moments after a struggle with an officer ended with police shooting the suspect. the police first alerted to the break-in thanks to the owner and her nanny cam. >> eyewitness news reporter jim dolan is in queens with new details about the suspect. >> this woman has one of those apps on her phone that's hooked up to a camera, lets her see what's going on inside her apartment. she saw the burglary in progress. she called 911. she wasn't worried about cash or jewelry or a big screen tv. she was w her dog. and she may have risked her life to save that dog. >> reporter: police surrounded the house on 66th street in maspeth today, guns drawn, a tense and dangerous situation, and in to all that, watch this. the woman with the gold purse starts calling for her dog, lisa. >> lisa! lisa! >> reporter: knowing there are police with guns drawn inside, she goes in anyway to get her

out. because moments later -- >> [ screaming ] [ gunshots ] >> reporter: you see the suspect run out but he was shot in the groin. he didn't get far. >> they went in and then i heard what sounded like a shot and the person apparently who was robbing the apartment ran out and ran up hall avenue. >> reporter: that's where police found 37-year-old felix perez of brooklyn, a career four burglary convictions on his record. police believe he's responsible for a string of them in maspeth over the last month or so as well. police later talked about what happened inside that house. >> one officer encountered a male suspect in the room. a struggle ensued. one shot was discarded, discharged by the officer's service weapon. this was a close quarters encounter. these two fought at one point near the rear of the apartment.

went for it. >> she didn't even think about it. she just went for it, her friend said. the suspect has a lengthy criminal record. he just got out of prison in june after three and a half years for burglary. reporting live from maspeth, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. an eyewitness news exclusive, dramatic new video shows a tractor-trailer on a wild and deadly ride, losing at the wheel of the truck, a man with 55 arrests. eyewitness news reporter cefaan kim in elizabeth with the exclusive new video. >> police say this all started about two miles that way with the hit-and-run. that driver was shot several times by cops before the head-on collision. it ended here when the truck slammed in to the building and now we have exclusive video

is exclusive video obtained by eyewitness news showing the end of a deadly rampage caused by a speeding tractor-trailer. watch the video again as the truck slams in to parked cars on newark avenue then in to a building. the damage seen on this video, a fraction of destruction the tractor-trailer caused in elizabeth earlier this month. cops say the man behind the wheel, 57-year-old danny clyde williams. >> he has over 54 arrests, many of which inclu or alcohol. eight felony convictions. >> reporter: williams is accused of killing jeffrey oakley. prosecutors say before the deadly crash, williams struck another vehicle then took off. moments later an off duty cop saw him swerving, tried stopping him, even fired a shot at him. police say williams kept going, struck several more cars, drove through a police barricade where cops opened fire. they hit him several times. and that's all before the

friends riding with him. steven owens, one of those friends. >> i want to bring him back and i want him to get better. >> back here live, a memorial for jeffrey oakley killed in the crash. williams pled not guilty in court. he was charged with aggravated manslaughter among other charges. if convicted, he could spend up to 40 years in prison. reporting live in elizabeth, cefaan kim, channel 7 e a hit-and-run driver to turn himself in from the family of one of the men killed by a car in brooklyn. they were killed by a car overnight in the cypress hills section. surveillance video captured the moments before and after the horrible crash. police say the driver hit the two men along with two parked cars before he took off on foot. time for accuweather. i'm meteorologist lee goldberg. fortunate to avoid the flooding rains today. a flood watch goes till 6:00 in

we've watched a few downpours flare up over sullivan, ulster. most of us, cloudy couple sprinkles. right now, cloudy skies. 73 in new york city. as we head in to the morning hours, looking about 70 degrees. could be a couple showers. a couple flooding downpours across the area. look to a warmer end of the week. your weekend accuweather forecast never too early for that. 7-day accuweather in just a few minutes. the new york city health the cdc and issuing a travel advisory for parts of southern florida due to the zika virus. the warning is for a one-square-mile area in miami, the winwood neighborhood. 14 cases of zika virus have been confirmed there. the patients apparently got the virus from mosquitos in that area. pregnant women are being told to avoid the area and anyone who has visited the neighborhood since mid-june should tested. abc news' dr. richard besser is in miami and he says you should

miami won't be the only cluster of zika we see. there's so much travel between new york, between the whole united states and places where zika is transmitting. those people who come back become the potential source for local transmission in place where's the mosquito exists. >> and congress recently took off for a seven-week vacation without approving emergency zika funding that president obama requested months ago. meanwhile, researchers say they are one step closer to creating a zika vaccine. trials is already underway. in the wake of the democratic convention, hillary clinton finds herself retaking the lead over donald trump in the race for the white house. a new cnn poll shows clinton at 52%, trump at 43%. clinton now has support of 50% of independent voters. that's up 13 points since just last weekend. trump's ongoing feud with the

the gop nominee has been harshly criticized for publically tangling with muslim gold star parents whose son was killed in action in iraq in 2004. tonight trump refusing to apologize or even drop the fight. >> horrible things were said about me. i think it was frankly very tough so all i did was respond and i will always respond. >> mccain releasing statements today, denouncing trump's comments about the kahns. billionaire warren buffett joined clinton on the campaign trail in nebraska tonight. the two led a rally at a high school in omaha. buffet offered a challenge to trump to release his tax returns. buffet saying if he did, he'd then release his. so far no comment from trump. over the weekend, billionaire mark cuban campaigned amongst clinton as well. authorities questioning why

pilots after the deadliest hot air balloon accident in u.s. history. records show alfred skip nichols was able to keep flying balloons despite having four drunk driving convictions and two stints in prison. saturday the balloon he was piloting when it went up in flames and fell to the ground in texas, killing all 16 people onboard. >> balloon pilots are not required to have a medical certificate. so that goes back i think to the of commercial balloon operators. should they be held to a different standard than somebody who is flying an airplane for hire? >> a former girlfriend says nichols has been sober for several years. meanwhile, investigators have learned the top vent of the balloon was open to release air and the pilot signaled he was landing before crashing in to

murder case. jose ramos was once suspected of killing the boy. pedro hernandez charged in 2012 with etan's murder. hernandez faces a retrial this fall after the jury deadlocked on the first trial. ramos remains in prison for an unrelated case. police on long island are trying to figure out who torched trucks used by a tree service and why. four trucks belonging to anderson's tree service in islip were destroyed when they went up in flames today. police are now looking at at least one culprit accidentally lighting his own arm on fire as he doused a truck with gasoline. happening tomorrow, the start of maintenance work in the queens midtown tunnel and it could cause delays for you. one queens-bound lane will be closed for maintenance work. that will continue throughout the week. the closure will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day, tomorrow through friday. frightening moments at

the pearl river area. to thieves, it was millions of dollars worth of loot. to a victim, it was a precious memory of her parents' love stolen. their wedding ring. and money she meant to leave for her kids one day after two banks were hit. cops say the three suspects arrested broke in to the banks through the ceiling. here's carolina leid. >> first i got angry. then i cried thinking of the to it. >> reporter: joyce talking about the things that can't be replaced. their value not counted in dollars, rather, in memory. >> i had actually my mother's engagement, wedding ring, dinner ring, my father's pocket watch, the other grandfather's gold chain, my wedding ring, engagement ring. >> reporter: the list of valuables goes on and includes

children and grandchildren. mcdonough is one of many victims who had valuables stolen in the safety deposit boxes from a bank in borough park, brooklyn. >> you're under the impression that you're renting a safe deposit box in a safe place. i could have lost it in a shoebox or whatever the expression, i could have put it under the mattress. >> reporter: police say three men took a blow torch to the banks and made off with more than $5 million in cash and goods. michael krista dulu had government bonds, expensive watches, documents and family heirlooms in his safe deposit box in queens. fortunately his was not stolen. >> i'm lucky i have my belongings and i have them at home now. >> reporter: mcdonough and other victims submitted a detailed list of what was stolen.

emergency has been declared in the area as firefighters continue to try to gain control of the spreading flames dubbed the roaring lion fire in montana. it's still not yet clear how many homes have been destroyed. the fire started yesterday, quickly forcing area residents to flee their homes. >> fire is out west and floods in the east. thankfully not for us today. parts of the area saw six inches of rain in parts of ocean county. tonight it's dry air but cloudy. empire state building was in earlier now, all in pinstripes. laura behnke will have highlights in just a moment. 73 degrees. humidity to match. it is still rather humid out. easterly wind off the ocean helped suppress any thunderstorms or downpours developed today. pressure right now on the rise. the high today an even 80 degrees. 4 degrees below average. light rainfall amounts at least today. as we finish said off the last week of july had over 3 inches of rainfall. isolated slow moving downpours. mainly in our northern suburbs.

drift in to connecticut, maybe long island in the morning. just a spotty shower tomorrow through the afternoon hours. turning comfy and drier midweek. our numbers tonight aren't dropping very much. we're in the low to mid 70s. comfortable around 70, 71 tomorrow morning. some spotty showers and an isolated downpour. brightening as the day goes on. clouds still dominate but later in the day it could turn partly sunny and get in to the upper 70s. there are your downpours not far from kingston, pine plains, ulster and duchess county. to the south, specks of light, light showers here. some of the heavier downpours flare up overnight in to the hudson valley and try to dive down in to connecticut and long island tomorrow morning. that's around 6:00 in the morning. might be a few trouble spots. otherwise most of the area mostly cloudy with a scattered shower. spotty shower in the afternoon hours and an isolated heavier shower. most of us will see light showers or just stay dry.

finally high pressure is cleaning house, driving this front away, lowering our humidity as we go in to wednesday. that's going to be a really beautiful day and even nighter on thursday and in to friday. tropics, this is still not a named storm. it's still invess 97. it will continue its track to southern mexico over the next five or six days. would be earl if it were named. downpour tomorrow morning. about 70. 78 during the day. clouds will break for a little sun. tomorrow night finally no more umbrellas. partly cloudy. 69. here's the 7-day accuweather forecast. 78 tomorrow. on wednesday, this is really looking good. it's not that it's so warm in the middle 80s but we have a lot of sunshine out there. same idea on thursday, 81. then we'll heat things up in to the mid 80s friday. probably upper 80s to start the weekend. might be a passing shower or thunderstorm on saturday. that's not a wash-out by any means. nice and warm.

nypd officials are investigating a romantic gesture that could land some officers in trouble. three officers helped a propose to his girlfriend by pulling over his car and accusing the couple of transporting weapons and drugs. when the man's girlfriend opened the trunk, balloons came pouring out and he got down on one knee. police commissioner bill bratton says the use of departmental vehicles may have been a violation of protocol. >> but it's so romantic. curious bear on the hunt for food caught on camera hitching a ride on a garbage truck.

tonight, shows the brown bear on top of a large garbage truck in los alamos. fortunately the quick thinking driver, see what he's doing? he's backing the truck up next to a tree. he says come on, you know what to do. there you go. it's nice and safe. >> very smart move there. in tonight's health alert, a surprising study finding people with extra body fat may not necessarily have a higher risk attack. researchers in sweden found people with a higher body mass index in their twin did not have an increased risk of heart attack or death. they were more likely to have type 2 diabetes. >> i don't know about that. my heart has been racing a little bit watching the baseball game tonight. >> fun times. doesn't matter what the records are. >> it was a good game. >> yankees-mets, always a good one. it's one of the biggest days in the baseball season and not just because the trade deadline was this afternoon.
