have been a factor in a crash that killed five people and injured several more on the long island expressway. among the victims a former aide to governor cuomo. diana rocco is live at stonybrook medical center with the story. diana? >> reporter: ken as you mentioned, police are still investigating what caused this horrific crash that has now claimed the life of five people. the youngest died late last night .10-year-old christopher pinellas was on his way to his birthday party with his dad carmelo and aunt patricia. the car they were driving in lost control and flipped into oncoming traffic. they struck 29-year-old scott patella, he was a former aide

was also killed. this happened on the long island expressway. carmelo pinellas was driving eastbound when he ran into the median, went airborne and crossed into traffic. his family is devastated at the sudden loss of carmelo, patricia and 10-year-old christopher, who had just moved here from the dominican republic i can't terrible. terrible. i couldn't believe it. we grew up to this country about the same time. i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: so patricia's 3- year-old daughter who was in the car with them did survive this crash. an 80-year-old woman also survived. she is in critical condition this morning, again, police looking into the possibility that speed was a factor here. diana rocco channel 7 eyewitness news. >> so sad. thank you so much.

this morning after a woman well- known in her community was shot and killed in harlem. she was an innocent bystander killed in a rash of shootings over the weekend. eyewitness news reporter tony 80s is live with more. >> reporter: 61-year-old odessa sims was out here with her husband enjoying a game of card at colonel young park. her husband decided to go home else killed mrs. sims. she was a wife of more than 30 years, a mother, a well-known gentle lady in this community. this community knew and loved her very well. saturday night around 11:45 as mrs. sims sat watching the card game the gunman wearing dark clothes came running up lennox avenue and fired shots at someone. two of his bullets hid odessa sims, one of them in the head.

violence and the gun violence. close to the scene a man was shot in the leg and in brooklyn a man attending his 3-year-old son's birthday party was killed, he was shot 14 times. back here the community says enough as they grieve with this husband. >> something is wrong when we have to, in our own community, fear sitting out on a bench, playing cards or checkers or chess on a nice summer night >> of all the people in the world, she is innocent. i ain't going to be doing good forever. >> such a tragedy. a couple of other shootings happened within hours of this one and so far no one has been arrested in the death of mrs. sims. channel 7 eyewitness news. at 4:36, federal health

states along the gulf of mexico are most at risk of seeing zika virus outbreaks. right now mosquito-borne outbreaks have been found in dade county. >> reporter: those along the gulf coast, i would not be surprised if we see cases in texas and louisiana, particularly now, where you have the situation with flooding in louisiana there is going to be a lot of problems getting rid >> that is dr. anthony. he says sprays will limit their spread. further action is coming in the case of ryan lochte and his teammates for what they lied about happening in brazil. meantime lochte continues to apologize. in a new interview the swimmer again said he exaggerated the incident he originally described as an armed robbery.

police found a 22-year-old victim when they responded to avenue i in the flat land section around 1:00 this morning. police believe the shooter is a man who ran from that scene. they haven't released his name or a description of him. we are going to keep you updated as learn more. prosecutors have formally charged the woman accused of killing her step daughter in queens. the queens district attorney announced at arraignment ofagent. the girl was found strangled in a bathtub at their home. also announced were charges ofagen's ex-husband.

a mother, michelle acinose, was set to be sentenced tomorrow but a judge postponed the hearing. her son disappeared from a carnival in 191. he was later found dead. the louisiana state government now says more than 60,000 homes are damaged because of the recent catastrophic flooding there. officials say that number could still go up. the red cross says the flooding is the nation's worst disast president obama plans to visit the flood zone tomorrow. meteorologist amy freeze in for bill with the exclusive accu-weather forecast. good morning. as we get going on this monday morning it is going to be a real beauty. what a difference from over the weekend. drenching downpours on long island. yesterday the storms came through, brought a soaking rain to the majority of the area. 71 degrees is what we have in central park right now. winds are calm, pressure on the

of 80 with northwest wind. grab the sunglasses, it is bright and sunny. fresh and clean, we have had a good trench come through. north of tarrytown accumulation of rain 1.3 inches some areas in green getting more than the inch mark. the futurecast shows well afternoon today temperatures in the mid-70s. by noon pushing 80 degrees by late this tonight. we could see our temperatures dropping to low 50s in monticello, it is a windows open kind of night. we could have a few 40s showing up north and west of the city. tomorrow morning we could see a 48, 49 on the map. wouldn't be surprised. another 80-degree day tuesday. if you are headed to the beach, a nice one, northwest winds up to 20 miles per hour. going to be breezy but beautiful, bright blue skies.

brian amar. he got into a fight with a 42- year-old man. the victim got out of his car, police say he walked over to amar's victim and amar stabbed him. doctors expect the victim to be okay. amar faces assault and weapons charges. 4:49. a toddler is out of the hospital and waking up at home this morning after brave rescuers saved her life in florida. 23-month-old dinned buzzard -- kennedy buzzard were in a capsized boat. her family escaped and heard her crying from somewhere beneath the capsized boat. >> we kept praying to god and we got lucky. it is a complete miracle that everything worked like it did. >> here's what happened.

and was floating in an air pocket beneath the boat. >> wow. that is amazing. 4:49. a man with an appetite for danger had to go under the knife because of his obsession with knives. a team of surgeons removed, get this, 40 pocket knives from a man's stomach in india. he told doctors for two months he had a wild urge to eat metal. some were seven inches long. when the knives were removed a to rust. wow. the patient now plans to stay away from knives, good idea. doctors told him to try spinach if he gets the urge for iron. >> how do you get 40 in your stomach? >> i don't know. a mother's plea went viral and she and her daughter receiving support from around the world. 10-year-old cammy has autism.

crash there. >> five people were killed. eyewitness news reporter diana rocco is live at stonybrook medical center where some victims were taken. good morning. >> reporter: michelle, ken, good morning. this crash has simply devastated multiple families here on long island this morning. it has now claimed the life of five people. the youngest died here at stonybrook university hospital late last night. the youngest victim is 10-year- old christopher pinellas to a birthday party. carmelo pinellas, his father was driving his sister and 10- year-old son when they lost control and flipped into oncoming traffic. they struck 29-year-old scott martel low. he was killed his fiance

core edelson was also struck. the pinellas family says they are living a nightmare. >> they lived together, she and carmelo and christopher, they all lived together. >> in one house. so one day the whole household disappear. >> reporter: so patric this crash. an 80-year-old woman is still listed in critical condition. she was a passenger in the bmw that was struck. police are looking into all of this and investigating whether or not speed played a role here. diana rocco channel 7 eyewitness news. two gunmen are on the run this morning after a mass shooting at a house party in connecticut. police believe the shooters were hiding in the bushes

occurred early yesterday morning. while 100 people were partying the gunman opened fire, wounding 13 people at the party. one woman was shot in the face and was critically wounded. the other victim suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. most were shot in the legs. no word on a motive for that shooting shoot. the fire crews were able to control in a cathedral yesterday morning. the injured firefighters were treated at the hospital and have been released. 5:05. in the race for the white house donald trump is headed to ohio today after making a controversial pitch to minority voters this weekend. trump says he wants an inclusive country and outreach to the african-american community is something the republican party needs to do better. >> you are living in poverty,

29-year-old scott martellow. he was killed. his fiance did survive but is in the hospital. 81-year-oldize core was also killed. pinellas ran into the median went airborne and crossed into the wean traffic. his family is devastated at the patricia and christopher. >> terrible. terrible. lives first told about it i couldn't believe it. we grew up together, came to this country about the same time. i couldn't believe it. >> reporter: so patricia's 3- year-old daughter did survive this crash. an 80-year-old woman was a passenger in the bmw. she is in critical condition at the hospital.

her. saturday night around 11:45 mrs. sims was sitting, watching the card game. the gunman, wearing dark- colored clothes, came running up lennox avenue. he fired shots at someone, two of his bullets his odessa sims, one in the head. last night a vigil was held here in the park, people speaking out against the violence. that same night a man was shot in the leg. his son's third birthday party was killed, he was shot 14 times. a community says enough as they are grieving with this husband. >> something is wrong when we have to, in our own community, fear sitting out on a bench playing cards and checkers and chess on a nice summer night, that we have to worry about young people playing with guns. >> of all the people in the
