news - three people shot in norfolk - police believe they're all connected. but the victims were all found in different places. police responded to widgeon road and partridge street in the norview section of the city where they found the first victim. a few blocks from there, on pugh street, police found a second victim in a car. they say a third person walked into sentara norfolk general hospital also with gunshot wounds. neighbors say they heard the sound of gunfire come from near a basketball court around 3:30 this afternoon. 10 on your side's liz palks is live with the latest details. deanna - police just cleared the scene a few minutes ago. but this intersection of widgeon and partridge was the center of their investigation. and the basketball court is right behind me. they had several evidence markers down by shell casings. residents telling me they heard somewhere around 8 to 10 shots. police tell us this shooting happened around

they're saying three people are shot. and at least one of the victims is a male...he is expected to be ok. neighbors tell me there was a pick up basketball game going on when the shooting happened. none of them witnessed the shooting - they only heard it - so we don't know if the game is related. but everyone i spoke to said there were young children playing on the court and in the field as well. alicia talbert - neighbor c23 5:34 - my first going to play basketball. so i looked outside and seen everybody running that way and running to their cars. c23 8:12 - i see little kids jumping the fence and that hurt me because i love kids. police haven't released any other details on the other two victims. people in the area seem to know who the victims are. but we have not been given any official information from police. i'm liz palka, 10 on your

if you have any information about what happened - be sure to call the crime line. we're following even more breaking news at this hour - this time from blacksburg - in the western part of the state. a second person has been arrested in the death of 13-year-old nicole lovell. this is a picture of the two people now in police custody. police charged 18-year-old david eisenhauer with abduction and murder. 19 year old natalie marie keepers faces lesser charges. both suspects are students at virginia tech. nicole lovell's body was found along the north carolina - virginia border saturday afternoon. news of her death spread just before candlelight vigils in blacksburg...devastat ing people in attendance. in our next half hour - we'll hear from the people at that vigil. we're learning new details tonight about the norfolk man accused of killing his mother. police say 22-year-old shawn hunter shot and killed sonya hunter yesterday morning. it happened outside their home on westcliff drive, off east little creek road. 10 on your side's joe fisher talked with family members and joins us now with details you'll see only

deanna -- there's anger and reget tonight among sonya hunter's family. anger -- that her son ended her life. regret -- because they say her son needed help for a mental illnes --- and he still needs help now. karen cuffee/victim's daughter-in-law ((c208 7:54)) "sonya was a woman who loved the lord and loved her children very much so." it's how 43-year-old sonya hunter lived her life. karen cuffee/victim's daughter-in-law ((c208 11:19)) "sonya was a bubbly person always cooking and cleaning." that makes her death so difficult for family and friends to comprehend. todd parker/friend ((c204 4:36)) "she was loved by everybody. i can tell you that right now. nobody disliked her at all, nobody, nobody." yet saturday morning -- her life allegedly taken at the hands of her own outside her home on westcliff road --- shot multiple times. family members say the two had a close relationship -- but shawn has suffered from mental health issues for nine years. karen cuffee/victim's daughter-in-law ((c208 8:25)) "he had things reach a tragic end." karen cuffee is the shawn's grandmother --- now filled with regret after an encounter with him just last week. karen cuffee/victim's

at the time of the shooting are relatives -- and are back with their parents. so far -- investigators don't know what led to the shots being fired. hunter faces second-degree murder and weapons charges. i'm joe fisher, 10 on your side. another person is dead after an early morning shooting in virginia beach. around 1 this morning - medics found a man shot in the chest. it happened along newtown arch. the man went to the hospital where he later died. police continue to investigate the shooting. we have a 10 time saver traffic alert to tell you about this evening. virginia beach boulevard between witchduck and aragona boulevard is closed. that's because of a water main break that happened earlier today. officials expect that area to be closed for several hours - and tell drivers to pick an alternate route.

turn their lives around. officials say no one was injured when a ferry ran aground on its way from ocracoke to hatteras. the coast guard says the ferry was trying to maneuvering around a dredge pipe late saturday morning in hatteras inlet when it got stuck. crews tried to free the ferry several times but when that didn't work - the coast guard shuttled the five passengers to hatteras. crews finally freed the ferry saturday night. a tractor trailer accident shut down interstate 64 earlier today. this is video from the vdot cams earlier today. traffic was backed up for more than 1 and a half miles to interstate 464. still ahead - arrested - a man is in jail after being accused of shooting

developing news from richmond. an officer is recovering after being shot early this morning. we know the accused shooter - 23-year-old keith smith, junior - is now in jail. the officer is a 5-year-veteran of the force. "after a brief conversation that person started to run there was a brief pursuit that person then fired multiple shots at the officers one of the officers were shot in the leg." police found the gun used to shoot the officer. the injured cop was taken to vcu medical center with non-life threatening injuries. a jail west of richmond is no longer on lockdown after law enforcement foiled an attempt to smuggle in contraband - including weapons and ammunition hidden inside a basketball. the lockdown lasted until january 29th at the powhatan reception and classification center is

more than 1 million low-income people in 21 states could soon lose their government food stamps if they fail to meet work requirements that kick in this month. the rule change in the federal supplemental nutrition assistance program was triggered by the improving economy -- specifically, falling unemployment. but it is raising concerns

after eight days on the run, three dangerous fugitives are back in custody in california. one turned himself in friday. the remaining two were caught a day later -- 400 miles from where they broke out of jail -- in santa ana. dan simon reports on how the remaining two were finally caught. (larry gray/ witness) "i heard the police tell him to get on the ground." larry gray originally thought the man police were arresting was a homeless person, until he heard the tone of the officer's commands. (larry gray/ witness) "'get on the ground! get on the ground!' i knew right then that that was more than a homeless person. and then i saw, kind of saw the complexion of the guy that was in, on the internet and the newspapers." that guy was 37-year-old hossein nayeri -- the one suspected of being the ringleader behind the escape. police say an unidentified tipster recognized him and the white van, linked to the prisoners. (grace scott gatpandan/ san francisco police dept.) "a citizen saw someone. saw something suspicious, notified an officer. and that notification ultimately led to the

armed and dangerous suspects." the second man was 20-year-old jonathan tieu, who officers found hiding induced the van parked in front of a whole foods grocery store. police say they also found ammunition inside the vehicle. (sheriff sandra hutchens/ orange co., ca) "i can say this morning that the entire state can breathe a sigh of relief because we have the other two dangerous individuals turned himself in on friday at an auto parts store in orange county. the daring and elaborate escapee took place on january 22nd. the men cut through a wall, and crawled through plumbing tunnels, making their way onto the roof of the jail. using bed sheets, they rappelled to the ground. with the men back in custody, the focus now is how they did it. late last week authorities arrested this woman, nooshfarin ravahgi, who taught english inside the jail. the orange county sheriff's department says she admitted giving materials to nayeri, including maps and overhead photos of the

a large oak tree limb fell on an 18-wheeler during a mardi gras parade in new orleans this weekend. police say six people including a child and pizza delivery man are hurt because of the tree. although no one was seriously hurt. the limb fell on the opposite side of the street from where parade floats were rolling. city employees managed to clear the wrecked truck and tree allowing the party to go on. straight ahead - spectacular view - a man uses his professional abilities to dance with the
