nicole: let's start with andy fox. you tweeted some pictures of cars stuck. what do you see? andy: we are getting some freezing rain. vdot is saying the interstate and the primary roads are passable. they are reporting 2.5 inches of snow. that is what they are reporting. it has been a long day for everyone on the road. a lowly figure in the distance fighting against the driven snow. who is that guy who walks alone? it's a grad student. >> i am from bangladesh. it is a very warm country. it never snows. >> driving conditions were rough at times. tow truck operator brad had a busy day. >> hit the brakes. they lock up. your best bet is to put it in neutral. >> this guy fears nothing.

>> we found william, a seasoned snow veteran with good advice. >> stay home and eat snow cream. that's right. >> that is what everyone needs after a day like today. once again, 2.5 inches of snow. it is powdery. let's go to my colleague standing by in virginia beach. jason. jason: we started with the snow around 11:40, but now it has all turned to rain. we have wet streets out there. it is not bad for drivers. very light traffic. the roads are wet. when the snow started to come down, it caused everyone to rush to the hardware store. we stopped by over at fairfield

of stuff on stock. people were trying to get their shovels and their sand and all of the heating equipment they needed. it really was a rush to get to the store this morning. as soon as it opened, and by around 2:00 this afternoon, shovels and sand were hard to come by. >> snow shovels, ice melts, everything has gone. we ran out of ice melt yesterday. for the most part, everything is gone. jason: very hard to come by. good thing we did not need it. we just got a little bit of snow and it is now turning into rain. it is raining right now. wet streets. if you're going to hit the roads, they are wet, so be cautious when you get out driving tonight.

19 middle school students were on board. nobody was hurt. the driver of the other car went to the hospital. tom: hampton roads is just getting a light brush of the storm. all of virginia and north carolina are under states of emergency tonight. the governor briefed citizens on the winter storm impacts including a policy to keep you safe on the road. >> we do not want any individual stranded on the road. the highway patrol officers are checking every vehicle that is stranded to make sure there is no one in it. if there is, we want to help them. we are marking those cars to notify future people traveling by they have been checked for occupants. nicole: police are investigating a bank robbery. tom: officers sent us a picture

they say he robbed in the national bank around 2:00. police say he had a gun and got away with money. if you recognize anything about this individual, call police. nicole: dozens of check to speak residents are back home -- check achesapeake residents are back home. crews contained the leak and drained the take. no one was hurt. residents returned around noon. tom: this is a live look at what is happening in norfolk. the bigger flakes have already fallen. we will check in with joe fisher next. >> coming up, the city prepared for the snow, but how about the people who live in it? >> you are watching wavy news 10

tom: let's see how things are developing with matt gregory. matt: i was trying to figure out if it was snow or sleet, but according to don, it has turned into a slushy mess. it is all rainfall downtown. you can see the sidewalks are icy. i was looking around a bit. the roads are clear because i have seen crews coming through putting the salt and sand makes out. even though heavy rain fell earlier, by now the rain and the salt and the mixture has caused it to kind of dissipate and melt for the most part. it is going to get slippery as folks have been drying home.

not have to go to work if they did not feel comfortable. schools were closed. other people say they weren't as prepared as the government. >> i did not know it was going to snow like this, man. i'm just trying to get home. >> i had to use my arm to clean my car. it was going snow, rain, i thought it was going to turn to slush. i'm worried it is going to be ice by the end of it. matt: she might not be wrong. there is a strong breeze. it feels colder than it is. i did speak with that gentleman trying to clean off his car with his hand. my photographer and i helped him out and he got on his way. for the most part, it is turned over to rain. we will be monitoring this and have more for you in one hour.

tom: let's see how things are developing norfolk with the joe fisher. joe:the conditions here, not the best we have seen. right now we are getting the wintry mix back into the mix. that sleet we have been seeing. the main roads are fine, but we want to give you a look at the side streets as cars are coming down. a little bit of slush on the

you can see trucks are loading up with the salt and sand mixture. about eight of them on the road today. mainly treating the primary roads. we were following behind, getting some video of them, making sure everyone was able to get on by. we have seen anything from no activity to a wintry mix. we talked to a bunch of people today, including one hardware store, that did not have much left. >> it has been extremely busy. we have traction sand. the snow melt and shovels are gone. >> please don't drive in it. if you don't know how deep it is, you can get in trouble. we have blocked intersections because of that.

ice forms. slow down. avoid being on the roads. joe: while the roads here really aren't that bad, again, slow down and take your time. they are worried about the high tide tonight at 8:00. some neighborhoods will be underwater tonight and again tomorrow morning. that is what they are worried about. so on top of the street crews, they have their storm water prevention as well. nicole: we showed you a taste of this earlier, you are helping us tell the story by sending in your pictures. here is a great shot of a trampoline. this is from virginia beach. tom: looks like a five-year-old is trying to perfected the art of making snowballs. nicole: keep those pictures

tom: a more serious side of the winter weather, washington, d.c. one of the hardest hit areas of the storm. we are going to look at the capital. they were in the midst of a blizzard, up to two feet of snow. >> they had problems with just an inch of snow. nicole: the federal government sent most workers home. don: the other night in washington, it was a mess with one inch of snow. snowfalls that are that light are tough to predict and they are tough with the ground conditions. that is why they ended up with that skating rink and a big mess. snows that are big our user to predict. -- are easier to predict. ashley: what makes it

don: we will talk about that. things are going as planned as terms as when the snow begins to turn to rainfall throughout the area. it is happening now. you can see from our reporters in the field, they were getting wet, for the most part. it is transitioning over the peninsula. here is what is going on. a very ragged line and each time we have a sweep of the radar, it does term to change -- tend to change. it is reaching over hampton and newport news. all rain into virginia beach. frozen rain into chesapeake. you can see a lot of snow. it is not as heavy as it was earlier. we are's think a pocket of darker colors.

over from snow to a mixture that will continue to become rainfall during the next couple of hours. we showed you what is going on in terms of how much we have in the area. these are estimates. they are computer done. your results may vary. you can see it gets a little bit heavier. certainly heavier in two parts of newport news, maybe three inches of snow. 3.5 into the williamsburg area. cape charles, 2.5 inches. the thing is, this is transitioning over to rain. it is going to melt everything. we are looking pretty good in the evening hours. a big snow to the west. those darker colors, blue, again, huge amounts of snowfall going on. we have had reports of eight inches of snow into here. at 9:00, we've got 30 mile per hour winds.

2:00 in the morning, 4:00 in the morning, temperatures actually warming up and then starting to cool down again tomorrow. 39 at 3:00. snow, a little bit. not that much. on into the area, we are looking at a little bit of snow by the midnight hour tomorrow night. 4:00 on sunday morning and then sunday during the day, a high temperature of around 37 degrees. for more on what is going on, and some of the winds we expect, here is ashley baylor. taking a look at what we can expect as far as the winds and snow coming up during the day on sunday. ashley: all right. we do have our tidal estimates. we have been talking about the rain and snow. keep in mind we'll have this brisk north east wind, which brings a prevailing northeast wind. as we get closer to high tide saturday morning, water levels

saturday evening. we could see some minor flooding. if you are in an area prone to flooding, something to be aware of. talking about additional snowfall, not much. trace amounts into chesapeake. about half an inch. possibly over in inch west point. a higher amounts will be north of us. still covered in ice. hopefully the rain will take care of that. 29 in newport news now. we are closer to the freezing mark in portsmouth. the surface temperatures are going to make all the difference in whether you see rain or more of a wintry mix. 36 in chesapeake. 28 williamsburg. as we go into saturday, on and off rain. we will transition over to snow on saturday and we'll track light snow showers into sunday morning.

tom: police say a 10 on your side report helped them make two arrests. they got several tips after anita: interviewed the victim. they forced their way into the backseat of her car. they drove her around to sever atms trying to get cash before dropping her off on virginia beach boulevard. nicole: police arrested a man

two armed robberies. he is charged with armed robbery and kidnapping related to the incidence last month than this month. he is also charged with raking in entering. tom: you might be apple to help please find david jones, one of the stabbing investigations. police believe jones and the 33-year-old man were involved in an altercation before he stabbed him several times. recovering tonight. if you know where jones is, you should call the crime line. chris: an update on driving conditions in chesapeake on the border between the snow and rain. nicole: we hope you are staying indoors. if you have to go out, we are trying to keep you safe. there is rain on the road on 64

nicole: another check on traffic. traffic has been light. there have been issues on the peninsula. take a look at this. for example, right here, this is 64 westbound around jefferson avenue. that is what is happening on the peninsula two points north. we had that happen in camp perry. use caution and if you don't have to go out, don't. overall traffic looks good. some secondary pickups along military highway and virginia beach boulevard. for the most part, it does look good. we have this crash working in south county involving a tractor-trailer. it is on 460 west browned -- westbound and we just got an update about it. one lane is open westbound. keep in mind if you have to travel in that area. more winter weather coverage

>> now from the station on your side, this is wavy news 10. nicole: our coverage continues right now. we have a lot to talk about. let's get to it. what you see is not what you're going to get. don slater is in the super doppler 10 weather center to explain. don: we've got a lot of explaining to do. everything is going pretty much as we expected. that is the big part of the explanation. the rainfall is lifting northward and it is going to melt all the snow we got during the day today. we are not likely to see a big problem with the roads as we work our wayayhrough the evening hours. it will turn it into slush, a slushy mess in some areas and then it will be all rain. here is what is going on in the white picture. the biggest thing to remember, we have seen rain, snow mix

a mixture throughout the area. we move into hampton roads and you can see it is lifting north. it will occasionally waiver back-and-forth. the progress is generally northward. williamsburg, snow right now. you will see a mixture of sleet and rain and then it will change over to rainfall. these are estimates. i want to give you an idea. these are computer estimates. very slight amounts likely. really melting fast. it is going to snow for a while, but they've gotten huge snow. this is over eight inches in some areas to the west. that is what is going on in terms of the snowfall through the region. 6:00, we are expecting a mixture continue lifting northward and by 7:00, it is starting to encompass williamsburg.
