is on your screen. the event runs from 10 this morning through four this afternoon. new information to an explosion at the selden arcade that happened last april. officials with norfolk fire department say the explosion started outside of the building on the north east side near an electrical power supply feed in the duct department along wtih fire and police bomb technicians, an explosive detection canine and multiple others all helped in the investigation process. looking ahead, next week some chesapeake residents have a chance to learn more about potentially contaminated water in their neighborhood. the navy is hosting a meeting tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at butts road intermediate school. this comes after tests found high levels of dangerous chemicals in water near naval auxiliary landing field fentress. the navy then started providing its employees there with bottled water. we first reported this last week. some residents are upset they first possible contamination from the media and not

military. now to developing news about the water crisis in flint, michigan. governor rick snyder says officials found about two-hundred children with elevated lead levels in their blood. this happened after the state switched the area's water to save money. the mayor says residents should not have to pay for water they can not use. show guy with glasses the mayor also hired this guy. marc edwards is a professor at virginia tech whose testing helped expose the toxic water problem. the charge of overseeing all water testing being done. today a local group in portsmouth is holding a community meeting with former city manager john rowe. the topic of his rowe's presentation is "trust in local government - why it matters." the people for portsmouth say the timing of tonight's event couldn't be better. we've told you about how many people in portsmouth are upset with city leaders and their lack of transparency. tonight's event is scheduled to take place at seven at the scottish

tunnel to get between portsmouth and norfolk. new developments are scheduled in the public corruption case against norfolk city treasurer anthony burfoot. attorneys are meeting with a judge to discuss the progress of the case. burfoot pleaded not guilty to the corruption charges. federal prosecutors say he was part of a scheme to defraud the city. he's currently out on bond. his trial is expected to start in may. a vote is expected in the virginia capitol today - as a republican- controlled committee voted to endorse virginia supreme court picks by both democratic governor terry mcauliffe and gop lawmakers. the house courts of justice committee interviewed and approved justice jane marum roush and court of appeals judge rossie alston. republicans protested mcauliffe's appointment of roush in july, saying he did a poor job of consulting with gop leaders before making his pick. gop leaders have promised to replace roush with alston, who they say is better qualified. but republicans may not have enough votes in the senate to pull that move off. we continue following

duke university are at a standstill after a new member's alcohol-related hospitalization. student affairs released a statement saying sorority activity is suspended over concerns over the recruiting process. the student is expected to recover fully. a university website says most of duke's 18 sororities hold their formal recruitment process in january, when prospective members visit chapters and then receive bids to join. the website listed last sunday as "bid day." students on campus say the alcohol- related hospitalization isn't surprising. 6 sec no super (mos/student) "it is not a strange phenomenon. you have people being ems'd more and more every year." tv stations report an email signed by a school official says the new sorority member is in critical condition. job cuts are coming to locally based norfolk southern railroad. this is after the company delivered less freight and saw profits drop 29 percent in the fourth-quarter of last year.

plans to cut two thousand jobs. about 12-hundred people will loose thier job this year. norfolk southern also plans to reduce overtime costs and improve efficiency by upgrading its locomotive fleet. covering decision 20-16 this midday -- just days ahead of the iowa caucus - three new nbc news/wall street journal/marist polls show donald trump is pulling away from opponent ted cruz. on the democratic side - the race for president is a lot closer. first, the republicans. trump is pulling in 32 percent... compared to cruz with 25 percent. meanwhile hillary clinton is three points ahead of bernie sanders, 48- percent to 45-percent, among likely democratic voters. in new hampshire, where voters will go to the polls on february 9th, trump has a double digit lead (31%) over cruz (12%). on the other side, sanders has increased his lead among likely democratic voters... he's now ahead with 57 percent compared to clinton with 38 percent.

carolina, both trump and clinton hold commanding leads. clinton is besting her democratic competitor 64 percent to 27 percent. while trump is ahead of percent. new information this midday out of burns, three more protesters occupying a wildlife refugee are in police custody. the three turned themselves in wednesday night at a checkpoint outside the refuge. over two days, 11 members of the group that has occupied the malheur national wildlife refuge have been arrested. speaking on the telephone from inside the refuge on wednesday night, an occupier said that seven people remained on the refuge. around 200 south korean and u-s marines took part in annual winter military exercises today. the training started january 19th. it aims to improve the marines' abilities to survive in intense cold while in a combat situation. the winter exercises include downhill ski runs, tactical maneuvers using

a georgia high school is under fire for its raffle giveaway. the wrestling team's booster club at pickens school in jasper is raffling a glock 43, 9 millimeter pistol. the winner must be at least 21 years-old and pass a federal and state background check. despite complaints by some community members, the school district washed its hands of the issue saying....."the pickens county school district is not conducting this fundraiser, and the district has no supervisory role, control, or authority with regards to the booster club." a local gun shop donated the weapon which it says is valued at around $400. two children are dead after a house fire in eastern wisconsin. the fire started tuesday night just before 9 o'clock local time. authorities say the fire started after the parents left 4 children home alone to attend a church bible study. a 9 and 10-year-old were able to escape the flames but a

old were not. the 11-year-old died after she escaped the home, then returned to warn other family members. a neighbor described the situation. here's a look at brooke dooley. she is a senior at deep creek high school where she was cheerleader. she died along with her mother lori and her dad todd dooley. also killed was brooke's grandmother doris. according to facebook doris worked at temple baptist church here in chesapeake. her husband who died a couple years ago was pastor of the that church. this loss is just devastating for the community runs=:20 outuce=her

looking into the constitutionality of prayers at local council meetings. oral arguments were held before a three- judge panel on wednesday. it's in challenge of a county commissioner's meetings starting with prayer referring to christianity. the a-c-l-u sued the rowan county commission in 20-13. the supreme court recently upheld christian prayers at local town council meetings in new york, but the aclu says the latest case is different. north carolina u.s. senator richard burr had 5-point-3 million dollars starting the new year in his bid to represent capitol hill for another six years. the richard burr committee took in 818-thousand dollars to wrap up 2015. burr has three rivals in the march 15th republican primary. four democrats are also running for the same seat held by burr. the coast guard says the locally based cutter northland will sail home today. the portsmouth-based cutter has been on a two month patrol of the eastern pacific. it's mission

italian lawmakers began debating legalizing civil unions for gay couples today. thousands of supporters have rallied ahead of the debate. italy is the only country in western europe that doesn't recognize same-sex unions. critics are targeting a so-called stepchild clause in the civil union debate -- if passed, a gay or lesbian partner will be able to adopt the biological child of his or her partner. some conservatives argue this would encourage surrogacy -- which is illegal in italy.
