>> this is new york's number one news, channel 7 eyewitness news with joe torres and sandra bookman, laura behnke with sports, and jeff smith with the exclusive accuweather forecast. now eyewitness news at 6:00. found dead. her stepmother charged with murder. the new details we're learning about this tragedy in queens. and wild weather, a line of showers and thunderstorms drenches part of the tri-state area in an instant, trigger flash flood warnings and power outages. i'm sandra bookman and i'm joe torres. a stepmother that's been charged with the murder of a 9- year-old in queens. >> the body of the little girl

last night in a bathtub. she moved from india to queens three months ago. mallory hoff is in queens with our lead story. mallory. >> reporter: sandra, joe, that is exactly right. this little girl, this 9-year- old, moved to this country three months ago to live with her father and stepmother. the goal here was for this child to have a better life. from one member of this family that he knew something was wrong when it came to the relationship between the child and her stepmother. 55-year-old shamdai arjun is now charged with murder. police say she is responsible for the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter ashdeep kaur. >> the stepmother did whatever she wanted. she told me she sometimes beat

>> yes. >> reporter: a relative of the father said he had spoken to her about the relationship with her stepmother. he knew something was wrong. >> she always came to our house, you know, and told me that the stepmom not really care for her. she beat her up sometimes. >> reporter: in this photo, kaur is seen standing with her father and stepmother, as billion as her stepmother's grandkids. around 6:00 last night, a neighbor tried to use a bathroom in the multi-family was locked. no sounds coming from inside. kaur ways discovered in a bathtub. no water in the tub. police responded to a 911 call and found her unconscious. she was pronounced dead at the scene. the father of the 9-year-old girl was seen leaving the precinct this morning, visibly shaken. with support, he walked from the precinct to the car. yesterday after coming home from work and learning about the death of his daughter, he collapsed in the front yard.

her life just like that. it's pretty sad to see this in the neighborhood. >> reporter: and at this point, investigators have not provided additional information about what led to this 9-year-old's death. we expect to hear from the medical examiner's office in the days ahead. live in queens, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, mallory. thunderstorms swept through parts of the tri-state area this afternoon, sending down sheets of rain. flash flood warning. take a look at the scene earlier today in suffolk county. trucks, cars and even a police squad car sloshing through the streets. the flash floods quickly made the roads hard to drive through. we have team coverage of the weather. jeff has the latest on the forecast. but we begin with stephen kim and an update on power problems in the bronx. stephen. >> reporter: joe, it's been

traffic light is still out. police are still here directing traffic. and crews are still down the block working as quickly as they can. this is the intersection of east chester road in the bronx. the businesses all on that side of the street are without power. there is good news, power is slowly coming back in some places. at the peak of this outage, customers were without power. now only 430 customers are without power. we found several homes without electricity since 2:30 this afternoon, including a senior center that we spotted residents sitting outside, saying it was too hot to be indoors. about an hour ago or so we saw crews arrive and many residents got their power back. minutes later the biggest issue with residents was the lack of

said it would take 20 to 30 minutes. then we called them again and they said we can't tell you the exact time it will be back. >> it was really bad. my husband is very sick in a bed. they can't do nothing. >> reporter: again, those folks that you just heard from just got power back. so they are okay. but there are still hundreds without power here in the bronx. be restored by 6:30 tonight. reporting live in the bronx, stephen kim, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> the question is can we expect more wild weather tonight? meteorologist jeff smith. jeff. >> sandra, things have really quieted down significantly right through the evening hours we are not expecting much. the damage is already done. we got these reports from observers in long island

3.85 inches. you saw that video 2.37 inches of rain. it was a case of two sea breezes converging right over long island. a sea breeze from the atlantic and long island sound. you get this line of showers and thunderstorms. that sat just length the lie for several hours between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 this afternoon. radar estimates were 3 to 4 and a half inches of rain in the area. parts of queens and manhattan. these are the flood reporting that we got during the afternoon, clustered over north western suffolk county and fairfield county, connecticut. things have quieted down significantly. one downpour over middle essex county. you can't rule out another shower or storm overnight. another organized batch of rain promises to bring wet weather in here by tomorrow evening. we will detail that, plus what

were hurt. police do not expect to file criminal charges. new information, authorities have identified the woman killed when two new jersey transit buses collided in newark yesterday. 49-year-old jessie garcia of newark was a passenger on the bus that was t-boned. police say 70-year-old joseph barthelis may have run a red light while driving a bus with no passengers on board. he was killed. the accident remains under investigation. investigating the stabbing death of a 37-year-old man in sullivan county. monticello officers responded to a 911 call about a stabbing last night just after 11:00. they say they found a man with stab wounds. he was air lifted to the orange county medical center for emergency surgery but later died. right now police believe the stabbing occurred during a domestic dispute.

after suffering a shot to the stomach. new at six, a toddler rescued after a boat capsizes. the family in florida was coming home from dinner. the boat capsized. the mother noticed that the toddler was missing but she could hear the little girl crying. >> the rescue came very fast. the mom and dad were looking under the boat. and dad was sitting on the boat hold willing the -- holding the baby. >> god was with us. >> the toddler was in an air pocket and wearing a life vest. rescuers found her. no one was hurt. in louisiana, water remains high in many areas. the catastrophic flooding there in louisiana far from over. the health department says that flooding has damaged graves, tombs and vaults in at least 15

and the humidity will stay with us right through tomorrow night. and then it will nose dive as we head into the day on monday. monday will just feel like a totally different season. south wind coming in at 8 miles per hour. the high on the day of 83 after a morning low of 70. 97 the record back in 1955. look at that, rainfall in central park earlier this afternoon. .82 inches. of course parts of long island getting three to four inches of rain. sun setting at 7:46 p.m. showers and thunderstorms will arrive with a cold front tomorrow from 5:00 p.m. to midnight tomorrow. downpours, maybe strong gusty winds with the storms as they move by. breezy and much less humid during the day on monday. again, 79 in the park. low 80s in the suburbs.

weakening during the past hour or so. you can't rule out maybe another pop-up shower or storm overnight tonight just because it's so muggy out there. we will have the front gradually approaching from the midwest. but the main show comes tomorrow evening with the actual frontal passage. this is causing severe weather over parts of the ohio valley and lower michigan. that will be moving in our direction late tomorrow. here is futurecast overnight tonight. could be a spotty shower out there. doesn't ok a mix of sun and clouds. here comes the front from the west. by 5:00 p.m., you have heavier showers and storms approaching western parts of new jersey. that sweeps on through tomorrow evening perhaps with a heavy downpour and a gusty thunderstorm. watch what happens on monday. high temperatures monday don't even get out of the 70s. i can't remember the last time that happened, after such a hot few weeks. early next week, low humidity.

making a clean sweep across the east coast. then the heat will try to spread north later in the week. enjoy this nice air mass monday through wednesday while it lasts. mostly cloudy and warm and humid tonight. down to about 75. muggy tomorrow. clouds and sun. a spotty afternoon shower or thunderstorm. we get up to 84. i think the activity becomes much more widespread during the evening hours of tomorrow night. showers, a heavier thunderstorm down to 68. monday, a lot less humid. monday will feel like another season. 79 under a lot of sunshine. monday night, the city gets down to the mid-60s. that means the suburbs will get into the 50s. talk about being able to open up your windows and save on the air-conditioning finally. tuesday, mostly sunny and nice out there. we warm up a little on wednesday. low humidity still. then the upper 80s into thursday and friday. muggier and maybe thunderstorms
