stories. an officer-involved shooting in newport news. this following two other people found shot dead inside a van. and another breaking situation in hampton. police are searching for someone who jumped out of a car during a traffic stop. we begin with that officer-involved shooting and deadly double shooting in newport news. this all started around 11 this morning when officers found two people dead inside a van at 14th and wickham avenue. police found a possible suspect on roanoke avenue and say they shot him. all the details are still unraveling. 10 on your side's matt gregory is live in newport news working to learn more about what happened today. one of the suspects is in a hospital tonight. police continue to look for a second. while they try to piece together how and why someone shot the two men in a van, police say this started around 11 oclock when the van crashed into a parked vehicle. the call changed from an accident to a shooting as police arrived. officers found two men dead inside the van.. each had gunshot wounds. police said witnesses

of two suspects. officers tracked one of the possible suspcts on a nearby street. police shot at him and a bullet hit him in the stomach. officer couldn't find the second suspect. detectives scanned through evidence inside the van as well as what led up to the accident. neighbors stood by the scene for hours unable to get home. jim bradley / lives near figured it was somebody that just had an accident. when i get in people tell me there's been some shootings. shocked." 13:47:04 that suspect is in an area hospital tonight. coming up at 5 oclock we'll have more on what a witness tells ten happen. thats in in one hour on wavy news at 5. in newport news matt gregory side.

breaking news - this time in hampton. police are still looking for someone who jumped out of a car during a traffic stop on i-64. the search for that person pushed thomas nelson community college and the o-d-u peninsula higher education center into lockdown. both have since been lifted. 10 on your side's liz kilmer is live outside the college with new information. liz? those alerts were issued just after noon - following reports of an active police search. about two hours later the lockdowns were lifted but many questions remains. chopper 10 overhead- spotting police with dogs searching a neighborhood about a half mile north from thomas nelson we're told this all started when state police tried to stop a vehicle that was driving recklessly on westbound i-64. during the stop it was determined - we're told- that someone in the vehicle had a warrant out for a burglary. someone in the back passenger seat reportedly jumped out and ran across the interstate - toward thomas nelson. both thomas

peninsula higher education center went on lockdown. we spoke with thomas nelson students- who say it was an alarming couple of hours- they knew little about what was going on and sat in silence and fear. c2 tyler nelson 01:03:17 it was ridiculous it was tense everybody was uptight im just over there trying to keep comedic relief because you know no one wants that on their mind, it's a really serious situation" thomas nelson students say they heard over an intercom that they could leave around 2-- however we are being told that the suspect who fled is not in police custody at this hour - hampton police are assisting state police in this search an earlier alert sent out by the odu peninsula center stated that this was connected to a shooting investigation elsewhere-- we are now told that is not the case

more breaking news --- congressman scott rigell will not run for re-election in november. the 2nd district representative made the announcement today. in a letter to the citizens he represents --- rigell answers the question why leave now? rigell says "the answer is found in why i set aside all else and sought the office: to build a strong house majority that would check and balance the party that then controlled both political branches of the federal government." he adds ... we have been the driving force that has reduced discretionary spending. " rigell's term expires next january. he's speaking to reporters right now. we will have that sound for you as soon as we can get it. more breaking news to get to out of middlesex county. state police are on the scene of a deadly plane crash. we're told it happened just after two. police found an ultra light aircraft about an hour later. we're told someone was dead inside.

the man died. a 22 year old elizabeth city man appeared in a courtroom today to hear the charges brought against him. 22 year old aeron etheridge is charged with sex offense second degree and first degree kidnapping in the rape of a 17 year old motel clerk. tonight only on ten, the suspect talks to andy fox. we met aeron etheridge as he arrived in a white van with other prisoners. he arrived for his first appearance in the rape of a teenage clerk. he didn't say a lot especially as he was leaving because his court appointed attorney told him not to talk. we wanted to ask econolodge. tricked her into bringing soap to the room, then jumped her as she walked in. locked the door, and according to police raped her. we asked etheridge about the charge as he was entering court, and we spoke to the chief police investigator. aeron etheridge/suspect sgt. darrell

today. a witness said he saw press brutally beat harmon in november of 2014, then drive harmon home. that's where police found his body. a woman is in the hospital after a violent home invasion in portsmouth. she was shot last night inside a home on queen street. that's near london boulevard and martin luther king freeway. the victim is listed in critical condition. police say three suspects got into a car and drove off after the shooting. we're working to find out if anything was taken from the home. newport news police are investigating another shooting that happened last night. someone shot a 17-year-old boy. police found the victim on 18th street and ivy avenue. the bullet hit his back. we are working to get more information from police. a man is in the hospital after a shooting in hampton. it happened around 9-30 last night on martha lee drive. police say the victim's injuries aren't considered life threatening. detectives are investigating a motive and searching for a suspect. newport news police are still working to identify of robberies. detectives want you to

april. it's from the quick pick grocery store on jefferson avenue. police say two men came in, pointed a gun at the clerk and ordered him to the floor. one of the suspects grabbed money and cigarettes before both ran out. the second unsolved robbery happened in september at the c-v-s on warwick boulevard. detectives say a man came in, demanded money and fired a shot into the ceiling. that suspect ran out with money from the registers and an employee's cell phone. if you recognize any of these suspects --- call the crime line. the norfolk police department says it will honor it's fallen k-9 on tuesday. there will be a private memorial service for the law enforcement community at the norfolk police k-9 range followed by a burial with full honors at the garden of the pines pet cemetery in virginia beach. the public is welcome to pay tributes along the funeral procession route. police say keith richardson shot and killed krijger. it happened during a standoff on land street that started sunday night

eluding after an incident tuesday night. 10 on your side wanted to know if the mayor should have been charged with a felony. our jason marks took our questions to legal expert. jason what did he have to say? he believes the wright was given the wrong the charge in this case. let's remind you what happened mayor's car has an expired inspection sticker. watson says he tried to pull kenny wright over but the mayor wouldn't stop. it started what the sheriff calls a slow speed chase. the mayor did stop when police got involved. sheriff gave the mayor a ticket for the inspection sticker but yesterday he took out a warrant for felony eluding. 10 on your side spoke with an attorney who says felony eluding is usually reserved for high speed chases when other lives are put in danger but he believes what happened tuesday night wasn't the case. 01=1:02:20 "i suspect the magistrate heard evidence from the sheriff that he felt that he was endanger by the mayor driving off but the mayor drove off

a deadly terror attack in indonesia tops headlines around the world amateur video shows the explosions near a starbucks cafe in the capital. the footage shows one of the bombs going off. then bullets flew between police and five gunmen. this all happened this morning as people headed to work. security cameras show crowds scattering in fear. the starbucks blast shattered windows. only

indonesia's police say people affiliated with isis carried out the attack. the gunmen are among the 7 people killed. 19 others were hurt. at least five people are dead and 39 others hurt after kurdish rebels detonated a car bomb at a police station in turkey. the rebels then attacked it with rocket launchers and firearms. the force of the blast destroyed the station's wall and caused a house close to the station to collapse. a man is in custody for the murder of an american woman in italy. 35-year-old ashley olsen was discovered dead in her apartment on saturday. she suffered two deadly skull fractures before being strangled. investigators say witness testimony, d-n-a analysis, surveillance camera footage and olsen's cellphone led them to the 25-year-old suspect. cheik diaw recently came to italy from senegal. witnesses report seeing olsen and the suspect leaving a disco together early friday morning and walking into her apartment. three americans died in a bus crash in honduras.

an update on one of our breaking news stories state police tell us two people now face charges that put thomas nelson community college on lockdown. we're told police are still looking for another person. state police tried to stop a vehicle that was driving recklessly on westbound i-64. the driver of that car - 19 janelle quicho now faces reckless driving charges. police say 21 year old dehjan williams was in the back of the car - he's been charged with possesion of marijuana. during the stop we're told a second, male passenger jumped out of car and took off. state police say he is warrants. both thomas nelson and odu's peninsula higher

congressman rigell - let's listen in. a portsmouth councilman has paid a 15-hundred dollar fine issued to him for speaking out about an session. the city acknowleged the councilman bill moody says he wants his money back! 10 on your side's joe fisher is live in the newsroom with the details. joe. anita -- this policy prohibiting council members from speaking with the public passed the council in septemeber. councilman bill moody has stood opposed to the policy from the

four months later -- and violator. moody says the mayor and four council members issued him a letter about violating the policy, although they never mentioned specifics about his wrongdoing. moody believes the fine stems from a facebook post in early december, where he warned his followers about a discussion on the confederate monument on high street downtown. moody paid the 15-hundred dollar fine publically at tuesday's meeting -- but he tells me he has already reached out to the a-c-l-u in an effort to set the city straight. an online fundraising page, which has gotten donations from 50 supports, has already raised nearly two thousand dollars. e-o-s lip balm --- otherwise known as the evolution of smooth --- has been hit with a class-action lawsuit. the suit claims the company is misleading consumers while ignoring serious adverse side effects. the lawsuit claims the "summer fruit" version of the lip caused blisters and a rash to erupt all over the mouth one woman. she's part of the lawsuit that's asking the makers for damages... and for a warning to be added to the lip balm's packaging. e-o-s says the lawsuit is without merit. across the country are a lot richer today. three tickets hit the record-breaking powerball jackpot --- none here in virginia. here are the winning numbers. 4 - 8 - 19 - 27 - 34 with a winning powerball number of 10. the winning tickets sold in chino hills, california, melbourne, florida and munford, tennessee will split the nearly one-point-six billion dollars. even though you didn't hit the jackpot --- there were some winners in hampton roads. the 7-eleven at 2093 lynnhaven parkway in virginia beach sold a million dollar ticket. a virginia beach 7-eleven sold a 100-thousand dollar winner. several 50-thousand dollar winning tickets were sold across hampton roads. you can check the locations on wavy dot com. all new. virginia beach police have arrested the man they say kept an illegal hog farm. gary morris senior faces animal cruelty and other

late last month, officers say they found more than 100 hogs living in deplorable conditions near salem road and winston avenue. animal control officers took the hogs and found them new homes. decision 2016 the republican presidential candidates face off tonight in the first debate of the year. fox business network is hosting the debate at the north charleston coliseum and performing arts center in south carolina. it will focus on economic, domestic and international policy issues. here's a look at the lineup. seven candidates at the top of the polls will be on stage for the main debate. they are donald trump, ben carson, senators ted cruz and marco rubio, governors chris christie and john kasich and former governor jeb bush. invited to the undercard debate are senator rand paul, carly fiorina, former governor mike huckabee and former senator rick santorum. senator paul will not participate in the undercard debate. he

participate in what he calls "first-tier" debates. millions know him as the dark arts teacher in the "harry potter" films. british actor alan rickman has died. rickman's family says the actor passed away after a battle with cancer. in addition to "harry potter" --- his film roles include the villain hans gruber in "die hard", the wicked sheriff of nottingham in "robin hood: prince of thieves" and a wayward husband in the romantic comedy "love actually." rickman is survived by his partner of 50 years rima horton whom he married recently alan rickman was 69. check out this video of a massive oil rig fire from oklahoma. officials say more than 20 tankers burned. the heavy plumes of smoke forced transportation authorities to close a nearby highway. the fire burned for hours. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is unknown. there's 20 million dollars worth of damage. and this is what that looks like. crews are surveying the damage today. a former day care worker was found guilty today on 13 felony child abuse

sarah jordan was one of the two women accused of abusing children at minnieland academy in woodbridge, virginia. jordan was accused of spraying toddlers with a water hose, tripping them, and even encouraging them to fight each other. parents noticed a change in their child's behavior after picking them up from school. seemingly calm kids became more aggressive, had a fear of water, and would cry when dropped off at school. jordan's sentencing is set for may sixth. a woman faces charges following a police chase that ended right outside a television station. it was all caught on video. take a look as officers in montana tried to pull over this car with flashing lights for reckless driving. the woman who was driving eventually stopped outside of our affiliate station in missoula. you can see the surveillance video showing the driver getting out of her car and banging on the station door. two police cars drove up and the woman got back in her car. the officers surrounded the car and arrested her.

armed robbery. when the store clerk in indiana shamed the suspect, the suspect walked away empty-handed. it was all caught on the store security cameras. at one point, you can see the crook going around the counter to get the cash from the register. but it didn't work. the clerk convinced the bad gun away. chief greenwood police:23-:29) "he's telling him to get out!" butt to sot "and now he's lecturing him. he's pointing his finger, like a parent would." eventually the suspect ran off. police say don't try to argue with an armed robber. the smartest thing is to hand over the money so you won't get hurt or even killed. now to a follow-up about that stolen python that someone stuffed down his pants. it's back home at an oregon pet store. you may remember this video from earlier in the week when surveillance video caught a man stealing the snake. the pet store owner says a man walked into the store yesterday with a bucket and said "surprise, here's your snake." he told the owner he bought it from another man. the snake

authorities say drug smugglers were creative. u-s border patrol officers in texas discovered a huge shipment hidden in a batch of carrots. investigators found nearly three- thousand carrot-shaped marijuana packages hidden among the real thing. the street value of the drugs is nearly a half million dollars. this building is drawing crowds in taiwan. the giant blue building shaped like a high-heeled shoe is actually a church . it's still under construction. the building is made from 320 pieces of blue-tinted glass. it's intended to attract women worshippers. it's also designed to host weddings

wavy news 10 at 5 starts right now. matt sot: "im matt gregory in newport news,police say someone shot two men inside the van, what do police say happened to the suspects?" 01=1:07:16 "the sheriff acted in a juvenile manor no one can say he didn't" we continue to follow developments in portsmouth between two feuding city officials. andy sot: first at five -- we continue to follow breaking news in newport news. police are investigating a deadly double shooting - followed by an officer-invoved shooting. we've been following this story since it broke at midday. this is chopper 10 video of the scene. two people were found dead in a van in the southeast part of the city. officers believe they shot one of the suspects-- but a second could be on the loose.

a hospital tonight. police continue to look for a second. while they try to piece together how and why someone shot the two men in a van, police say this started around 11 oclock when the van crashed into a parked vehicle. the call changed from an accident to a shooting as police arrived. officers found two men dead inside the van.. each had gunshot wounds. police said witnesses gave them a description of two suspects. officers tracked one of the possible suspcts on a nearby street. police shot at him and a bullet hit him in the stomach. officer couldn't find the second suspect. detectives scanned through evidence inside the van as well as what led up to the accident. neighbors stood by the scene for hours unable to get home. jim bradley / lives near shooting c0021 13:46:50 "when i come back to go home, the street is blocked.i figured it was somebody that just had an accident. when i get in people tell me there's been some shootings.
