power concerns have some folks being told to conserve. good evening at 11:00, i'm sade bederinwa. >> and i'm joe torres. night fall hasn't brought much relief from the heat. tomorrow is going to be another scorcher. summer storms today sent five people to the hospital. three are in critical condition after lightning struck a park. >> and take a look at the clouds over yankee stadium before tonight's game. ominous indeed. these storms and hot temperatures are putting quite a strain on the power grid. power has been reduced in some we begin with meteorologist, jeff goldberg. he's on the upper west side. >> is this heat and humidity at another level. the average high, 83 degrees, that's your average mid afternoon temperature. check out temperatures right now, 84 degrees and it's almost midnight, and we'll be lucky if we go below 80.

hour, nearly 90 degrees in central park. it still feels like 93 at laguardia. it got up to 93 for an actual high temperature in new york city. you don't see that too often. an excessive heat warning, all weekend, right through sunday at 10:00 p.m. and where you don't have an excessive heat warning, you have a heat advisory over eastern parts of long island. even going right down to the coast, you don't get much in the way of relief. along with the heat and humidity, which is florida- like. you are getting big thunderstorms that develop during the afternoo weakened. we have one little batch moving through parts of orange county, moving into dutches, also another batch moving into western parts of sullivan county. caused some damage. lightning, look at the tremendous amount of lightning that was producing around 4:00 this afternoon? so, barely going below 80 tonight for a low. and back up into the mid 90s. so at least as warm as it was today for tomorrow's heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees.

we'll talk about that in your full accuweather forecast coming up. >> the fact the danger of that powerful thunderstorm you talked about proved life threatening for five people in dutches county. lightning struck a tree in park. the powerful bolt shocked five people. three remain in critical condition tonight. eyewitness news reporter, a.j. ross spoke to the family of one of the victims. >> they thought they would find refuge, but a small group nearly lost their lives. if you take a look, there's not the damage this lightning strike left behind is still being felt with five people still in the hospital. >> multiple patients struck by lightning. mansion square park, 60 north clinton street. >> a fast moving and powerful thunderstorm left a small group inman son square park with little time to react. when lightning struck this tree and sent dangerous volts of electricity through these nearby benches and the ground. >> we heard the lightning

shook. it was crazy. and we seen people running at the park over here. >> i saw three gentleman on the bench. two leaning against each other. a third leaning against them. young lady was still smoking and smoldering. >> patricia white says her friend was one of the people shocked while sitting on this bench. >> he got blown off the bench. and his heart stopped. they did cpr for 30 minutes. he's in icu right now. year-old father of three a fighter. but franklin now has some challenges ahead. >> they are going to do some kind of procedure, some kind of heart, lung procedure to find out what kind of damage was done. >> police first started receiving calls about the lightning strike just after 4:00 p.m. friday. they discovered four men and a woman injured. three were taken in critical condition while two others with less serious injuries were

like that was on tv, a terrorism scene. people on the ground, people working on their bodies. >> it's a tragedy, but the thing is, lightning is dangerous and can be a killer. the last place you want to be anywhere, but specifically, in a park with multiple trees is under one of those trees. >> this really is a sad thing. >> i'm told the three taken to the medical center are in icu and the two at hudson are in good condition. i'm ross, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> this extreme heat is putting a real strain on the power grid. tonight, coned reduced power in these queens neighborhoods and urging people to conserve. the power company reduced voltage by 5% in these staten island communities while they work on equipment in the area. eyewitness news reporter is in west brighten staten island where people are trying to keep cool. they are trying, aren't they? >> they sure are, sade.

keep in mind, it was ten times that earlier tonight. making this hot and humid day just miserable for so many. >> several neighborhoods on staten island asked to conserve energy tonight while crews work to repair equipment problems. emma's daughter is one of 1500 customers on staten island, who are without power tonight. >> it is a very big problem because betty is on oxygen. here all day. they had to bring a generator and that generator worked and another generator came and the fella came to put more gas in it. it's a big problem. >> richmond university medical center was forced to run on generators. waiting to be phased back on to the grid. mayor bill de blasio is urging residents to take steps to conserve energy. for example, setting air- conditioning units higher than

behnke. >> nothing about alex rodriguez farewell tour has been normal. the same can be said with a- rod's career. with so much success tainted with the use of performance enhancing drugs. the yankees turn to say good- bye. they honor him. rodriguez was honored by his daughters. the team gave his presents and a tribute video played. the entire time, dark were moving in, and the ceremony cut short by a vicious thunderstorm that chased everyone off the field. but hey, it is the thought that counts. and throughout it all, it seemed like the fans were largely on a-rod's side. anthony johnson outside yankee stadium with more on their point of view. anthony. >> a fantastic night because the yankees did win tonight, a- rod did participate in that win. getting that double early on in

turned out to be a fantastic evening for so many fans that turned out here to yankee stadium this evening. as you said, we had an opportunity to go ahead and talk to a whole lot of them as they came out of the stadium, following the 7th inning. that's when they knew the yankees had the commanding lead. and those fans were ecstatic to be here, to see a-rod and the last game they will play here at yankee stadium. >> a yankee fan, it's almost a game where you come out of of a-rod's caliber. >> a-rod had a good double the first time up. although he didn't do anything after that, the fan was 100% behind him. >> it was great seeing a-rod's last run. >> what was so special about it? >> i got to see him one more time before he retired. >> yes. >> it was a good night. it was a good game. everything was good about it. it's sad to see him go, because i have been coming to the game since the age of 2.

mother. she went out for a jog last sunday and her body found later that day. >> and tonight marks ten days since the murder of a jogger in queens. eyewitness news sat down with the father of kari na. phil revealed his 30-year-old daughter put up a fierce struggle before he was sexually assaulted and he is convinced someone other than the killer knows something. >> somebody saw somebody home with scratches, with a bruise, because karina fought back. there needs to be an arrest. most important thing is an arrest. and we need the public to help with that arrest. >> phil has established a go fund me page that raised more than $200,000 in reward money to help find his daughter's killer. now to vote 2016. in hopes of putting pressure on donald trump, hillary clinton

and former president bill clinton, made $10.6 million last year. they paid a third of that in taxes a the a rate of 34.2%. and almost 10% went to charity, namely, the clinton foundation. clinton is now released 3-9d years worth of tax returns over the course of her career. mean while, she called on trump to release his taxes, which he refused to do. while trump ignored the calls, he spent the day on the campaign trail in pennsylvania trying to explain away controversial comments. he is trying to brush off comments he made calling president obama and hillary clinton the founders of isis. trump says it was nothing more than sarcasm and blaming the media for not understanding that. at the same time, telling the crowd of supporters, he was not that sarcastic, to be honest. new at 11:00, struck as they cross the street. two people hit by a van. that took off coming up on eyewitness news. people talk about the frightening scene and the

new at 11:00, a man and woman are struck by a hit-and- run driver. right now, they are both in critical condition. it happened on flatbush avenue. eyewitness news reporter, josh has more on the search to find the driver. >> cops believe it's a victim in this lot and tried to cross flat bush avenue to get to the kings plaza mall, but they never made it. the hunt f the driver who hit them and left them for dead. tonight, crash investigators from the nypd poured over every inch of this street. >> earlier, a hit-and-run driver plowed into a man and woman with two sickening thuds. >> pretty loud. a big thud. that made me turn around. i jumped. >> oh my god, people lay in the street. they got hit by a car. we ran outside to see what was going on.

trying to cross busy flatbush avenue. they were running against the light and not in a crosswalk. when a gray van with a red stripe barreled into them with such force, it left its side mirror behind as it kept on going. and this picture, you can see first responders tending to both victims. the woman was critically hurt. >> the lady was sprawled out, blood gushing all over the place. >> i am going to see all that. >> it's terrible. i had to turn my head around. samaritans, including a nurse and offduty firefighter rushed to help the victims before rescuers arrived. the driver rushed away. >> it's horrible for you to hit someone and drive off like it's nothing. it's really sad. i hope they do the right thing and come forward, come clean. >> police are looking for a gray dollar van and missing a side mirror. as for the two victims, they were both in critical condition. in the marine park section of

7 eyewitness news. a federal judge overturned the murder conviction of one man profiled in the netflix series, making a murder. brendan dassey had been serving live in prison for a sex assault and murder in wisconsin. the series raised questions about whether his confession was cohearsed. his uncle, steven avery, was the primary focus of making a murder. he is still in prison and continues to appeal his conviction. late night hours providing no relief from the heat and humidity. humidity up at 65%. dew points measure the amount of moisture in the atmosphere when they are above 70. it feels like miami, florida. they are in the upper 70s right now. the wind coming in from the west. got up to 93 today. a full 10 degrees above the norm. 97 was the record back in 1944. pretty close to that. the sunrising tomorrow morning

tom's river got all the way up to 98 degrees. at one point, tom's river had a heat index value of over 110. and an excessive heat warning continues through the weekend. this is dangerous heat. this is the type of weekend where during the afternoon, you'll want to stay in an air- conditioned environment if you can. the hottest locations will feel like 105 to 110 degrees when you take the heat and combine it with the humidity. your heat index values. thunderstorms during the afternoons may bring some relief, but also the so much moisture in the atmosphere of some locally heavy downpours and of course, as we learned earlier, the lightning. just remember that as you head into the weekend. 87 at laguardia airport. we have temperatures falling down into the middle and upper 70s. if you want relief as you head into the suburban areas. the radar is showing another batch of showers, some heavier

orange county. this may approach putnam county during the next 15 to 30 minutes or so. also some showers moving into dutches county. another shower or thunderstorm complex there moving into western parts of sullivan. those will tend to weaken during the next few hours. here's our future cast. 7:00in the morning, temperatures in the low 80s. not a refreshing start to your saturday. getting into the 90s, well into the 90s during the afternoon. here we go. maybe some thunderstorms popping up, especially from the i-95 corridor and points north and we repeat on sunday, check out these heat index values by tomorrow afternoon, getting up to 106. this is what it will feel like when you are stepping out. 111 for heat index at tom's river. if anything sunday, maybe a degree or two cooler in the heat index category. still dangerously hot out there. accuweather forecast overnight, partly cloudy, very warm and sticky. we're down to 78. 82 at 7:00 in the morning. just oppressively humid weather, continuing through tomorrow.
