details leading towards karina's killer. friends, family, and complete strangers gathered at this funeral home for the wake of 30- year-old, karina verano. a gam et of emotions and heartbreak. >> i think she was a beautiful person. beautiful. >> to devastation and anger. >> who wants to come, but you have no choice, we have to stick together and hopefully we find him. >> investigators will carefully spring creek park. sources say that work led them to valuable evidence, likely belonging to the victim. right now being tested for dna. her father found her body with police along an unpaved path. she was strangled and sexually assaulted. >> this woman put up a ferocious fight. right until the end.

severely, suggest she put up a big fight. >> neighbors and friends at tonight's wake did their best to console her parents. >> i said to the father, i don't know what to say. for the first time in my life, i have nothing to say. >> reporter: and the wake here ended at 9:00 tonight. but there are still people, just about an hour ago leaving this funeral home. her funeral is scheduled for tomorrow. reporting live in ozone park, i'm carolina lead, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> th police say a taxi driver out to hurt someone went before a judge today after he intentionally ran down a woman in manhattan. the driver hit a woman on 6th avenue in chelsea back on july 27. the woman was crossing the street when the cab ran a red light. she was pinned between the cab and another car. fortunately, she only suffered minor injuries. the prosecutors say the driver just wanted to take aim at someone with his taxi.

motorcyclist. state police say kenny martinez of shirley uploaded several videos showing his rogue, off road riding. officers say he led them on chases over the years. then, one officer discovered video online of a chase he had been involved in. now, martinez faces several charges, including unlawful fleeing from police. right now, the search is on for a hit-and-run driver who pedestrian into the bronx. standing in the supermarket parking lot when the truck slammed right into him. eyewitness news with new information from witnesses. >> reporter: it's just six seconds of video, but the act is clear as day. you can see the red pickup truck cruising through a parking lot and sideswiping a white van. hidden from your view, the van's owner was standing beside

not stop. >> when i heard about this, it was shocking to me. i can't believe it. i just can't believe it. >> friends and family of victim spent the day struggling to understand why anyone would leave him for dead. it happened at 5:00 p.m. tuesday outside this fine fair supermarket in the section. where cops today were back at the scene after releasing the video in an attempt to find the driver. >> i don't know who does that, but if he's going that fast, he did something wrong. >> this man's friend dove out of th as the truck picked up speed to flee. >> he thought he was going to be the next victim. >> the victim is a very lucky man. he's being treated here where cops expect him to recover. they also expect to catch the person who did this to him, but they may need your help in finding that driver. we placed the video on abc7ny. if you want to take another look, if you recognize that pickup truck, you should call

eyewitness news. >> thank you. a mother questioned by police tonight in the death of her 15 month old girl. officers responded to a 911 call today at a home in mt. vernon. when they arrived, they found the lifeless toddler in a bedroom with trauma to her face. she was returned rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. officials tell eyewitness news that an arrest is imminent. because of a storm threat forecast from meteorologist, lee goldberg. >> you can feel it in the air. we had a warmer day today, closer to average. now the humidity has been climbing through the overnight. partly cloudy skies, nice evening, 76 degrees. pretty good breeze out of the south, southwest. some clouds are coming in. look at the showers off to the west and down to the south. don't be surprised to see a shower first thing tomorrow morning, clouds and hazy sunshine, a spot shower, a better chance off to the north

main show. the steadier line of showers, you can see the first ones around sunrise. there's the line of showers with the cold front and that starts to get into our northwest suburbs during the late morning hours and probably approaches new york city during the lunch hour. waiting for the future cast to update. we'll have that. some good news with the trend. it might be more of a broken line than a solid line of showers. nothing to cancel plans. just some interruptions. sade, back to you for now. video released in the deadly shooting of a teenager in chicago. an independent police review board releasing that footage today. the video shows an officer shooting at an allegedly stolen car after the driver hit a squad car. the video goes on to show officers chasing the driver, 18- year-old, paul o'neil, through a yard and then o neil lying on the ground. the video does not show the

was really hurt. it was disturbing. very disturbing. not the way anything is supposed to be done. >> the three police officers involved in the shooting have been removed frd duty pending an investigation. a heavily armed security forces in brazil stopped protesters from reaching the site of the opening ceremony for the rio application. riot police intervened at the protest against the protesters and used tear gas to dispurse the demonstrators. there have been consistent small protests in brazil in the run up to the olympics. a bruising week for donald trump. now he tries to play nice, at least with the republicans. in an about face, trump is now endorsing house speaker, paul ryan, who faces a primary challenger in this wisconsin congressional district. trump read a statement about ryan at a rally in green bay. he also finally threw his

senator, john mccain. meanwhile, hillary clinton getting more good news today in the form of new polls. the latest poll shows clinton leading trump 48-33 percent. in that survey of more than 1100 people, clinton gained support among whites and men. and one poll from georgia shows she has the lead there as well, despite it being a red state. a new york city attorney may need a lawyer after being accused of robbing a bank in connecticut. mcsherry gave a note to a bank teller, allegedly demanded money and said she was armed. she didn't get far before police arrested her minutes later when she fled the scene yesterday afternoon. she's being held on $250,000 bond. new at 11:00, getting parking meters. neighbors and business owners are ticked because now they have to pay to park. the concession that could cool down hot tempers.

new at 11:00, a stiffed out of the free parking on its streets when the city added more meters. but just as a backlash to the move started to pick up speed, the city offered a compromise to help put the brakes on the growing frustration there. here is stefan kim. >> reporter: residents living on 3rd and 4th avenues, this is an all too common sight. cars lined up down the block, double parked. >> it's terrible here. >> that's why these meters have

going up, the blood pressure. >> that's it. >> the meters were requested by local merchants who complain without them, residents occupy spots for a week at a time. so meters mean more turnover. >> customers have a problem, they don't know how to park. they take a chance at times. sometimes they get a ticket. >> but community leaders say d.o.t. made the changes without local input. a unique problem. >> of the half a dozen blocks that got metered parking, all of those spots on the ground level. except for these three spots, which have only homes. pat lives in front of one of these spots. >> to come home at 8:00 and look for a spot, you're driving around for an hour. an hour. >> i think when they are in front of residential properties, it becomes a bit of an issue for the residents who

good news, d.o.t. appears to be ready to correct this blind spot. meanwhile, he's cosponsoring legislation that would require the city to do more than just notify the community of changes like this. >> this bill would require them to have a discussion with us about the meters before decision is made to put them in. >> officials hope that will help cool some tempers, but this is new york, when it comes to parking, you won't make everyone happy. in ridge, stefan kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. a boy keeps his cool as a man breaks into his house during a scary home invasion. responded to the doorbell rubbing his eyes after just waking up. the man asked if he was alone and he said yes. three hours later, as you can see, a truck drove up on the grass and a man tried breaking in the back door. the man ran away when he heard noise inside. he hid in a closet until police

was still there. the feeling of a subway tubal collapses, sending commuters diving for cover. it happened without warning in shanghai. three people just missed getting seriously hurt as the ceiling tiles rained down all around them. fortunately, no one was hurt. engineers said dense humidity and strong winds contributed to the collapse. repairs are underway. a police officer speaking after setting a gas station on fire. surveillance video captured the dramatic event in miami. a man tried setting fire to an 8,000 gallon underground storage tank. the officer hit the emergency shutoff to the gas pumps, then confronted the man all the while unsure if the tanks would explode. >> it would have been a massive chaos. they would have thought it was terrorism, who knows. they wouldn't be able to talk

the death and only one person was going to walk away from that. >> wow. the suspect stabbed the officer about a dozen times with a knife and a screwdriver before the officer fatally shot the man. a fellow officer found him bleeding on the ground and rushed him to the hospital. and terrifying video shows a woman rummaging through a home in oregon while the family that lived there was sound asleep. the homeowners woke up one ransacked. when they checked their security video, that's when they saw a woman in face paint going through their home all while eight people slept. authorities arrested a 24-year- old woman and charged her with particularly burglary and drug possession. >> weekend closures on the fdr drive. being closed from 61st street

there will also be closures on sunday and monday during the overnight hours. and path riders will face a complete shutdown of the 33 street line starting at midnight. service will not resume until monday at 5:00 a.m. workers will be upgrading the signal system work that will continue on weekends through december. path is adding service to the world trade center. >> here's something for you to do. happening tomorrow, the summer street program returns from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. no cars will be allowed on park avenue to central park. the stretch of road will be packed with activities like a water slide. that's fun, a zip line, and a dog park. some streets run for three saturdays in a row. >> 7 to 1. while there might be an early shower around 7:00, and another line approaching around 1:00. the bulk should be pretty good. our streets are dry right now, it's warm, it's increasingly humid.

i think a couple showers can sneak into the region tomorrow morning early. just a small chance for that. the main event is that line coming off from the west. there is a small chance of some storms could get gusty with downpours and frequent lightning, but again, that would be widely scattered. broken line of storms. here's the future cast. tomorrow morning, an isolated shower. the future cast -- as you go into the late morning, thunderstorms are getting into the catskills. line approaches new york earlier, it i think it's that early time period for new york city and probably east of new york city by about 4:30. after that, watching long island and on the shore, 5:00, 6:00, and then offshore after that. we have the thunder threat tomorrow. the windows noon to 5:00. breezy, beautiful on sunday. get back to the weather we've had much of the week, which is low humidity. boaters, southwest winds, water temperatures nice and warm. watch out for the rip current risk which will diminish as we go into sunday.
