who is raising sarah's little girl and struggling with what to tell her. we'll have more at 6:00. n.j. burkett, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you. a four hour standoff in newark is over after police say a man stabbed his wife in front of her own grandson. all this starts around 11:30 this morning. the wife and grandson were able to get out of the house after inside. eventually the 65-year-old surrendered and was taken away on a stretcher. a woman was taken to the hospital where she is now undergoing surgery. no word yet about exactly what led to the initial stabbing. we are learning more about the first cases of zika apparently transmitted by mosquitoes on the u.s. mainland. a woman and three men in florida likely contracted the virus through mosquito bites according to the state's

area. there have been 537 travel related cases of zika, 449 in new york, 50 in new jersey, and 38 in connecticut. eyewitness news reporter stacey sager is at la guardia airport with the new concerns tonight. stacy. >> it's more sobering than alarming. that was the reaction from health officials here in new york city today. they say none of this is a real surprise to them. but they hope the public understands what's happened in florida. it's their zika was transmitted by a mosquito in the united states. it is not surprising given that the type of mosquito that carries the zika virus lives in florida, but what's encouraging is the cdc is fairly certain the tiny outbreak in the community was contained. three men and one woman in adjacent workplaces, infected locally by a mosquito unable to travel more than 150 meters in

department of health believes that active transmissions of this virus could be occurring in one small area, in one small area of miami-dade county. it's just north of downtown. >> the cdc says the area was thoroughly sprayed. here in new york city, meanwhile, that type of mosquito hasn't been found. instead, a cousin, which theoretically could zika but hasn't. >> and because of that theoretical possibility, the city been leaning forward very early on with aggressive measures to protect new yorkers. >> but here's the real concern. another alert from the cdc today, what they're calling a zika ohm demonstratic now -- ohm ohm epidemic in puerto rico. positive zika test results have jumped from 14 to 64% in just 4

been there several days. she said her car became stuck in soft sand and she had to collect rain water just to have something to drink. today we are getting our first look inside the new sandy hook elementary school in connecticut. the new building contains no obvious memorials to the 26 people who died inside the old school nearly four years ago. but it was created with them in mind. designed to be above all safe. tim fleischer has the story from newtown. >> okay. sorry for the technical difficulties. we'll come back to that story in a moment. marine crews came to the rescue of a man thrown from his boat from a wave in long island. it happened off blue point. authorities say the boater was operating the vessel during a rainstorm when a wave knocked

out to find the missing boater. they found the 21-year-old man an hour and a half later, about a mile from where the boat was discovered. they pulled him from the water, he somehow amazingly, thankfully was not hurt. thank goodness. that water temperature is probably about 75 now which obviously made it bearable for a while. >> thankfully. how about that forecast. >> cleared out, sir. >> not bad. we had a pretty good deluge this morning. we go outside, we have blue sky out there, still have the humidity. it's a warm summer afternoon. i can't believe that we are going into our final weekend of july. there's lower manhattan, a few puffy clouds over the brooklyn bridge. we're at 83 degrees. a northeast wind around, and the high at 83. a nice recovery after the morning rainfall.

91 in poughkeepsie. only light rainfall amounts there. got the sunshine back earlier, and we have really been heating up. most areas in the upper 70s to mid-80s right now. an isolated shower through the early evening hours. just patchy clouds. you may have a little bit of patchy fog early, especially away from the city. we'll have partly sunny skies through early afternoon, and clouds tend to increase. looking for sunshine at the beach, plan on early afternoon and the clouds tend to filter the sunshine later in the day. there's an area of showers. now all of a sudden just as route i-84 right there, you can see they are starting to weaken through orange and sussex county. i'm not sure they'll survive in new york city. better chance they drift into northern new jersey. a few light showers into putnam, and rockland. the thing is even though this area of rainfall, there is this front snaking around to the south. what's happening is areas of low pressure riding along it. there's one right there. it's going to work along the front end approach tomorrow afternoon.

where things are quiet, and thunderstorms likely to come in. best chance in the western suburbs and at night, have the umbrellas handy, scattered showers and thunderstorms into sunday morning. and sunday mid-day and afternoon may improve but not clear up. sunday is not a wash out, but a best chance of showers would be early than just mostly cloudy skies and a widely scattered shower for the rest of the afternoon. looking at the future cast, we have that isolated shower this evening and patchy clouds overnight. the majority of friday night are thickening in the afternoon. showers, especially west of new york city, but by late day and evening, i think you're going to be fine in connecticut and long island, and have a dry day. tomorrow night into sunday morning, showers and thunderstorms, maybe even a gusty thunderstorm that leaves the scene in the morning and clouds try to break up during the afternoon. i can't promise that but i can tell you we're not going to have widespread showers in the afternoon hours. that's a different story than earlier in the weekend, showers at any time midday and

an unlicensed driver who police say caused a deadly car accident in suffolk county is facing charges. 33-year-old wilson nieves slammed into a car backing out of a driveway in brent. 52-year-old maria alfara was killed. another passenger was treated for nonlife threatening injuries. six workers are facing criminal charges over the flint water crisis. michigan's attorney general charged the workers with misconduct and other crimes stemming from the lead contaminated water crisis. the employees are accused of hiding information and manipulating reports that would have indicated lead levels were unsafe. also, new sketches have been released of two men who pulled off a jewelry heist in new jersey.

a gun to the co-owner's head before tieing her up. they made off with about 200 to 300 pieces of jewelry. the owners say the stolen items are worth tens of thousands of dollars. emergency crews came to the rescue of a man who fell off his jet see. police say the 21-year-old man was in rariton bay when his jet see capsized and he was wearing a life vest and had his cell phone. 911 for help. he guided the air and sea rescue helicopter to his location. rescue crews lowered a basket and dispatched two divers to pull the man to safety. he was taken to the hospital for observation. we'll hear the live 911 call for help coming up at six. they sued the nypd after a police officer did not perform cpr and their daughter died after having an asthma attack. the new decision from the

a mother sharing her heart ache, grieving her young daughter who died after having an asthma attack. tonight she got more painful news. a judge threw out a lawsuit the family had filed against the city after an nypd officer did not give that 11-year-old girl

her child's life. eyewitness news reporter, mallory hoff is live with what the family hopes to have happen next. mallory. >> rob, that mother was pulled over in this area back in 2010. she says at that point, her 11- year-old daughter was clinging to life when she saw that officer she said she hoped that help had arrived. >> she was a brilliant child. she was an honor roll student. >> reporter: brianna ohada was after having an asthma attack. her mother was attempt to go rush her from a playground to the hospital when she was stopped were driving the wrong way on a one way street. at that time she says nypd officer alfonso mendez did not provide cpr. >> he said to me, i don't do cpr. i don't know cpr, and i don't do cpr, so at that moment, it was like so what do you know. he told me to call 911. i mean, you are 911, you're

two blocks away that i can see. >> ultimately he drove behind her to the hospital, almost six years later, a lawsuit filed by the family against both the city and the officer has been dismissed. court documents state the officer said in a deposition i didn't feel safe putting my hands on someone without actually knowing what i was doing. the family's attorney says the decision by a brooklyn judge was based on the fact that there is not an nypd policy >> her case has provided strong evidence that the nypd has failed to provide officers with the training necessary to ensure that officers can protect and serve all new yorkers. >> reporter: the nypd says all members are trained on cpr while in the police academy, and year to date, over 5000 members of the nypd have been trained in blast, basic life support and trauma treatment which includes cpr, and the family attorney tells me he's

several school safe a camp counselor who collapsed at a school in brooklyn. the 20-year-old woman collapsed in front of kids inside a public school auditorium in brighten beach. two school safety agents immediately administered cpr and used a defibrillator. another counselor also jumped in to help. >> at first she wasn't breathing. toward the end she started

from team usa to the junior olympics, three young sisters who live in a homeless shelter have managed to race their way into the competition which is underway in houston. they hope it will put them on the path to a better life. bye. come on, get away. >> reporter: five days a week, rain or shine, the shepherd sisters lace up their spines and hit the track. they have only been running for a year and a half, but they already are competing in the junior olympics. where they're going is even more remarkable considering where they come from. >> well, i live in a shelter. it's horrible. it's infested. it's unsanitary.

and was all by himself until an nypd helicopter swooped in and rescued him. and a man beaten and left in a coma after a fender bender. >> i'm liz cho. bill is off tonight. the victim is a 68-year-old man who tonight is in critical condition. his sister a school safety agent who has been suspended for allegedly lying about what happened. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim is at the hospital on the west se. at the hospital where he has been in a coma for a week. at best his family says if he survives this, he will be paralyzed. this started with a fender bender turned into road rage, and the alleged assailant's sister, an nypd safety officer accused of trying to cover it up.

with a fractured skull and bleeding brain. >> he's going to be in a vegetable state where he's not going to be able to speak or talk or make sense of the world. >> reporter: his son wants to remain anonymous, fearing retaliation. prosecutors say the man who put his father in the hospital, 44- year-old clayman anderson. this is dash cam video. it didn't capture the assault. it captured the moment of the argument. it happened around noon last friday on calledden street in plusing. he was on the ground bleeding and unconscious when cops arrived. anderson has previous arrests for drugs, grand larceny and robbery. his sister, robin anderson scott, an nypd safety officer who was in the car when the incident occurred has been suspended by the nypd for trying to cover up the she and her brother told cops he accidentally fell and hit his head on the ground.
