another injured. a car careened past the cross divider flew into the air and slammed into other cars. >> we learned one of the victims is 29-year-old scott martella. he was the communications director for steven malone and previously worked for governor andrew cuomo. >> reporter: this is where five of those patients were taken we're told at this hour. critical condition. this as investigators tell us some of these patients flew from their cars others had to be cut out. >> three mangled cars involved in a deadly crash in the lei now the focus of an ongoing investigation. >> there's a lot of damage to the vehicles involved. there's definitely a large impact when the vehicles made contact. >> it happened just after 9:30 near exit 68 in shirley. traffic backed up for miles in

people. three adults were pronounced dead at the scene. a suffolk county worker was involved eight people were taken to area hospitals. >> there's at least two children that are injured. at least one 9-year-old and a 2- year-old. >> reporter: the most injured were taken to stony brook hospital. >> they sustained significant and severe injuries being both neurologic and therapeutic in naturing. -- in nature.

to their apartment. little did he know that would be the last time he kissed her. a bullet went right through sims neck killing her. this man says he was sitting near her when it happened. >> i saw him as he was running. came from behind shooting at another fellow. she went down. >> reporter: odessa sims was not just anyone here in harlem. beloved by the community. they say she was like a mother to everyone. >> i'm 50 years old i knew her since i was like 13, 14 years old. cooked for people. fed people. >> everything, everything. >> reporter: the love for sims. >> odess a sims number one will not die in vain. there were two shootings here overnight. the second one just down the block just hours apart. >> something is wrong when we have to in our own community fear sitting out on a bench, playing cards or checkers or chess on a nice summer night.

new tonight, the decades old case of a mother convicted for her own son's death in new jersey will drag on a little bit longer. michelle losinski was set to be sentenced on tuesday but a judge has postponed a hearing to consider a motion to acquit or grant a new trial. losinski's son disappeareded from a carnival in sayville in 1991. he was later found dead. a man was shot and killed at a party inside a park in brooklyn. to the 30-year-old victim inside scarangelo park and shot him in the head. police say he continued shooting after the victim fell to the ground. the shooter fled the scene in a black vehicle. the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital. the search is on for two suspects after a shooting at a house party in bridgeport connecticut. 13 people were hurt when two gunmen opened fire in the backyard of a home in bridge port just before 1:30 this
