answers. >> first, breaking news. a huge fire burning now in a woodworking factory in queens. more than 100 firefighters on the scene battling the flames and people living nearby, being warned about all the smoke from this fire. >> eyewitness news reporter jim dolan is live on the scene in sunnyside. >> this thing started about 7:30 tonight. take a look down the street. it's still going strong right now at 11:00 at night. chemicals. they've surrounded it now but it is still going and it was one big blaze. >> reporter: it was enormous. a churning, devouring fire that danced and weaved its way around the rooftops and defied an ocean of water dumped on it by firefighters. how hot was it? tim was on the 7 train. >> you could feel the heat through the window coming in to queens. i was on the train. i called my fianci. >> you could feel the heat of the fire?

it was blazing pretty good. >> it was actually a really, really big fire. and it's really a lot of smoke. >> reporter: nobody inside was smoke but some firefighters were. it appears to have started inside a millwork plant so there was lots of lumber and there were plenty of chemicals inside. >> large amounts of wood combustibles in there and large amounts of lacquers, thinners, paint in there that definitely contributed to it. >> it was a really bad smell. >> they asked me to get out of here. >> reporter: mike was at his body shop when police told him to get out. >> leave the gates open and cross the street. i told him i have 20 cars in there, you know? 20 cars, can i move them out? he's like no, just leave it. >> reporter: like a lot of people, he watched the fire spread. >> got me nervous. nervous. >> nervous because of the fumes? >> nerves because i had 20 cars in there. >> and they're still there.

they think this is going to go through the night. they're bussing firefighters in so they can bring them in. still not under control at 11:00 at night, and it will be a while before it is. two firefighters suffered minor injuries. reporting live from sunnyside, jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. developing news now. police are on the scene of a deadly knife attack in london and they're not ruling out terrorism as a possible motive. police say one person was killed, 5 others stabbing spree in london's russell square close to the british museum. one suspect is under arrest. we're learning more about a woman from queens attacked and murdered while out for a jog. tonight hundreds of people came to a vigil for karina vetrano. the question of who and why is still a mystery.

was going on tonight, police worked throughout the neighborhood posting these fliers, hoping to get some tips that will lead them to karina's killer. friends say it was hard to miss 30-year-old karina vetrano. her striking looks obvious to strangers but friends say her vivacious important is what really made her stand out. >> really smart girl. she was very well spoken, very witty person. fun person to around. >> reporter: albert fuentes first met her in preschool. they shared hugs at a vigil at the restaurant where she worked. all trying to cope with this devastating loss. >> it's a terrible tragedy. i don't know what else to say. it's frightening because i go bike riding every day. >> my heart goes out to the vetranos. my heart goes out to the neighborhood. because we are howard beach. >> reporter: investigators say vetrano was strangled and

sexually assaulted. she went for a jog tuesday evening around 5:00. her father became worried two hours later when she didn't return to their howard beach home. so he quickly called police. karina's body was found that night along a path at spring creek park about 14 blocks away from her 84th street home. >> i hope they catch the animal that did it. this happened in our own backyard, our neighborhood. the neighborhood is tight. and the whole community is going come together right now. >> karina would normally run with her father, but that night he could not. he was not feeling well. several people in the neighborhood were asking why she ran alone in that area. other neighbors pointed out it's something that many people do because they believed that it was safe there. reporting live in howard beach, i'm carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. new at 11:00, a suspect shot

in court. police say a woman monitoring a nanny cam from her office noticed felix perez in her home in maspeth monday and called 911. during a struggle with police, perez was shot in the groin. cell phone video shows him running away but police caught up with him. tonight in court his attorney claims the shooting was unjustified. >> you don't who's unarmed. you just don't. there's other ways of doing it. you don't shoot somebody in the groin. >> reporter: perez was released hospital earlier today. an arrest tonight in a shooting that injured a 4-year-old bystander. yonkers police say 19-year-old floyd bruce opened fire on willow street on july 16th. a bullet hit a 4-year-old girl in her leg as she walked to the store with her mother. police say bruce was also involved in an unrelated armed robbery 10 days later. time for accuweather. i'm meteorologist lee goldberg. hurricane earl just a few hours

man in a car was stopped by police on the harrison side of the river. he fled and took off running across the bridge street bridge. suddenly they say he jumped in to the passaic river to avoid capture. he then was holding on to a support on the under side of the bridge. >> do you think he jumped in the river, this bad river? >> hey, man, it's dirty jersey. people do crazy things to survive. it is what it is. >> they couldn't find him anywhere? >> they >> reporter: as newark police and fire put a boat in to water, the man jumped back in to the river and was seen swimming to a large storm drain on the bank and walked inside. newscopter7 capturing this video as equipment was sent in to manhole covers in hopes of finding the suspect. the search was suspended tonight but will resume tomorrow. however, police say with high tide this could turn from a search to a recovery effort.

new video tonight of the panic inside a jumbo jet seconds before a massive explosion ripped it apart. cell phone video shows how passengers scramble to escape the emirates airplane seconds after it skidded down the runway. dubai international airport and broke off a huge ball of flames erupted from the plane. a firefighter was later killed in that explosion. the cause still under investigation but aviation officials say the landing gear may not have been deployed properly. new tonight, the u.s. supreme court ruling that a school can block a transgender teen from using the boy's bathroom when classes begin next month. in a 5-3 decision, the justices put on hold a lower court ruling
