talking hours? >> it could, yes. >> reporter: vetrano was an avid jogger who used to go running with her father, a retired firefighter. but not lately. and he came here and discovered the worst several hours after she went missing last night. >> you could imagine his angst at that point. we found her face down in the ground. we immediately called ems. >> reporter: vetrano, police say, appeared to be strangled, possibly sexually assaulted. everyone knows everyone. >> there's nothing bad you could say about her. she was a sweetheart. she lit up the room when she walked in. she was a beautiful girl. >> reporter: question is, who's responsible? area residents fed up with strangers who linger near this path. now they wonder if a stranger did the unthinkable or if it was someone she knew. >> she has a very high social media profile.

will have to comb through to see if there were any threats, anything said that was inappropriate. >> this is a girl that wound up unfortunately face down in a pit near her home which should have never happened ever. >> we know karina vetrano was texting a friend of hers as she went running last night. police say it was routine stuff. but those texts suddenly stopped. once again, this investigation continues vetrano's family was too distraught to speak to anyone tonight. she's a st. john's university grad. she worked at a nearby bar and restaurant where an evening vigil will take place in her honor. live in howard beach, stacey sager, channel 7 eyewitness news. police in new jersey are looking for the driver who crashed in to a home and took off. surveillance video shows the moment the car slammed in to house. not only was the house damaged

in to the house. the homeowner says about five minutes after the crash the driver backed out of the home and drove off. by the time police arrived, the car was gone. >> i don't know how he left the scene. you could see the skid marks where we're standing and must have spun it up. smelled like smoky. >> fortunately no one inside the home was hurt. garth o'neal cole appeared in court today and pleaded guilty. he's one of four people responsible for the drive-by shooting at a burger king in yonkers last september that killed 23-year-old michael

of this home on route 627 looking for anything that might corroborate a homeowner's story about his encounter with a bear at about 9:00 this morning. >> he stated he came out on the porch to feed his cats. when he came out, he encountered a black bear. he described the bear as between 450 and 500 pounds. he said the bear looked at him and scratched his arm. when it scratched his arm it turned around and ran away. >> so far the environmental protection is saying scratches on the man are not consistent with what would have happened with the bear. the man's wounds are considered minor but we're being told he's being treated for other issues. police would not elaborate. >> right now he's currently still at the hospital and the police department plans on speaking with the individual once they're given access by the facility. >> so even though they're saying right now that the wounds aren't consistent with the bear

>> that's correct. >> he did have injuries to arm. we're trying to verify the injuries to the story he told us but i wouldn't call this a bear attack. >> reporter: even if there was an encounter, the chief says it would be more bear and human startling each other and that's it. fish and wildlife hope to find out if a bear frequents the yard to see if it needs to be moved or if this even happened at all. >> when a lot of our residents are on there was a bear and in fact that's not the case, we'll proceed accordingly. >> there are penalties for filing false reports. they're not calling it that just yet. live in pohatcong, toni yates, channel 7 eyewitness news. a washington, d.c. metro transit police officer in federal custody tonight accused of supporting isis.

frightening landing. all the passenger and crew survived, but a firefighter who was responding to the crash was killed. >> reporter: an explosion right in the middle of a runway in dubai. emirates airlines flight 521 erupting in smoke and flames. the incident coming after a hard landing at dubai international airport. at least one firefighter losing his life while battling the flames. passengers and crew feeling lucky to be alive. >> all the children [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: the boeing 777 traveling from south india to dubai. everything appeared normal just before touchdown. then the hard landing. dubai international. the busiest airport in the middle east shut down for hours.

the 78-year-old did not attend a hearing. he's the last surviving kkk member convicted of murder in the bombing of birmingham 16th street baptist church. meanwhile a suspect under arrest tonight in the murder of two teenagers in a suburb of atlanta, georgia. 20-year-old jeffrey hazelwood faces murder charges in the deaths of henderson and carter davis. their bodies were found behind a grocery store on monday. they were both shot in the head. police say they're not sure of a motive but believe hazelwood acted alone. mayor bill de blasio revealing plans today for the development of a massive new ymca complex in the bronx. the mayor announced his plans for a 50,000 square foot facility to be built in edenwald. it will be built with state-of-the-art features. they'll have a full gym. basketball court, and not one but two swimming pools. two. the facility will offer memberships to people of all income levels.

middle of the day where we can have a shower or thunderstorm. otherwise a warm and humid start to the weekend. that's a little less than about 1800 miles to our west. this is 1500 miles to our south. this is now hurricane earl. you can see the circulation right here and how it's approaching here, eastern coast here belize, belize city right there. there's honduras and guatemala. category 1 hurricane with winds of 75 miles per hour. moving off to the west at 14 miles per hour. to be critical whether the center goes just to the south of belize center or to the north. because remember the strongest winds are in the northeast quarter so we'll have to see. going to be a very, very close call. meanwhile it will travel through the yucatan and maybe southern mexico. if it goes over the gulf of mexico it can go back to tropical storm status. i think as we go in to late thursday night, friday, it becomes a depression. for us, closer to home, it's

the latest for you on the zika virus. in an effort to fight mosquitos, new york city health officials are spraying pesticides over the next several days. they're targeting three boroughs. queens, staten island, and the bronx. meanwhile down in florida, health officials are struggling to contain the zika threat. the number of cases in the miami area now stands at 15. officials are preparing to start aerial spraying in an effort to kill mosquitos around that the continental u.s.'s first known cases of zika transmitted by mosquitos were confirmed last week. scammers have been swarming new york with dubious zika prevention methods. eyewitness news reporter kemberly richardson has the story. >> what do you think this is for? >> looks like pokemon nonsense. >> reporter: not exactly, but officials say buying these colorful stickers, these

money. >> whenever you have a crisis and people are anxious, that's an opportunity for fraudsters. that's an opportunity for scammers. they take advantage of people's anxiety and desperation. >> reporter: new york attorney general eric snyderman is now going after seven companies, just issued cease and desist letters to the businesses, which he says are giving the public a false sense of security, claiming these items prevent and protect you from getting the zika virus. the items include ultrasonic claim to repel mosquitos, as well as wristbands that contain botanical-based oils. >> it's not like these guys are making hundreds of millions of dollars. we just want to shut them down and stop it. if people persist then we'll go after them for damages. >> officials say these products are sold online in discount stores and bodegas. look for anything in spray form

hurdles with the town board. nassau county sold the five-acre site to sloan kettering for $6 and a half million last year. police arrest a man accused of robbing a bank while decked out in a wild wardrobe. 24-year-old jordan wise turned himself in to police this week. he told investigators he held up the bank in stapleton last monday with a water gun and took off with $780 in cash. he wore a formal dress, and high heels to pull off the crime. a key piece of evidence is now missing in connection with the wrongful death case of 60 minutes correspondent bob simon. simon was killed in a car crash on the west side 2015. investigators now say the back seat of the lincoln towncar that simon was sitting on in the crash has disappeared. after a unilateral inspection of the car was conducted by the defendant, skyline credit ride. the family is suing the company

had his license suspended nine times. tonight the cause of a massive fire at a supermarket in queens is still a mystery. flames broke out last night about 9:00 at the strawberry farm supermarket in white stone. it took crews five hours to get it under control. four firefighters were hurt battling it. their injuries were minor. officials are now checking the stability of that building. more than 300 people will be out of work when new york city's last milk processing plant shuts of elmhurst dairy in queens made the announcement today. he says after nearly a century in business, he's forced to shut down at the end of october because of a major drop in demand. one worker says 16 years with the company, he's sad to see it go. >> no bad memories. the company was able to put food on my table, roof over my head. the old cliches. no bad memories at all.

to turn the property in to another type of business so he can give his employees a flew place to work. home delivery is about to take a big leap in to the future. the white house says google will soon start testing drones that can deliver goods to your doorstep. the announcement is part of a larger drone initiative by the white house, office of science and technology policy. the faa has also said it hopes to allow drones to fly over people by the end of the year. amazon recently announced it will soon start testing drone china is testing an elevated bus that actually drives right over other vehicles on the road. here's a look at the prototype model and animation of how it works. the transit elevated bus is about 70 feet long and can carry up to 300 passengers. runs on electricity and solar power. each one could replace 40 standard buses, going a long way to ease traffic congestion and

hour in some spots. a flooded underpass of a major freeway was forced closed causing a nightmare for the evening commute. heavy rain is typical during monsoon season. wind patterns shift every summer and draw moisture from the pacific ocean to the southwest. a sign spoof with words of love in buffalo and that sent mixed messages to drivers. a prankster accessed the keyboard on a sign along a busy roadway in a buffalo park on monday and the prankster changed it's all a dream. and the same sign on tuesday flashed, i love you. before crews shut it down. state police say tampering with road signs is illegal and potentially dangerous because it can distract drivers. but others said hey, the sign made me feel good. somebody loves me. >> in the midst of everything going on, one good thing we can let slide. >> i think it's pretty funny. i think it's harmless fun. i think these days people take things a little too seriously.

a water main break caused a giant sinkhole to open and swallow a car in the streets of albany. it was up to 15 feet deep. the medical student who owns that suv says he's trying to during the incident. but with an exam coming up in a few days, this obviously adds a bit to his stress right now. whinny the poo and friends are celebrating the return to the new york library. their original toys are looking fresh after a year of much needed repairs. they went back on display today. an english boy christopher robin mill was the original owner.

justice years in the making. today a man wrongly convicted of raping a teenager nearly three decades ago is cleared after a dna test exonerated him. first, police search for clues to find a killer. a 30-year-old woman out for her daily jog is murdered in queens. good evening at 6:00. i'm liz cho. bill is off tonight. police right autopsy results. they say karina vetrano was possibly strangled and may have been sexually assaulted. vetrano was last seen jogging just about 24 hours ago. her body was discovered late last night by her father off the jogging path near 161st avenue and 78th street in howard beach. eyewitness news reporter rob nelson is in the neighborhood where a vigil is planned for
