10 on your side's brandi cummings is live in williamsburg with details. the alert was sent out on saturday, saying a student contracted the zika virus over the winter break while traveling in central america. the college will not release any information about the student - like the person's gender, or why he or she was in central america or even who he or she was with. officials will only say the student is still enrolled. officials have said the student is expected to recover and is not having any symptoms of the zika virus. zika is primarily spread to people through a college spokesperson told me the student alerted college officials on friday that he or se contracted the virus and the advisory was sent out on saturday. during an interview this afternoon a spokesperson stressed that they believe there is no risk to anyone else on

no risk to anyone else on campus. our message to the campus community and the greater williamsburg community is that we are aware of this that we are monitoring it that our conversations with our own health and wellness team as well as the cdc show that there is no health risk here on campus or in the community. we spoke to several students today about the zika virus alert. you'll hear from them today on wavy news at 5. live in williamsburg brandi cummings 10 on your side. the world health organization predicts up to four million people could be infected with the zika virus over the next decade. most people get very mild symptoms with zika. the c-d-c says the most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis or (pink eye). other common symptoms

headache. evidence is growing that the virus could be causing devastating birth defects in babies born to mothers who became infected while pregnant. there's also evidence zika could be causing guillan barre (gee-on bah-ray) syndrome that temporarily paralyzes some people. coming up in our next half hour: i'll talk to a state health department virus. a williamsburg woman could spend decades in prison for stealing from an 82- year-old man. he hired her to help out around the house. but while she was doing that -- federal investigators say she stole more than 558- thousand dollars. 10 on your side's lex gray spoke with the victim today. anita, pete mcdonald tells me the woman now accused of stealing so much from him was more like a friend than an employee. he hired dana morris back in november 20- 11. they would watch morning t-v and go out to lunch. but morris also did his laundry and handled his mail and bills. and that's where he eventually found a problem. mcdonald says in december of 2014 -- a check

had allegedly been doing. when he would write her 400-dollar checks every month -- she was apparently adding a one, then a 3, then a 4. eventually, mcdonald says she was paying herself as much at 44-hundred dollars a month. according to federal court documents, morris committed wire fraud when she sent the money to a bank in texas. she was arrested january 13. pete mcdonald/alleged victim 12:20 i'd say i was more disillusioned and hurt and angry, my god, you're supposed to know people. completely misjudged her, which is the same reaction from people around here who ate with us and knew her and they can't believe it. she's a nice person. :41 morris already posted bond, and pleaded not guilty. i reached out to both her and her attorney today, but didn't hear back. her trial in federal court is scheduled for march 31st. i'm lex gray, 10 on your

several people at a hotel on york street. holloway is in jail without bond. the york-poqouson sheriffs office is looking for a gas station robber. these are surveillance photos from the tabb exxon on big bethel road. investigators say a man with a gun walked in around 6-45 saturday morning and demanded money from the register. he ordered the clerk to the floor and ran. chesapeake police are working to identify the two women in this surveillance photo. detectives say they used a stolen credit. the victim says she lost her wallet on january 4th in the centerville turnpike area. a short time later --- someone used the victim's credit cards at several stores in the greenbrier area. norfolk police are still working to make an arrest in a weekend drive-by shooting. bullets hit three people --- including two teenagers. it happened around 3:30 yesterday afternoon on a basketball court near widgeon road and partridge street. that's just a few blocks behind norview high school. detectives say someone fired shots from a blue s-u-v. a 13-year-old, a

year-old were shot. police say all three victims should recover. norfolk police are investigating another shooting on east olney road. that's near downtown. it happened around 7-45 last night. police say the victim should recover. if you have information about any of these crimes --- call the crime line. a man is behind bars charged in the murder of his mother in norfolk. police say 22-year-old shawn hunter shot and killed sonya hunter saturday morning. it happened outside their home on westcliff drive, off east little creek road. detectives haven't told us about a motive. family members did tell 10 on your side hunter needs help for a mental illness. there is a memorial service tonight for a family of six killed in a murder-suicide. police found the bodies of todd, lori, landon, brooke, doris, and cameron dooley inside two different homes on north george washington highway and wildwood road last week. investigators say 26-year-old cameron dooley shot and killed his relatives before

a thunderstorm after 10 to 20, with gusts as high as 30. 10 on your side is looking into a weekend shooting that left a man dead in virginia beach. it happened early sunday morning on newton arch. 10 on your side's jason marks spent the day at the apartment complex and out? anita the shooting happened just before 1 am-- when crews got on the scene they found a man lying on a sidewalk. let's show you the area where this shooting took place. neighbors say it here in the back parking lot behind the mayfair apartments-- that's just off of newtown road. i talked with several people in the neighborhood who say they heard several gun shots and followed by a woman screaming. just of sirens rang though the

man was shot in the chest and died at the hospital. we saw several bullet holes in the wall at the complex. 10 on your side has learned the name of the victim but since his name hasn't been relased by police we aren't going to release it either. i spoke with the mother of his children today and she did not want to go on camera but she says he is a father of 8. police also have not said if they have any suspect information. we will keep working to find out anything new on virginia beach's most recent murder investigation. jason marks 10 on your side. chesapeake detectives are working to make an arrest in a double shooting. officers found a man and woman shot around 8 last night on booker street. paramedics took both victims to the hospital. we're working to find out more about their condition. norfolk wants to recognize crime fighters. every year the crime prevention awards committee recognizes people or groups who make a difference in the ongoing fight. it could be a teen steering his or her friends away from crime, a business working to eliminate opportunities for crime, or a police officer or city

job to prevent crime. nominations are accepted until february 26th. we posted a link to the more about a proposal for a new fieldhouse in chesapeake. one council member hopes it will revitalize the chesapeake square retail area. 10 on your side's erin kelly spent the day learning more about the idea. councilman roland davis says the fieldhouse could attract people from across the region and increase real estate and sales tax revenues. his overview included these photos of the virginia beach fieldhouse - just for illustration purposes. he's picturing an indoor facility with turf fields, volleyball and basketball courts. it's not clear exactly where it would go. under the proposal - the city would use existing funds - and spend about 7 million to build it. then they would look for someone to lease, manage, and operate the facility -- 2012 i think the chesapeake square mall area just basically needs that area,

two virginia tech students accused in the death of a 13-year-old girl will return to court in march. the suspects in the death of 13-year-old nicole madison lovell made their first courtroom appearances today. 18-year-old david eisenhauer is charged with first-degree murder and abduction. 19-year-old natalie keepers is charged with improper disposal of a body and accessory after the fact. the students did not enter a plea today. lovell's body was found saturday near the virginia-north carolina border. police have not said how she was killed or release a motive for her murder. investigators are working to figure out what sparked the fire that engulfed an industrial building in los angeles. propane cylinders and combustible storage items fueled the flames of this morning's fire. it sent thick black smoke over a business area. more than 140 firefighters battled the fire. there are no

the son of a virginia man says it's miraculous his father is safe after a house fire. that's because the fire victim is blind. he escaped this burning home in amelia. rodger delpblind man's son "he felt an intense amount of heat on his face once he opened the front door. he treated back into the house grabbed his phone and attempted to call 911." "when that failed, he realized he needed to get out of the house immediately." "he continues to the back and gets down the stairs and in the backyard."
