works crews are planning for a worst case scenario. dominion virginia power is preparing for heavy snow and high winds across the commonwealth. additional crews are being sent to areas expecting to get the brunt of the storm. the companies three regional storm response centers will be activated, too. if you have to report any power outages - go to wavy dot com - we'll have information you need to report those outages. governor terry mcauliffe declared a state of emergency ahead of this major storm. a state of emergency allows state agencies to help local governments respond to the storm through sunday. vdot has crews on the roads pretreating ahead of the storm. the virginia national guard is authorized to bring up to 5-hundred personnel on state active duty to help assist with the severe winter weather response operations. the guard plans to have people at key locations to rapidly respond if needed. possible missions for the guard includes transportation, downed tree removal and distributing food and

tragic news out of ohio.... a child is dead after an early morning fire at an apartment complex in columbus.. fire officials say a second child is in critical condition. the childrens' mother and an 11- month-old baby were treated at the scene, but they are expected to be okay. the mother had to be taken to the hospital because she was in shock. fire investigators believe the fire started in their basement apartment. firefighters also rescued three people trapped on a third story balcony. afghanistan's acting defense minister visits victims of a suicide attack. yesterday, the country's biggest media organization was targeted by the attacks. speaking after visiting the wounded in kabul's emergency hospital, the minister called on afghanistan's regional partners to unite in fighting "extremism and terrorism". s/ mohammed masoom stanekzai/ afghan acting are doing that here in afghanistan,

to all rain through by the evening. highs: low to mid-40s. winds: ne 5-15 mph. high pressure has control today, so we'll enjoy plenty of sunshine across the region. unfortunately, despite the sun, a northwest breeze will keep highs in the mid to upper-30s. (our average high is 48). tonight, we'll gradually see increasing clouds as our next storm system approaches. as you head out the door tomorrow morning, we will not see any falling precip, but make sure you have warm layers and an umbrella with you, because you'll need it as you're heading home from work/school. by late friday morning, a rain/snow mix will spread across the metro. farther north, along the northern peninsula, middle peninsula, and northern neck, we'll likely see snow to start. as temperatures warm into the low to mid-40s, we'll all see the transition to rain. it'll be raining for your evening commute, so that will make for a slow ride

astronauts scott kelly and tim peake shared their view of the aurora borealis from the international space station. the natural light display happens when a burst of the sun's gas and magnetic field causes a solar wind-- which is the stream of energy specks from the sun. that stream hits the earth's atmosphere... and there you go!-- lights! that stream hits the earth's atmosphere... and there you go!-- lights! you can see the polar lights from the ground... but it's a very different view than what the astronauts witnessed. peake called their view of the aurora "magical." finally, here on midday-- a show of beauty in the heart of winter could be seen today on the olt river in southern romania. a flock of swans made a stop there on their way south to a more mild place for winter. you can see the swans on the river - even though beautiful - stops like
