when they are out serving the community. specialists came in to fit k-9's for their new bullet proof vests today. it is all thanks to a donation from c-n-n anchor anderson cooper and the spike's k-9 fund. it hits home for the department, because they lost a k-9, krijger, earlier this month after a suspect shot him. he didn't have any protection. if you want to see more pictures of the k-9's in their vests, we have a slideshow up on wavy dot com. later today a norfolk assistant principal is expected in court for a bond hearing. police say 64-year-old gary jordan. who is the assistant principal at madison alternative center, made inappropriate comments to a child. this incident allegedly happened on january 14th, on bowden's ferry road - the same block where the school is located. jordan's hearing is expected to start at one this afternoon. police in portsmouth are looking for a suspect who robbed a cell phone store. officers say someone went into the metro p-c-s store on george washington highway with a weapon around seven last night.

tell us no one got hurt. we're working to find out if police have a description of the suspect and if that person took anything from the store. call the crime line if you have any information in this case. some much-needed help for hampton roads shipyards. senators mark warner and tim kaine announced the navy will expedite repairs on three ships. they hope it helps our area shipyards, which are struggling because of a lack work, and going through thousands of layoffs right now. we've been telling you about the layoffs for awhile now. we're still trying to figure out how this new announcement will impact newport news shipbuilding is in the process of laying off about 15-hundred people. another round is coming up in a few days. the president of newport news shipbuilding said back in december that 738 employees will be cut on february 3rd. that's in addition to 480 of people who lost their jobs back in september. under the navy's plan, repairs for the u-s-s tortuga, gettysburg, and winston churchill will be moved up by several months.

the governor of kentucky is making very strong accusations against planned parenthood. governor matt bevin says the organization is performing abortions in his state illegally. he says planned parenthood is not liceneced to carry out procedures in his state. planned parenthood and legislative supporters are responding, saying it is following the law. bevin followed up his

" planned parenthood recently opened up a center in louisville, but that facility's existense wasn't publicly known until thursday. the f-b-i releases video of the fatal traffic stop shooting of an armed occupier of a national wildlife refuge in oregon. the f-b-i unveiled the video at a news conference yesterday. the video was shot from a plane used by the f-b-i. the special agent in charge says lavoy finicum tried to go around a roadblock and ended up running into a snowbank. he says when finicum got out of the truck, he reached for his pocket. that's when agents shot him. the f-b-i says finicum had a loaded nine milimeter semi-automatic handgun in his pocket. the f-b-i then reminded everyone the occupation of the

over and four people are still there. police in columbia, south carolina are investigating the sudden death of a college student. someone found a 19-year-old student at the university of south carolina dead thursday afternoon. the coroner says the woman was in her dorm room when she died. police aren't saying how she died, but they say it is suspicious. an autopsy will be done sometime today. some people got a big surprise while eating dinner at cracker barrel. police officers chased a suspect through the restauraunt. this happened in albuquerque tuesday. police say officers were chasing anthony lujan when he busy road. lujan got out of his truck, and ran to the nearby cracker barrel. officers chased him inside. lujan tried to hide behind a display in the country store, as customers panicked and started running for the exit. police eventually arrested lujan. he was wanted for several violent crimes over the past month.

north carolina is getting some praise for stopping a bank robber. this happened at the p-n-c in zebulon, right outside of raleigh. police say a person wearing a mask came to the back door of the bank yesterday morning. you can see in the security video, the manager holds the door shut after he sees the suspect coming. police say the suspect used a handgun to hit the door to try to get it open. the suspect eventually ran off. that person is still on the loose. two people are somehow alive after the truck they were riding in flew off an overpass in san diego. the truck exploded when it hit the other freeway below. this happened thursday evening. the two people in the truck were somehow able to get out without any serious injuries. crews were able to put the fire out before it spread to the trees and plants along the freeway. some people on the coast in the northeast heard some loud noises after some fighter jets cause a series of sonic booms. people in new jersey

sharing photos of the chesapeake police badge shrouded in black. now we turn to the investigation into this shocking crime. let's take you through the time line of events. chesapeake police say this all started wednesday at around 3:30 in the afternoon. that's when officers went to check todd dooley's home on wildwood road. they found his son 22-year-old landon shot to death . then wednesday evening their investigation led them to this home on george washington highway. here officers began their standoff with the suspected gunman 26-year-old cameron dooley. after several hours of trying to negotiate with him, officers entered the home around 2:10 thursday morning and found cameron and his mother, father, sister, and grandmother dead. many of you reached out to the dooley family to offer your support and help. love ones started a go fund me account to help cover the cost of the funerals. so far they've raised more than seven- thousand dollars. if you'd like to help the family we've put a link

come kick the door down...but by the time i came back it was so much fire and so much smoke...i couldn't get in there. :58 the homeowner says the woman was living with her on a temporary basis for a few months. she said the victim does not have any family in the area. portsmouth mayor kenny wright was supposed to appear in court today, but his case got pushed back. the mayor faces a felony charge or allegedly trying to run from police earlier this month. the portsmouth sheriff says he tried to stop the mayor because he had an expired inspection sticker, but the mayor kept going. the former portsmouth city manager is possibly considering running for mayor wright's job. 10 on your side caught up with john rowe at a community meeting last night. he said he's not saying no to the possibility. he also said he needs to discuss it with his family before making any decisions. at a meeting last night hosted by the group "people for portsmouth" more than 500 people came out to hear rowe speak about

"if you were to take just a poll in here i think the sense was that there's not much trust, and if there's not much trust, then yes, local government has failed us." city council ousted rowe in april, ahead of his planned resignation. if he does decide to run, the filing deadline is june 14th. 15 schools in our area are one step closers to being fully accredited. the virginia department of education announced a list of elementary and middle schools that are on track to achieving full accreditation within three years. here's a list of a few of the schools the department says have made big internal changes. the board of education rated three schools in our area as "accreditation denied" they are a-w-e bassette elementary and hunter b andrews school in hampton, and churchland middle in portsmouth. these schools must submit its plans to raise student achievement to the state. you can see the full list

a man from california will spend the next 20 years in prison in south korea for stabbing a college student to death at a burger king in seoul 19 years ago. 36-year-old arthur patterson has a week to appeal the sentence. patterson originally recieved 18 months in prison for destroying evidence and having a dangerous weapon. he was let out in 19-99 and came back to the united states. officials sent him back to seoul in september. patterson's friend edward lee was originally sentenced to life in prison for the killing, but was later set free, because of the lack of evidence against him. isis is claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing that killed eight people in yemen yesterday. isis says one of it's militants attacked a checkpoint outside the palace in the main city of southern yemen. a security sources say soldiers and civilians died, and 17 others were hurt. they also say the

be targeting a local businessman going into the complex. the president of yemen was in the palace when the attacked happened, but he wasn't hurt. officials in malaysia are examining a metal object they think may be wreckage from malaysian airlines flight mh-370. this is the second time in a week debris from the doomed flight may have been found. someone spotted it floating in the waters off the malaysian coast wednesday. officials from malaysia's department of civil avaition are looking into whether this debris is from the plane. the plane disappeared with 239 people on board in march 20-14. at least three people are dead after the plane they were on crashed in australia victoria state police say a fisherman in the area saw the plane crash into the water. emergency workers found three bodies, but police say a fourth person might also be missing. investigatos are still trying to figure out what caused the crash. police in portugal took control of 182 tons of tobacco leaves.

for sale on the internet. the leaves are enough to produce 364 million cigarettes. officials recovered the illegal tobacco in an operation that involved 41 search warrants. authorities also found more than 600- thousand dollars in cash. countries in latin america are still on high alert as the zika virus continues to spread. argentina, chile, hondouras, and venezuela are all reporting cases of the virus. the virus can only be spread through mosquitos, and the worldwide spread of the virus is attributed to people who have travelled somewhere where the virus already is. scientists link the virus to birth defects and several countries are warning women to avoid getting pregnant. the world health organization says up to four-million people may get the zika virus within the next year. many parts of italy are in a drought. even though it's the middle of winter, people in several regions are rationing water. it has not rained very

the lack of rain has left the rivers and lakes looking like they do in the middle of summer. the lack of water pressure is also causing strets to start sinking. and it doesn't look like it is going to rain any time soon. forecasters aren't predicting any rain for another two weeks. the weathert is another kind of extreme in azerbaijan. take a look at this video of cars slipping and sliding on ice in the capital baku. the brakes on cars and buses were pretty much useless as drivers tried to get through an intersection that looked more like an ice rink. amazingly, no accidents were reported at the intersection. ice like this is very rare in azerbaijan, and the cars and roads there are not prepared to deal with it. and a severe storm hit sydney earlier today.

tower in the center of the city gets struck by lightning. the storm took down some trees and did some major damage to homes and buildings. australian media reported 16-thousand homes lost power. several train lines in the city had to be shut down because wiring had to be fixed. the storm also caused several delays at sydney's airport.
