ran out before getting any money. a manager says he believes the suspect was caught by surprise because a security guard was working. police have not said if any of the robberies last night are connected. we are working to learn more about their strategy to fight these crimes. coming up at 6 -- i'll share what an industry rep says about convenience store crimes. live in norfolk, erin kelly, 10 on your side. early this afternoon, an attempted robbery in virginia beach led to a school lockdown. police found an employee hurt at the citgo on diamond springs road. we're told a man came into the store just employee on the arm - and was last seen running toward the driftwood apartments. meanwhile, bayside elementary school was put on an external lockdown during the investigation. that means no one was let into the school. that employee is expected to be okay. this store was also robbed last friday.

your side's lex gray spoke to local police and security experts about why convenience store robberies are so common. some say the round-the-clock hours, and store layout, make them easy to get in and out of quickly. police also said window ads obscure the view-- and stores should install high- def security systems-- especially behind the register. hampton detectives are investigating two robberies, that happened within 15 minutes of each other. the first one at family dollar on lasalle avenue just after 10 last night. these are surveillance photos of the suspect who went inside with a gun and demanded money. police believe he pulled the same thing moments later at kim's chinese food also on lasalle. if you have any information call the crime line. today we are learning new information about the big-rig crash on the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. police say matthew killmon was driving the tractor-trailor that went off the bridge yesterday-- and charges are pending. 10 on your side's jason marks has been speaking with investigators.

investigators are going to pice together the accident the ended with 33 year old matthew killmon in the water. they are just amazed he survived. (under video) 01=27:19 "it was a good day for that gentleman he's lucky to be alive" it's been 24 hours after a truck drive drove off the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel and into the water and even now the fact he survived still amazes first responders. 01=3:44 "unfortunately we have been the ones who have responded to vehicles that have gone off the bridge and this is the first recovery that i know of that we actually had a live victim" crews got the after after 33 year old matthew killmon crashed through 200 feet of guardrail. chesapeake bay bridge police were first on the scene. 01=24:02 "he was holding on that piece of wood drifting from the south bound span where the accident was over to the north bound span" every officer on the bridge carries life rings like this one. they tossed to killmon and waited for rescue boats to arrive. officers can't remember the last time a life ring was used. 01=24:36 "it's a tough

they are working to recovery the truck but don't have a time line. we did speak with the company who will recover the truck and they tell me it will happen on saturday. live in virginia beach jason marks 10 on your side developing news out of texas - the state trooper charged with perjury after a woman died in jail- just surrendered to authorities. a texas grand jury indicted trooper brian encinia yesterday. he arrested 28-year old sandra bland during a traffic stop last year. three days later -she died in her cell. authorities said bland used a plastic bag as a noose to hang herself in her cell, but many questioned the circumstances of her death. if convicted, encinia will face up to a year in jail and up to a 4-thousand dollar fine. new information just in about two people found dead in hampton. police are now calling this a murder-suicide. 10 on your side went to the house on charolais run where police say 65 year old richard garrity shot himself after killing 55 year old barbara caton. we're told the two knew

the discovery yesterday after they were called to do a welfare check. norfolk police have identified the man who died in shooting that left another man injured. 27-year-old christopher allen was found inside a home on waverly way monday night. he died at the hospital. while detectives investigated the scene --- a 26 year-old man arrived at depaul hospital with several gunshot wounds. he is expected to survive. detectives say the incidents are related. they are still investigating what happened before the men were shot. we continue to follow developing news in chesapeake. a man was shot at an extended stay american hotel. confrontation occurred between two people prior to the shooting. someone called 9-1-1 just after 4 this morning. the victim was taken to sentara norfolk general hospital. we are working to get an update on his condition. police do have a person of interest. family, friends, and the community of norfolk state university are concerned about one of their basketball players. amber brown is a junior forward with the spartans. she's in the hospital with what school

bridging the gap. this weekend, virginia beach schools will take an event that started small years ago-- to a new level. when they looked at data for the district-- something wasn't quite right. 10 on your side's anita blanton went to salem high school to find out how an african-american males summit is making connections-- and changing statistics. tom and nicole this summit started at tallwood high school for a handful of students there nine years ago. the principal at the time realized there was a need for a more focused effort to help african american males succeed. she's now the director of

district. and what was once a small event is now expected to touch over 500 lives in one day.
