far from it now. rain is falling on hampton roads-- in a big way. but there's good news for at least part of your upcoming weekend. chief meteorologist don slater joins us with a look at how long we'll be dealing with the wet weather. don? tonight: light to moderate rain through 3 am. lows: mid to upper-40s. winds: e to nw 10-15 couple of hours. expected around 4:00 or 5:00 and is continuing through much of the area. there is a gap already moving in. you can see it in parts of chesapeake and norfolk. this is letting up. there will be a gap during the evening. we are going to see more rainfall move through. we move in for a close view. this heavier rain is over the eastern shore down to the south end of virginia beach and areas of north carolina. the peninsula, you are looking

everywhere west of virginia beach, brain has let up considerably -- the rain has let up considerably. there are still scattered showers through the region. still a lot of rain in eastern north carolina. some of it is heavy. we are going to see around an inch of rainfall before it is done. here is where we are through tomorrow morning at 7:00. the rest of the weekend is looking good. i will tell you more about what we can expect for the weekend in a few minutes. tom: have the wavy weather app ready on your phone when you're out tonight and all weekend for the hour-by-hour forecasts. now to newport news and concerns about an uptick in crime. nicole: the police chief announced he is taking steps to take on criminals. this comes one day after a chaotic morning we reported on yesterday.

were cadre grey and quinton kelly. that happened minutes before the police were forced to fire on suspects. police are searching for a another person. he was found dead inside his home. police say he had trauma to his body. three deaths in one day, six since christmas. police say they have had enough. matt gregory is in newport news with department solutions to these problems. reporter: for the second year in a row, newport news police say they have seen the homicide rate explode at the beginning of the year. at a press conference this morning, the police chief said it showed the worst of the city but best of neighborhoods. the double homicide added two more deaths to the city's growing list. >> over half the homicides for several years running we have seen have been the result of

in high-risk haters. -- behaviors. reporter: police chief myers addressed the double shooting. he looked at the bigger picture across the city. >> starting with christmas up until the day, newport news police have respondedsix homicides. reporter: starting friday night, city police will have more officers out in force. the chief says he has asked the city manager to give his department more overtime. >> we get frequently crime mapping of hotspots. reporter: he also pointed out how the double homicides show what can happen when neighborhoods work with police. >> with eyewitness accounts, they were able to immediately radio out the description, detailed description, and

reporter: while more police hit the streets, chief myers once the community to work with them. >> we are going to put more police out there, and we are going to uphold our side of the bargain. we plead with the community, help us and let's partner in doing this. reporter: as far as the suspect in the double homicide in the hospital, police did not release his name and don't plan to tonight. they did say they will charge him with two counts of first-degree murder and other felony charges. tom: we have more details on this story. we will post updates on weekend on wavy.com. norfolk. police arrested four people. charges related to manufacturing and dealing meth.

detectives found the lab when they were serving a warrant. you can see more pictures from the scene on wavy.com. tom: the u.s. supreme court will review the case of former governor mcdonnell. a federal jury found him and his wife guilty of accepting gifts and loans in office. both were sent to prison but have been out on bond on appeal. the family tells 10 on the side they are delighted by the decision. nicole: new details on the plane crash that took a man's life in middlesex county. gilbert gregory was killed when his plane went down in a wooded area yesterday. and witness describes the horrifying scene. jason marks has the latest. reporter: he left middlesex county yesterday to go flying. i am told conditions were perfect, but something terrible happened in the air. plane about to crash.

>> i am like, oh, my god. that airplane is going down. boom. reporter: she was in her backyard and looked up and knew something was not right above the trees. >> the wings started spiraling. reporter: the plane landed in the woods with no easy access. crews rushed out and had to cut away branches to get to the wreckage. the pilot of the ultralight plane was gilbert gregory. he is an avid flyer took off miles away from where he went down. >> i told them there was no way that person made it. reporter: crews were able to get to him but not able to save his life. we are told his plane was equipped with a parachute but it was never deployed. it leaves everyone wondering

news 10 at 6:00 tom: a follow-up to last week's crash. part of the truck that win over has been pulled from the bay. the container is still in the water. he drove off the bridge last wednesday. he managed to get out and crews pulled him from the water. police say a man accused of running an illegal hog farm left

nicole: gary moore has been charged with animal cruelty. police found more than 100 hogs in deplorable conditions. investigators say at least one dead animal was left unburied. his daughter says his wife passed around -- a way around the same time this happened. tom: next, changes coming to our congressional delegation. it could be because of the trade of the district in hampton roads. nicole: a lot going on this week and including the start of restaurant week.

hrscene announcer: you are watching 10 on your side at 6:00. nicole: back with more possible changes coming to our representation in washington. tom: districts will be shifting and voters. that came earlier this week. yesterday, he announced he would not seek another term. now a familiar in the area says he might jump districts. andy fox as a look at the political shakeup going on. reporter: several sources confirm he has been making calls, randy forbes has, letting people know this might happen. call it a political switcheroo.

randy forbes' best chance to win, a politician's number one job is to win, his best chance to win might be to jump districts. >> congressman forbes is actively considering a bid for congress in the second district. repo support. he has an excellent reputation as being a solid member of congress. reporter: look what redrawn lines have done to the fourth district. the proposed district, blacks up to 43%. blacks traditionally vote democratic. the new democra -- >> under the star by the court of appeals, the fourth district is not look favorable to republicans. reporter: look at the 2012 election numbers from the new fourth restrict.

the congressman deciding not to run likely through randy forbes a political lifeline. >> it would not be a guerin, but he has a lot of support among rank-and-file -- it would not be a guarantee, but he has a lot of support among rank-and-file republicans. reporter: he is actively considering all available options. another big reason for randy forbes to switch to the second is to lose both would be devastating. >> do we want to give up all of our seniority? if he moves over, he stays on the armed services committee representing our area with seniority. reporter: the final lines will be reviewed by the supreme court. can randy forbes represent the second district, mostly virginia beach, even though he lives in the fourth district? the answer is yes, he can, as

that is the law. the former state senator told me he will not run for congress this year. andy fox, 10 on your side. announcer: now your forecast with chief meteorologist don slater. don: the rain arrived on schedule throughout the area. we've got a break. that will not last. we are seeing steady rainfall across the eastern shore and along the virginia beach oceanfront. farther inland, you can see more scattered rainfall. that has yet to move through but it will move through the region. here is the heavier rainfall that went through an hour or so ago. it is mostly gone, but we are seeing a pocket of heavier rain in the melvin area and then toward virginia beach. we are starting to see more scattered rain moving to the peninsula. . we have seen a break for the last 45 minutes and are starting to see more scattered rainfall. we've got some wind moving

north virginia beach quiet. it gets heavier out over the back bay area. north of williamsburg, scattered light rainfall. more moderate toward the northern neck. we covered the eastern shore. just south, seeing moderately heavy rainfall. light to moderate rainfall farther south. we have the other area off to our southwest that has yet to move through. the daylight hours of the weekend are going to be rain-free. we will see rain overnight that should end by 3:00 in the morning. i think we are looking good. where likely to see an inch of rain in the evening and

7:00 this evening through overnight into midnight, starting to see a let up in north carolina. still going on in the hampton roads area but not for long. by 3:00, pretty much gone. we might see a few showers over the eastern shore. those are moving off. we don't clear out entirely for tomorrow. not a bad day. a bit of a breeze out of the west tomorrow. sunday morning, there are some models which suggest rain mixed with snow during the late morning/early afternoon. a lot of models are not picking up on it. i want to alert you to the fact it could happen. look at the temperatures. 46, 47, 48. if we see snow with light rain, it will not stick. i think we will be fine through

the wind direction and speed, 21 miles an hour, 12 miles an hour. we have big wind through these areas. 44 miles an hour. cloud and rain moving through. our skies are cloudy. the rain has moved off the hampton roads cities. it is around 50 degrees. we will not drop beyond 45 overnight. during the day tomorrow, warming up to 59. tomorrow looks fine. isolated shower sunday. a lot cooler next week. bruce: the monarchs don't have time to brood.

i don't know what coach jones told his team at halftime. if i did, i probably could not say it on tv. but odu stormed back with a run to send the game into overtime. the monarchs were playing on a different level and looked to have the game in hand. >> doubled. they were hesitant. he gets it to go with 14 seconds. uab, no timeout. brown, eight seconds. lee knocked free. two seconds. 2.3 to go. to seconds. freeman from the court. bruce: a devastating loss for old dominion. you can see it on the face of coach jones after the game.

eight nfl teams are live with hopes of making the super bowl. coach tom and said he liked what he saw today from ben roethlisberger who returned to practice for the first time this week after messing up his shoulder last weekend. i'm pretty sure big ben will play but he will not have his favorite receiver. it has become apparent antonio brown is not going to recover from his concussion in time to play sunday against the denver broncos. with the injuries, it is hard to believe the steelers are even in this position. but who knows? we will have more nfl news at 10:45. nicole: rain, rain. don: it is going away for now. there's going to be more rain to filter back in.
