in cities across hampton roads --- crews are getting ready for snow. 10 on your side's liz palka is live in virginia beach we are live right by mount trashmore. it's still a bright sunny day here now. but cold enough the people here exercising at the park are bundled up. the area could look a lot different later. virginia beach's public works department is watching the weather and for a change in conditions. spokesman drew lankford says, given what they

doubling up their crews. they have what they call "frost patrol." on a normal winter night, those trucks go out and frost patrol will be out at 7 - so right after the evening commute. they'll treat those trouble spots. then trucks will go out again at 1 am and do the same. and if it's bad enough, lankford says they also have a couple thousand tons of salt and sand mixture ready to go. that's what's going on in virginia beach. as wavy news 10 continues at 5, 10 on your side.

10 on your side's liz kilmer is live in newport news. crews here are ready to go in newport news and will be ready to go all night - they are carefully monitoring this storm however - officials tell me right now, the weekend forecasts are more concerning. still - though, equipment is ready, supplies are stocked. city spokeswoman kim lee says they have over 700 tons of sand - you can see some here. and in that dome - of brine. and as you can see, lots of trucks and plows. lee tells me they have 9 spreaders to spread treatment, however, crews here aren't pre-treating for this storm tonight, but street prepared to put down salt and sand as needed. elsewhere on the peninsula - i'm told pre-treating roads with by that point - we'll be looking at the next storm system, and again, right now, crews believe that could be the real storm of concern. this one - they are ready to tackle on the peninsula. live in newport news, liz

weeks of 2016. falling oil prices taking stock prices down with them. disappointing numbers from ibm contributed to today's sell-off. at one point the dow fell 566 points earlier today, closing well off those lows. it finished down around 250 points. norfolk city treasurer -- anthony burfoot - has pleaded not guilty to federal corruption charges. a judge set a jury trial for this may. 10 on your side's erin kelly was in the courtroom and spoke to burfoot's lawyer. he says they plan to fight the charges -- and calls the 30-page - 8-count indictment a "false accusation." federal prosecutors allege that between 2005 and 11 -- burfoot used his positions as councilman, vice mayor and chief deputy treasurer to get something in return. they say he took money and gifts in exchange for official actions that would benefit people who had interests before the city. the indictment says burfoot and his alleged conspirators took steps to hide a scheme. outside court today, burfoot referred all

new information in the chesapeake massage parlor raids. (chopper vids) on friday local police and federal agents searched 6 massage parlors. in all they arrested 14 women. 10 on your side's matt gregory has worked to get the latest information on the case... 4 of the women had their arraingment today. including an owner of 2 of the massage parlors. she faces the most charges. police charged 44 year lihong cao (ts- ao) with

virginia beach fire department says a faulty space heater sparked a mobile home fire. it happened this morning on ritzcraft drive at the county view mobile court. no one was hurt. investigators say the fire started in a back bedroom. they believe a portable space heater with damaged wiring caused the fire. the fire department says this fire is a good time to remind you to inspect heaters for cracked or broken plugs or loose connections. if there are any --- don't use it. never leave a space heater unattended. turn it off while you're sleeping. and keep pets and children away from them. hampton police are investigating why a driver slammed into the side of a house. it happened last night on carters grove court . police say six people were inside the home when a pickup truck crashed into the garage and damaged the home. two people were in the car. the driver went to the hospital with minor injuries. no one inside the house was hurt. the house is condemned because of all the damage. portsmouth police are

out what led to a deadly two car crash. this was breaking last night at 10. it happened on ansell avenue near george washington highway and frederick boulevard. a woman in one of the cars died at the scene. we have new information in a shooting in newport news. police have more details from the victim. the shooting happened back on january 9th on 23rd street near roanoke avenue. this is a new picture of a possible suspect vehicle. the 23-year-old victim says at least five shots were fired as the car went by. he was hit in the back and treated at the hospital. the suffolk fire marshal's office is investigating a school bomb threat. a city spokesperson says someone made the threat by a note written on the wall of the girl's bathroom at john f. kennedy middle. investigators determined yesterday's threat was not credible. an actor and real life hero. a hollywood star is talking about coming to the rescue after this crash. residents are concerned one city's plan for the future doesn't include remembering the past.

there's concern in portsmouth that city leaders are giving up on the city's rich history. for years, the city council's list of priorities has included a past. but history has been deleted off a new list the council is set to vote on next week. 10 on your side's joe fisher joins us now to tell us about the worry residents. joe. anita -- the city council says these "vision principles" are the council's priorities for how they the year 20-30. these priorities guide them in making everyday decisions. but councilwoman psimas tells me while these are the council's priorities -- city staff, including the city manager's office,

writing the new principles. she wants to see the history prioritylist. so do a lot of portsmouth residents. especially those i talk with in the hisotric olde portsmouth's history dates back to the colonial era -- and obviously much history made throughout the civil war. that's why people like business owner joe elder are re- think this new list of priorities. ((c175 23:24)) "the idea of trying to eliminate some of our history in my mind is ridiculous." from this list -- that directly coincides with what some call "portsmouth's dysfunction" that part of the story in about an hour. i'm joe fisher, 10 on your side. one school division is considering a change to its calendar that would have students spending less time in the classroom. the virginia beach school board will soon vote on a proposal to reduce the number of instructional days by three. 10 on your side's brandi cummings has been working on this developing story all day. brandi, why the change? stephanie- everyone i spoke to today told me it has been a challenge in the past for the division to start school after labor day and end before graduation, while incorporating teacher workdays. so board members will consider changing the 183 instuctional days. one proposal could lower the number of days to 180, while another could mean a 181-day school calendar. during a school board meeting last night, the virginia beach schools calendar committee presented a 183-day calendar proposal. but

the navy is providing bottled drinking water to some of its employees in chesapeake after tests showed a high level of a certain chemical. we're told water is being provided at n-a- l-f fetress - just as a precaution. the chemical is commonly found in fire extingushing foam that is used during training exercises on base. the navy says the chemical found is not regulated by the e-p-a right now - but they decided to play it safe. michigan governor rick snyder says he's failed flint residents. but the governor says he is working to fix the crisis. he's committing millions in state funding and deploying more

flint's water became contaminated with too much lead when the city switched its water source in 2014 as a cost-cutting measure. virginia tech played a big role in uncovering the problem. a worried mom called a researcher in blacksburg and a team went to flint and tested the water and found this. (amy pruden/professor in that immediately sounded the alarm." lead contamination can and learning disabilities in children and kidney ailments in adults. the national guard, state employees, local authorities and volunteers have been distributing lead tests, filters and bottled water. the u.s. coast guard has suspended the search for 12 marines who were aboard two helicopters that crashed off the hawaii coast. it's now a recovery and salvage effort. the search started thursday when a witness on a beach reported seeing the helicopters flying and then a fireball.

on the ocean floor but no sign of any marines. searchers also discovered all four life rafts. but there was no sign that anyone had ever been on board. u.s. customs agents are now using facial comparison technology at john f. kennedy international airport in new york. the biometric readers match a person's face to their passport. passports have a chip embedded in them that matches the photo page. the computer programs will screen passengers arriving from countries where visas are waived and to randomly check on returning u.s. citizens. a real-life dramatic role for actor jamie foxx. he sprang into action after a car crash near his california home. "the way that i found out about it was at about 8:30 and i heard the crash, and i heard someone yelling. so i get in my car, come down and call 911. when i get here, the truck is over on it side and and it's in flames. the california highway patrol says foxx and another good samaritan helped free the driver after his truck rolled into a ditch monday. officials say the driver was speeding when he ran off the road and hit a concrete pipe. troopers say foxx and the other man broke a window and cut the seat belt to pull him out. yesterday the driver's father thanked foxx for saving his son. na64t jamie foxx/ actor "i don't look at it as heroic. i just look at like you just had to do something. you just had to do something. brad kyle/ driver's father : "i'm just so happy that it happened him.) that's right. i mean

to jump in when it needs to be done, but how many of us really would? whether this person's famous or not, i'm just so glad and so happy." paramedics took the driver, 32-year-old brett kyle, to the hospital with third- degree burns and a broke collarbone. officers arrested him on suspicion of dui. check out this close call inside a convenience store in australia. surveillance video shows a woman in purple and black walking toward the counter. then a car plows through the front glass wall and knocks her to the floor. she quickly got back on her feet and escaped major injury.

around the world the taliban has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack today at a pakastani university. gunmen stormed bacha khan university and killed at least 20 people. 23 others were wounded. as police and soldiers rushed to the campus --- the attackers traded gunfire with the troops. the pakistani army says the gunbattle lasted for three hours. several explosions were heard from the area of
