now, new york's number one channel news. >> hot, humid, and dangerous. extreme heat and powerful storms, lightning sends people to the hospital while power concerns have some folks being told to conserve. good evening at 11:00, i'm sade bederinwa. >> and i'm joe torres. night fall hasn't brought much relief from the heat. tomorrow is going to be another scorcher. summer storms today sent five people to the hospital. critical condition after lightning struck a park. >> and take a look at the clouds over yankee stadium before tonight's game. ominous indeed. these storms and hot temperatures are putting quite a strain on the power grid. power has been reduced in some neighborhoods tonight. >> we have several reports. we begin with meteorologist, jeff goldberg. he's on the upper west side. >> is this heat and humidity at

mid afternoon temperature. check out temperatures right now, 84 degrees and it's almost midnight, and we'll be lucky if we go below 80. you combine that with humidity, and it feels like, even at this hour, nearly 90 degrees in central park. it still feels like 93 at laguardia. it got up to 93 for an actual high temperature in new york city. you don't see that too often. an excessive heat warning, all weekend, right through sunday at 10:00 p.m. and where you don't have an excessive heat wa advisory over eastern parts of long island. even going right down to the coast, you don't get much in the way of relief. along with the heat and humidity, which is florida- like. you are getting big thunderstorms that develop during the afternoon. those have since weakened. we have one little batch moving through parts of orange county, moving into dutches, also another batch moving into western parts of sullivan county. caused some damage. lightning, look at the tremendous amount of lightning

so, barely going below 80 tonight for a low. and back up into the mid 90s. so at least as warm as it was today for tomorrow's heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees. is there any relief in sight? we'll talk about that in your full accuweather forecast coming up. >> the fact the danger of that powerful thunderstorm you talked about proved life threatening for five people in dutches county. lightning struck a tree in park. the powerful bolt shocked five people. critical condition tonight. eyewitness news reporter, a.j. ross spoke to the family of one of the victims. >> they thought they would find refuge, but a small group nearly lost their lives. if you take a look, there's not much damage to this tree, but the damage this lightning strike left behind is still being felt with five people still in the hospital. >> multiple patients struck by lightning. mansion square park, 60 north clinton street.

son square park with little time to react. when lightning struck this tree and sent dangerous volts of electricity through these nearby benches and the ground. >> we heard the lightning strike, you know, the ground shook. it was crazy. and we seen people running at the park over here. >> i saw three gentleman on the bench. two leaning against each other. a third leaning against them. young lady was still smoking and smoldering her friend was one of the people shocked while sitting on this bench. >> he got blown off the bench. and his heart stopped. they did cpr for 30 minutes. he's in icu right now. >> she calls the 46-year-old father of three a fighter. but franklin now has some challenges ahead. >> they are going to do some kind of procedure, some kind of heart, lung procedure to find out what kind of damage was

just after 4:00 p.m. friday. they discovered four men and a woman injured. three were taken in critical condition while two others with less serious injuries were taken to mid hudson regional. >> it looked like that was on tv, a terrorism scene. people on the ground, people working on their bodies. >> it's a tragedy, but the thing is, lightning is dangerous and can be a killer. the last place you want to be anywhere, but specifically, in trees. >> this really is a sad thing. >> i'm told the three taken to the medical center are in icu and the two at hudson are in good condition. i'm a.j. ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> this extreme heat is putting a real strain on the power grid. tonight, coned reduced power in these queens neighborhoods and urging people to conserve. the power company reduced voltage by 5% in these staten

the area. eyewitness news reporter is in west brighten staten island where people are trying to keep cool. they are trying, aren't they? >> they sure are, sade. just over 100 customers in this area remain without power. keep in mind, it was ten times that earlier tonight. making this hot and humid day just miserable for so many. >> several neighborhoods on staten island asked to conserve to repair equipment problems. emma's daughter is one of 1500 customers on staten island, who are without power tonight. >> it is a very big problem because betty is on oxygen. and we've had people here all day. they had to bring a generator and that generator worked and another generator came and the fella came to put more gas in it. it's a big problem.

and offduty firefighter rushed to help the victims before rescuers arrived. the driver rushed away. >> it's horrible for you to hit someone and drive off like it's nothing. it's really sad. i hope they do the right thing and come forward, come clean. >> police are looking for a gray dollar van and missing a side mirror. as for the two victims, they were both in critical condition. in the marine park section of eyewitness news. a federal judge overturned the murder conviction of one man profiled in the netflix series, making a murder. brendan dassey had been serving live in prison for a sex assault and murder in wisconsin. the series raised questions about whether his confession was cohearsed. his uncle, steven avery, was the primary focus of making a murder. he is still in prison and continues to appeal his
