one news, channel 7 a witness news with joe torres and jeff smith with the exclusive accuweather forecast. now eyewitness news at 5:00. >> breaking news in the death of a 9-year-old girl in queens. now the stepmother is in custody charged with her murder. a power outage causes traffic trouble and more in the bronx. hundreds are still without more than a thousand. i'm joe torres. >> and i'm sandra bookman. first we will get to the breaking news in queens. an hour ago, police charged a woman in connection to the death of her young stepdaughter. >> this comes after a full day of questioning. mallory hoff has the latest. joe and sandra, she is expected to be walked from the precinct

member tells us he knew there was something wrong when it came to the relationship between the 9-year-old girl and her stepmother. 55-year-old shamdai arjun is now charged with murder. police say she is responsible for the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter kaur. around 6:00 last night, a neighbor tried to use a bathroom in the home. locked. no sounds coming from inside. kaur was discovered in a bathtub. no water in the tub. police responded to a 911 call. they found her unconscious. she was pronounced dead at the scene. the father of the 9-year-old girl was seen leaving the precinct this morning, visibly shaken with support he walked from the precinct to a car. yesterday afternoon coming home from work and learning about the death of his daughter, he collapsed in the front yard.

one intersection in pelham gardens. stephen kim has the latest. >> reporter: well, we're here at the intersection of east chester road where you can see the traffic light here is out. it has been out for a few hours now. that's why police are on the scene, directing traffic. if you take a look down the block, you can see con ed is working as quickly as they can on that side of the block is without electricity, including this mcdonalds. it is closed with no one inside, presumably no idea when power would come back. the employees were sent home. the power seems to be coming back slowly in certain sections. several blocks of home are without electricity.

we saw crews there residents shortly there after getting their power back. now, conn-ed says the peak of this outage, 2500 lost power, the latest update, about 430 customers are now without customers. they expect to have the power back up and running by 6:30. reporting live in the bronx, stephen kim, eyewitness news. >> storms blew through the area today causing plenty of trouble for drivers. flooding early this afternoon in huntington station. it is clear in new york city and many parts of the area. but more storms on the way perhaps? let's check in with meteorologist jeff smith. >> joe, it's interesting. a good chunk of the tri-state area stayed rain today. but if you got rain, you got downpours for a couple hours. the big story was over long island. this is a five-hour radar loop.

that sat over the same spots over the north shore towns of suffolk and nassau county and extending into parts of new york city. this dropped huge amounts of rainfall in a short amount of time. three to four and a half inches of rain estimated by radar. the good news for suffolk county, that area is in a severe drought. this was much needed but too much in a short period of time. multiple cars stuck in the water. riverhead had significant are on the way. slated to move in late tomorrow. it's a more organized batch of potentially strong thunderstorms. plus a big change in the air mass after the front moves through. it's all ahead on accuweather. joe. >> thank you, jeff. you can stay up to date with the accuweather alerts by using our app. police are investigating the death of a man in

about a stabbing just after 7:00 last night. the man was air lifted to the meted cal center for emergency surgery but later right now police will only say they boulevard it occurred during a domestic incident. new jersey state police say a child died in a multi vehicle accident this morning. investigators say a pickup truck rear-ended a sedan on the hudson bay extension. a 5-year-old boy was in a car seat but did not survive. were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. three other cars were involved. two other people were hurt. police do not expect to file criminal charges. also in new jersey, authorities identified the woman killed when two new jersey transit buses collided in newark yesterday. jessie garcia of newark was a

boned. 70-year-old joseph may ran a red light. he was also killed. the accident remains under investigation. a grim discovery in a long island park. police now call this a homicide. a passerby spotted the body this morning in the park. investigators say there were significant lacerations on it. the medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death. at this point the victim's identity has not been released. now. republican nominee, presidential nominee donald trump intensified his court ship of minority voters in new york today. he met with his new hispanic advisory council at trump tower. the council is a diverse group of national hispanic leaders. they will advise trump and share his proposals with the hispanic community. this follows enhanced efforts by trump to court african-

gathering to honor the memory of an unarmed man killed in a police shooting. the ninth annual sean bell family day took place in the park in south gentleman mac a. bell was killed in a barrage of police bullets outside of a strip club in jamaica in 2006. his fiance at the time says she organizes the event for families. >> we're representing community and family. ten years ago my family was torn apart. with t bring families together and communities together and just to show from tragedy we can come to triumph. >> she says the day also honors the memory of other people killed in gun violence. police have now connected more brooklyn robberies to a pair of suspects on the run. have a good look at the men in the surveillance video. police say they held up two delivery delivers last week. that brings the total number of

vigilant. yesterday one body surfer needed help and was rushed to the hospital for observation. any big waves around here. >> not around here. on the pacific coast, that could be from storm that's are thousands of miles away. >> well, we got some storms this afternoon. >> yes, we did. even here in manhattan had almost an inspect of rain. parts of long island getting three to four inches of rain. 90% of the tri-state area actually stayed dry during the day today. tomorrow night, a different story. tomorrow, widespread situation. i don't think anyone will get three to four inches of rain. today was a concentrated localized type of event. live look outside right now over toward lower manhattan. the temperature is 80. the humidity is high at 69%. it stays muggy through tomorrow and tomorrow night. then a huge change in those humidity values as we head into monday on the lower side, which many of you will rejoice after

through recently. 83 your high today which is prettily close to normal. 97 the record back in 1955. .28 inches of rain in central park earlier this afternoon, with the shower that just sat over new york city and also parts of long island. showers and thunderstorms with a cold front coming in late tomorrow. i think the time range will primarily be from 5:00 a.m. to midnight. with those, downpours and gusty winds. this situation. it's more of a downpour type of scenario. breezy and much less humid during the day on monday. like i was saying, long island, they needed the rain. maybe not quite that much in that short amount of time. but a lot of suffolk county in a severe drought. it will be interesting to see what happens when that map gets updated. that happens every thursday. every thursday the u.s. drought monitor comes out.

showers that developed over the north shore of long island. it was a converge of two sea breezes from the atlantic and long island sound, can converging air rises and that causes your showers and thunderstorms to develop. much bigger area of showers off to our west right now over the ohio valley. that will be moving in tomorrow evening. it's not inconceivable that we get a shower or storm overnight tonight. it would be scattered. during the day tomorrow, maybe and then tomorrow afternoon is when the main chill comes in from the west. could be strong storms with that and heavy downpours. monday, not even getting out of the 70s and low humidity to boot. mostly cloudy tonight. warm and humid. we're down to about 75. it's humid with cloud and sun tomorrow. a spotty thunderstorm. 84. that becomes more widespread from west to east tomorrow evening. then mostly cloudy after midnight. down to 68. check out monday.

>> five people were injured by a run away horse at a fair in washington state. the sheriff's office says the carriage horse became frightened at the southwest washington fair in centralia said. the handler was walking the animal, looking for customers when the horse bolted down the crowded midway. first responders eventually were able to catch up with the animal and got the horse under control. >> it's going racing speed with

mind you, just going crazy fast. >> 38-year-old man and his 4- year-old daughter had to be air lifted to a hospital in seattle. they remain in serious condition. three other people needed treatment. no word yet on what spooked the horse. new york city taxi drivers no longer have to pass their test in english. driver tests will now be available in several languages. according to a report, the move brings the city in line with ap that do not have an english language requirement. only 4% of taxi drivers were born in the united states. in new jersey, slightly higher gas prices at the pumps. aaa mid-atlantic says the average price of regular gas is $1.92, up just a correct from last week. that compares to the national average price of $2.14, also up a penny from last week. new developments in the
