mental illness ending in tragedy. a 23-year-old man charged with drowning his own mother in the family pool in lord harbor. kristin joins us now with details. >> reporter: diana, police say that dennis colin junior said he had a fight with his mother over his not taking his psychiatric medications. sources tell us that he was diagnosed with paranoid schizo and recently released from a hospital. prosecutors say 23-year-old dennis colin junior told police in a several hour-longed tape video how he allegedly killed his mother in their backyard pool. >> he put her in a head lock, walked from the shallow end of the pool with her in the headlock to the deepened of the pool, all the time while she was struggling. >> reporter: colin junior lived in the house with his mother,

then pulled his mother's lifeless body from the water and placed it near a shed on the property, covering it with a dinghy. >> he went in the house, took a shower, went into his mom's wallet, took money out, credit card, took her car to the train station, drove -- took a train into manhattan and met up with his sister and explained to his sister what happened. she notified the father. and then the three of them returned to the residence where colin junior is facing second degree murder charges. he is being held on $8 million bail. >> he is pretty calm. and as i indicated, he hasn't been convicted of anything so he is not sorry. he hasn't said he is sorry at this point. >> reporter: colin junior's attorney says he will be looking into his client's psychiatric background. as for elizabeth colin, she comes from a high-ranking

today's developments. >> after several high-profile shooting deaths of both police and civilians tension over law enforcement has been high for quite some time now. clinton and trump trying to make ways in the polls. hillary clinton offered only a quick wave as she made her way inside john j collins this afternoon. she met with several police including the police commissioner bill bratton for what was billed as the challenges of policing nationwide. >> we have a lot of work to do together. we don't have a minute to lose. >> reporter: the meeting comes on the heels of intense few months for police after the ambushes in dallas and baton rouge as well as last week's unrest in milwaukee, after the police-involved shooting there of an armed black man. >> we have to be clear-eyed about the challenges we face. we can't ignore them. certainly we must not inflame

ago, commissioner bratton made headlines by saying he was scared of trump's candidacy and that the business mogul showed a quote lack of depth when it comes to the issues. bratton was asked if he is still scared of trump. we will have his answer tonight at 6:00. >> thanks, rob. a naked statue of donald trump removed from union square after it caused a commotion. these life-size statue of the today by an anti- trump activist. you can see kind of a stern face and trump's hands folded over a belly there. the statue in union square caused so much of a stir that the parks department had it removed by breaking it off at the ankles. mayor bill de blasio didn't quite know what to say. >> when he is wearing clothes, i don't like him. i can only imagine what he is like without clothes on. it sounds like i'm really glad it was removed.

san francisco are actually still in place. one other statue was found in cleveland. the railroad service is back up and running after a train struck a person. for several hours, several branches experienced delays. commuters riding the branches were forced to search for alternatives or simply wait. the mta says the person hit and tracks. another bid to stop the civil war in syria. john kerry will meet with the foreign minister in switzerland. this comes after tens of thousands of civilians are trapped. it is ready to back a u.n. call. meanwhile this haunting image of the devastation there is going viral around the world. it shows a 5-year-old boy

life's most frightening moments like a mass shooting and many of the tactic that's first responders use. a.j. ross with more on the program and what students are learning in order to stay safe. a.j. >> reporter: diana, this training is all about empowerment versus being helpless and equipping students with the skills to save their lives and others. for several hours they were here at the public safety training academy going through extreme scenarios. that many say will last a lifetime. when the unthinkable happens, being prepared could mean life or death, which is why kids in morris county are not just learning first aid basics in the classroom, they're being exposed to real-life scenarios. >> it is so realistic. this is great preparation for if it ever happens. >> if there was a scenario in a school or something like that,

fact, this is just a small portion of a week- long training where teens from over 30 different schools learn first responder skills through staged scenes like a club shooting, fire and an officer shot during a traffic stop. >> this is a real thing that a kid might have to do in today's society. >> reporter: while some believe the exposure is too much for kids, others say it's necessary that we live in. >> we underestimate the capabilities of our children. and people have said do you think this is do adult-ish teach the kids? my response is, you know, when the event happens, we can't eliminate the kids from being part of the unfortunate tragedy. >> reporter: judging by the smiles and feedback they have received over the past four years of this program, it's an experience that teens say they will never forget.

if we saw spotty showers. futurecast shows that until 10:00 tonight. hit and miss here and there. skies will clear overnight and we start with a lot of sunshine tomorrow. friday will be bright, sunny, blue skies. that will turn the temperatures up by as much as 5 degrees in some cases. really it will be considerably warmer tomorrow. not necessarily more humid. but a lot warmer with the temperatures. and by the afternoon hours, we could see some showers moving through. not expecting widespread thunderstorm activity. rule out afternoon pop-up showers. then for friday night, we clear out again. saturday starts with sunshine and clouds move in with spotty showers through the middle part of the afternoon. sunday starts with clouds and looks like it could end with showers, especially north and east of the city. so that's how we will crank open the next workweek with spotty showers monday morning. the hamptons and jersey shore all look dry for saturday. but on sunday, it looks like

>> police have arrested a woman who they say severely neglected her own dog. he looks happy now. but he was in pretty bad shape when he was found over a year and a half ago. the dog was found in a cage in brentwood. he had open sores on his body covered in feces and. rine. >> the dog weighed 4.8 pounds. by december 29th, only eight days later, the dog weighed 9 pounds. as close to death on a scale of one to ten, i would say this has got to be a ten. >> bean has since been adopted by a new family. his former owner, 32-year-old shane astanon is facing animal cruelty charges. more on the flooding in louisiana.

>> this summer camp counselor alarmed by the boldness of the man who has been exposing himself to little kids. the camp counselor say they walk the kids to their doors to make sure they're safe. >> it's terrible. terrible. what sympathy do you have or like -- to be doing this in front of kids in the daytime. to be doing this in front of to play. >> reporter: it has happened eight times since may. this is an image of the suspect's car released by cops. it is a dark colored older model four-door vehicle. police say the suspect targets young children in residential neighborhoods alone or in a group. he calls them over to his car, exposes himself and drives away. >> it is very alarming. it is. >> i can't even think about this because it's abnormal. >> reporter: police are asking

land use master plan. homeland security areas and habitats threatened by endangered species would be exempt. a project is being planned to protect residents of a westchester county town. some worry it will end up damaging their property. 85 property owners have received notice their land may be impacted by a flood mitigation project planned by the u.s. army corps of engineers. the project would widen, deepen a mile. >> we would be happy to contribute a piece of our backyard if we felt this was the answer that the town needed. but when we look at the 700 page document we don't get it. >> the overall project will improve not only the quality of life, but the continued vibrance of the village. >> officials say it would be a couple years before the work to begin and property owners would

california. the blue cut fire in san bernardino county still out of control tonight. gusty winds and heat are making it hard for firefighters to keep the fast-moving flames from destroying more land. fire command says the blaze has scorched more than 49 square miles. evacuation orders remain in place for 80,000 residents. >> it was bright red. it was like a war zone. >> i have my stuff packed and ready in the car just in case. my pictures of my boys. right now officials the fire is just 4% contained. a child abuse investigation involving a little girl who thought an insult was her name. jennifer and her live-in boyfriend clarence face domestic battery and other charges. hot springs police say the 4- year-old said her name was idiot. they say she was malnourished and had bruises all over her body. a neighbor spoke but would not go on camera. >> the dad who lives over here,

it gives me chills thinking about it if my kids were to end up like that. the boyfriend admitted to police that he zip-tied the girl to her bed as punishment. she is now in custody of the state. the investigation continues into last week's death of a 10- year-old at a water slide in kansas city. initial reports that weight regulations weren't followed now appear untrue. the question remains, how do you prevent it from happening agn? is the world's tallest water slide at a kansas city water park. for the first time, the two women in the raft with caleb schwab are speaking out. they are sisters who both suffered facial injuries. they released a statement through their lawyer saying being mothers ourselves, we can only help that the family can find some comfort in knowing that we are doing everything we

occurring again to any other family. the ride features multi person rafts that make the 168-foot drop at speeds up to 70 miles per hour. each raft is supposed to carry between 400 and 550 pounds. police initially released a report stating that one rider weighed 140 pounds. another 170. and an unclear weight for caleb who would have to 90 pounds to make the 400-pound raft limit. police say weights taken at a hospital after the accident showed one person weighed 275 pounds. another 197 and a third 73 pounds, putting the combined weight at 545. the reason for the discrepancy is still unclear. but police say that caleb sat in the front of the raft, with

on saturday. showers are trying to scoot in to southeastern new york, coming out of earn pennsylvania and into new jersey. but they don't make a lot of progress. a few might sneak through to produce a spotty showers. skies go clear and we start with sunshine friday morning. clouds come and go throughout the day. after 2:00, we could see spotty showers showing up. south and east is the best bet for the showers to happen. going into saturday, it's sort of a repeat. could see a spotty shower showing up. no major thunderstorm threats. instead it's a quick-moving shower comes in and leaves quite quickly as well. air quality is good. we're looking at uv index tomorrow of 8 which is very high. moderate to high pollen counts. rag weed, grasses all concerns for the pollen counts and allergies. jersey shores and hamptons, here is the forecast.
