entered the rock and roll hall of fame a quarter of a century after his first hit, it was said he rewrote the rule book thanks to a blend of musical genres that produced a sound uniquely his own. by the time prince rocked the super bowl in 2007, he had little left to prove. his legacy secure. >> he was a trendsetter like no other and if you didn't have a prince, then you probably wouldn't have a lady gaga. and in a lot of ways he was the ultimate multitalented performer. >> reporter: he was born prince rogers nelson in minneapolis, a city he put on the musical map single-handedly. prince stood just 5'2" but cast a giant shadow over the music industry as an artist determined

others to go theirs by producing and writing for others like the bengals. his album, purple rain, became a hit movie and his score even earned him an oscar but his record company balked at his uncompromising vision and wish to change his name to a symbol. >> throughout the world if you hold this up and show it to people, what they think of, they will say prince. >> reporter: prince was legendary live. his falsetto among the most distinctive voices in the music industry. as the 20th century came to an end, the rocker seemed more relevant than ever, thanks in part to the mystery to keep us guessing. what's happening now, prince told one reporter in 2014, is where he was trying to get. >> he got there. sales of prince's music have

pop star's death. three of his songs are among the top 10 singles sold on itunes right now. and the very best reached number one on the itunes album chart. >> no surprise. >> outside the famed apollo theater in harlem, prince fans are remembering him. eyewitness news reporter carolina leid is there with reaction. >> talk about a tribute. there are dozens of people. take a look. who are just singing and dancing to just about every and any song they can hear and get their hands on from prince. so many of them saying of course that we have lost one of the greatest. >> reporter: fans danced to the song "when doves cry" outside the apollo theater this afternoon, remembering the impact of prince's music. the 57-year-old was found dead in his home in suburban minneapolis.

by the news, saying we lost a musical genius. >> sorry he's gone. an icon in his own right. we're going to be missing him. >> prince was somebody who's in my heart. it hurt me that he died. i'll always buy his records. i danced to his music. and god be with him. >> reporter: prince made several appearances at the apollo theater over the years. those who attended say he sure knew how to command and mesmerize an audience. >> there's something about him, this aura. when prince was around, everybody would stop and just watch. not everybody has that. >> i remember being at the apollo in the late 1990s when he made his debut there and all of harlem just was electric, the way he came on stage. it was a line around 125th street. >> reporter: he was hailed as a musical trailblazer by the industry.

prince was very socially conscious. >> a few years ago he called me and said i want to get you some funds and i want you to give it to trayvon martin's family. just out of the clear blue. and i did it. not long after that, he would call and ask about some police matter that we were fighting, some racial profiling. he was very much a person that was an introvert, but he would give of himself on that stage and give himself to the community and never wanted anyone to know. >> representatives here from the apollo theater say they do not have anything organized just yet for tonight because this is so sudden. but they of course will continue to play prince's music, continue to welcome his fans here to play tribute to one of the greatest artists that they've known. reporting live in harlem, carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. last friday prince was

at the time he blamed the flu. his recording studio, paisley park, is in chanhassen, must know. a lot of his fans now gathering there in the rain to pay their respects. the studio where prince's gold records line the walls is right near the minnesota native's home. many of the fans left flowers and cards and remembered what he meant to their hometown. >> he's our royalty. he's minneapolis. he crossed every boundary, every genre. he broke through barriers all over the place, whether they were social or sexual identity or music barriers. >> fans say one of the things they admired most about prince was that he was always being himself and never apologized for it. tonight brooklyn borough hall will be lit up in purple lights in honor of prince. he once donated a million dollars to the harlem children's zone. and tonight the nonprofit says we have a special love for him as a musician, social activist

he will be sorely missed. and president obama issued a statement saying a strong spirit transcends rules, prince once said, and nobody's spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative. stay with eyewitness news and abc news as we remember the life and career of prince. at abc7ny take a look at some pictures and video of prince through the years. and share your memories on our facebook page. we turn to other news. police are looking for the man who robbed and slashed a livery driver in yonkers. the driver was dropping off a passenger when that passenger pulled out a knife and attacked the drive. eyewitness news reporter darla miles is at jacoby medical center in the bronx with the latest on the investigation. >> that livery cab driver was released from the hospital about an hour or so ago. he told police he fought back hard and woke up the entire block trying to get help. >> when i saw the cab, he was already outside of his car. he was bleeding. >> reporter: outside in the dark of night, bloody and

64-year-old livery cab driver is stabbed in the torso and has defensive wounds on his hands robbed him. type. passenger also getting out. >> reporter: that scuffle woke up the families who live on thursday. police say the driver picked up a fare on the east side of town and when he arrived at the final destination, the passenger pulled out a knife and demanded money. they say the suspect stabbed the driver once in the torso inside of the car, then both men got out of the car where the victim got sliced all over his hands, trying to fight off his attacker a tablet. >> i just happened to hear what was going on, then like momentarily you heard a thump, i think a door slam. >> this driver, although he was registered with a car service, hadn't been to his car service probably in a year. the car service knows nothing

>> reporter: the victim was released from jacoby medical center thursday afternoon. he was taking calls for service from a cell phone and not from a taxi base where passenger info is recorded. >> we spoke to him on the phone today and he basically says i'm an independent driver, i don't want to talk to anybody. why? because he knows that what he did could have been avoided. >> police say they have a number of strong leads in this case but yet no suspect information and no arrests. if you have any information yonkers police. darla miles, channel 7 eyewitness news. the flames are under control, but firefighters are monitoring a brush fire in flare-ups tonight. four separate wildfires broke out near train tracks. it sent white smoke in to the air that could be seen for miles. firefighters are also battling the elements, high winds and low humidity make it a high risk day

the so-called ninja burglar pleaded guilty today to three counts of burglary in a staten island courtroom. investigators say 46-year-old robert costanzo confessed to a 10-year crime spree across the tri-state area. police believe costanzo stole more than $4 million in money and goods in 150 burglaries. costanzo will be sentenced in june. he could go to prison for 25 years. politics now. and republican frontrunner donald trump taking to twitter once again, demanding that his gop rivals drop out of the race. trump tweeted today senator ted cruz has been mathematically eliminated from the race and kasich should get out for the same reason. out. but cruz, he doesn't see it that way. >> i'm not going to reach 1237 and donald trump is not going to reach 1237. >> both cruz and kasich are not backing down. they're counting on the possibility of a contested gop convention.

clinton campaigning in connecticut today. she's focusing on guns in america. the democratic frontrunner led a discussion in hartford where she talked about gun reform laws that she says she intends to push if she becomes president. mrs. clinton says she does not intend to make promises she can't keep. >> i'm hear to tell you i will use every single minute of every day if i'm so fortunate enough to be your president looking for ways that we can save lives, that we can change the gun culture. >> bernie sanders hosted a town hall meeting in scranton, pennsylvania. he told supporters if enough of them get out and vote, he believes he can still get enough delegates to win the democratic nomination. don't forget, stay with eyewitness news and abc news for continuing coverage of vote 2016. connecticut's primary is next tuesday. that's april 26th. and we'll bring as voters head to the polls. new york city now moving to

especially times square. today mayor de blasio signed a bill in to law allowing rules on plaza use. the new rules are expected to restrict costume characters and others looking for tips to certain areas within times square. officials say they're responding to concerns about aggressive behavior by some characters. poor corporate earning reports sent stocks on wall street in to a dive. the dow took a triple-digit fall. a 12% drop in quarterly earnings for united airlines. the dow closed down 114 points at 17,983. the nasdaq finished down as well at 4846. while the s&p 500 fell 10 to 2091. still ahead, parents go after a long island school district. coming up, parents say their special needs students were victims of horrendous abuse. why they say the school covered it up. >> ambulance crash mysteries.

the parents of five children with autism and down syndrome are suing a school district on long island,

learning a teacher was allegedly abusing students. the parents are filing the lawsuit against the long beach school district. cefaan kim is in long beach with more. >> the allegations are shocking and disturbing. these are victims that would have had no way to speak up against alleged abuse. their parents say they were tortured by the very people they were supposed to trust. >> i'm sick to the bottom of my stomach over it. >> reporter: the pain on her face is visible and the anguish in her voice palpable. devastated over allegations their autistic 14-year-old son was abused by his special needs teacher. >> you can see he's scarred by it. and he'll never get that back. >> reporter: they're one of five families alleging their middle school kids were subjected to years of horrific treatment. their teacher, lisa weitzman, and two teaching assistants are accused of striking their

zip ties, spraying aerosol in their faces, locking them in bathrooms, and verbally and sexually abusing them. >> i want them all in jail. >> reporter: all the victims are nonverbal. the gringases have filed a lawsuit. their attorney says school officials knew the allegations in 2009. >> the superintendent and the administration, what they did is they went on a course of conduct of intimidation and using threats to keep these teachers, to keep the other witnesses quiet. >> reporter: it was this anonymous letter in 2015 that spread through the community that tipped parents off. the superintendent in a statement says the long beach school district has complied and will continue to comply with all federal and state legal requirements regarding complaints to the district about possible abuse or mistreatment of our students. weitzman is on paid leave and faces a hearing that could lead to her dismissal.

allegations and has filed her own claim against the district for falsifying charges against retaliation for a constant advocacy for her students. the gringases not buying that. they say they can clearly tell something happened to their son. >> he'd get off the bus and he'd be shaking. >> they believe there are other victims whose parents may not even be aware allegedly of what happened. the question they say is how many more and for how long was this going on for. reporting live at long beach middle school, cefaan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. walgreen's is settling with new york's attorney general, paying a fine. investigators saying they found many cases of misleading advertising at walgreen's and duane reed locations.

[ laughter ] >> it's worked for nine days. i don't think it's going to work again tomorrow unfortunately. >> no? >> here's the thing. the great part of it is it's not a washout tomorrow and there's much needed rain coming in, although not widespread. there will be scattered showers and storms through the afternoon and evening hours. look at the empire state building. you also notice high clouds coming in right now. that's kind of the precursor. we've had deep blue sky. not a cloud in the sky. and finally high clouds are coming in, the leading edge of the next system. the high today, 73 in central park. running 10 above average. and we could make a run at 80 tomorrow with enough sunshine peeking through the clouds at times. there are your sunrise and sunset times. tonight is going to be a milder evening. last year in the state, showers early then we cleared out. and 65. so it's 76 in hopewell junction. 69 in armonk. 70 in stanford right now. the wind has been coming out of the south.

islip and 59 montauk. inland numbers doing much better in the low and middle 70s. this is a big difference from yesterday. it was 9% humidity levels at 5:00. so we're 30% now. so we're starting to see that climb with warm or humid air coming in. warning. number 1, it was for the entire that was dropped. dropped. the winds are diminishing and climb. so it's 7:00 tonight, just high becoming mostly cloudy overnight. there can be a shower late in the game tonight. it's widely scattered, mainly west of new york city then i think the clouds are actually thinning out again for a period tomorrow morning in to the midday before showers start to pop up during the afternoon hours. you may be holding the umbrella most of the time tomorrow. then the occasional shower or thunderstorm starts to come in during the afternoon hours. these showers off to the west aren't going to make it in right now. they're just setting the table for the increasing humidity. but there are the showers. we'll try to get in to tomorrow

come in. the core of the system is just getting in to western illinois. it's going to be a slow process. i think it will take a lot of the day to get this in here and unfortunately may take in to the morning hours on saturday to leave. so the streak of dry weather will end. i don't think we're getting a lot of rain but some places could get to a rumble of thunder and a downpour. we pick up to a quarter to half inch of rainfall. we may wake up to clouds and a shower. if you watch the futurecast here, we've got clouds coming in tonight, stray shower late. but thin spots in the clouds, you'll see a little sunshine through the midday and afternoon. scattered showers and storms can pop up. we're not talking severe but a brief line of downpours. you'll have to deal with that off and on in to tomorrow night. partly to mostly cloudy. mild night. only 59. not the chill or any frost advisories we've seen over the past couple of nights. clouds, sunny breaks as well. a stray morning shower and more afternoon.

clos along with humidity it's a real summary feel. still a lingering shower overnight, about 58. here's what we're working on for 5:30. this is something i'm concerned about with the weekend forecast. saturday morning could be not only cloudy but a little bit damp especially from the city eastward through mid or late morning then we clear out. 50s at the coast on sunday a possibility. so a big cool-down there. how about unsettled next week with the front sort of meandering over the area. we'll have the details on that in the 7-day accuweather forecast in a little while. police in nassau county are investigating an suv crash that killed one person and injured three others. investigators say a group of people were arguing in the street in hempstead at around 5:00 last night. that's when the driver of an suv lost control and plowed in to them. a woman was killed. three other people are being treated at the hospital. crews are working to shore up an unstable construction site that triggered the evacuation of nine buildings. an engineer reported a problem with the second floor of a

this has been a big story on our social media sites. one of the most popular female professional wrestlers ever has died. joan chyna was found dead in her redondo beach, california home this morning. the 46-year-old was discovered after a friend went to check on her after she hadn't returned calls for several days. there's no official cause of death as of yet but police initially reported that it was a possible overdose. a key suspect in november's terror attacks in paris has been charged with attempted murder for a shootout with police in brussels. four police officers were fired on and slightly injured when

one of the many unforgettable songs from prince soundtracks from many of our childhoods. the pop superstar died today at his home in paisley park. he was 57. first responders found him unresponsive in an elevator but at this point what happened remains a mystery. the news comes days after prince's plane made an emergency landing and he was taken to the hospital. a spokesperson says he was treated for the flu. his iconic sound spanned four decades, defying genres, impacting generations and tonight new york city pays tribute. you're looking live at the apollo theater in harlem where fans have gathered and the marquee was changed in prince's honor, as you see there with the words "nothing compares to you." >> brooklyn borough president

lit purple in honor of prince, the soundtrack of a generation and an icon we lost far too soon. we turn to other news. we have the latest on that ambulance that slammed in to an overpass on the southern state parkway. that accident killed both the 55-year-old driver and the patient in the back of the ambulance. >> that patient was james larson. he survived three transplant surgeries only to die in the back of that ambulance as he was headed to rehab. eyewitness news reporter stacey sager talked with his grieving family. she joins us now from union dale. >> he was on the road to recovery. this was supposed to be a routine ambulance trip. sadly, it wasn't, and now two families are grieving. >> he was a great guy, great brother. he was a great role model. great father.

was finally recovering from an awful ordeal. the 36-year-old from elmont struggling through two heart transplants and a kidney transplant. this was supposed to be the easy part. a routine ambulance transport yesterday because larson was leaving the hospital for the first time in 15 months and headed to a rehab center here in uniondale to finish his recovery. >> he was fine. he was great. he was off the oxygen and eating solids and eating again and he was ready to go home. >> reporter: the ambulance inexplicably slammed in to a stone overpass on the eastbound side of the southern state parkway here in lake view. police say there appears to be no criminality but an autopsy is being done on the ambulance driver who was also killed. queens. here in jamaica today, shock and grief.

shannon sohn, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> keep us updated. new at 5:00, a school board member in new jersey now admits to his role in bilking the district out of $137,000. former mount olive township school board member robert mania pled guilty today to wire fraud. prosecutors say he schemed with others to increase commissions paid by the district's health insurance carrier. part of the commission was allegedly diverted to mania and others. he faces up to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced in july. mitsubishi motors in japan was raided after the company reported fuel efficiency tests were rigged. the company apologized and said employees manipulated data on more than 620,000 vehicles. tests would show mitsubishi's lying of mini cars got much better gas mileage than they actually do. the cars have been produced since 2013 and are popular for

the fbi paid more than $1 million to a help hacking in to the phone used by the san bernardino terrorist, that's according to fbi director james comey. when asked how much the agency paid to get in to the phone, he replied more than i will make in the remainder of this job. concerns tonight about one plan to fight the zika virus. some want to wipe out zika carrying mosquitos with other mosquitos, mosquitos that have been genetically modified, and that's not sitting well with everyone. abc's stephanie ramos explains why some are sounding the alarm. >> reporter: key west, florida is where scientists hope to test out their newest weapon to combat the growing zika virus. genetically modified mosquitos. >> before they could be tested evaluate them. they look at data from all the places they've been tested and ruled they're safe for the environment and people. >> reporter: some residents want no part in the trial. >> we don't want to be lab rats. >> reporter: they're angry at

hit-and-run accident that killed a blind man. morales is charged with leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death. suffolk county police say he was driving an suv that hit 64-year-old warren carstendic. he died at the hospital. a high school student has died after being attacked by several other students, this happening right on school grounds. the 16-year-old got in to a fight with another teen inside the girls bathroom this morning in delaware. that's when several others joined in. a witness says the young girl hit her head on a sink. the spokesperson for the school says two students are currently being questioned. >> i am so upset that a young lady lost her life today. things like this shouldn't happen. my heart bleeds for the family. the kids that go to this school, the administrators, and our city. >> just tragic. the victim's name has not been released. school officials are

the classroom after seeing a disturbing video. that video shows the 39-year-old man body slamming a 14-year-old student. body slamming him right in to a desk. the fight inside a milwaukee, wisconsin classroom sent students scrambling and it brought security racing in to break up that fight. students say it started as an argument between the two and quickly escalated. >> kept on arguing, getting in each other's face. i kept watching like this is unreal, i cannot believe this. >> the student suffered minor injuries and was treated at a hospital. the school district says it is cooperating with an investigation by the milwaukee police department and that the aide may be fired as a result of this incident. a grand celebration today fit for a queen. britain's elizabeth ii is 90 years old. in london, the bells rang out and the crowds came out to celebrate.

on the purple rain tour. fantastic. it's weird. >> i know that's what a lot of people are going to be doing this evening, playing the music. enjoying as much of the good weather as we can until the rain comes in which we need. >> we do. i don't think we're getting drenched but some of us may get a thunderstorm tomorrow evening. it's been nine straight dry days. the streak ends tomorrow. then we'll have more rain chances as we go through the last week of april. we have beautiful meadow. the vegetation exploded last weekend. things have been slow this week. we haven't been able to get a drink to these plants and trees. 71 degrees. partly sunny skies. south wind around 6 miles per hour. so through the evening hours unlike the last couple of nights, the temperatures aren't going to take a nose dive because the air is starting to get a little bit more humid. we have cloud cover coming in and a nice southwest wind out ahead of the approaching front.

as visiting the yankees at 7:05. 61 degrees tomorrow morning. i think what happens overnight is a couple showers try to sneak in toward dawn. it's almost the initial surge of some of the moisture coming in and the higher humidity air. then the clouds will try to thin out a little bit. midmorning in to let's say lunchtime. you have a chance to have a nice outdoor lunch. i'd have the umbrella because showers start to form during the early afternoon hours. then you have to be on guard for a scattered shower or thunderstorm through the evening. not that it's raining all the time but there will be scattered ones about. also warm temperatures. 75 to 80 degrees. here's the futurecast tonight. we go in to tomorrow morning where you can see maybe there's a couple stray showers around but otherwise, clouds and sunny breaks. through the midday that will be the idea. once we get in to the afternoon and the daytime heating has set in, scattered showers and a rumble of thunder will set in. see how the coverage is widely scattered. we're not talking about widespread drenching rains that last all afternoon. it's the occasional shower or

the umbrella in to your friday night plans. notice the forecast rainfall amounts through early afternoon. little to no rainfall across the area and then you see scattered amounts here and it will be variable. it's not going to be a smooth quarter inch to a half inch. it's wherever we get in the scattered showers or downpours, we get higher rainfall amounts. 7-day accuweather forecast looking like this. shower or storm tomorrow about 80. saturday is a little bit cooler. the one thing i'm concerned about on saturday is it looks like this front which is slow to get here is also going to be slow to depart. i'm not going to be surprised to see clouds lingering in the morning and maybe a shower from the city south and east. then we'll clear things out through the afternoon. sunday is a sunny day but cool. we have a wind coming off the atlantic. very pleasant spring day. maybe only 50s along the coast. monday, big range in temperature. could be in the 60s in the northern suburbs with a shower. about 72 in the city and 75 to maybe even 80 south of the city. big range there. decent rain on tuesday. nice and seasonable midweek.
