ground and now it's coming down heavy. that was expected. this is newport news james river bridge. a lot of snow falling there. it will stick. temperatures have fallen a bit in these places. fort smith, 32. chesapeake, 36. here is the radar and we have snow coming down over a good portion of the area of full's notice there is some green on the screen. probably a little sleet mixing in with that. and you have a bit of that rain on the south end. that does mix with sleet at times. as we get up closer to chesapeake, we have quite a bit of precipitation.

that one mind that is more of a mix. sleet mixing with some rain and snow at times. as we look at the middle peninsula, getting some snow reports up there. for the afternoon. afternoon. temperatures will warm up a bit and by the time we get to 6:00, more rain. i 11:00, eight will all be rain and temperatures warm up. i will talk about snow totals and more totals possible.

we are here with the secretary of transportation. you just got off the phone. what is happening? >> we will have a major storm event across the commonwealth. it has started here but we started being impacted in southwest virginia early this morning. eight-10 inches of snow there. the storm is moving across the state. all areas will be impacted in the next few hours. we are expecting up to three feet. around hampton roads, should change to rain later. we could have icing and very hazardous road conditions. joe: we are pretty lucky compared to virginia. talk about the trucks on the road. >> over 2500 uses of equipment just in hampton roads. most of the major highways have

brandy: it happened early this morning on hill street. chris is live there with new information. chris: good news for those 70 homes in the people live in them here in this neighborhood. they are able to come back to their homes. they were out for about five hours this morning. chesapeake fire department got the call just before 7:00 a.m. a couple streets back, there a tank that holds about 1.2 million gallons of jp5, a very volatile jet fuel. an abundance of caution. they evacuated the neighborhood, 70 homes.

and a half away for them -- away. we just got word that they are able to return. we are starting to see civilian vehicles come into the area. the shuttle bus from the fire department is bringing people back from the rec center. don: thank you. we continue to follow the winter weather as it moves across hampton roads. brandy: jason marks is in virginia beach. jason: it started coming down at 11:40 and it really started to come down. my photographer just said it's almost like getting hit with a snowball. very big, wet flakes. this is virginia beach boulevard .

you can see that line in the middle starting to stick to the street. public works crews are ready. they sent out a couple of trucks a little while ago. started to get out and they wanted to make sure the kids were safe getting home. i am told they have 3000 tons of go. if not, they can mix up another 3000 tons. in virginia beach today, it's how much are we going to get? >> that's a good question. we've kind of been watching this hour-by-hour for the last 48 hours. it keeps shifting. i guess if we had to say what it is exactly, we are thinking it will be a cold, wintry mix for part of the day.

late tomorrow afternoon, early evening. then more cold, slick weather saturday night. jason: they are expecting the worst of it here in virginia beach. they think when those temperatures start to drop, things will start to freeze. this is a meter that will show how the temperature of the ground is. you can see now, that's 32 degrees. that's easily enough for anything on it to's take. we are expecting the temperatures to rise tonight. this will all melt tomorrow night. that will be the main question here -- how much will it take tomorrow and could it freeze? something we will be watching over the next 48 hours. back to you. don: it's been interesting because we started this morning on the radar looking like things

a closer look and we started off with mostly a wintry mix but heavier snow starting to overtake a good chunk of our viewing area. you guys are fine along the outer ranks for a little closer to places like this, you have some moderate to heavy snow. these darker shades of blue to indicate some heavier snow and as it stretches up toward franklin, a lighter snowfall in portsmouth. what will happen here is we will go in between seeing some heavy snow back to light snow. toward virginia beach, it's mostly rain there.

is rain across hampton roads but heavy snow falling in the middle peninsula. when it becomes all rain shortly after 8:00 p.m. before we get to the rain, we will have some accumulation. about 0-2 inches for places like northern virginia beach. we have 2-4 inches in the dark blue. that includes portsmouth, hampton. 4 -- 4-8 inches in williamsburg. right now, chesapeake up to two inches. mostly rain southeast of their. after that point, it will turn

brandy: our winter weather coverage continues for a lot that continues -- our winter weather continues. have traffic troubles all over the area right now. precipitation was really just beginning to fall but things have deteriorated pretty quickly. i will show you what is going on. we will start on the peninsula where we see issues there. don't nine i am -- nine miles

several issues there on i-64 going on the back route through newport news and chesapeake down through that area for the eye when to call your attention to that interchange. i-64, i to 64, an overturned vehicle in this area. this area could see some delays. the west left shoulder is closed right now. you will not see too much travel where we are talking about right now because of what's going on. several areas to be concerned

there are several issues going on. don: part of the problems out there caused by the weather. let's get the latest from jeremy wheeler. jeremy: the snow rapidly increased. this morning, we had some dry air. and now the snow is coming down pretty good. this is the view of the james river bridge. definitely a lot of snow. starting to add up on some of the streets but so far, just adding up on grassy services. we getting that heavy snow. temperatures have dropped. upper 20's in hampton. we are still above freezing in

there is also a mix coming from the south. this is super doppler 10 in the ocean. into north east carolina, a mix. you are getting more in the way of snow. there is a snow been moving forward. might turn into more of a mix. back bay, you have rain and a mix. definitely snow in portsmouth, chesapeake, sleepy lake, deep creek, lamberts point. the snow is heavy at times. the smithfield, the also seeing those heavy bands.

like the lead home area. on the eastern shore, quite a bit of snow falling. this snow will continue through the afternoon but it will try to be more of a mix into 3:00 p.m. on the south side. you will get more of a mix going on. sleet mixing in at times. through the income of the temperatures start increasing between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. then it turns into all rain passed 8:00. i do expect amounts to accumulate up to an inch in northern virginia beach. 2-4 inches in fort smith, hampton, newport news. up to eight inches in gloucester.

not just yet. the afternoon, they will pick up but by this evening, wind gusting to possibly 45 miles an hour near the shore and down toward the outer banks. might let up a bit tonight and the wind will increase again tomorrow but they will turn out of the north. that will drop the temperatures late saturday into sunday and there could be more strong, gusty wind leading to some title flooding. we will have a longer look at those maps. we zoom in to the metro so you can see what to expect for the snow accumulations before it changes to rain. that's all coming up. brandy: make sure to check and see if your flight is still taking off. more than 1000 light have been grounded between virginia, maryland, pennsylvania, north carolina. several air carriers are letting people reschedule their flights

smith -- portsmouth are canceling activities. i spoke to a spokesperson for the city and she tells me they have worked crews monitoring the situations and the people working the day shift today will be held over and will work until 7:00 tonight and a new crew will come in and work a 12 hour shift and in the morning, they will reassess. they have plenty of snow plows and salt ready to go. around the corner from the downtown tunnel, really starting to line up as the snow is coming down. people are trying to get into right, stay home, and ride out this storm from the comfort of

the area is expected to get as much as 10 inches in the next 36 hours. don: more snow expected to hit the peninsula. brandy: erin kelly is in newport news where more snow is expected. >> the snow started to fall around 10:40 this morning for that -- morning. it started to get a little heavier just in the last hour. this is jefferson avenue full's that we see a bit of accumulation and over in the intersection right at main street and jefferson avenue, you can see a little patch of snow in the middle. we haven't seen any cars having issues so far. the city tells us they've had more than 760 tons of salt and sand. they will be monitoring the

the charlotte airport virtually a ghost town with no flights in or out. don: the same system set to bring a blast of winter weather too much of the east coast brought tornado like conditions to parts of mississippi last night. damage was reported across the southern portion of the state. trees came down on houses, blocking first responders. forecasters predicting a much calmer weather pattern friday night. ashley: it has kind of gone back and forth between heavier snow that has reduced visibility. we are actually seeing a little more sleet falling where we are in portsmouth. there could be a few raindrops mixing in.

as we take a look across the south side, heavier snowfall stretching from franklin. you can see a bit of a break in the action in chesapeake now but we are still tracking more moderate snowfall. it did change over to sleet. on days like this, the radar can only tell us so much. moderate to heavy snowfall. you can see we do have the heavier snowfall from gloucester. as we look at some of the storm details, the hands of snow and more of a mix down toward the south and east. the precipitation will start to move north. we actually see more of a changeover to a wintry mix.

merrimack, downtown tunnel, and our major area of concern is the i-64 and i to 64 interchange there. i believe we have a better view of it right now. we'll try to get to that in just a moment. you can see this is a several different views of what's happening outside. one area that have much more snow than other areas. some see some light precipitation. some have much greater issues. as for that interchange, an overturned vehicle at the twin bridges. that's right before you get to the interchange. that will be a delay for a while. as we get more information, we will be passing that along to you. don: snow on the road causing problems.
