investigation in elizabeth and alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect for today. ken over to you. heather thank you. 6:02 this morning. a suffolk county man is facing murder charges in his own mother's death. police say he drownedler in their backyard pool in the quiet hamlet of cold spring harbor. eyewitness news reporter diana rocco is live with what police are saying about this crime. diana? >> reporter: ken it is a crime that is hard to imagine. it has certainly rattled this quiet long community this morning. police are saying a beloved mother is dead, killed at the hands of her own son. and this morning, 23-year-old dennis cullen jr. is in police custody hours after 63-year-old elizabeth cullen was found on the family property yesterday afternoon. the victim comes, we've learned, from a military

father were generals. cullen was intentionally drowned in the backyard pool. when police arrived they found her body in the backyard near the pool house. cullen's son was not home at the time but it does appear he contacted a family member to confess the crime. he returned last night immediately arrested. >> police received a call about a possible intentional drowning and found the deceased, later determined to be elizabeth cullen in the backyard. >> reporter: so cullen is now charged with second degree murder. police have not said why cullen killed his mother. they have not yet discovered a motive. this is all still under investigation. diana rocco channel 7 eyewitness news. developing this morning, three olympic swimmers are set to speak with police from rio

robbed at gunpoint. they were pulled from their flights home and detained. the men were with ryan lochte when lochte says they were stopped and robbed. overnight they were released with local authorities with the understanding they would continue their discussions with authorities thursday. they intend to make further statements on thursday. we will for you ahead at 6:30. 6:04. breaking news out of turkey. six people are dead. this is new video of the scene. the attacks happened hours apart in two eastern cities. four of the dead are police officers. one of the attacks was pinned on eye kurdish terrorist group that recently launched a violence campaign against

without bail after being arraigned on first degree murder charges. investigators do not know his motive in the murders of imam and farrah o deem. last night muslim lamar advertising met in jamaica to discuss the murders and held an emergency meet ago lightning side relatives of the victims. although prosecutors have not identified a muslims believe those were targeted because of their religion. >> we want to make sure the perpetrator is brought to justice and the full force of the law is applied to him. we want to make sure this is classified as a hate crime. >> reporter: police say a gun found in the home does match the weapon used to commit the murders. donald trump says more terror attacks will take place because of the way the obama

trump describes as quote politically correct. the republican candidate spoke out during a fox news town hall in milwaukee. he criticized president obama and his rival, hillary clinton, for the way the u.s. withdrew troops from iraq. trump called the move spring break said it led directly to isis being formed and we are letting thousands and thousands of his people come into our country. we have no idea who they are, where they come from, there is no ape work. the thousands and yesterday trump met with his national security team at trump tower hours before attending his first classified briefing at the fbi headquarters in lower manhattan. he received information on threats like isis but was not briefed on covert action details. today hillary clinton will be in new york city. meanwhile documents delivered by the fbi to congress

public. the senate judiciary committee chair is calling for unclassified documents to be turned over to the public. the release could give voters their own per suspect stiff of the e-mail scandal. clinton was campaigning in cleveland. paul mccartney tweeted this picture of the two of them together writing she is with me. the presidential candidate made a stop at quicken loans arena the picture has been retweeted and liked 10,000 plus times. 6:07. mayor de blasio is announcing plans for one of the largest investments to the city's parks since he took office. he will outline today exactly how the $150 million will be spent. it will be split among five parks, one in each borough. the money will create new running and hiking path as long with soccer fields and water

500 people aboard a caribbean ferry when it caught fire yesterday morning. -- it ignited. nobody was seriously hurt. a medical examiner found that 18-year-old paul o'neal died of a single gunshot wound to the back. this was an incident caught on camera last month. o'neal rammed head on into a squad car. police fired at him when he ran away on foot. one officer thought o'neal this fired but he was unarmed.

died last night after she suffered burns to 90% of her body. as we told you yesterday morning a 5-year-old girl was critically injured in the fire as well. she died at the hospital. the girl's mother is still recovering. other people who lived in the three-story home jumped from windows to escape the flames. police say the two people who are charge with murdering a woman who vanished in new jersey actually tried to kill her once before. andre harris and jennifer to kill julius. her body was found tuesday night buried in the backyard of a home from long branch owned by harris. >> i just want to know why. it just can't be no stupid reason. you have to have a reason why. >> no we know. it was a little glimmer of hope for awhile. but now we know and harris and sweeney are also charged with

effect. ken over to you. 6:31. suffolk county police shutting down streets overnight after a 63-year-old woman was found dead. authorities say she was drowned by her own son and this morning he is facing murder charges. police held a rare late night news conference to update us on this case that has shocked the community. diana rocco has the latest from cold spring harbor. diana? >> reporter: tony ken -t appears that 23-year-old son may have actually called another family member to confess what had done. this crime has simply sent shockwaves through this quiet long island community. it was here yesterday police found 63-year-old elizabeth cullen. she was dead when they arrived on the family's property yesterday and this morning 23- year-old dennis cullen jr., her son, is in police custody. he was arrested at the family's home a short time after his mother was found. police say just before 4:00

drowned in the family swimming pool at 70 white hill road. when they arrived they found her body near the pool house. cullen's son was not home at the time but it appears this morning he did contact a family member, possibly his sister, and tell her what he had done. he returned to the residence a short time later and was immediately arrested by police. >> when we were processing the scene, again, we arrived approximately 4:15 p.m. while we were processing the scene, that is when he returned and we placed him under arrest immediately. that was at approximately 5:50 p.m. >> reporter: cullen has been in police custody since last night. police say it is not clear why he may have killed his mother. he is now charged with second degree murder. diana rocco channel 7 eyewitness news. 6:32. new this morning the search is on for a gunman who shot and

a 17-year-old boy was shot in the chest and killed and a 21- year-old man was shot in the stomach and critically wounded. if you have any information, you are asked to call police. 6:33. a sex offender with an extensive rap sheet has been arrested in the rain of a woman in brooklyn. police say michael mann sexually assaulted a 27-year- old woman at knifepoint. this happened on tuesday. after that attack, police a mann actually called them to complain about his roommate. when police showed up mann when they noticed his red sneakers matched the description of a rain suspect they were looking for. from the pool to the police station, two members of the american swim team had their trip to the rio olympics extended unexpectedly. they were pulled off their plane at the last minute to answer questions about a gunpoint robbery reported by gold medalist

darla miles has more. >> reporter: the two swimmers are expected to speak to authorities at some point today. they had actually already cleared customs when they were detained. the decision came after a brilliant judge saw video of them returning the morning after the alleged incident as if absolutely nothing was wrong. new video shows american swimmers leaving the rio after being detained by police. the two were pulled off their flight back to the u.s. last night. investigators looked into their claims they were robbed at gunpoint sunday night. [speaking in a foreign language] >> reporter: their attorney spoke in portuguese, saying there was confusion between the judge and police. the robbery allegations first came from ryan lochte, who says the men were out late after the last of the swimming events,

police officers. >> the guy pulled out his gun, cocked it, put it to my forehead. he said get down. i put my hands up and i was like whatever. >> reporter: but lochte's story has changed and brilliant authorities found little evidence to -- brazillian authorities found little evidence to support it. and ordered passports seized but lochte had already left for the u.s. the three others agreed to stay in brazil and cooperate with the investigation. lochte was scheduled to leave wednesday and again he admits he changed part of his original story but said he did not make this incident up. he says he spoke with rio police before he left the country and they didn't seem to

to leave the safety of olympic village after reports of another robbery. a member of the british team was held up at gunpoint. it is not clear who the victim was. he or she is not hurt but they are shaken from the incident. 6:36. we are learning more about the u.s. payment flown to iran when american prisoners were freed. the wall street journal details the timing. it says the cargo plane carrying the cash was only allowed to take off fr geneva airport when a swiss air port plane carrying the freed americans left iran. the handling raises questions as the obama administration says the payment was not ransom. 19-year-old steven regatta was arraigned yesterday.

is that developing out west a massive wildfire continues to threaten communities as it sweeps through an area east of los angeles. the blue cut fire has burned through more than 25,000 acres as of this morning it is only 4% contained. 1300 firefighters are on the ground, and aggressive water drop operations are expected to continue today.
