buidling. the roof even caved in. fortunately, everyone inside was able to get out before the firir department even got there. a woman who lives in the home told us what happened. came down stairs and bang on my door, saying my your apartment is on fire, get out the house. i rush my kids out of the house. and i went and got my god mother get her out of the house. and when we came out the whole top roof was on fire. firefighters were still putting out hot spots three hours after this started. as soon as they tell us what caused it, we'll let you know. today, people across the country are celebrating the leader of the civil rights movement, doctor martin luther king junior. you'll find lots of events around hampton roads honoring his memory. in norfolk this morning, people gathered for a ceremony and a march. the event had live music and some inspirational speeches. after the ceremony, people marched to the martin luther king monument on brambleton avenue. they layed a wreath at the monument.

hampton roads held its king junior community leaders breakfast. the event was created to honor dr. king's legacy. awards are handed out to those community. norfolk native wilber james was the keynote speaker at the event. he is the president of toyota motor manufacturing in kentucky and was named on of the top 100 most influential african-americans in corporate america. he says communities need to come together to continue progress. "still today the work is not yet done. if you look at what's happening in our communities today, we still need to come together and identify the issues we need to address to make this a better place." and in chesapeake, a nationally known minister held a breakfast to honor doctor king. the president of the national organization stand bishop e.w. jackson honored police officers at the event. he says officers are part of the fabric of the

the few who commit crimes shouldn't be grouped in with the rest. high school students were also awarded scholarships at the event in washington dc, attorney general loretta lynch spoke at the the annual martin luther king breakfast for the national action newtwork. lynch says it is important to continue to celebrate the victories of the civil rights movement. but she said it's even more important to continue to fight for progress. lynch also promised the department of justice will work to insure equality for all americans. prejudice, but she can guarantee justice. government officials are now talking about the three u-s citizens abducted from baghdad. two members of the iraqi parliament say the citizens were invited to an event near baghdad when they were kidnapped. secretary of state john kerry says work is underway to try to find the americans and get them home safely. kerry says: "well i can just tell you that we are in very direct contact with the iraqi authorities. we have a good sense of what may have happened the people are following up on it and that's all i can really say at this time. there is a very full effort going to find them as soon as possible." kerry says: "we have pretty strong indications where this might have emanated from and we're working very hard with hopefully we can secure their release." kerry also responded to critics of his deal with iran to release american cruz and marco rubio called it a sell out. kerry defended the decision, saying the

americans out as soon as possible. we'll have more on how the released prisoners are doing at 12:30. searchers will not be giving up on finding marines missing off the coast of hawaii. rescue teams have been looking for any sign of the 12 marines since their helicopters crashed thursday night. the family and friends of the marines are still holding out hope that they will be found. that includes michelle grochalski and her son michael. they are waiting to hear any word about their friend, sergeant adam schoeller. (michelle grochalski/family friend) "he's a very caring, outgoing person. there's just not enough words i could say. his heart is so big." sergeant schoeller's family has traveled to hawaii. they released a statement thanking the people who are praying for the safe return of schoeller and his fellow marines. we can now show you the man deputies say is behind a deadly shooting in gloucester. we first told you about this as breaking news sunday morning. four people were shot -- one of them killed.

helped them track down18-year-old dijon whitter of hampton. the shootings happened early sunday morning after a large party near ditchley road and gill lane. that's in the ware neck area of gloucester county. investigators say one of the victims flagged down a driver near the shooting scene. lexus walton/gloucester county ((c81 32:09)) "i couldn't move in the house, so i didn't think that this many people were going to be here and ((c80 29:45-29:55)) "the everyone tried to rush out of here, but the cops told them they couldn't leave." witnesses say more than 150 attended that party. witter is at the gloucester county jail without bond. investigators say icy conditions, speed, and no seatbelt all added up to a deadly crash in sussex county over the weekend. state police say 74-year-old nancy leigh smith died when her car crashed into a tree on route 31 - east of route 617 yesterday afternoon. another person in the car was also hurt.

may have been speeding. she was not wearing a seatbelt. we're working to learn more about a plane that made an emergency landing in our area. 10 on your side is hearing from people still stuck at norfolk airport, 24 hours later. norfolk international airport says a united airlines plane was heading from newark, new jersey to santo domingo in the dominican republic. it made an emergency landing just before noon yesterday. a spokesperson with the airport said there was a problem with the boeing 7-fifty-7's right engine. the plane landed safely with more than two hundred people on board. passengers tell us the airline is going to "try" and fly them out this afternoon. no one wants to finish last. yet that is exactly where hampton roads is when it comes to creating jobs compared to areas with a similar population. a recent study by the bureau of economic analysis shows our area has made little progress in creating jobs over the last few years. we've recently seen stores closing and massive shipyard layoffs. but there are people out there who are working

skydiving accident afternoon. james stremmel died after a dive at the airport in franklin county. witnesses say he made a hard landing. the owner of the skydiving center says stremmel was a very experienced skydiver. he jumped nearly every weekend -- altogether, he had done it more than 18- hundred times. the f-a-a is looking at the case. a man is in custody after authorities say he shot and killed a police officer in ohio. it happened in the village of danville, northeast of columbus the knox county sheriff says early this morning, they got a call from a woman saying police officers in danville were in danger because her ex- boyfriend had weapons and was looking to kill an officer. 20 minutes later, danville officer thomas cantrell was found dead behind a building, without his gun. about an hour and a half after officer cantrell died, authorities found the suspect trying to run away from a house. police arrested and charged herschel jones. and in utah, a police officer is dead and

authorities say a man shot them. police officers doug barney and john richie were responding to a car crash when they saw cory henderson and a woman walking away from the scene. authorities say as officer barney went up to them, the suspect shot him in the head and killed him. he ran away -- but then officers caught up and they started shooting back and forth. they killed henderson in the shootout. officer richie was hit by at least three bullets. he is in the hospital in stable condition. police are still trying to figure out why henderson started shooting. the woman he was with is still on the loose. police are investigating after an officer in saint louis shot and killed a man inside a fast food restaurant. authorities say last night, the suspect had just robbed the kentucky fried chicken. a witness flagged down a police sergeant and told him about the hold-up. when the officer went into the restauraunt, the suspect raised a gun at him and refused to drop it. that's when police say, the officer shot him. the police department is still investigating exactly what happend.

custody after they say he caused a three-hour lockdown at penn state. the daily collegian reports the suspect is a father who threatened to hurt his two children who go to school there. he was reportedly not in the area when he made the threat, and police arrested him away from campus. officials say all school activities are going ahead as normal. people in flint, michigan are scared to drink the city's water. tests found the water supply is contaminated by lead. reverend jesse jackson led a rally for justice yesterday to protest the governor's response to appointed an emergency manager in 2014 to flint. the manager then switched the city's water source to save money. officials reversed the move when tests found increased lead leves in residential water and children's reverend jackson called for the governor to reimburse residents who paid for poisoned water. reverend jesse jackson/ rally leader "nobody can avoid the impact of this. the fact that gm said it rots cars... it sure rots

the people of flint have been betrayed by their own government. the people have been betrayed ." musician cher said this past weekend she would help the people in flint. she partnered with a water bottling company and promised to send more than 180-thousand bottles of water. there are a lot of people in florida who don't have any power because of a strong storm over the weekend. high winds tossed trees and debris all over the place. crews in the town of golden gate brought in some extra help to clear trees from downed lines before they could get to work. many residents are hooked up to well pumps, and with the power out, they can't get any water. residents describe just how intense the storms were. have pulled in police k9s and helicopters to help look for this boy. this is zeb gross. he was last seen at his home on john pickney lane near patrick henry drive. police tell us that was around seven this morning. a spokesperson for the fire department in williamsburg says zeb doesn't have a history of running away. they also said, he does not have coat. 10 on your side's erin kelly is in wburg if you have seen zeb, please call police immediately. an explosion in turkey killed one person and hurt three others. it happened in a school near the syrian border. turkey's state-run news agency said ambulances took the injured people to a local hospital. they did not say what caused the explosion. there was damage to a garden at the school, and a car parked in the area. the school evacuated and the mayor of the city where it happened says no children are hurt. the mayor told turkish television that the explosion may have been caused by mortars fired from syria. the iraqi defense

video of what it says are airstrikes against isis militants and their hideouts. the footage is said to show attacks in salahuddin province, about 126 miles north of baghdad. a statement attached to the video said the airstrikes destroyed a number of isis properties and killed several militants. dozens of people had to jump into the sea after the ferry they were riding on started on fire. this happened in the bay of plenty in new zealand. media there says the coast guard and police were called in to help get people out of the water. several passengers went to the hospital with minor injuries. however, all 60 people on board are accounted for. the boat sank. tennis season is back and the australian open is underway in melbourne. but the season open is clouded by a possible scandal. the four governing bodies of tennis reject new reports of widespread match-fixing. they're responding to reports from b-b-c and buzz-feed news. both say they've obtained secret internal files implicating 15 players

billboard says this is bowie's first number one album in the u-s and his biggest sales week for one of his albums since 19-91. blackstar came out on january 8th, bowie's 69th birthday. he died from cancer last week. bad news if you're a chocolate lover. your sweet tooth is going to cost you more money. the wall street journal is reporting the price of chocolate is up nearly 40 percent since 20-12. there are a number of factors causing the price to go up. the raw material used to make the treats is going away because of bad weather and farming techniques. the demand for chocolate was at an all-time high last year. cuba's capital saw some pretty significant flooding last night. huge waves went over a seawall and into the streets near havana's famous coastline. emergency workers tried to help people get off the flooded roads. a local resident says it has been 10 years since the city has seen flooding like this. and we haven't been the only ones dealing with a winter blast. check out the scene in tokyo earlier this
