from a path here on campus and placed in a wooded area, where she was attacked. she describes her attacker as a 40-year-old male, who police are still searching for at this point. in the meantime, they're asking students here on campus to use the buddy system as the hunt for this suspect continues. just a short time ago, we spoke with police about this ongoing investigation. >> one of the things we're obviously looking to do is determine who had access to the campus. obviously, there are places that are open, that may not be in camera, but we are hoping that at some point during the time prior to this event occurring that there may in fact have been video of the individual. >> reporter: now in addition to the fairfield police department looking into this, there are 27 full time campus police officers working on rotating shifts, patrolling the campus as well.

officials there have been counselors with the victim and her family since this incident occurred last night. thank you. we want to turn now to the weather. we could be in for a stormy afternoon. last night, lightning struck a tree in new jersey which then ignited a house fire. geoff smith spoke to a man inside that house. we begin with meteorologist bill evans who is tracking today's storms, bill. >> we're going to talk to jeff in a just a moment, that was a crazy lightning strike last night. you may have been awoken during the night from the lightning strikes. another is on the way, and our temperatures have been warming up as we speak. it's a real soupy look outside. that means we've got a lot of moisture for these storms to work with. the temperature is 56 degrees. as we go into the rest of the afternoon, the temperature should climb into the 70s. you see a band of rain coming through now on the accutrack radar. the rain we're watching is back here in this line. this is of showers and

some heat. come up over the mountains, and pick up a little lift. rainfall from the first batch of rain. nearly .4. nearly .2 in the park. here is our future cast, our computer guidance. that line starts to come out of 1:00 out of sullivan and orange county. as we go to 3:00, they move pretty fast. they will contain gusty winds, possibility of hail, frequent lightning, and you see by 4:00, they're right across long island, the city, central jersey. by 5:00 and 6:00, they're out and gone, and we clear up. but there could be a strike as we go through the afternoon, with some frequent lightning around the area, just like we had overnight last night. and that's where geoff smith is this morning, where some of those lightning strikes took place. glenn rock, new jersey, that's just got to be a crazy situation there. lightning can do some phenomenal things. >> reporter: the power of lightning, bill, just speaks

we're along gainer place in glenn rock, new jersey. no big surprise lightning struck this area. it tends to go to the tallest objects. exploding bark. once it got down to the ground, it started spreading out, it actually spread out toward the sprinkler system of this home, entering the home, eventually, starting a fire. >> basically, i was downstairs. all of a sudden, i heard a giant boom, like a gunshot being in your ear. almost explosive really. after a few more seconds, i started hearing fire alarms. i hear my mom tell me to get out of the house. there's a fire. so i ran outside of the house. luckily, my neighbor is chief of the fire department.

five minutes, yeah. real hero, real hero. it sounded legitimate like a gunshot in your ear. i felt static in my hand from the lightning. >> reporter: the ironic thing, that fire chief who lives next door was actually responding to another call caused by lightning. we talked to an insurance adjustor. he said most of the wires in the home were actually just completely fried by this lightning. as i was saying, it went through the wires, if lightning can do this to a tree, these are shards of this bark are all over this yard. you can only imagine what it could do to a person. that's why whenever you hear thunder, and you might hear thunder this afternoon, head fin doors immediately. stay away from anything electrical, and definitely stay away from windows. live in glenn rock, i'm meteorologist geoff smith. part of a building came crashing down onto the sidewalk in the bronx.

police say he was attempting to engage the child in conversation about his grandson. the child ran inside, and the man drove off. a dispute on the sticks train overnight, leaves a man with knife wounds and a suspect on the run. police say two men were arguing when one man pull out a weapon. the victim tried to pull out the knife, and was cut on his finger. he got off on grand central terminal, and went to the hospital. the suspect went off with the greenback pack and the knife. surveillance video shows him getting back into his car after the attack on saturday night. police say it all started on the greensboro bridge. the assailant drove off after stabbing another driver 11 times, police say. the victim, who is now in critical condition, tried to drive himself to the hospital. >> he got in the car, drove several blocks and crashed it from his wounds, so he had to go back to the original spot, which was 64th and york.

the street, and struck him with it. the 12-year-old boy says he and his friends were playing street hockey when the woman yelled at the boys for making too much noise. she hit him in his leg. the robber used a large kitchen knife to rob a subway store. the reward for his arrest has now climbed to $10,000. police are closing in on filing charges in a horrific fatal beating in delaware where a student was killed inside a school. three individuals of interest are being questioned in the case. the attorney general's office now deciding on the severity of the charges. investigators say that 16-year- old amy joiner francis was jumped in the bathroom by fellow students at a high school in wilmington last week. students say the fight was over

eye on, as we go into the afternoon. here's a look at the george washington bridge. you say a lot of rain to work with. temperatures 55, 56 degrees. the humidity 77%. an east wind here and looking at high temperatures so far around 56. so normal is 65. so we're a little cooler this hour, but we'll warm up fast as we go into the next few hours. the winds are going to shift around to mostly the southwest, as we see the pressure has been falling. that's a really unstable air mass. so far, the showers we had this morning, produced .17 of an inch of rain. the thunder threat returns for the afternoon. tomorrow is a great day. week. the weekend looks great. 47 hampton bay up to the north. 50 around poughkeepsie. 74 at wrights town. that kind of heating going on.

here, from 40s and 50s to the north, to the 80s to the west here, that will help fire up thunderstorms too. here comes the wind out of the southwest, curling around off the water, which is 54 degrees toward long island. a couple of sprinkles with this first band coming through. the next band that i'm talking about that's starting to see a few thunderstorms fire up here around scranton/wilkes-barre. the heating is good to come on through with some gusty waves southwest. here is the future cast. 3:00, it's along 287, 95. that's right after school. so pop up thunderstorms on the guidance here. then 4:00, 5:00, you still have those pushing on through. the temperature is going to warm fast to about 73. gusty winds, showers and a thunderstorm from now until about 5:00. it turns cooler tonight, and it's cloudy and dry.

saving a man about to jump off of a bridge. the dash cam from the squad car captured the dramatic moments. >> the officer from riverdale was able to capture him just in time. toni with more. >> reporter: you know, police officers are so quick to say, it comes with the job, my training, my adrenalin kicked in. but sergeant greg bogert was literally the difference between life and death yesterday. his dash cam captured this 100% save. the sergeant got the call of a distraught man, yesterday who was walking, pacing on an interstate 287 overpass. the man, police, eventually found out was distraught over some family issues. police say he intended to end his pain, by taking his life. taking a leap off that bridge, but sergeant bogert was stronger and fast. >> describe the video for me,

we're going to show it to you later coming up on eyewitness news. back to you. also in new jersey, dramatic new video of a crash involving a police officer who pulled over a semi truck. the south brunswick officer was sitting inside of his car, processing paperwork, when another car veered to the shoulder and slammed right into him. amazingly, no one was seriously hurt here. the 24-year-old driver of the car may have suffered a medical episode, while the accident is under investigation. charges are not expected. new at noon, a drug scandal on campus. the former supervisor at the university of connecticut student health services now under arrest. charged with forging hundreds of prescriptions. police say 46-year-old michael ozinski also ordered items for his personal use. an internal audit found he

come from the jcpenney inside the staten island mall. police say the suspect stuck his cell phone under the door and recorded the 35-year-old woman as they changed. officer jason lay resigned this morning, after officials say dozens of racist, and homophobic text messages were found on his personal phone. they were discovered as part of an investigation into a sexual assault allegation made against lay. two years ago, a texting scandal triggered a review of 16 cases of biased policing. that resulted in the dismissal of 13 cases. now to the latest on a fitness instructor murdered at a church in texas. the victim's family opening up, and believe the killer may have used social media to track her moments. ryan smith has the latest on investigation as police look for whoever was behind this.

we're back with an eyewitness news exclusive. a delay to clean up one of the most toxic water ways in new york. we got a loot from the gowanus canal. he says it's going to take several more years for cleanup to begin on the canal after a lengthy negotiation between the city and the epa over the location of a retension tank. >> in spite of good laws that require a cleanup of a mess like this, government is actually getting in the way. >> it really is a polluted mess. those fighting for the gowanus to be cleaned up say the water way could be an essential part of the community, with water activities, fishing, and even local wildlife returning. sometimes water can roll uphill. new york city homeowners are about to get a $183 credit on their water bills.

because mayor de blasio is no longer forcing the water board to pay represent to the city. that change saves the board $244 million next year, and that will save the average household about 17% on their annual bill. a bridal designer is suing alexander mcqueen's label, accusing it of copying some of her ideas for the wedding dress worn by the duchess of queens. she got a letter saying kate middleton was most interested in her work. a spokesman said she never saw kendall's sketches, while a spokesman for alexander mcqueen said the claims are nonsense and ridiculous. let's turn to the weather now and tell me what i've got cooking here. >> which is neither nonsense or ridiculous. one thing that helps fire up thunderstorms this time of the year, is a little sunshine. let's take a look to the west and you'll see a little sunshine coming through those clouds.

that temperature of 55 degrees. i would imagine our 1:00 temperature is going to jump to 60. maybe even low 60s, with that sun out now ahead of this line of showers and thunderstorms that is starting to build. we've got a high humidity. a light east wind that's going to turn around and go south- southwest. the temperature is going to jump in the next hour or two. down to the south, it's already jumped into the 70s here around tom's river, 81. 77 belmar. a big range in temperatures here. that's because the front sagging down to here, and low is going to sweep through here. you've got a wide range of temperatures. really cool up to the north and warm down to the south. there is that wind we're talking about. a land breeze that's going to come in here out of the southwest. here the winds are coming in out of the northeast. the showers and thunderstorms are starting to fire here now in the mountains in pennsylvania. they just keep firing up, and lifting. they come over the mountains.

you see with the sunny breaks here. they'll run into this warmer air, and run into pretty good thunderstorms this afternoon. you see the line starting to get going at 2:00, through i- 84. 3:00, westchester, rockland county, northern jersey. fairfield county right at after school time. then that front sags south and through the five boroughs, long island by 4:00, they're fast moving, but a quick hit of lightning, gusty wind, heavy downpour of rain, calling the area about a quarter inch of rain. any rain we get, we really need. we're about 5 inches short. the 2:00 is showing it will jump to 61. 69 around morristown. as we see that line coming on through, the temperature is still 78 around tom's river. should probably jump up more to the low 70s by the time that front plows through. it will be father a brief moment. once that dives through the area, we'll have a nice day tomorrow. we'll have sunshine, more sunshine will be off to the north.
