were left in the cold. detectives in hampton worked through freezing temperatures this morning to try to find out who shot a man. we just got an update from police -- coming up in our first ten minutes. and let the thawing out continue. we've a look at the few remaining trouble spots in hampton roads. good afternoon and thanks for joining us this midday - i'm lex gray. we're coming off a bitter cold weekend with a lots of different weather problems. but they're finally moving on out! here's a live look at tower cam 10 at the skies over downtown norfolk almost all the snow is gone here on the southside - but the same doesn't hold true up the peninsula. let's get the latest from meteorologist jeremy wheeler in the super doppler 10 weather center.. rest of today: mostly sunny. warmer this afternoon. highs will be in the mid-upper 40s. winds south 5-10mph. tonight: partly cloudy. lows will be in the mid 30s.

tuesday: partly cloudy. warmer. highs will be in the mid to upper 50s. winds south 10-15mph. high pressure will control the weather today, and we'll see lots of sunshine and warmer temperatures. we'll warm up even more tomorrow with highs in the 50s. a cold front will move into the region on wednesday. this will bring some rain showers. it will linger near or just off the coast into thursday. meanwhile an area of low pressure will form off the coast and will push moisture back up against the front. this will cause some more rain. however, some of the area may see this wrap up as snow late thursday as the low moves monitored over the next day or two. it does not look anything like last weeks system. next weekend looks great. fair skies and warmer

let the clean-up begin! our morning crews found folks out and about on the peninsula - trying to get back to normal. some secondary roads in hampton still have ice lingering despite the sun. in newport news - many of the neighborhood streets are still a big mess. 10 on your side's jason marks spent the morning driving up and down the peninsula to show us what residents are dealing with. it's really a big mess. let show you want streets here in newport news look like and you can see why there is no school. a lot of the roads are just one big sheet of ice. the primary and the secondary roads look great but they were treated by public works and vdot. but crews dont come into the neighborhoods. there is no way school

call this weekend. no need to call for backup -- local neighbors grabbed shovels and dug out the fire truck. they even cleared the uphill street so firefighters could continue on their way. most of us will be done dealing with the snow and ice once it melts. but the effect of the storm will last much longer in mathews county. donk's theater has been an icon in the county since the 1940s. it's hosted famous entertainers over the years, and even earned a spot on the national list of historic places. but now - it's destroyed. the roof and some walls collapsed after winter weather blew through the peninsula. lynda smith / little ole' opry c0005 17:29:23 "it is a part of my family and it feels like a death. it really, to a point feels like a death in the family." 17:29:28 because of the extensive damage, this piece of history is lost forever. a county building official told 10 on your side whatever is still standing will have to come down as well. only chopper 10 can show us the best view of the winter storm aftermath. you can see what parts of the hardest hit peninsula looked like just yesterday.

during the storm this weekend. that meant - no heat and no hot water. it happened in the ben moreell complex near naval station norfolk. they say it started around noon on saturday - and nothing was restored until early sunday morning. they tell us they're not so much upset they lost heat - but that they felt help - and explanations did not come fast enough. marc sanders/lincoln military housing resident c0033 53:30 we kind of just sat around, we used heaters in our house to try to keep everything warm. we and bear with the roads for a bit and find food.53:48 the navy says they sent representatives door to door as soon as they were aware of the problem. but not true. our deanna leblanc is digging into the problem beginning 4. police in hampton are looking for a suspect who shot a man early this morning. we just found out from police -- the victim is doing better and is now expected to survive. the shooting

road, off east pembroke avenue. workers at a nearby convience store tell us they heard about 10 shots. investigators say they do hot have any discription of a suspect. hampton police also need your help finding the person they say shot and killed a man saturday night. police found 42 year old leroy garer shot inside this car - on darnaby avenue just off shell road. if you have information that could help hampton police with either of these shootings -- call the crime line. investigators in chesapeake say a fire in a chimney spread through a townhouse sunday night. that's why 6 people who live there will have to find somewhere else to stay. here's a look at crews responding to the dominion pines neighborhood last night. firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the second floor. they got it under control in about 15 minutes. no one was hurt. earlier in the day - another fire in chesapeake forced 11 people out of their homes. it happened in south norfolk. firefighters say heavy flames shot from the roof of this apartment on border road. it took them about

under control. they have not said yet what caused the fire. new at midday -- norfolk police need your help finding this man. detectives say he broke into chen's kitchen on tidewater drive just before two friday morning. surveillance video shows the man breaking into the store by smashing out a glass window. he stole money before leaving the business. if you have any information call the after a turbulent flight over the atlantic ocean. the american airlines miami to milan, italy when it hit severe turbulence last night. the pilot diverted the the flight to newfoundland. three flight attendants and four hospital. s/ jordan and karen case/ passengers :13 (karen) "we were just riding along and then turbulence, and it just kind of... the massive east coast storm is over...but cleanup is just beginning. take a look at the damage from downed trees in raleigh, north carolina. heavy snow, ice, and wind can make winter storms extremely dangerous when trees or other structures can't handle the extra weight. the winter storm slammed much of the east coast, killing at least 30 people. officials in some of the biggest cities up the east coast are encouraging their citizens to stay patient. (mayor bill de blasio, new york city) leave your car where it is. don't try to shovel it out today. it's not quite business as usual today, major cities like new york, baltimore, philadelphia, and the washington, d.c. are still digging out. in philadelphia, the flights startred going out again...other mass transit will slowly get back online throughout the day. the new york travel ban has been lifted since early sunday morning. subway and rail lines will run today but residents are encouraged to avoid driving. and for our neighbors to the north in the d.c.

virginia - federal and state government are closed again today. (gov. terry mcauliffe, (d) virginia) this was a major event. there was a tremendous amount of snow. i caution everybody. it's going to take a while to remove all of this snow. the d-c area saw about two feet of snow. beyond the snow, people on parts of the jersey shore found themselves dealing with significant flooding from a storm surge. residents say it was much worse than expected. hundreds of homes surrounded by about five feet of water. not even superstorm sandy did this much damage here. mayor christopher fox west wildwood, new jersey mayor "it's tough to get through. your talking about debris coming in front of you. boats coming off the waterway crossing in front of your path. its dangerous..very dangerous. just -- there's nothing that's not replaceable and west wildwood wasn't not the only shore town under water. ocean city and sea isle city were surrounded. further north, the damage

in belmar - a drone captured the before and after of emergency dunes in place. high tide brought big waves on shore in massachusetts. waves up to 13-feet tall crashed over abarrier wall - causing minor flooding. residents took precautions to protect their houses... boarding up windows facing the ocean. thankfully the surge was short-lived and waves settled down as the tide went out. here in hampton roads - some of us saw our typical tidal flooding in problem areas - like the hague in norfolk. usually - you'd see people walking around of roads in that area were shut down while the water was high. weekend's historic storm dropped nearly three feet of snow in some areas. this town in chester county was one of the worst hit areas. officials say snow fell at more than an inch an hour in some parts. a snow emergency for the region ended last night. v-dot teams from hampton roads are helping other areas in the state dig out. crews rolled out yesterday to help crews in northern virginia and lynchburg. these are pictures of them leaving shortly after sunrise sunday. 36 workers left with snow plows, spreaders, and motor graders to help vdot with critical snow clearing operations. they'll join teams already working around the clock to clear out the snow. the winter weather blanketed roads in mathews county and the gloucester area. while the roads begin to clear today, we still saw several car accidents over the weekend. and as 10 on your side's matt gregory will tell you - a piece of history taken forever by the storms. you don't have to know the history of donk's theater to call the collapse devastating.

people in alaska are worried about aftershocks earthquake. check out the impact of the quake from saturday morning. officials say the quake caused gas leaks and fires at four homes. they exploded and were completely destroyed. the quake also knocked out power to nearly five-thousand people. about 30 homes were evacuated, but no one was hurt in the quake. officials say it's one of alaska's strongest earthquakes in decades. a six-point-three magnitude earthquake shook spain's southern coast early today. it was followed by six smaller aftershocks. emergency services recieved 240 calls from residents who were alarmed. many people callled in to report damage to buildings, but thankfully there are no reports of injuries. the earthquake also knocked out power for many people. today students are staying home as crews inspect schools for damage. one town in ohio is dealing with contaminated water right now. schools are closed in sebring after water samples tested positive for unsafe

e-p-a is moving to revoke the license of the town's water treatment operator after it took three months to warn the public about the unsafe water. there is a water advisory in effect for pregnant women and for children. the ohio e-p-a is demanding the village fix the lead pipes and continue testing the water. in the meantime -- the e-p-a will provide up to 25 thousand dollars for water filtration for the village. this on the heels of a massive water crisis in flint, michigan. our sister station w-l-n-s joined members of a local church who reached out to undocumented immigrants - afraid to pick up free suplies, because of their legal status. alexis rosado helped spread the word - that help is available for everyone who needs it. there to help. tonight show host jimmy fallon is rallying support for flint during the city's water crisis. the comedian tweeted using the hashtag water for flint - announcing a 10-thousand dollars donation to water improvement efforts. fallon didn't stop there... he's calling for others to join him in donating. in his tweet... fallon asked "how about 10 friends match me." switching back to the winter weather, college students got out to enjoy the snow when classes were cancelled. nats of yelling you're watching the annual snowball fight between the corps of cadets and civilian students at virginia tech. you can see hundreds of people in blacksburg took this seriously. the handy cadets used recycling bins

today, and we'll see lots of sunshine and warmer temperatures. we'll warm up even more tomorrow with highs in the 50s. a cold front will move into the region on wednesday. this will bring some rain showers. it will linger near or just off the coast into thursday. meanwhile an area of low front. this will cause some more rain. however, some of the area may see this wrap up as snow late thursday as the low moves farther out to sea. the chance is low at this time, but this will have to be monitored over the next day or two. it does not look anything like last weeks system. next weekend looks great. fair skies and warmer

it's safe to say broncos fans experienced a thriller that will be rememeberd for quite some time. the a-f-c championship game between the denver broncos and the new england patriots came down to the final seconds. with just 17 seconds left to go - the patriots' rob gronkowski made a tremendous catch! but it just wasn't enough. the celebrations in denver are well underway. peyton manning is headed to his fourth super bowl 18-year career. the broncos organization have tied the steelers and the cowboys with eight super bowl bids - the most in nfl history. minutes after the broncos clinched the a-f-c title game, employees at this t- shirt shop got to work. the shop is printing up more than four thousand shirts to be distributed to stores around the area. the owners and life long broncos fans worked through the night to get the gear to fellow fans, first thing this morning. last night during the n-f-c championship against the arizona cardinals- one panthers fan's
