dead after gunmen went into a university and started shooting. officials say the attack started just after classes began for the day at bacha khan university. soldiers and police came and started a shootout with the troops. nobody has claimed responsibility, but many in the region say it is remenicent of a taliban attack on a school in 20-14. we'll have more important details on this for you at 12:30. later today, norfolk city treasurer anthony burfoot will be in federal court. burfoot is expected to plead not guilty to eight felony counts. those charges include conspiracy to commit wire fraud and perjury. an indictment says federal prosecutors think burfoot was part of a plan to defraud the city. it says starting in 2005, burfoot used his position on city council for personal gain. he allegedly promised votes in exchange for favors from development companies like tivest. if convicted, burfoot could be in prison anywhere from five to

between 14th and 16th streets. officials tell us they have not decided whether or not to vote. the proposal would add a new pier, hotel, restaurants, a time share resort, and more parking. private money would fund most of this $245-million-dollar project. we can now show you pictures of an accident where a truck crashed into a house. it happened last night on carters grove court in hampton. police tell us six people were inside the home when the truck crashed into the garage. officers have not said what led up to the crash or what charges the driver faces. two people were in the car when the accident happened. no one got hurt, but the driver, a 50-year- old woman went to the hospital as a precaution. we are still the driver will face charges. we're working to learn more about a deadly car crash in portsmouth. it happened last night on ansell avenue near george washington highway and frederick boulevard.

vehicles crashed and a female passenger died. the cause is under investigation. new at midday -- work is starting on another new elementary school in norfolk. "shoveling" students and faculty were there to help break ground on the new ocean view elementary school building this morning. it's all part of a project by norfolk public schools to build five new schools in three years. construction is starting 90 days ahead of schedule. the future of a local smokehouse is uncertain this morning after a fire destoyed the building. only chopper 10 was above the scene in surry county. firefighters used water from hydrants and a nearby creek to control the fire at the edwards virginia smokehouse. most of the employees were out to lunch when the fire started. no one got tough loss for the workers. janda mueller edwards smokehouse employee (32)

several residents in oregon have had enough of protesters and their takeover of a national wildlife refuge in their town.

came out with a strong and his supporters. that message --- please leave. bundy and his group have occupied the refuge for 18 days because they are upset over federal land use. tuesday night, bundy and about a dozen of his fellow militia members came to a town meeting. the surprise appearance made the meeting even more emotionally charged. (cheering and clapping.) a law enforcement official says the wildlife refuge is being looked at as an active crime scene. a campaign staffer for doctor ben carson died in a car accident in iowa. the crash happened yesterday. this van with four carson staffers inside flipped over on an

hit it. 25-year-old braden joplin was killed. carson suspended all campaign events for the next several days so he could be in omaha, where joplin passed away in a hospital. doctor carson says joplin was an example of how things could be done with kindness and compassion. afternoon. police got a call from a woman screaming for help. when they got to the apartment, they saw five pit bulls attacking a woman. one officer shot and killed four of the dogs. animal control officers took the fifth. two women, a man, and a boy, all went to the hospital. police are trying to figure out why the dogs started attacking. an elderly woman in georgia froze to death while trying to help her wheelchair bound husband. this happened last thursday. 74-year-old roy riffe accidentally fell out of his wheelchair outside. his wife maria tried to help him, but she fell, and couldn't get back up. the two spent the night outside. roy had a coat on and survived. maria wasn't wearing anything to protect her from the cold and did not survive the elements. officials say they found the two just 20 yards apart. a big winter storm is pushing its way through the midwest and it is dumping a lot of snow.

what i'm saying. and she sees its really become like a movement. it's an amazing thing that's happening." trump also says palin can play a role in his administration if she wants to. scientists in brazil are testing solutions for the zika virus. those tests are showing genetically modified mosquitoes can help reduce the population of the type of mosquito that carries the virus. brazil is scrambling to stop the spread of zika. the outbreak started in october. 35-hundred cases have been reported, and now there are five reported cases in the u-s. the virus is known to cause a rare condition in newborns that leaves them with smaller than currently no medicine of vaccine for zika. people in chile's capital had to deal with a cloud of smelly smoke after sections of the city's garbage dump caught on fire. winds spread the smoke all over santiago, which affected all the

officials say the fire started because of a massive heat wave. residents say the smoke is toxic and blame city officials for the mess. officials say emergency services are working together to try to put the fire out and stop the spread of the smoke. people in mississippi held a rally outside the state capital about keeping the state flag the way it is. this comes after several cities and schools across the state stopped flying the flag outside their buildings because it features the confederate emblem. a few dozen people came to the rally, holding state and american flags. mississippi lawmakers could take up the issue of changing the flag during this legislative session. rescuers in california are suspending their search for a missing ski instructor. carson may was last seen skiing in whiteout conditions at the sugar bowl resort thursday. officials say hundreds of rescuers fought through snowstorms to search for the missing 23-year-old. rescue dogs and three helicopters were used to

a highway in california becomes a rocky road. take a look at this! a closure of officials say heavy rain caused the rockslide, forcing them to close for a ten mile stretch in both directions. no cars were hit by the rocks, but the road blockage did cause a minor accident. crews had to work all day to get the road cleaned up. (sgt. lincoln mckenna/california highway patrol) "with all this rain that we're now receiving in such a short amount of time it's definitely affecting the hillsides around us." even though crews did eventually clear the road, they had to keep it closed because more rocks fell. geologists are taking a look at the hill later today. take a look at this incredible video of the sun from nasa. scientists say we are looking at a solar eruption. it happened back in mid-december. look at the upper right of your screen. that movement you see is the eruption, which sent
