see if you recognize 38-year-old kevin bristow. police think he's armed and dangerous. 10 on your side's erin kelly joins us live at that 7-eleven -- where police were called twice yesterday. erin? that's because they say there was a second robbery here last night. they're not sure if it's connected to the one involving the shooting. this is surveillance video from wednesday morning. moments leading up to the shooting. we're told the clerk is out of the hospital and the suspect got away with $50 dollars. then -- police say last night -- just before 9 pm -- an armed robber at a 7-11 on redgate avenue and orapax in west ghest demanded cash and ran off. 25 minutes later -- police say the same thing happend at a 7-11 on colonial ave and princess anne road in ghent. the finally -- back here at chesapeake boulevard -- police say an armed suspect went in the store and quickly ran out before getting money. police have not said if all 3 crimes last night

at 5 - i'll explain what may have prevented the suspect from getting money here last night. live in norfolk, erin kelly, 10 on your side. early this afternoon an attempted robbery in virginia beach led to a school lockdown. police found a hurt employee at the citgo on diamond springs road. we're told a man came into the store just before 12-30 with a knife. he didn't get away with any money - but he did cut an employee on the arm - and was last seen running toward driftwood apartments. meanwhile bayside elementary school was on an external lockdown during the investigation. that means no one was let into the school. the employee is expected to be ok. this store was also robbed on the first. hampton police are investigating two business robberies that happened 15 mintues apart. the first one took place at a family dollar on lasalle avenue just after 10 last night. new since midday: surveillance photos of the suspect police say went inside with a gun and demanded money. it was the same scenario 15 minutes later at kim's chinese food also on

detectives believe one suspect is responsible for both robberies. if you have any information call the crime line. new information in a hotel shooting in chesapeake. police say there was a confrontion between the suspect and the victim inside a fourth floor room before the gunfire. the shooting happened around four this morning at the extended stay america hotel in greenbrier. this story was breaking all morning. the victim is recovering. police say they have identified a person of interest. portsmouth public schools say multiple fights broke out at i-c norcom high school today - after the fire alarm went off. our crew on the scene found multiple police cruisers at the school. we're told the fire alarms went off just before noon - but there was no fire. as students were returning to their classes - several fights broke out in the hallways. the school tells us some people were hurt - but expect them all to be fine. classes went back to normal. police are looking into the incident. a norfolk state university basketball player is in the hospital with what school officials call "a serious medical condition."

spartans. 10 on your side's liz kilmer just talked to brown's sister. she's working on putting a story together for you at 5:30. an escaped inmate is back in custody. elizabeth city police say they found heather burton hiding under a bed in a home this afternoon. washington county sheriff's deputies are headed to pasquotank county to pick her up. burton escaped while at a hopsital to get an injury checked out. new information in this crash at the chesapeake bay bridge-tunnel. only chopper 10 gave you this view live yesterday at 4 of the truck in the water and crews taking 33-year-old matthew killmon to the hospital. bridge-tunnel police say killmon tried to pass a slower-moving 18 wheeler before losing control and plunging into the bay. 10 on your side's jason marks talked to the crews who saved his live and joins us live from the virginia beach side of the bridge-tunnel . tonight rescue crews are still in disbelief that matthew killmon is alive. they say not many driver who end up in the water

let's take you back to this scene yesterday just after 3 here at the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. police say killmon tried to pass a car and ended up taking out 200 feet of guardrail before his big rig splashed into the water. crews were able to throw him a life ring until boats could rescue him. he suffered a broken arm, cuts on his face and hypothermia. it was an outcome that doesn't happen very often. 01=3:44 "unfortunately we have been the ones who have responded to vehicles that have gone off the bridge and this is the first recovery that i know of that we actually had a live victim" cheaspeake bay bridge police say they do plan to charge killmon. we're told precon marine out of chesapeake was hired to recovery the truck and trailer. we're told that process

saturday. in the meantime work to repair the guardrail has begin. live in virginia beach jason marks 10 on your side. a driver is in the hospital after police say they drove the wrong way in the downtown tunnel. this is video sent to us by a viewer. virginia state police say they driver was going west bound in the east bound lanes. the wrong way driver hit several cars. no injuries were reported. the driver went to the hospital for a medical evaluation. new since midday --- norfolk police have identified the man who died from gunfire that left another man injured. 27-year-old christopher allen was found shot inside a home on waverly way monday night. he died at the hospital. while detectives investigated the scene --- a 26 year-old man arrived at depaul hospital with several gunshot wounds. he is expected to survive. detectives say both incidents are related . they are still investigating what happened before the men were shot. norfolk police also identified the man who died after he was found in the parking lot behind

aquariums at pine knoll shores and roanoke island say 300 have been found on hatteras island alone in recent days. a rapid drop in temperatures can cause water temperatures in shallow water to drop quickly, stunning turtles and causing a condition similar to hypothermia. cold-stunning means that the metabolism of the sea turtles slows to the point where they can't move. they rely on the surrounding water temperature to regulate their own body temperature. some wash ashore, while others may die or become easy prey for predators. national park service employees and trained volunteers are working to rescue as many sea turtles as possible. aquarium officials hope to return many of the turtles to the ocean soon. you didn't win the powerball. no one hit the jackpot. the jackpot is now a record breaking 700 million dollars. no one matched all the

the d'art center is moving to norfolk's arts district. the organization was in the selden arcade building. you may remember the building collapsed in april. the d'art center and its studios, classrooms and galleries are relocating to the duke grace building on duke street. it hopes to open by march. a 10 timesaver traffic alert. there's construction going on at a busy norfolk intersection. through march --- lanes will be reduced at the intersection of saint paul's boulevard and brambleton avenue. h-r-s-d is performing utility work. avoid the area if you can. a heads up if you live near the jefferson lab in newport news. the facility will conduct the monthly test of its tornado warning siren tomorrow morning at 10:30. the test will last up to three minutes. you could hear the siren as far as a mile and a half away. parts of california are trying to dry out. el nino storms drenched california yesterday. several roads closed in san diego after heavy rain led to massive flooding. some people

cars by water nearly up to the windows. lifeguards rescued some drivers. there were also dozens of crashes reported. further north --- winds knocked down trees and caused other damage. a woman is in good condition after this rescue in california. authorities say her boyfriend drove the truck into standing water and they were swept away. the truck rolled over and ended up wedged against a telephone pole. the man was able to get out. but the woman was trapped on the passenger side --- partially submerged in the water. firefighters had to work below the water line to get her out.

eat less sugar. a lot less sugar. the federal government has new dietary guidelines. the guidelines tell americans to limit their intake of added sugar to no more than 10-percent of daily calories. that's about 12 teaspoons of sugar a day. to put that in perspective --- a can of coke contains nearly 10 teaspoons. the guidelines also suggest cutting back on salt to about 23-hundred miligrams or about a teaspoon. and the recommendations include limiting saturated fat but not necessarily cholesterol. also --- increasing the amount of fruit, vegetables and whole grains in your diet. health and human services secretary sylvia burwell suggests making small, daily changes. hhs secretary sylvia burwell "when you think perhaps how you think

fruits or vegetables. these small changes can get you to a place where there's healthier eating for you and your family." the guidelines also suggest people start incorporating forms of protein like nuts, seeds and seafood into their meals. alcohol should be limited to one drink a day for drinks a day for men a common new year's resolution is to lose weight. but january may not be the best time to start a diet. british researchers say animals and humans have an evolutionary urge to maintain body fat in the winter months --- when natural food sources are scarce. and because modern foods are full of sugar and flavor --- the temptation to eat is stronger than our new year's resolutions. the american cancer society says death rates from the disease continue to drop. the latest data shows a 23-percent decrease in the cancer death rate since peaking in the early 1990's. that means more than one-point-seven million fewer people have

today we are learning more about the impact some store closings will have on hampton roads. yesterday at four we told you several macy's stores in hampton roads will soon close. we now know nearly 3-hundred employees are impacted. 10 on your side's brandi cummings spent the day researching what this closure will mean for the local economy. stephanie- hearing of a store closing and people losing jobs is not good news. but one hampton roads city says the closing presents an opportunity. across the country macy's will close 40 stores in the early spring. three of them in hampton roads. in all 273 employees will be impacted. some of them may be given

stores. the macy's at peninsula town center in hampton opened in 1977 but is now on the chopping block. the macys in chesapeake square opened in 1999, but will also close. and finally the macys in norfolk's military circle mall opened in 1976 and will soon close. the company ceo cited disappointing sales and earnings last year as a reason for the closings. this come as no surprise to leaders we spoke to. norfolk officials say the closure presents an opportunity to redesign and redevelop the entire area along military highway. we believe that we have a mix of retail but we also have a real opportunity with the amount of acreage involved to increase our business base dramatically - its a great central location for that. also to bring in new residential communities and other uses from a residential perspective coming up tonight on wavy news 10 at 5:30...i'll

and senate. the g-o-p-led senate approved the legislation last month. the measure would also bar any federal money for planned parenthood. the mother of a woman found dead in a texas jail cell after a traffic stop is outraged that the state trooper who pulled her over is only charged with perjury. the april traffic stop for an improper lane change quickly escalated to a shouting match and a physical confrontation with the trooper and sandra bland's arrest. authorities say bland hanged herself in her jail cell three days later. bland's mother says the perjury charge doesn't satisfy her family's call for justice. geneva reed-veal/sandra bland's mother "it doesn't' make a different to me because guess what and indictment has to be followed up by a (snaps fingers) then that might mean something, but right here, right now now that's not justice for me" a texas grand jury indicted trooper brian encinia on allegations that he lied when he claimed in

uncooperative" after he pulled her over and ordered her out of her car. the texas department of public safety now says it ll "begin termination proceedings" against encinia. around the world --- police in france are investigating an attack at a police station in paris as an act of terrorism. officers shot and killed the attacker wearing what turned out to be a fake explosives belt after he threatened them with a butcher knife. police say he cried out "god is great" in arabic. investigators say he had a piece of paper with an emblem of the islamic state group and a claim of responsibility written in arabic. police are not looking for any other suspects. the attack is a year to the day after the deadly attack on the french satirical newspaper charlie hebdo. at least 60 policemen are dead --- 200 others injured after a truck bombing in libya. the bomb detonated as recruits were gathering at a police center. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. a fire escape caught on tape.

jumped from the fourth floor of this burning apartment building in quebec yesterday. you can see the flames pouring from a top floor window. the child dangled from his father's arms before the man dropped his son to the ground. firefighters caught the 10-year-old boy. then the father and mother jumped from the fourth floor, and landed in the snow. all three went to the hospital and should be okay. it took crews about 2 hours to bring the fire under control. investigators are still looking into how the fire started. new information just in police say the two people found dead in a hampton home died in a murder-suicide. 10 on your side was on the scene at a house on charolais run - where the bodies of man and woman were found after a welfare check. police say 65 year old richard garrity killed himself after killing 55 year old barbara caton. police say caton was assaulted and garrity died from a gunshot wound. we're told the two knew eachother.

what's happening now in vegas will show up soon all around the world. the consumer electronics show is underway. it's an inside look at definition t-v you can roll up like a newspaper. it's not clear why you'd want to roll up or bend your t-v. these t-vs won't be sold this year. l-g is just showing off what's possible. a chinese firm is showing off a prototype of a drone that can carry people. it's called the ehang 184. that stands for one passenger, eight propellers and four arms. the company says the contraption can take a single passenger to a pre-programmed destination. engineers say once the destination is entered -- the passenger will only have to push buttons to take off and land. the company claims the drone can reach heights over eleven-thousand feet and

stolen at the riverdale business park, off cunningham drive. 10 on your side's joe fisher was in hampton today -- and joe, i can imagine it's a huge expensive to replace these units. anita -- air conditioning professional tell me these units are upwards of one thousand bucks each to replace! at the riverdale business park --- thieves took seven of them! this business park is made up of mostly medical offices. the employees tell me they help people --- and thieves simply helped themselves --- ruining their cooling systems. hampton police say the seven units were taken sometime between last thursday and sunday night. two employees at a dental office affected tell me they noticed the damage monday morning when they returned to work. the units now almost unrecognizable. night when the elevator got stuck about 900 feet underground. a crane was brought in to help with the rescue. the trapped workers were given radios and other supplies, including water and blankets. the crane lowered a basket with a rescuer -- who put safety harneses on the miners before lifting them all to safety. shawn wilczynski, mine manager, cargill "i also think all the training that we've done, we do have two mine rescue teams that train locally and collaborate with the local agencies on a consistent basis and that collaboration and that cooperation paid off. again, this is something that you hope that you never have to use but when it comes to fruition that it ends the way that it has today." the first 4 miners rescued waited nearly two hours until the last two were brought up to safety. no one was hurt. the mine manager believes a beam came loose under the elevator and caused it to get stuck. police in texas are looking for five men who tried to commit a smash and grab burglary. security cameras roll as

stolen pick-up into a dallas convenience store early wednesday morning. once inside --- they try to steal the store safe --- but it proves to be too much to handle. after repeatedly trying to lift the safe --- the five take off. they left the safe and a mess behind. they later abandoned the stolen truck. authorities in massachusetts are investigating why a tractor trailer burst into flames on an interstate. flames ripped through the roof of the truck yesterday evening along route 495 southbound in milford. it took crews two hours to clear the scene. no one was hurt. the driver says he heard a noise from the engine and pulled over. the truck then caught fire. the military is investigating why an airplane part fell from the sky. a piece of tail cone landed in a mississippi yard last night. the military says the part came from a national guard transport plane that was on a training mission. (wyneta smith, witness): "i heard this loud boom and i didn't know what

a hot holiday gift is banned on many college campuses. at least 20 universities have banned or restricted hoverboards --- saying they aren't safe. aside from the risk of falls and collisions, several colleges are citing federal warnings saying some hoverboards have caught fire. among the schools that have issued outright bans are american university and george washington university in washington d.c. other schools like louisiana state university and the university of arkansas have banned hoverboards from dorm rooms or campus buildings. a lot of people have personal drones. the f-a-a says more than 180-thousand are registered as of the last two weeks. the f-a-a made drone-registration mandatory starting on december 21-th. some consumer organizations estimate more than 400-thousand drones were sold this holiday season alone. the f-a-a just launched a new app this week that tells consumers where they can and can't fly their drones.

that suspect today. right now -- police have only said they think he's connected to the robbery yesterday morning. and they consider him armed and dangerous. norfolk police are looking for 38 year old kevin bristow. they think he's the man in this surveillance video -- accused of robbing and shooting a clerk at a 7- eleven on chesapeake boulevard around 2 am wednesday. this shows the moments leading up to the shooting. we're told the clerk is out of the hospital and the suspect got away with $50 dollars. hours later -- police say they were at another 7- eleven -- just before 9 pm on redgate avenue in west ghent. officers say an armed robber demanded cash and ran off. 25 minutes later -- police say the same thing happened at a 7-eleven on colonial avenue in ghent. then -- just before 10 -- at the same 7-eleven where there was a shooting earlier in the day -- police say an armed suspect went in the store
