>> i'm diana williams in for residents try to identifying out where to go and investigators try to piece together what happened. eyewitness news reporter stacey stacey? >> reporter: dave, this is road in medford. fire got started. this condominium complex. it took firefighters two hours to get the town of brookhaven, fire marshals are trying to figure out the cause. the flames were fast and furious ripping through the blue ridge condominium complex shortly after midnight. this is what it looked like when firefighters got here. it took five other fire departments assisting medford to get the blaze under control. when it was over, authorities

nick and his family were among them. >> it was crazy. i can't believe it took out so much of the complex, ridiculous. >> reporter: but routine because of the way the complex was built according to the fire chief. >> it's the type of construction it was built with and lack of firewalls between the units. no lives were lost but unfortunately quite a of those displaced are elderly. the residents are hoping to salvage memories in the charred mess, debris strewn inside and out. >> almost all these women are, unfortunately, widowed over here. their lives are in those houses. >> reporter: and we are back live now looking at this fire damage. we have seen residents here throughout the morning. people are just trying to salvage, as we said, some memories. this is the second time this

moving fire where people were worried that the fire would jump from one home to another. the good news here is these buildings were evacuated in about five to seven minutes. no one was injured. once again, the fire marshal in brookhaven is investigating. live in medford, stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. safe. thank you, stacey. breaking news happening in ohio. seven people are dead after a series of shootings. right now the gunman is still on the loose. police believe there were at least three different crime scenes all of them in pike county which is an area south of columbus, ohio, some children we are told are among the victims. the shooting happened in peoples, a small town in that rural county. a local high school is locked down and, of course, as soon as we get new information on the shooting, we will bring it to you. we will turn now to the loss of a music icon. an autopsy is scheduled today for prince after he was found

this as so many questions surround his death. the tributes continue to pour in as fans remember the artist and share the love of his music and talent. abc's marci gonzales is outside his music studio with more reaction. diana. police will be giving an update this afternoon. officers are still working on the other side of this fence growing. people are leaving flowers, balloons honoring a legend. mourning the death of a music icon by celebrating the songs that were his life. thousands of prince's fans dancing through the night in minneapolis. the legendary songwriter, musician in his hometown lit up in contribute as investigators worked to figure out what happened in his final moments. local police say at 9:43 yesterday morning deputies

paisley park, the megastar's estate and studio finding prince rogers nelson unresponsive in an elevator. they attempted cpr but couldn't revive him. his staff telling authorities prince was treated by a doctor earlier in the day for an illness. a week earlier after this show in atlanta -- >> purple rain . >> reporter: -- his private plane made an emergency landing, his publicist blaming the flu. after three hours in the hospital, the next day he gave an impromptu performance reassuring his fans. >> he said when you hear news, give it a few days before you say prayers. >> it's surreal. i miss him dearly. >> reporter: reverberating around the globe. you can feel that grief here outside of prince's estate. an up is being done today but

men in two different cars opened fire on mermaid avenue and west 33rd street in coney island around 7:30 last night. one of the bullets grazed the victim in the cheek. she was taken to lutheran hospital and is expected to be okay. both the gunmen are on the loose. to politics, in the race for the white house, donald trump claims he will modify his bombastic tone in order to appear more presidential. his top aides told g.o.p. leaders behind closed doors that the candidate will moderate his tone in order to appeal to voters in the general election. meanwhile, ted cruz is hammering trump for his stance on north carolina law banning transgender people from using with. >> he thought that men should be able to go into the girl's bathroom if they want to. now, let me ask you, have we gone stark raving nuts. >> trump says he will soon hold

on policy and he says he may even use a teleprompter. as for the democrats, hillary clinton and bernie sanders are looking ahead to another super tuesday. voters in connecticut, delaware, maryland, pennsylvania and rhode island head to the polls. clinton, the democratic front- runner was in connecticut yesterday. she was talking about gun violence. sanders spent much of the day campaigning in pennsylvania telling voters that victory is within reach even though he is delegate count. it's earth day. that coincides with an important day at the u.n. a record number of countries. 171 have signed a landmark agreement on climate change. u.s. officials made a plea to recommit to win the war against carbon emissions. they got help from leonardo dicaprio. he traveled the world documenting the effects and was absolutely terrified by what he found. >> you know what will happen if this is left unchecked.

the young men involved in a violent robbery in championship are linked to a second attack. police released pictures of them this morning. they may be teenagers. they are accused of following a 73-year-old man into his home on the upper east side then accused of threatening him with a knife and taking his cash. before that attack, police say the same assailants punched a teenager inside central park and stole his wallet. a police released video of the robber they say is targeting dunkin donut stores in queens. the man is accused of targeting the same dunkin donuts twice. you can see him taking cash from the register in jamaica estates last thursday. less say the same day he robbed another dunkin donuts one mile away. an uber driver accused of going on a deadly shooting rampage in michigan will be in court for a hearing to determine his mental status. the case against jason dalton

while experts determine whether he can assist his lawyer. he has been found competent. dalton is accused of killing six people during a series of random shootings in between uber trips in kalamazoo michigan last february. a new information on the death of a teenager allegedly at the hands of her classmates. the incident may have been recorded. two students were being questioned as hundreds gathered last night at a vigil for 16- year-old amy joiner. investigators say the sophomore died after a vicious beating in the bathroom of a high school. police say some students may have recorded the killing on their cell phones. >> just sad. unusual police pursuit and it was caught on camera. a woman accused of going on a joy ride in a stolen ambulance. >> new concerns after the earthquake in ecuador. the concerns that could put more people at risk. outside.

delays getting water to those affected. mosquito-borne illnesses may soon be spreading. a 6.0 quake rattled the coast. the president is urging residents to stay calm. the death toll has risen to at least 587 people. >> wow. there is a ray of hope among the devastation. video shows the rescue of a duck that was buried under a collapsed building for four days. crews were digging for six hours. they did not find survivors but then they found the duck. they fed it papaya and water. one lucky duck. probably gave all those responders hope in their heart. creature. >> so much devastation. it's beyond our imagination. >> fine. day. after 1:00. >> really. how far will you get?

there will be from great neck to hauppauge, massapequa, 73. 60 to montauk. 64 bridgeport. southerly wind make it coolerment islip 65 to contrast river almost 80. to the west there are showers. then otherwise we will have a hazy high cloud milky sky. the showers are broken up. there is not a whole lot of upper level support with this. there is a lot of moisture and with the heating, things like this is not in favor of this front as it slides eastward. all the conditions in the atmosphere are not there for the thunderstorms. but one or two showers will pop up. as we get to the afternoon and evening, one or two showers and thunderstorms are going to pop up. there could be a line in here across fire island tonight. take your umbrella this evening. overnight as the front keeps pushing eastward, the guidance

well, it may be the next big thing in aviation at least on sunny days. a plane taking flight without fuel. this experimental plane is using the sun to charge its engine. it's called the solar impulse 2 and it took off from hawaii with a pilot on board. the solar plane has a wingspan of a boeing 747 but weighs about as much as an s.u.v. it's solar powered so the plane needs near perfect conditions to fly. the pilot hopes to some day fly around the world. a woman in oklahoma is accused of going for a joy ride inside of a stolen ambulance. this dash-cam video shows police chasing after the woman. investigators say she had just gotten out of jail when she stole an ambulance stopped in front of a hospital. the ambulance was missing for two hours before being spotted on the highway. officers eventually got the

small town. police got a report of the animal on out loose yesterday. they enlisted the help of animal control to wrangle the female tiger. the tiger had a collar and a leash. a stroking string of robberies in queens. one hit in the face with a rock hit so badly he ended up in the hospital. the video police hope will get this dangerous criminal off the street. and another vicious pit bull attack in new jersey. we will hear from a woman terrorized walking her dog and learn what saved him. >> and what did elvis and richard nixon have in common? an odd white house meeting

our top story, fire forced a dozen people from their homes inside a condo complex in medford, long island. everyone made it out before the flames engulfed the complex. an autopsy is being conducted on the body of music icon prince. later today police are expected to discuss their investigation. we will bring you the news conference live this afternoon on eyewitness news. and we continue to follow breaking news in ohio. at least seven people are killed including some children. right now the gunman is on the loose. we will stay on top of that story. hello again, i'm david novarro. >> i'm diana williams in for shirleen allicot. police in queens are investigating a pair of brutal robberies including one in which the attackers beat the victim with a rock. >> police are looking for three people behind the apparently random attacks. rob nelson has the latest on

>> reporter: dave, we are on the block where the second attack took place a few days ago, april 17th. this is a spring of particularly vicious and violent attacks. police are asking for the public's help to find the three suspects. letter it was about 11:30 at night on 77th street when one of the three suspects approached a 32-year-old man from behind. they hit him in the face with a rock and once the victim fell, all three suspects began to kick and punch him in his face and body and eventually took his cell phone and wallet. the victim suffered serious injuries to his face and was taken to jamaica hospital in critical but stable condition. in the first incident, just a day earlier, on the 16th. three suspects attacked a 25- year-old man from behind beating him and taking his cell phone and wallet as well. that victim suffered injuries to his face, too and was taken to new york presbyterian queens

authorities are describing the suspects as young black males in their late teens or early 20s. at the time of the attacks they were wearing dark colored hooded sweaters with them over their heads. if you have information call 1- 800-577-tips. we will have more in the afternoon. reporting live in queens, rob nelson. police released video they hope will give them information for this man. they say he forced an 84-year- old woman in her apartment at knifepoint monday and held her hostage for 2 1/2 hours. letter she told her story exclusively to eyewitness news describing how the man choked her and then stole more $300. to keep them calm she served him a meal and offered him wine before he left the apartment. if you have any information on this, you are asked to call police.

attack for the second time in two weeks. this is happening in nutley, new jersey. the latest attack had a bit bullying after a smaller dog. yvette king said the large loose dog clamped its jaws around her dog's head then bit her in the hand without warning. a police officer managed to pry the pit bull's jaw open but the small dog suffered serious injuries. >> he is injured in his ear. he is injured on his shoulder, under his neck, on the top of his head and on his eye. the doctor said he is fortunate that he didn't lose his eye. two weeks ago a baby girl in a stroller was attacked by a pit bull. she needed 70 stitches to close her wounds. in the latest attack, the pit bull was living in nutley the past week on a trial basis after an attack in midland park. happening tomorrow, the thruway authority will impose cashless tolls.

but no fix can be stranger than the simple happened. speaking of strange, another new movie featuring tom hanks as a businessman with a hologram for the king is set in south africa -- sorry, saudi arabia. he plays an executive set to sell technology there while still suffering the effects of his divorce. hanks has surrey earned the right to go off the beaten track and we can't begrudge him the odd movie or two but this film never decides what it wants to be, part satire, some romance and some political commentary put in. similar ground was covered five years ago in a terrific movie called salmon fishing in the yemen. rent that one instead of seeing this. >> oh. >> on "first at 4:00" i will review the hunts men, winter's war.

i played in it for 25 years friday afternoons before rush hour. a lot of is shine. humidity is dry. 76 degrees and a southerly wind that has been picking up the moisture. the pressure is falling. front is approaching from the west. yesterday's high 73. normal 64. so far the temperatures have been warming up well above normal for this time of the year. u.v. index a 7. pollen count will get to high now for birch, maple, juniper and popular. letter you will notice it as we go over the next few days. 77 for kingston to poughkeepsie, all the way down to lakehurst 77. 73 around the five boroughs. it will warm up as coastal sections will be cooler with a southerly wind. the water temperature is about 51, 52 makes it cooler. now to the west, the showers. these will sweep eastward. there is a batch for southern new jersey, commute time. a few more showers into the evening.

this kitten a few days old. look at the little kitty found with it is umbilical cord still attached and eyes closed. rescuers say a woman heard the kitten and they came to its rescue. they named the kitty hope. firefighters were able to find an adult cat with a foster family. so that kitten now has a mama. let's hope when hope is old
