that's when police say they got a call from a woman saying her husband - keith richardson - held her at gunpoint and threatened to kill her. the woman was able to leave the house, but police say mr. richardson barricaded himself inside. according to a news release, hostage negotiators tried talkg richardson out of the home for several hours. they say he refused to lay down his weapon and surrender. then police say richardson walked out of the house, went to his car, then went back inside. then police say richardson came back outside with a gun. police used a k-9 to try and arrest him and police say richardson shot and killed the dog. police say richardson then raised his gun to officers and an officer shot him and a second k-9 was used to arrest him. richardson was arrested at 1:30 this morning. a neighbor says he watched it happen. gene strickland, neighbor/witness i think it could have been handled alot differently but they didn't need to bring out the entire infantry to slow this

police say keith richardson is in critical condition in the hospital. police say as is routine for any officer-involved shooting incident, the officer involved in mr. richardson's shooting is on administrative duty pending review of the completed investigation. coming up tonight on way news 10 at 5, you'll learn more about both the man involved in the shooting and where he worked and we'll tell you more about the k-9 killed in the line of duty. live in norfolk brandi cummings onancock is on adminstrative duty after firing his gun friday night. the accomack county sheriff's office is now investigating. the sheriff's office says officers patrolling the pine street apartments friday night saw people shooting at each other, and confronted them. according to the sheriff, one suspect pointed a gun at an officer. that officer then fired one shot as the suspect ran. investigators are looking into whether the officer's bullet hit anyone or anything. officers arrested 21 year-old nadir toppin. he faces gun charges. another person is in the hospital with a

minutes later --- deputies found a second gunshot victim at the nearby onancock square apartments. elizabeth city police are working to identify a suspect in a weekend shooting. it happened around three yesterday afternoon on debry street. the 22 year old victim is out of the hospital and recovering from a gunshot wound to his arm. officers found several shell casings at the scene. a bullet also hit an air conditioning unit. portsmouth police are investigating a baby's death. the call came in around 8:30 this morning from deep creek boulevard. a two month old died. the medical examiner's officer will determine how. we'll update you as we learn more information. a chesapeake man will spend the next 14 years in prison for killing a man in a bar fight. 10 on your side has been following this case since december of 2014 -- when chuck setchel died at zino's, a bar and restaurant in deep creek. this is video from that fight. in september, ronnie cisko pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. today, a judge heard

and friends before he decided on a sentence. 10 on your side's lex gray was in the courtroom for that -- and lex, you spoke with them after. yes, deanna and as you can imagine, the families feel very differently about that 14-year sentence. the victim chuck setchel's fiance told me justice has been served, and she wishes only that cisko would go away for even longer. but cisko's family gasped in the courtroom when they heard the sentence. they told me outside of the courthouse they were of setchel's death -- he had been drunk and belligerent, and arguing with cisko's brother and fiance. they say setchel threatened cisko's brother, then stepped in ronnie's way as he tried around the neck, and lays him out. the medical examiner says setchel died because an artery tore when his neck twisted -- something she says is extremely rare. after the hearing, i talked to ronnie's brother, who was with him that night and calls setchel's death

a hampton woman is in jail charged in a stabbing. police say taloni stewart stabbed a woman during a fight early yesterday morning on norwood circle. the victim should be okay. stewart is charged with malicious wounding. no decison from the supreme court on whether to take up former governor bob mcdonnell's conviction for corruption charges. at least not yet. on friday --- we told you the high court was deciding which cases it will take up. according to the supreme court website --- mcdonnell's case is not scheduled to be decided on today. mcdonnell will go to prison to serve his two-year sentence if they decide not to take the case. in september 2014 a jury found him and his wife, maureen, guilty of accepting gifts and loans from a wealthy business man in exchange for political favors. big traffic troubles during the morning commute. three seperate crashes on interstate 64 westbound caused congestion near tidewater drive, chesapeake boulevard and little creek road. jen lewis kept people updated during wavy news 10 today. v-dot

reversable roadway and diamond lanes to try and ease some of the backups. a tractor trailer is still in the chesapeake bay. chesapeake bay bridge tunnel police say the weather was too bad this weekend to recover the truck that went over the side last week. we're told divers will try and go in the water on thursday to come up with a plan to bring the tractor-trailer up. the driver --- 33-year-old matthew killmon --- drove through the barricade and into the chesapeake bay on wednesday. only chopper 10 brought you these live images during wavy news 10 at 4. he somehow managed to get out of the cab and swim to the surface. crews pulled him from the water. right now --- police haven't filed any charges. norfolk state university's new president is two days into his new contract. the school finalized the new two-year contract with eddie moore junior. it went into effect yesterday. moore was named the university's 6th president after serving as interim president since september 20-13. moore says one of his first tasks will be to start a 100 day plan

department is working to get its officers more engaged in the communities where they work. it has eliminated a special team of officers to do it. but those officers didn't lose their jobs. 10 on your side's erin kelly is live in newport news to explain. i just talked to the assistant chief -- who says this is something that the whole department started doing over the summer -- but they began pilots of it 2 years ago. during the old program -- which has been in place for years -- a community response team made of up officers and sergeants would tackle problems in each of the three precincts -- and move on to the next problem. under the change --- those officers haven't gone away -- they've been assigned beats and shifts on patrol in their precincts. the assistant chief says this is about increasing community engagement and what they call "beat ownership" throughout the force. assistant chief stacy kelly - newport news police department runs -

the police say you should expect to see more officers out in the community -- on foot and bike patrol as a result of this change. police say this has no impact on the gang and drug units -- which are part of the organized crime division. live in newport news, erin kelly, 10 on your side. it looks like winter in parts of ohio. this is the snow that fell this weekend in the toledo area. slick roads were reported. four firefighters are recovering from minor injuries after their fire truck rolled over at an icy intersection in michigan. they were responding to a fire call. they were briefly trapped in the flipped truck. you can see there's a lot of damage to the truck. no other cars were involved in the crash. check out this video from

ringling brothers and barnum & bailey circus will retire its elephants in may. that's a year-and-a-half earlier than they first said. the circus's parent company, feld entertainment, said the elephants will go to a conservation facility in florida. executives say it got too expensive to fight legislation against animal-rights groups protesting against the elephants. those groups included the norfolk-based group, peta. a once popular name will soon be no more. you're not gong to see the name "motorola" on phones anymore.

by lenovo." lenovo bought the company from google in 20-14 for almost 3-billion-dollars. motorola was responsible for the first walkie-talkies and consumer cell phones. uber has cut its prices. the ride sharing service just slashed fares in more than 100 cities in the u-s and canada --- including here in hampton roads. the company says it's trying to beat the winter slump when more people stay inside or pay off their holiday bills. the discount is different in each city. uber is hoping the price cuts pull you off the couch. uber also says it will guarantee earnings for drivers during the winter. if you live in north carolina and have blue cross & blue shield, you might get a refund. insurance company officials say its all because of a system failure. the c-e-o says a glitch took out the wrong amount of money from customer accounts. blue cross & blue shield put about 25- thousand customers into the wrong health plans and took the wrong amount of money from about 32-hundred accounts. some heart stopping

60 thousand dollars. that's how much a former jewish temple employee took before she left her job. today- leslie bradner pleaded guilty to the crime. 10 on your side's jason marks was in the courtroom and jason bradner avoided jail time? no active jail time meaning she did get four years but the judge decided to suspend that time depending on good behavior. leslie bradner worked at temple israel in norfolk for 16 years. she was in charge of the books. she left the job in late 2014. a couple months later an outside auditor noticed the missing money. bradner pocketed more than 60 thousand dollars. today in court her attorney told the judge he wasn't going to get in the reason why she did but just that she did it. the judge decided to suspend her jail time because bradner's father paid all the money back to the temple. "she was employeed with the temple for 16 years

her she was a member of the temple family and it is a real tragedy not only for the temple but for her and family" in addition to the 4 brander was given. the judge also told her she needs to do 250 hours of community service. outside of court brander wouldn't go into the reason why she took the money. we'll hear more on her side coming up tonight at 5:30. jason marks 10 on your side. new information is emerging in the hannah graham case. suspect jesse matthew, junior appeared in court today. matthew is charged with capital murder in the september 2014 disappearance and death of the 18-year-old university of virginia student. graham's remains were found about five weeks after she disappeared. prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. they're also now revealing they believe graham got into a car and rode into a neighborhood. a bloodhound tracked her scent to a mulch pile near an old factory where lawyers believe she died. matthew's defense team is

cause affidavit used in search warrants that was used to seize matthew's orange car and his hessian hills apartment. the judge is deciding whether to have a hearing on the issue. his lawyers claim the route police say a louisa county sheriff's office bloodhound took to track graham is different than what witnesses and surveillance video actually shows. matthew also faces first-degree murder charges in the 2009 death of 20-year-old virginia tech student morgan harrington. in june, matthew was convicted of sexually assaulting and attempting to kill a woman in fairfax county. the judge handed down three life sentences to matthew in that case. the u-s state department refuses to confirm a claim by north korea that it is holding an american citizen prisoner. c-n-n reports a man identified as kim dong chul is accused of spying and stealing state secrets. chul says he used to live in fairfax. chul told a c-n-n team he stole nuclear and military secrets. he claims he wasn't

through the information. what you need to know, before you fly. tonight safe after a scary situation on the side of the tallest building in houston. the washers became stuck near the 71-st floor of the 75 story chase bank building this morning. there was a motor malfunction with their scaffolding system. rescue crews put a rope around the men and guided them to safety through the 71-st floor window. no one was hurt. a maryland appeals court has postponed the trial for a second baltimore officer charged in the death of freddie gray. jury selection was supposed to start today in the caesar goodson case. a judge ruled last week that officer william porter must testify against goodson. porter claims he has a right not to incriminate himself. porter's trial ended in a mistrial. his re-trial is scheduled for june. an appeals court is now deciding whether to uphold the decision ordering porter to testify in goodson's case. goodson drove the van that carried gray from the site of his arrest

the police station. goodson is charged with second-degree murder. a massachusetts judge has ordered a man accused of killing a two-year-old girl to be held without bail. this is video of michael mccarthy in court today for his arraignment. he is charged with killing bella bond. she became known as "baby doe" after her body washed up in the boston harbor nearly five months ago. mccarthy's lawyer says his client knows nothing about the little girl's death. bella's mother is behind bars on a charge of accessory after the fact to murder. the mother of the so-called "affluenza" teen wants her big bond reduced. tonya couch is in court this afternoon for a bond hearing. here's a live picture from the courtroom. her bond is set at $one million dollars. her attorneys say the amount is excessive and unreasonable. authorities accuse couch of helping her son ethan leave the country to avoid a probation hearing that may have led to jail time. he was on probation for killing four people in a drunken driving crash when he was 16. ethan couch is still in

u-s largely depends on whether he decides to contest his deportation. a mexican judge has granted the teen a temporary stay --- halting deportation proceedings. mothers against drunk driving has launched an online petition demanding couch's case be transferred to adult court. madd says transferring him to adult court gives the criminal justice system a chance to hold him accountable -- by making sure his probation goes beyond his 19th birthday in april. mexican officials have started the process to extradite the drug lord, known as el chapo, to the united states. but authorities say it could take up to a year before he's actually on american soil. over the weekend, mexican police captured the most wanted drug lord, joaquin guzman. guzman had several warrants in the u-s for smuggling drugs attorney has already filed six motions challenging the extadition requests. bigger headlines when rolling stone announced, guzman did an interview with actor sean penn. this video shows the raid

marines fired shots as they barged into the safe house. police say he was hiding in the house in the video -- but managed to get away during the shootout. he escaped through a secret doorway hidden behind a mirror and down to a tunnel leading to city drains. he was captured hours later on a highway. the islamic state group is warning of "worse" attacks to come. this after an hour long attack on a mall in baghdad today . gunmen set off a car bomb and launched a suicide attack at the entrance to the mall in the iraqi capital, and then stormed the complex. 18 people died. iraqi authorities say troops killed two of the attackers and arrested four others. a bad morning for a car owner in missouri. a water main break caused a sinkhole to open up under the car. no one was hurt when the car fell in. the rear wheels stayed on the road --- but the rest went in the water. crews brought in a crane to lift the car back onto the street. then they loaded the car onto a wrecker and hauled it away.

video of a volcano explosion out of hawaii. dozens of people were recording when several rocks fell into the lava lake inside the kilaeua volcano, causing this massive fireball. scientists say the large explosions can only happen when the lava lake level is relatively high. experts say the blasts do not pose any dangers to nearby homes. kilauea has been erupting since the early 1990s. oregon police are looking for the guy who slipped a python down his pants. and it was all caught on tape. check out this video from a portland pet store. watch as the guy in the hat makes his way to the snake tank. in the next shot, you can see him reach in and pull out a 2-foot long python. he quickly stuffed the python in his jeans before waddling towards the exit. the shop owner says the guy made off with a rare, expensive breed of snake. a black pastel

we're back at 4:00 with a disturbing new study about smoking. almost half of american teenagers who have never used tobacco themselves, are exposed to second-hand smoke. that comes from the centers for disease control and prevention. despite bans on smoking in public places, researchers say 48 percent of kids are exposed in private settings. 16 percent of teenagers said they were around smokers in their home. 15 percent said they were around smoke in vehicles. and 27 percent said they were exposed to it at work. scientists say second-hand smoke increases the risk of cancer and other deadly illnesses. the red cross says there is an urgent need for blood and platelet donations. this is one of their slowest times of the year since people are so busy during the holidays. this is video of the recent "every drop counts" blood-drive that 10 on your side sponsored last month. if you're interested in giving: here are some blood drives tomorrow. 10 am to 2 pm at centura college on denbigh boulevard in newport
