last night in a bathtub. she moved from india to queens three months ago. mallory hoff is in queens with our lead story. mallory. >> reporter: sandra, joe, that is exactly right. this little girl, this 9-year- old, moved to this country three months ago to live with her father and stepmother. the goal here was for this child to have a better life. from one member of this family that he knew something was wrong when it came to the relationship between the child and her stepmother. 55-year-old shamdai arjun is now charged with murder. police say she is responsible for the death of her 9-year-old stepdaughter ashdeep kaur. >> the stepmother did whatever she wanted. she told me she sometimes beat

>> yes. >> reporter: a relative of the father said he had spoken to her about the relationship with her stepmother. he knew something was wrong. >> she always came to our house, you know, and told me that the stepmom not really care for her. she beat her up sometimes. >> reporter: in this photo, kaur is seen standing with her father and stepmother, as billion as her stepmother's grandkids. around 6:00 last night, a neighbor tried to use a bathroom in the multi-family was locked. no sounds coming from inside. kaur ways discovered in a bathtub. no water in the tub. police responded to a 911 call and found her unconscious. she was pronounced dead at the scene. the father of the 9-year-old girl was seen leaving the precinct this morning, visibly shaken. with support, he walked from the precinct to the car. yesterday after coming home from work and learning about the death of his daughter, he collapsed in the front yard.

her life just like that. it's pretty sad to see this in the neighborhood. >> reporter: and at this point, investigators have not provided additional information about what led to this 9-year-old's death. we expect to hear from the medical examiner's office in the days ahead. live in queens, mallory hoff, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> thank you, mallory. thunderstorms swept through parts of the tri-state area this afternoon, sending down sheets of rain. flash flood warning. take a look at the scene earlier today in suffolk county. trucks, cars and even a police squad car sloshing through the streets. the flash floods quickly made the roads hard to drive through. we have team coverage of the weather. jeff has the latest on the forecast. but we begin with stephen kim and an update on power problems in the bronx. stephen. >> reporter: joe, it's been

traffic light is still out. police are still here directing traffic. and crews are still down the block working as quickly as they can. this is the intersection of east chester road in the bronx. the businesses all on that side of the street are without power. there is good news, power is slowly coming back in some places. at the peak of this outage, customers were without power. now only 430 customers are without power. we found several homes without electricity since 2:30 this afternoon, including a senior center that we spotted residents sitting outside, saying it was too hot to be indoors. about an hour ago or so we saw crews arrive and many residents got their power back. minutes later the biggest issue with residents was the lack of
