bars. >> we're going to continue to fight until we get justice. >> reporter: peter liang was grief-stricken and in tears back in february, when he was convicted of second-degree manslaughter for the shooting death of akai gurley, an unarmed man who the police commissioner said "just happened" to be in a dark stairwell when the rookie officer fired his gun. >> i apologize to ms. butler and to akai gurley's family. i wish i could undo what happened. >> reporter: the judge reduced the conviction from manslaughter to criminally negligent homicide and then sentenced liang to five years probation, as recommended by the prosecutor. >> we demand accountability! >> reporter: while black lives matter protesters felt jail time

best chance to beat hillary clinton in in november. among democrats, two-thirds of voters said clinton has a better chance of beating trump compared to bernie sanders. >> abc political director shushannah walshe is here with insight and a look ahead. talk to me about these wins for trump and clinton. how big is this for them? >> these are significant wins. they both won by wider margins than the polls showed and they are their adopted home state for hillary clinton, hope state for donald trump. but they're still significant wins. going forward, donald trump needs -- he still -- he's one -- a contested convention is still a very likely possibility for donald trump. and, of course, there's no nobody that wants a contested convention less than donald trump. but his numbers, he won big in new york. but he has to have a repeat performance in the states going forward. now, new york was his home state.

he may just not be able to pull off. >> how much more likely is he to get the requisite amount of delegates before the convention with this win tonight. >> you're saying it's a possibility. but has it become more likely because of tonight? >> it's more likely but still hard. he won it by about 60% tonight. last night. and he needs to have almost 60% in the contest going forward. and that is going to be pretty difficult. ted cruz, he came in third that new york values comment really hurt him in new york. he looks to be totally shut out of the -- out of getting delegates last night. now it's mathematically impossible for him to clinch before the convention in july. >> and then on the democratic side, we saw huge crowds come out for busy. he seemed confident he was going to get an upset here. it didn't seem the crowds translayed to votes. what does this mean for both clinton and sanders? >> large crowds, some of his

still hillary clinton won by a significant margin. bernie sanders is from brooklyn and he campaigned hard. his campaign even outspent hillary clinton. but he needed to win big here to cut into her delegate margin. this is a delegate race. and that didn't happen tonight. >> okay. so the next super tuesday comes up soon. next tuesday. what's at stake? >> it's funny that you call this super tuesday because there are several states voting. pennsylvania, connecticut, delaware, maryland and rhode island. so that's a significant delegate haul. and because of their big wins last night, donald trump and hillary clinton, they have the momentum going into next tuesday. >> what are the underdogs now have to do in order to turn this around. >> when you look at the gop side, they have to start convincing the unbound delegates they are going to be the most popular, the prettiest girls in the room when it comes to cleveland in july. and that when it comes to cruz and kasich, because they're mathematically eliminated from getting this before the

only way for them to get the nomination. >> what about. >> go ahead. >> what about for trump? this is still kind i've sweet spot even if he doesn't get the magic number. >> exactly. >> there's a little woog he can do. >> the wooing will be done by all three of them. but donald trump has an edge because if we get through voting through the end -- through june and he is close, say he's 30 or 50 or even 100 delegates off, then he has several weeks where he can woo these unbound delegates. >> the very thing he's been rallying against. >> right. but he did on sunday hint he has better toys, those are his toys than mine than ted cruz. he can wine and dine these delegates maybe take them to mar-a-lago on his plane and try to convince them to vote for him on that first ballot in july in cleveland. and then it wouldn't go to a second ballot and you won't have this multiballot convention. of course, that would be good news for donald trump because he and his campaign know that the

parks. >> reporter: sanders said he thought they would do just fine, that he thought they would do better than expected. even though he woke up in times square, the senator flew almost immediately to pennsylvania that doesn't vote till next tuesday. he had a rally in erie before coming here to state college for a big event with what has been his bread and butter, college students at penn state. during his remarks which was largely his very typical campaign speech, senator sanders also talked specifically about the strict closed primary rules in the state of new york. >> it is absurd that in brooklyn, new york, where i was born actually, tens of thousands of people as i understand it, have been purged from the voting rolls. >> he said he believed there would need to be fundamental changes in the way that new york does business going forward.
