which is going to melt at the rain on the streets. 8:00, some story. 9:00, 34, 44, it will continue to warm up overnight and it will continue to turn into rainfall. by 11:00 tonight, i will be on the air to let you know about that and i will be on the air in just a couple of minutes with more information for you and update on the forecast. >> team coverage continues. >> erin kelly is tracking the storm on the peninsula for us and joins userin: the snow has switched over to rain. i want to show you the roads. this is jefferson avenue. it is a little bit slushy. we understand from talking to dispatchers, some of the calls have dropped off the last couple of hours. we spoke to one woman who was

maryland to take snow there. she expects to be there 15 days. she has been plowing snow for five years. what is your best advice were driving? >> stay home. i'm slipping in this track. erin: schools had a half day and we understand because of the conditions, the city closed all offices at 3:30 and no afterschool activities tonight. >> certainly better to be safe. it has been snowing throughout the day. >> we have been tracking conditions all day long. liz is live outside. what is it looking like? >> the snow stopped, but we have this rain-snow mixture erin was talking about.

chunks of ice bouncing off of it. you can hear it falling on the ground. the roads appeared to be clear. i drove in on them a few hours ago while the snow was coming down and i did not have any problem. that could be changing now as we have this wintry mix that is happening. even though the roads are clear, it does not mean people are not having trouble. there have been some weather-related accidents. i checked in with dispatchers and they've had some people involved in minor accidents where they are side swiping another vehicle or having trouble running into the jersey wall. those main areas where they are having troubles, downtown and midtown tunnel's coming out of the tunnels. they don't realize it is icy as they are coming out and maybe slipping into the wall. police are responding to those calls. public works trucks are also out working to make sure these roads

>> another check on traffic. speaking of the tunnels, there has been a crash on 164. you can see it to the left of your screen. over downtown, traffic looks ok in both directions. we wanted to make you aware of what was going on. we want to make you aware icy conditions have been reported on the bridge tunnel. use caution on all of the bridges and overpasses. they are still working the crash in newport news, 64 west browned -- westbound. this is a lot of what we have seen this afternoon. a lot of vehicles running off the road as a result of these conditions on the highway. we have seen that a lot. right here, jefferson avenue.

they have pretreated the interstates, the secondaries and primaries. avoid travel if you can and make room for the vdot trucks. >> other parts of the state are also getting hammered. in richmond, snow started falling this morning. our sister station giving this this look. and snow started moving in early this morning. video from our sister station in roanoke showing a time lapse and you can see quickly the snow started to pile up. >> whether it is snow or rain, it will have widespread impact. the governor has activated 500 national guardsmen and he says the state is ready. >> we have 13,000 pieces of equipment. we have plenty of salt, 650,000 tons.

>> the nation's capital is preparing. d.c.'s mayor urged residents to stay off the roads. >> we see this as a major storm. it has life and death implications and all residents should treat it that way. >> the north carolina governor reminding the folks in his state to stay home and off the roadway. >> we are asking everyone to be very careful. stay off the roads. spend some time with your family. >> 10 on your side is tracking possible storm related power outages. take a look at this video. earlier a couple of power lines went down and caught on fire.

most of them should be back on by now. there are no major outages at this time. there are a couple of outages we know about. one in virginia beach. 275 customers without power. and in hampton, 250 without power. an eta on when power might be restored, there is no eta. >> in north carolina, duke energy is reporting 16,000 customers are without power along the borders with tennessee and south carolina and in charlotte. no outages in need the northern part of the state. coming up, the storm is creating a travel nightmare for folks on the east coast. we have the latest on delays and cancellations. >> and we've got our eyes and we've got our eyes on the roads. this is a look on 64 east. it is raining right now.

>> thousands of flights have been delayed or canceled. take a look. green means on time. red means conditions are not so great. charlotte, north carolina has been in the red all day long. more than half a dozen airlines canceling all flight because of the weather. in d.c., not much better. mostly red. this was the scene earlier today at reagan national airport as passengers tried to get out ahead of the storm. by midday, the airport was

anita: travel on amtrak also being affected. several trains will continue running, but on a modified schedule. the train from virginia to florida has canceled all trips this weekend. passengers should keep a close eye on conditions and check with amtrak before going to the station. the storm is keeping police busy . officers have responded to more than 500 accidents. police have also responded to 400 service calls. a spokesperson says no fatalities have been reported so far. glad to hear that. continue to exercise caution. north carolina can't report the same. there has been at one fatality reported since the storm started moving in this morning. the governor said highway patrol officers have responded to more than 500 accidents and 800

we don't have the traffic we normally would. it has been a mixture of rain and snow throughout the day. we were in that border area between the rain and snow. regardless of what happens, the city of chesapeake will be ready. >> public works has been mobilized since yesterday pretreating roads. all of the crews are ready to go as needed. we have about 23 snowplows that will be deploying to take care of bridges and overpasses that will freeze first. with the forecast of snow, we started applying brian to bridges and overpasses and using the brine to allow the roads to take longer to freeze and gives

chris: a normally busy intersection. not bad right now. the department of public works says another threat needs to be heated, the possibility of tidal flooding over the next 36 hours. watch for roads that are normally overrun with water. chris horne, 10 on your side. >> with another check on traffic, a big problem on the south side on 164 westbound. two separate accidents coming from the west, traveling westbound into portsmouth and that is what is going around the midtown tunnel. downtown looks good. here is a look at 164. the crashes are not in this camera shot, but the conditions look slick on the road. be mindful as you travel.

>> now your super doppler 10 forecast with don slater. ashley: and ashley baylor. we have a team working around-the-clock on this storm. changing from snow to rain and snow. don: mostly from snow to rain. that has in the good thing. >> especially as we continue with rain taking over that is going to come packed some of these totals down. there will be a small window to measure the snow because the rain is going to take it away. don: for the south side, your window is changing over to rain. it will likely be water very shortly. temperatures are actually going to warm up. we've had a lot of concern because every night temperatures cool down. right? not tonight.

up and temperatures will warm through the 40's, may be near 50 degrees overnight. here is that rain-snow line. taking a look into the area, we will show you how much rainfall, snowfall we got. it is starting to change over now to rain and sleet and snow right up through here. that line will continue to lift northward. you can see it occasionally, it is a general trend that is very good in terms of the snow changing over to rainfall and snow and then finally all rainfall later on tonight. it has happened over chesapeake as we saw from chris horne and into virginia beach and it is starting to happen in hampton. i don't think it will be that far north into gloucester county. williamsburg, you've got snow and heavy snow on up into kloster county.

changeover to rain into eastern north carolina. again, the totals have been very light and they are melting away fast across the south side. for the peninsula, you can see what is going on. how does it compare? around one inch. before it melts, 1-3 inches. 3-5 is entirely possible into williamsburg. these are the same graphics i used yesterday. this is not our area. i'm not going to forecast out of our area, but this is what we are ending up with for friday. how much tomorrow morning? zero. it is going to melts. saturday and sunday, f u flakes of snow into the area as we end up with this much -- a few flakes of snow into the area as we end up with this much.

ashley: here is the forecast through the evening. here we go through 9:00. norfolk will be into the low 40's. farther to the north, up toward richmond, temperatures will still be a little bit closer to the freezing mark. temperatures will continue to warm up overnight. not as warm as 57. some people say that would be nice. watch as the center of the storm system moves directly overhead. a bit of a break in the action saturday morning. we will be tracking on and off rain showers through most of your saturday until we get to 3:00. as we get on the back end of the system, it will pull the colder air and will make the transition back over to snow after 3:00 saturday afternoon and it will continue through early sunday morning.

anchor: a live look outside. it has been a tricky one for sure. troopers responded to 121 crashes and 44 disabled vehicles in our area alone. there were hundreds more elsewhere. it continues to work 12 hour shifts state wide to do what they can to clear the way. nicole: team coverage were across the area. these are the people reporting on what you should expect to see from this morning through tonight. they are spread out across the area. nick: now what is next for the storm and don slater. don: 3-4 days we have been watching as this has drawn closer. we have been watching expecting the rain snow line to lift northward and put all of this into the rainfall. it is continuing to do so. that is the biggest thing i want

explain what is going on with their forecast in the evening hours. how far will it progress northward and when will it do so? it is a mixture right now quite likely for most of you into williamsburg of rain and snow and ice pellets. that tends to knock the snow amounts down. certainly the rain does as well. we want to show you where things are coming up. it is still over the peninsula. look at the temperatures. 35-40 across the south side. there is where things are by 9:00 changing over to rainfall into williamsburg. temperatures in the 40's continue to warm up through the overnight hours.
