nicole: the wavy weather app has hour-by-hour forecasts anytime you need them. a lot to piece together in a standoff situation that left a police dog dad and a suspect in the hospital. tom: the incident cap police on edge for hours. it all began around 6:00 last night and lasted until 1:30 in the morning. keith richardson shot and killed the dog, raised his gun toward police and that is when officers were forced to open fire on the suspect. reporter: we found out keith richardson is very familiar with guns. in fact, he works for a gun shop. a neighbor said he was texting the suspect throughout this ordeal. it all started after richardson found out his wife was cheating.

he confronted her about it, she left the home and went across the street. he was going to call the man and say leave my wife alone. reporter: this is what a neighbor says lead to this. >> we are still trying to communicate. reporter: police say his wife called, saying he was threatening to kill her. >> i was texting him back and forth saying this is not going to end well for you. please surrender. reporter: at one point, richardson walked out of his house, to his car and then back inside. then he came back outside and tried to arrest him using a dog. richardson says -- then richardson shot the dog. >> they already busted into his house. he managed to get one of them

tried to get the other one went police shot him in the leg and sick to their dogs on him. when he went down in the dog was all over him, that is when he took the gun and shot the dog. it was totally in self-defense. reporter: after seven hours, he was arrested on several charges. for more than 10 years, he worked as a manager and firearms are at bob's gun shop. one of the owners says it because of the severity of the there. reporter: richardson is in critical condition and the officer involved in the shooting is on administrative duty. tom: if there are any updates, wavy.com. nicole: sentencing day for the man at the center of a deadly bar fight. he will spend more than a dozen years in prison for killing a man. the fight over a football game

reporter: two families are suffering because of what happened at the bar that night. the judge agreed no one, not even ronnie sisko meant for anyone to die but he still chose a sentence close to the maximum. >> i'm glad it was close to them maximum. reporter: it happened after an argument about football that got out of hand. witnesses say he was drunk and obnoxious and threatened the man's brother. you can see him head for the exit and then the hit that caused his death. ", he says no one regrets that moment more than he does. >> i've seen him break down and cry and i've never seen him cry like that. reporter: the judge says he understood he didn't mean to

might hand down a life sentence. but then he went through a long list of his problems with the law going all the way back to 1992. his family testified that was all in the past. >> doing good and working, going to school and trying to keep his life together. he had already done lot of time locked up but did not want that anymore. reporter: but the judge said that kind of life seem to find him whenever he wasn't locked up. now he will be in prison 14 years and his victims family hopes even longer. >> that might be the best thing for him, so he doesn't hurt another human being out here. nicole: police are investigating the death of a two-month-old baby. the call came in from a home on deep creek boulevard. the medical examiner's office will determine how the infant died. tom: saying nothing can mean a lot, especially in the bob

nicole: a woman who stole thousands of dollars from a jewish temple was in court this morning. tom: she was a bookkeeper at the temple for 16 years and left the job in 2014. a couple of months later, an outside auditor noticed missing money. the judge decided to suspend her jail time because her father paid the $60,000 back to the temple. >> she was employed with the temple for 16 years and it was -- she was a member of the temple family and this is a real tragedy not only for the temple

announcer: from the station on your side, you are watching wavy news 10 at 6:00. nicole: with an explosion of joy -- of drone sales in hampton roads, maybe you got one for christmas. tom: experts believe in 2016, americans will purchase around one million drones. nicole: but like driving, there are some rules of the road in the air. we've got a look at the do's and don'ts of drones in hampton roads reporter:. reporter:from 2014 to 2015, the number of pilot citing run-ins with drones in the air more than doubled according to the federal aviation administration. last month, the faa ruled on new rules and regulations, so what do you need to know? >> everybody wants to fly. reporter: the pictures on the wall give you a glimpse at the work he does.

at hobby town usa -- >> i just got into this four months ago. i bought a small one from walmart. once you get something bigger like this model here, that is when you have to get into the registry. but you just register online. they usually come in with some knowledge that there are rules but they ask us to clarify the rules with them. reporter: faa rules say you cannot fly higher than 400 feet and you have to maintain a line of sight with your drone. you cannot fly over groups of people or within five miles of an airport. the faa released an app called before you fly. it takes a gps track and shows you where to fly the no-fly zones. >> it's like driving a car.

so it is really cold and that is what we have got through the area. through wednesday evening, i just updated this forecast model before we went on the air. 41 degrees, dropping down in to the 35 degree range and then we will start to rise as he wins become more southwesterly. lots of sunshine in between and then we see a few more clouds by 3:00 in the afternoon. i'm going around 53 degrees for a high temperature at 3:00 in the afternoon. now we get some interesting stuff. last friday, i was talking about the possibility of a flake or

bruce: a surprising return to the playoffs provided a great party for redskins fans who returned to their cars last night disappointed, although hopeful for the future. i really thought if f e redskins could put it all together at home they had a good shot at beating the packers. but washington is still not good enough to be a really good team in the season ended with a 35-18 loss to green bay. it looked as if the redskins might be able to out play aaron rodgers but earlier mistakes like this one with desean jackson, he just did not extend the ball in front of him.
