beloved service dog. surveillance video shows a man walking away with a pet. that vietnam vet says he's in danger without him. first, fire ripping through a home filled with children. three of them jumping to safety and a baby thrown to rescuers below. tonight they're all safe thanks in part to a brave and quick thinking young girl. >> eyewitness news reporter josh einiger is in sayreville tonight with their amazing escape. >> it's a long way down from young kids to jump to escape these flames but tonight their family is crediting the first responding police officer with catching them and saving their lives. >> reporter: with choking smoke and towering flames -- >> i tried to get up the stairway but it was fully engulfed. >> reporter: sayreville police officer brian gay knew there would be no time. family members trapped upstairs started to jump.

as she was on her way down i caught her. >> reporter: the fire broke out around 2:00 this afternoon on jacobsen street. gay was the first on scene but might never have made it in time if not for jaylen holloway. >> what went through your mind? >> that i was going to die. >> reporter: the 12-year-old lived in the house and was there with her cousins and aunt when she heard the fire alarm, led everyone to the bathroom and jumped out the window to call for help. >> if i didn't call the cops right away we'd probably all be dead. >> reporter: when off he caught one child who jumped and broke the fall of another. >> you could see the fear on their faces as they were coming down. they said drop the baby. and they dropped the baby and caught the baby. >> i'm all over the place right now. >> reporter: jaylen's mom was at work when the fire broke out. aside from each other, all they have left are a few family photos and a ton of gratitude. >> the first person you call when you're in trouble is the cops. all these people risk all their lives and all their families to come save my kid in my house.

house has been condemned as the fire remains under investigation. still no caused released publically by the fire marshal's office. all members of the family who jumped and the police officer wound up in the hospital for observation briefly, but none of them was hurt. we're live in sayreville tonight, josh einiger, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> very lucky indeed. thank you. another death to report tonight. the sixth victim in that 71-year-old helen adelson died today. she was fighting for her life since yesterday's crash in suffolk county which killed her husband isador. they're investigating whether the driver was speeding when he went over a median. his car striking two cars heading in the other direction. pinales died along with his sister and son.

r cuomo. >> he was a very special person. big smile and a big heart. >> this was a really, really beautiful, beautiful young man. he just loved public service. >> the whole crash just so tragic, at least three people remain hospitalized tonight including a 3-year-old. the scene of an alleged assault. two women say instead of getting x-ray technician at kings county hospital in east flatbush. here's eyewitness news reporter jim dolan with new details. >> reporter: the victims were women, one of them 83 years old who were there for x-rays of their legs. both were allegedly sexually assaulted while they were alone with the x-ray technician who has worked at the kings county since 2003. >> he probably did it for a long time over and over again. >> think there could be other victims, right? >> might be and they might not

>> reporter: both incidents have happened on saturday and larry jones was arrested shortly after the second. he's a certified x-ray technician though he has a lengthy rap sheet. >> that's not good because lots of people want jobs and good people can't get jobs, and these crooks get the jobs, and that's what they do. lots of people need jobs. >> they should be investigated to the fullest. >> before they hire them. >> of course. >> reporter: in a statement, new york health and hospital said we are committed to the our patients, have zero tolerance for such behavior, and consider this a very serious allegation. our hospital police acted swiftly in response to the patient's complaint and we immediately terminated the individual. larry jones is 65 years old. he's charged with forcible touching and sexual assault. he's worked at the hospital for 13 years but lists his residence as a homeless shelter in manhattan. jim dolan, channel 7 eyewitness news. now to vote 2016.

s they walked home from a mosque in ozone park on august 13th. prosecutors still have not given any possible motive and morel does not face hate crime charges although many in the contradict's community blame islamophobia for the killings. first on channel 7, a family in newark demanding an apology after they say an innocent 10-year-old boy was chased down by police with their guns pointed at him. legend preston's mother recorded up and in tears right after the incident two weeks ago. he says he was shooting hoops when cops chased him down an alley because they thought he was an armed robbery suspect. >> they were just holding shot guns at me like this, trying to shoot. >> they did have the guns pointed directly at him as they assumed, quote, he fits the description. >> police officers say they did

10-year-old. internal affairs is investigating the incident. a $4 million payment with wells fargo agreeing to settle a claim that it used illegal payment processing practices on student loans. the consumer financial protection bureau says wells fargo's illegal actions resulted in higher costs for thousands of student borrowers who encountered problems with their loans or received misinformation about their payment options. great news for riders on the on the long island railroad and metro north can download the app on their smart phones. they can buy tickets directly on their phones. customers can use the app to check schedules and get updates on train service disruptions. new at 11:00, who would steal a man's service dog? the heartless crime caught on camera. >> plus, a deaf and mute man is gunned down and killed by police. hear what witnesses say the man

new at 11:00, a heartfelt plea tonight from a vietnam vet who wants his dog back. john nevarez tied up his dog chewo outside a supermarket in the bronx. video shows the man taking the shih tzu away. but this isn't just any dog. veteran's service dog. here's eyewitness news reporter carolina leid. >> he's like my life. i can't even explain to you what he means to me. i just want my dog back. >> reporter: john says his dog chulo is the perfect example of man's best friend. the shih tzu is not only a companion, he protects this vietnam veteran. >> i have diabetes and when i get sick, i don't know. he starts barking and i got to

afternoon around 4:30 john tied up chulo outside the associated supermarket on third avenue in the morrisania section of the bronx. he usually takes the service dog inside but figured he would be quick. watch on surveillance video as a man unties chulo and walks away with him. store employees can't believe it. >> that's like his best friend. we all know the dog. we know him by his name. his name is chulo. we were in shock when we found out. the dog is to him. >> i've had him since he was six months old. it was me and my wife. she died. i'm all alone. but i promised to take care of him. >> reporter: now john stands outside the store answering phone calls from the flyers he's handed out. he's offering a $2,000 reward. the money he planned to use to pay his rent. >> i would go homeless for him. i don't know where he is or what this person did. but i hope he has a conscience

somewhere. >> john says chulo has a microchip so if someone drops him off at an animal shelter, they will get him home. you can also call crimestoppers. 1-800-577-tips. reporting in the morrisania section of the bronx, carolina leid, channel 7 eyewitness news. >> hopefully someone will do the right thing. a state trooper is on administrative leave tonight as outrage grows over the deadly shooting of an unarmed deaf killed last week after being pulled over by a trooper in charlotte, north carolina. the trooper says he tried to pull harris over for six miles before he finally stopped. neighbors believe he was trying to communicate using sign language when the trooper opened fire. >> he's stopped over here, then a few seconds later i heard a gunshot. the guy is deaf. he didn't hear the siren. he didn't hear anything.

then we clear it out for the weekend. numbers are cool tomorrow. upper 40s well north and west. after that we'll rebound in the afternoon to near 80 in many locations with low humidity. three storms we're watching right here. fiona fizzling here. 35-mile-per-hour winds will continue to weaken. minimal threat on the east coast. we look at gaston, tropical depression 7. earlier strengthened to gaston. this is likely to hurricane here but probably as it strengthens very quickly, that would tend to recurve out it's this system right here called invess 99 that could move in to the weekend. we'll watch that closely. for 64 tomorrow morning. 80, lots of sunshine and low humidity during the day. tomorrow night, not as cool, 67. a warmup wednesday to 85. middle 80s on thursday. a little bit more humid, maybe a late day thunderstorm north and west. spotty storm at night in to the first part of friday. shouldn't have a big impact on
