to hampton roads. that will include transportation issues and sea level rise. look for her reports starting today on wavy news 10 at carolina of the coast guard has been temporairly relieved of duty. the coast guard says admiral stephen metruck relieved captain sean murtaugh. a spokesperson says it's because of loss of confidence in murtaugh's ability to command. captain reassigned to the 5th district in portsmouth for now. norfolk officers are talking about the bond that broke with the death of one of their police dogs. this is a big story we've been following since monday. police say 58-year-old keith richardson shot and killed their dog krijger. it happened during a standoff that started sunday night and went into the morning. we spoke with officer jake clark, a k-9 handler in norfolk. clark was not there for the situation on land street and couldn't comment on what happened. but, he introduced us to his partner, basco,

"we day. and then when we go home, we go home together. that builds a bond that's (sot is partially under vo) 1:20 - 1:27 "to lose any that no one can put into words." the nofolk police department posted a message about on its facebook page. it said in part: "he served n-p-d for three years and faithfully gave his life to protect ours. rest in peace, krijger. your work is done, but never forgotten." a department spokesperson said there will be a service for krijger, but they have not announced plans yet. police say they fired back at richardson after he shot krijger. richardson is still in the hospital. he was in critical condition and the hospital won't release an update. but police say the suspect is expected to live. police say this all started with a domestic dispute. officers went to the home on land street. a little before 1:30 monday morning,

krijger to arrest richardson, but officers say he shot the dog. richardson's neighbor -- on the other hand -- says it was all self defense. gene strickland, neighbor/witness :53 - 1:14 "they'd already busted into his house. he was trying to make sure his dogs were taken care of and they were ok.he managed to get one of them and put into his car. he was trying to get dogs on him. when he went down and the dog was all over him, that's when he took the gun and shot that dog. it was totally in self defense there. richardson faces abduction and gun charges. we've also learned he worked as a manager and firearms instructor at bob's gun shop in norfolk. a shop owner said richardson wouldn't be able to work there again, because of the serious charges. a newport news school is closed so workers can remove lead paint. administrators say workers at hilton elementary school were stripping old paint monday when they found lead- based paint. they stopped working and brought in cleaners and performed air quality tests. they started cleaning the old paint

still working on it today. hilton will stay closed until air tests are back to normal. administrators will let parents know when it's safe for students to come back. police say two men robbed students at odu. officials say 21-year-old antoine royster and 20-year-old kahlia jackson, of portsmouth, robbed students at old dominion university, saturday. we had originally reported royster was a student at norfolk state, but a school spokesperson says he is not registered at n-s-u this semester. the pair reportedly had handguns when they demanded personal items from the victims. it happened just after 4 in the morning, in a dorm parking lot near killam avenue and 43rd street. officials say o-d-u suspects within 10 minutes. we spoke to a student who says staying safe on campus is about being cautious. sots c7 ashleigh hicks - odu senior 15:21:16 "i do and i don't, i take the proper precautions, i don't do anything to put myself in harm's way, so it's just a matter of like, your mental state, don't do anything you shouldn't

forecast. someone stabbed three people to death, including two young kids -- in ohio. two of the victims were and eight. this is video of ambulances and medics at the scene in columbus. witnesses describe is as grisly. police say a person of interest in the killings went to the hospital with injuries. detectives are trying to figure out what led up to the murders. and three people are in the hospital because somone stabbed them while they were shopping at a goodwill in alabama. wintesses say a man with a knife came into the store and started attacking one of his victims, before he started attacking two employrees. but a good samaritan in the store says teaming up with several other people put a stop

ramundo says: "he went to lunge at him with two knives and all three of us jumped on him. and unfortunately two more- the other two employees police arrested the suspect. the extent of the victims injuries aren't known. four people died when the exploded. this happened in northfield, ohio, which is south of cleveland. fire investigators say the dead are a family of four. an explosion around 8:30 last night. a witness says he saw the fire shoot about 30 feet into the air. fire investigators are trying to figure out what caused the house to explode. police in california shoot and kill a man after he lead them on a chase. police say it ended after the man hit another car with his car. police have not said much about what happened. there is still no word on what lead to the chase or why the officer decided to shoot. a witness who was working nearby shares what she saw. come out by the balcony and i saw one of the police officers pointing at two cars, the ones that crashed right there." --butted to-- (lt. anthony vairo, san interview all of the parties involved, including the officers that were involved in the shooting, then we'll have more information for you." police have not released the name of the driver, but say he was in his 50s. the two people in the car he crashed into went to the hospital. a judge denied a motion by jesse matthew's lawyers to throw out evidence taken from his apartment. matthew is charged in the 20-14 abduction and murder of u-v-a student hannah graham. his attorneys accused police of misleading a judge to get a search warrant for his apartment. the judge rejected the motion, saying there was just cause for a search. it was also revealed in court that a bloodhound picked up graham's scent in matthew's car and that the dog tracked her scent to a contruction mulch pile in charlottesville. matthew's attorney will be back in court on january 21st to try to have other evidence

another univesity is embattled comedian bill george washington univesity has taken away degree. the schools says the made there decsision in light of quote "renewed distress" who are survivors of sexual assault. in october, the university said that it degrees. dozens of women have accused cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them over the last four decades. meanwhile, his attorney's are trying to get the sexual assault dropped. drivers up north are dealing with some awful road conditions. the evening commute last night in minneapolis could be considered dangerous. snow and high winds made drving extremely hard. the highways in the twin cities metro area looked more like a parking lot. minnesota state patrol reported more than 170 crashes, and that backed up traffic for iles. and those condidtions are not expected to improve for today.

a sherriff's office in wisconsin hosts a program that pairs shelter dogs with jail inmates. lauren winfrey explains how the initiative known as "a new leash on life" helps inmates get a fresh start. (sot: jeff ulleweit, inmate) "she looked like she gained some weight since she left. yea...." jeff ulleweit is talking about bella -- a former shelter dog who was the first to find a new home. (sot: jeff ulleweit, inmate) "definitely when they get adopted, that's the best. we just had four puppies like six weeks ago, and that was a lot of fun, four at one time." (nats) "sit... sit..." jeff along with a few other selected inmates works to train and care for former shelter dogs at the dane county jail work-release center. (sot: jeff ulleweit, inmate) "oh, it's great. you learn a whole bunch. you know you have to put yourself in the dog's position to know how they're thinking and why they think that." the program started almost a year ago and since then has helped eight dogs get adopted.

thousands of dollars. 10 on your side has been following temple israel's case for months. in court this week -- leslie bradner admitted to taking more than $60 thousand dollars from the synagogue. bradner was the bookkeeper at temple israel in norfolk for 16 years. she left the job in 2014. a couple months later an outside auditor noticed the missing money. the judge decided to suspend her jail time because bradner's father paid the money back to the temple. "she was employeed with the temple for 16 years and everybody got to know her she was a member of the temple family and it is a real tragedy not only for the temple but for her and her family" bradner got a 4 year sentence but the judge suspended it. she also needs to do 250 hours of community service. court documents show bradner took the money to help pay bills. today -- you can learn more about a new project meant to help with traffic problems in hampton roads.

more are injured after a car bombing and shooting. after setting of the carbomb at the entrance, gunmen went into the mall and started shooting. several buildings and vehicles are badly damaged. isis put a statement online after the attack, saying four isis fighter carried out the attack. the terror group says it picked the mall as a target because it is a place shiite muslims gathered. they also warned of a bigger attack in the future. meanwhile, iraq's defense ministry released new video showing iraqi fighter jets performing airstrikes on isis targets. a statement released along with the video says the jets killed many terrorists and destroyed equipment. isis fighters still control many parts of northern and western iraq. a new movie based on the escape of "el chapo" has had an unexpected boost in publicity after he was recaptured last week. the movie "el capo: the escape of the century" is scheduled to open in mexico friday. this comes just days after the arrest of joaquin guzman, the movie presents an

hypothesis of the reason behind guzman's arrests. the director is saying this is a fictional account. the movie will be released in 105 theatres throughout mexico. today marks the sixth anniversary of the deadly, devestating earthquake in haiti. the magnitude-seven quake hit haiti the evening of january 12, 20-10. the earthquake was centered just fifteen miles away from the capital, port-au- prince. accounts of the death toll vary, but some reports say more than 315- thousand people died. more than 60-thousand people are still homeless because of the earthquake. the mother of the so-called "affluenza teen," is out of jail. she was able to post bond after a judge lowered it. the bond for tonya couch was initially set at one-million dollars. but the judge lowered that to $75- thousand at a hearing yesterday. she will now have to wear an electronic monitor on her ankle. couch is accused of helping her son get out of the country to avoid a probation violation hearing that could have led to jail

tonya couch will now undergo a mental exam because her lawyers say she can't go on trial becaus of mental illness. more than 80 whales are stuck off the coast of india. take a look at this video. you can see several beached whales. a top governement official says the whales began washing up on shore yesterday evening. he said rescuers have managed to get 36 of the mammals back out to sea, but the appear to be disoriented, and some of then found their way back on the beach. the offficials added that short-finned pilot whales travel in groups, and the abscence of a leader confuses them. a car in missouri was in the wrong place at the wrong time, and a sinkhole ended up swallowing it. it happened early yesterday morning. police say a water main break caused flooding on the road, and eroding. crews closed off the street to stop the traffic, but it was too late for one driver, as the water quickly pooled around her car, and eventually the pavement gave way. she wasn't hurt. but workers eventually filled the hole and

a man gets arrested at miami's airport after allegedly causing a disturbance in mid-air. the man is accused of shoving a flight attendant. witnesses say they heard the passenger arguing with the attendant, using four language. authorities say he went to the back of the plane, and that's where a a sky marshall held him until the plane landed. you're looking at cell phone video captured by a witness. the passenger sitting next to the man says a bottle of booze fell out of his pocket when he got up. young says: "we see that he was arguing with people around. he was using bad language and then the stewardess came and he was very rude to them." an artist is looking to break the world record for a series of murals across several buildings. roberto mamani and his team of 40 painters want to break the record for the height and size of the murals. the paintings will span seven 12 story buildings and more than 65-hundred square feet. they are going to be painted on a set of buildings being used for housing project. mamani and his team hope to be their paintings soon. brewers in denver and indianapolis have teamed up to create a new beer. it's inspired by a common connection between the two cities. north denver's "factorum" brew house and indianapolis's "tow yard" brewery are joing "oatmaha." the name is inspired by manning's "omaha" play call. the brewers are making the beer in denver, where manning currently plays. they'll also release it in the indianapolis area, where manning played for more than a decade. brewmasters are hoping
